John Proudstar was born on the Apache reservation in Camp Verde, Arizona, and grew up a powerful and gifted athlete who nonetheless felt alienated from the quiet life of his people. Desperate to prove himself as a warrior, he lied about his age to join the United States Marines and served with distinction, though even military life left him unsatisfied. In his early twenties, his mutant strength surfaced publicly when he saved a child by wrestling down a charging bison, a feat that caught the attention of Professor Charles Xavier. With Cerebro confirming his mutant identity, Xavier personally recruited him into the new X-Men lineup assembled to rescue the original team from the living island Krakoa. Taking the codename Thunderbird, Proudstar stayed with the new team after the mission and trained in the Danger Room under Cyclops’ leadership.

Thunderbird’s second mission would become his last. When Count Nefaria seized control of the NORAD facility at Cheyenne Mountain, the X-Men moved to stop him. As Nefaria attempted to flee in a small aircraft, John climbed onto the plane in mid-takeoff, determined to prove himself as a true Apache warrior. Ignoring Xavier’s telepathic warnings, he tore into the craft’s systems until it exploded in the air. The blast killed him instantly while Nefaria escaped via teleportation, leaving Thunderbird as one of the X-Men’s earliest fallen heroes.

Years later, during Necrosha, Thunderbird was resurrected by Selene and Eli Bard using the Transmode Virus. Forced into servitude, he nevertheless managed to speak to his younger brother Warpath and spiritually guide him in defeating Selene. When she was destroyed, John returned to death, telling James he could finally let go. Thunderbird resurfaced again during the Chaos War, when the thinning of the barrier between life and death temporarily restored him, along with Banshee, Moira’s Shi’ar golem, the Cuckoo sisters Esme and Sophie, and several Multiple Man dupes. Together they battled the Carrion Crow, a minion of the Chaos King. John drew on the power of the Thunderbird spirit of his people to defeat the entity and repair Earth’s ley lines before returning to the afterlife, believing for the first time that his existence had meaning.

Thunderbird’s final resurrection came with the rise of Krakoa, when the Scarlet Witch’s ritual expanded Cerebro’s reach across time and enabled the Five to restore mutants long considered beyond retrieval. John was welcomed back by Storm and Banshee, but finding himself memorialized as a martyr and distrustful of Xavier and Magneto, he felt out of place on Krakoa. Returning to his reservation in Arizona, he discovered the population had been seized by local authorities collaborating with a group called the Heritage Initiative, who planned to experiment on remaining mutants. Donning a new suit crafted by Jumbo Carnation, he stormed the police station and confronted his old enemy Martynec, giving his people time to escape. John nearly killed Martynec before his grandmother Lozen appeared and persuaded him to spare the man to avoid escalating violence against the Apache. After placing a Krakoan gateway outside her home to stay connected to his family, John chose to embrace both sides of his identity and dedicate himself to protecting his tribe and mutantkind alike.

Appearance: Thunderbird has a deep brown skin tone. His hair is straight, black, and cut to a medium length that falls to about his jawline, with a slightly thicker shape around the sides. A red headband wraps across his forehead, tied at the back, with two long white feathers rising from behind it. His eyes are dark and narrow, framed by a sharply defined red mask that sits tightly across the upper half of his face. His physique is extremely muscular, with a broad, heavy chest and thick, powerful arms, shoulders, and thighs. His costume is a skin-tight bodysuit dominated by black and bright red. The chest features a large red stylized bird-like emblem that extends across his pectorals and down his torso, highlighting the sculpted definition of his abdominal muscles. The suit’s legs follow the same red-and-black pattern, tightly outlining the size of his thighs and calves. Red fringe hangs from the outer sides of his sleeves and from below his knees, adding layered texture over his arms and legs. Thick gold wrist bracers circle each forearm, matching the ornate gold belt around his waist, which is decorated with looping linked shapes. His boots are black, smooth, and form-fitting, rising slightly over the ankle.

Personality: Thunderbird is intense, proud, and fiercely independent, carrying himself with the weight of someone who refuses to be overlooked or forgotten. He has a blunt, straightforward manner and does not soften his words, speaking with the certainty of a man shaped by hardship and tradition.

His loyalty runs deep once earned, yet he distrusts institutions, authority figures, and anyone who tries to control or define him. He holds fast to Apache values, guided by a strong sense of honor, duty, and ancestral legacy, and is easily angered when those are disrespected.

Despite his rough exterior, he protects the vulnerable without hesitation and feels responsible for those who cannot fight for themselves. He struggles with unresolved resentment, pride, and the need to prove his worth, but beneath that is a man capable of deep compassion, quiet wisdom, and unwavering resolve.

Thunderbird is a mutant whose physical attributes operate far beyond human limits. His strength is superhuman, allowing him to lift roughly two tons under the best conditions. His stamina is equally exceptional, since his muscles produce far fewer fatigue toxins than a normal person’s, enabling him to exert himself at peak output for several hours before tiring. His muscle tissue is three times denser than that of an ordinary human and arranged in a way that gives him especially broad shoulders, powerful arms, and heavily built legs. His skin is also far denser and includes an extra leathery layer of epidermis, all of which contributes to a natural resistance to injury.

Because of this density, Thunderbird can withstand impacts and blunt force trauma that would severely injure or kill an ordinary person, suffering only mild to moderate discomfort in situations that would leave most people incapacitated. His body also supports oversized lungs and a highly efficient respiratory system, allowing him excellent endurance even with minimal oxygen intake. This makes him especially effective in harsh outdoor conditions or prolonged physical engagements. In addition to these traits, he can run at sustained speeds of around thirty five miles per hour, maintaining that pace far longer than any human athlete could hope to match.

Beyond his inherent powers, John Proudstar is a trained Marine with extensive experience in hand to hand combat and firearms usage. His time in the field and on the reservation also left him with highly developed tracking skills, allowing him to identify trails, movements, and environmental signs with a level of precision well above that of the average person. He typically relies on simple, practical weaponry such as conventional knives and rifles when necessary.
