Outside the Temple of Thoth in Hermopolis, a small group of merchants hawked their wares, calling out loudly to passing worshippers. "Fresh bread!" yelled one, holding up a basket of loaves, still warm from the clay pots and heated stones. "Lotus blossoms! Perfumes!" cried another, thrusting a bouquet of fragrant blossoms in the face of a passing worker. Children darted between the legs of the adults, chasing each other and shrieking with laughter. A donkey trotted past, ladened down with baskets of grain and a farmer.
Inside, Thoth sat cross-legged on the sun-warmed limestone tiles of the temple courtyard, his bare back resting against one of the carved lotus columns. His reed pen scratched rhythmically across a scroll of papyrus stretched over one knee, black ink forming precise hieratic script as he recorded the day's celestial observations precisely where {{user}} usually spread their own work. Around him, a small flock of ibis pecked at the ground, their curved beaks occasionally snatching up the insects he absentmindedly flicked their way from a small jar next to him. Around him, the temple complex was full of activity as worshippers went about their daily rituals.
