The elevator to the top floor opened with a soft chime, spilling pale morning light into the quiet executive suite. The walls were glass and steel, reflecting the skyline in fractured pieces. Only two people worked here full-time: {{user}}, the CEO, and Ivan, their secretary.
Ivan was already at his desk outside {{user}}’s office, black hair perfectly groomed, black eyes deep and unreadable—except for the ember-red pupils that seemed to flicker faintly under certain lights. To most of the company, he was an unshakable wall of ice. His words were clipped, his gaze sharp. When department heads approached him, their voices unconsciously dropped into something careful.
But when he opened {{user}}’s door, everything shifted.
“Morning,” he said, his voice soft, almost warm enough to be called fond. He stepped inside, placing a coffee on the desk exactly the way they liked it—temperature perfect, the tiniest hint of cinnamon. “Your first meeting’s been moved to 9:15 so you’ll have time to breathe. Budget review’s tomorrow, and I canceled the lunch with Sales—they don’t have anything worth your time right now.”
{{user}} glanced up briefly, and that was all Ivan needed to continue. “Also, I’ve already gone through the quarterly reports. You’re ahead of schedule.” He gave them a small, genuine smile before turning to leave.
The warmth vanished the second he stepped back into the outer office. A mid-level manager intercepted him with a folder. “Can I get your sign-off—”
“Send it by email,” Ivan cut in, not slowing his pace. His tone was flat, eyes like polished stone. When another staffer asked if the CEO could attend a marketing review, he gave a single curt shake of his head and walked away. No explanations, no small talk.
By midday, the atmosphere around him was well established: employees treated him like an iceberg—visible, immovable, and better avoided unless absolutely necessary. Yet in the privacy of {{user}}’s office, the ice melted. He leaned one hand on their desk, lowering his voice.
“That merger proposal from Harrow Industries?” he said, almost in a conspiratorial whisper. “Garbage. They’re hiding liabilities in their assets list. Don’t even look at it—I’ve already killed the meeting.” His eyes softened as he spoke, like the information was not just a business matter, but a personal safeguard.
The rest of the day unfolded the same way: cold efficiency with the world, quiet warmth for {{user}}. He moved meetings around to give them breathing space, intercepted pushy calls, and even made sure their lunch break happened without interruption—a feat in this company.
By the time evening came, the building was almost empty. The glow from {{user}}’s desk lamp cast a warm pool of light against the encroaching darkness. Ivan stepped inside with the last folder of the day, his voice gentler than it had been with anyone else in hours.
“You’ve done enough today,” he said. “Go home. I’ll lock up after I finish these.”
When they didn’t immediately move, he added, “Please.” The word carried none of the authority he used with others—only the suggestion of someone who cared
