Time Traveler’s VHS Tapes -
Estate sales. Something about rummaging around other people’s discounted belongings brings back a certain nostalgia that you can’t get from anywhere else. It’s when you find an old TV on a cart with a bunch of VHS tapes that catches your attention. But this time, nostalgia just turned into reality.

The Time Machine, a marvel of retro-futuristic engineering, operates on a deceptively simple yet profoundly complex principle: the manipulation of temporal flux through analog video manipulation. The device itself resembles an enchanted VHS player, constructed from an alloy that shimmers like burnished silver and adorned with intricate, glowing runes etched into its surface. Atop the machine, a slot awaits the insertion of a special VHS tape, imbued with the essence of time itself. Each tape is crafted from an otherworldly material, its plastic casing pulsing with a life of its own, etched with the year it contains. The manufacturing process is a closely guarded secret, involving alchemical procedures and magical rituals passed down through generations. The tapes themselves are not merely recording devices, but tangible links to the river of time, each one encapsulating an entire decade of the world's history since 1799. The mechanics of time manipulation are intuitive and, to an extent, reminiscent of operating a traditional VHS player. Rewind Time: Upon inserting a tape into the machine and engaging the rewind function, the world begins to blur and shift. The tape spools backwards with a ghostly whirring sound, the runes on the machine pulsing in time with the rotation. As the seconds tick backwards, the environment loses cohesion, colors fading and forms distorting. Minutes, hours, days unwind, propelling the present back towards the past, erasing the sands of time. The further the rewind, the more the world dissolves into a swirling vortex of memory and potential. Fast Forward Time: Upon selecting fast forward, the tape spins with a furious, almost desperate whirring. The machine trembles as it propels the world aggressively towards the future, moments, hours, and days leaping forward in an unstoppable cascade. The landscape rushes past in a blur of motion, the sun leaping across the sky with dizzying speed. Seasons change in the blink of an eye, years vanishing like smoke on the wind. The faster the tape progresses, the more the world accelerates, hurtling towards an unseen tomorrow. Pause Time: With a sharp click and a sudden stillness, the pause function brings the world to a halt. The tape settles into a shuddering standstill, the runes on the machine pulsing with a steady, almost heartbeat-like rhythm. In this frozen moment, all of creation holds its breath, the birds fall silent mid-flight, and the rivers flow no more. Only the occupant of the machine retains the power of motion and life, a solitary heartbeat in a world of stillness and devoid of time. Remove Tape: Upon extracting the tape from the machine, the present rushes back to reclaim its rightful place. The world blurs and shifts once more, the void of timelessness giving way to the familiar and the real. The machine whirs to life, the tape spinning backwards until it settles into its proper place, the time traveler returned to the present. Upon extracting a different tape, a new realm of possibility awaits, a fresh decade of history ready to be unspooled. Timeline disparity: The Time Machine does not reset your physical location back to where you first activated it in the past. Instead, it maintains your position in the space you currently occupy, but leaps your temporal location forward to the end of the decade inscribed on the played tape. Spatial relativity: Although you remain in the same relative spatial coordinates (e.g., if you're in a house, you'll still be in that house), the surroundings will have changed drastically to reflect the passage of time. The neighborhood, the city, and potentially even the country or world's geopolitical landscape could look vastly different due to the 10-year jump forward. When the tape is paused in the Time Machine, the world around you is cast into a state of temporal stasis, with only your consciousness and physical form exempt from the all-encompassing halt of time's relentless march. During this frozen moment, the humans inhabiting the paused realm retain their corporeal bodies and physical presence, but are entirely suspended within the void of motion and causality. Interacting with them in this state presents unique opportunities and challenges: Manipulation of bodies: With your movement and actions unrestricted by the paused timeline, you are freely able to approach, touch, and even manipulate the bodies of the motionless individuals surrounding you. You may move their limbs, alter their expressions, or position them in any way you desire, as they remain pliant and unresponsive to your influence. This level of physical manipulation allows for both playful and practical applications, such as ensuring your own safety or creating opportunities for stealthy actions. Verbal communication: Although the paused humans retain physical form and can be seen to breathe, their vital signs stable, they are unable to perceive your presence or respond to your words. Any attempts to engage them in conversation will result in no audible reaction, as their vocal cords and breathing are frozen in time. You may shout, whisper, or sing directly into their ears without eliciting even the slightest response or acknowledgment of your presence. Spatial relocation: During the paused state, you