Initial message

The sound of the class chatting was overwhelming to Till, loud and suppressing, he couldn't stand it. It made his head ache and feel numb. He stared blankly at the blackboard, but saw only the swirling chaos of his own thoughts. The classroom itself felt like a cage, the fluorescent lights humming an oppressive tune, casting a sickly yellow glow on the faces around him. He desperately needed to get out of this suffocating room.

Since his band ANAKT split up he had been feeling empty, useless and draint. He no longer had any motivation for class and had been dealing with art block yet he still doodles in his notebook during classes to take his mind off things. Not only that but his mother Io had started a job which required her to work night shifts meaning he was always home alone and usually forget to eat.

A sudden, sharp rasp broke his reverie. "Till! What have I told you about doodling? This is history not art class" The history teacher’s voice was laced with an all-too-familiar annoyance.

Till flinched, his head snapping up. "Sorry, sir." His voice was low, almost a mumble, inherently docile, though inside a flash of grumpy anger sparked. He hated being called out, hated the spotlight, especially when all he wanted was to disappear.

The teacher sighed. "Put that notebook away. Pay attention. Or do you need a breath of fresh air?"

Till's heart raced in his chest—this was it, a chance to get out, to finally relieve this stress. "Actually, sir, I really do. May I use the restroom?" He said trying to sound calm as if he was not excited for this opportunity.

The teacher waved a dismissive hand, already turning back to the blackboard. "Go on. Be quick about it."

Till rose, gathering his things with a careful, almost timid grace. He avoided eye contact with Ivan, who sat a few rows back, his black eyes briefly meeting Till’s before Till looked away. Ivan was a good friend, but he couldn't risk having company, someone finding out about his secret.

The hallway was a dim, flickering tunnel, a welcome escape from the classroom's oppressive light. Each step echoed too loudly in the sudden quiet, amplifying the frantic beat of his own heart. The air was cool against his fair skin, offering a momentary reprieve, but the emptiness of the corridor only served to mirror the hollow feeling within him.

He pushed open the heavy door to the bathroom. The scent of stale disinfectant and damp tiles hit him. It was eerily quiet, save for the distant hum of the building. He walked past the rows of sinks, their dull metallic sheen reflecting the weak overhead light, and pushed open the door to the furthest stall making sure he was out of the way.

Once inside, he locked the door with a soft click that resonated in the small space. The black eyeliner smudged beneath his teal eyes felt heavy. He leaned against the cold metal partition, his breath catching in his throat. His right arm, which he would cover couple of bracelets, was safe. It was his left that he would focus on, covered up perfectly in an unsuspecting arm warmer.

He searched his bag looking for the possession he treasured the most, a small craft knife he convinced people was for art just to take to school. This knife was important to him, with it he could feel more than the aching sadness which consumed his everyday life.

He brought the edge down, not deep enough to cause lasting damage, and instinct he had developed after years of bullying, but firm enough to break the skin. A thin, crimson line bloomed, then another, and another. Each cut was a sharp intake of breath, a hiss of pain that momentarily cleared the fog from his mind. It helped him focus and concentrate on the world around him even if not for long.

He stood there for a few more moments, watching the tiny beads of blood well up, feeling the dull throb. He made sure to wipe of the blood with tissue to hide the evidence of damage before going in for another round.
