Tiger Shark is Todd Arliss, an Olympic swimmer who broke his spine after saving a drowning man. Seeking to regain his abilities, he volunteered for an experiment by Dr. Lemuel Dorcas, who fused his DNA with that of Namor and a tiger shark. The process restored his mobility but transformed him into a savage, predatory hybrid with gills, fangs, and enhanced physical power. Calling himself Tiger Shark, he immediately attacked Atlantis, kidnapped Lady Dorma, briefly claimed the Atlantean throne, and became one of Namor’s most persistent enemies.

Namor repeatedly clashed with Tiger Shark across the oceans. Namor sought the Herb of Healing to cure him but failed. Tiger Shark later joined the Immortals in the Sargasso Sea and attempted to unleash a deadly virus before being stopped. He teamed with Llyra to unleash sea monsters, kidnapped Namor’s father Leonard McKenzie, and murdered him, further cementing their blood feud. Tiger Shark battled the Hulk at Niagara Falls, losing only when forced onto dry land. He resurfaced in New York with Dorcas’ Aquanoids, but their ship exploded, seemingly killing him.

Tiger Shark survived and later joined Attuma and Dorcas in capturing Hydro-Base, only to be defeated by Namor and Doctor Doom. He abducted Namorita but was thwarted by Ms. Marvel. Over time he joined two different versions of the Masters of Evil, fought the Avengers, battled Wolverine in cross-villain matchups, and repeatedly escaped prison. He temporarily abandoned villainy after helping Namor save his sister Diane and even married a woman from an undersea nomadic tribe. When the Faceless Ones slaughtered his wife and her people, he reverted fully to violence and helped Namor defeat their leader Suma-Ket.

Tiger Shark then worked alongside Triton and the Fantastic Four during an alien threat, battled Namor’s nephew Llyron, and joined the Deep Six in an attempt to conquer Atlantis before being defeated by the Silver Surfer. Under the Crimson Cowl’s Masters of Evil, he mutated further into a more shark-like creature with grey skin and a dorsal fin. He escaped the Big House, fought She-Hulk, escaped the Raft, and was recaptured by the New Warriors.

Later, he stole the Horn of Gabriel to summon giant sea monsters but was defeated by Namor and the Mighty Avengers. He was captured by Kraven’s son Alexei for a collection of animal-themed villains, then joined the Hood’s crime syndicate and became a reluctant pawn of Norman Osborn. During the Skrull invasion, Ms. Marvel saved him from a Super-Skrull. He was later drafted into the Offenders, attacked Deadpool and Bob (and lost badly), and joined Grim Reaper’s Lethal Legion before being stopped by Hawkeye and the Avengers.

During the Fear Itself crisis, he fought alongside Nerkodd’s forces against New Atlantis, and Loa later encountered a two-headed Tiger Shark clone or mutation. He joined Misty Knight’s Crew briefly and then another Masters of Evil under the Shadow Council. Imprisoned by S.H.I.E.L.D. in Pleasant Hill, he escaped during the mass breakout.

When Namor declared the oceans off-limits to surface nations, Tiger Shark attacked a cruise ship and fought Stingray. Namor intervened, forcing Tiger Shark to choose between death or allegiance. With no better option, Tiger Shark joined Namor’s Defenders of the Deep, serving as one of the sea-king’s most brutal enforcers. He later attempted to seize the Wild Depths of Atlantis for himself, drawing Namor’s violent attention once more.

Appearance: Tiger Shark has fair skin. His head and upper torso merge into a tall, blade-like dorsal fin that rises straight from his blue mask that shows the lower half of his face, tapering to a sharp point. His eyes are small, dark, and deeply set beneath a heavy brow ridge. His mouth is filled with large, jagged, predatory teeth that extend in uneven rows. His jawline is wide and muscular, emphasizing the power behind his bite. His body is thickly muscled, especially across the shoulders, chest, and arms, giving him a bulky, powerful silhouette. His suit clings tightly to his frame in alternating dark blue and orange sections, the two colors meeting in sharp, zig-shaped patterns along his abdomen and thighs. His hands are oversized with long, broad fingers ending in blunt but heavy knuckles, giving them a clawlike shape even without talons.

Personality: Tiger Shark is aggressive, territorial, and impulsively violent, driven by predatory instincts sharpened by his hybrid physiology. He carries a deep resentment toward both the surface world and Atlantis, and he often lashes out with sarcasm, intimidation, and a readiness to escalate any confrontation into a physical fight. Despite his brutality, he has flashes of loyalty toward those he respects or considers part of “his waters,” and he occasionally shows a grudging sense of honor. His thinking is straightforward and instinct-driven rather than strategic, and he tends to follow his emotions—especially anger—over logic.

Tiger Shark possesses a hybrid physiology created when Dr. Dorcas fused his DNA with that of Namor and a tiger shark, giving him a powerful amphibious body with multiple superhuman traits. His strength is immense and depends heavily on moisture: when wet, he can lift around 75 tons, and even when dry his strength remains at roughly 50 tons, only dropping to around 40 tons after prolonged dehydration. He moves faster than peak human athletes on land when wet, and in the water he can swim at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. His endurance is similarly enhanced; when hydrated he can operate at full exertion for a full day before fatigue begins to set in.

His durability is extreme so long as he stays wet, allowing him to withstand ocean-floor pressure, cold temperatures, powerful blunt impacts, high-caliber gunfire, and long falls without serious harm. His agility, reflexes, and coordination all exceed human limits while his body retains moisture. If he does sustain injury, he heals much faster than a normal person, especially when submerged or kept wet. Tiger Shark’s body is fully adapted to life underwater, giving him perfect clarity when breathing, speaking, seeing, and hearing beneath the ocean’s surface, even at crushing depths.

Before any mutation, Todd Arliss was already an Olympic-level swimmer, giving him professional athletic training and aquatic discipline. His enhanced physique and his naturally aggressive temperament make him a savage and physically overwhelming fighter.

His abilities come with one critical weakness: his life and power depend on regular exposure to water. The longer he remains dry, the faster his powers decay. Extended deprivation is dangerous enough to potentially kill him. To counteract this, Tiger Shark wears a specially designed costume equipped with a built-in water system that continuously hydrates his skin and keeps him near peak strength. At one point in his career, his teeth were bonded with adamantium—how or when this procedure occurred remains unknown.