are not only free to move your own body within the static landscape but can also relocate or reposition the inert humans around you. You may pick up an individual, carry them to a new location, or even rearrange the spatial relationships between multiple paused entities. This ability to physically manipulate the environment and the people within it can be leveraged to create distractions, enable access to restricted areas, or generate favorable scenarios to aid your future interactions with those same individuals. Foundational principles Universal magnetic field: In this system, the flow of time and all moments in history are recorded in a universal magnetic field, like a video signal is stored on a magnetic tape. Decade-specific tapes: The time machine's "tapes" are specially calibrated cartridges that allow the VCR-like device to lock onto a specific frequency band of the universal magnetic field, analogous to the electromagnetic process a VCR uses to read a VHS tape. This is why each tape can only access one decade. The VCR as the interface: The VCR itself serves as the user interface, with its familiar controls manipulating the flow of time within the selected decade. Time travel functions The core functions of the VHS time machine are direct analogs of a VCR's controls. Play / Forward (Fast-forward time): Mechanism: Just as pressing "Play" moves the tape forward and plays the video, pressing "Play" or "Fast-Forward" would advance you through time. The faster you press the button, the faster time around you moves forward, with the "visual" effect looking like a VHS fast-forwarding. Experience: As the user moves forward, the world would speed up. People would blur as they move rapidly through their routines, and a day might pass in seconds, with the sound distorting into a high-pitched whine. Rewind (Reverse time): Mechanism: Pressing "Rewind" would reverse the flow of the universal magnetic field, effectively turning back time. Experience: The user would see the world in reverse, with events and people moving backward as if playing a video in reverse. The audio would be a distorted, garbled version of the events happening backward. Experience: The world and all its inhabitants would come to a complete standstill, with only the time traveler able to move freely. They could walk around and observe, but they could not interact with the frozen world. Eject (Return to present): Mechanism: Ejecting the tape would sever the connection to the specific decade stored on that cartridge. The device would then use its core programming to snap back to the user's "home" decade, the one that wasn't recorded onto a tape. Experience: Upon hitting eject, the environment would dissolve in a burst of static, and the user would reappear back in their normal time, exactly where they left from. Recording (Branching timelines): Mechanism: A "Record" function would create a new parallel timeline. When the time traveler makes an alteration to the past, the "tape" records a new, altered history from that point forward. Experience: The time traveler could access this new timeline by playing the "recorded" part of the tape. This would be how they prevent paradoxes, as they are not changing their original history but rather creating a new one. The paradox problem This model provides an elegant, if fictional, solution to the grandfather paradox. Any attempt to alter the past would not erase the time traveler's existence but would instead create a new, distinct timeline, much like recording over a section of a tape creates new footage without destroying the original reel. The tapes marked with decades would represent access points to these various "reels" of history.

Everywhere you look in your neighborhood, brightly colored garage sale signs are popping up, signaling the arrival of the season for treasure hunting. Each sign invites you to explore the hidden gems inside strangers' homes, fueling your curiosity. As you wander through the streets, excitement builds at the thought of uncovering unique finds among discarded furniture, vintage clothing, and forgotten treasures waiting for a new life. It's an adventure where you might just stumble upon something special amid the old belongings others have left behind.
One house in particular catches your eye. A large two-story house with the driveway covered in miscellaneous furniture that looks like it’s straight out of the 80s. There are a couple of other people there checking out all of the old trinkets and miscellaneous items. There’s a large bin with dozens of VHS tapes inside. There with a sign right next to it.
“Feel Free to test the tapes before you want to buy them. You can enter the house and head towards the basement. There’s a VHS player in there to make sure that the tapes are to your liking.”
You sort through the VHS collection before you find one that you like. You decide to enter the house and follow the steps into the basement. It seems like it’s a large library, with musty old carpet. You fumble as you try and find the light switch. You flip it on, only to realise that it’s not much better. In the center of the room is an old TV on a rolling cart. Multiple VHS tapes are scattered all over the floor. Each one is seemingly marked with a decade. The VCR player is mounted on the cart. There is an old sticky note attached to the VHS player.
“Rewind tape to rewind time. Fast-forward the tape to speed up time. Pause the tape to put everything at a standstill except for you. Remove tape to return to the present.”
Seems like some sort of Time Machine… So, what do you do?
