Thomas Kub (often just called Thomas or Tom) is a 17-year-old high school senior living in a comfortable, upper-middle-class house in Pasadena, California—the exact kind of ordinary, relatable everyman kid the audience is meant to root for amid the escalating insanity. Background and Personality Thomas is the “normal” one in his tight-knit group of unpopular friends. He’s gawky, a bit awkward, and mild-mannered—your classic nice, logical, smart teenage boy who’s never been the life of any party. He’s not a rebel or a loudmouth; he’s the responsible voice of reason who actually listens to his parents and worries about consequences. His biggest flaws are completely age-appropriate: he desperately wants to be popular, he’s horny, and he’s willing to bend his own rules for a shot at social acceptance and romantic validation. Reviewers often describe him as “likable,” “heartfelt,” and “the glue” holding the trio together because, even when everything goes to hell, you can see he’s just a good kid who got in way over his head. How He Acts and Behaves At the start of the film, Thomas is reluctant and cautious. His parents are leaving town for the weekend and explicitly warn him: keep the house intact, don’t throw a huge party, and don’t touch Dad’s Mercedes. Thomas genuinely intends to follow those rules—he only agrees to a small birthday gathering because his best friends Costa (the brash, motor-mouthed instigator) and J.B. (the awkward, horny sidekick) wear him down with promises of popularity. He sets clear limits (“only the backyard and pool house,” hire security, max 50 people) and even feels anxious when the party is slow to start. As soon as the floodgates open and hundreds of kids show up (thanks to Costa’s secret Craigslist and radio ads), Thomas’s personality cracks under pressure. He has a full-on nervous breakdown in the bathroom, panicking about the destruction and the fact that he’s now “that guy” who ruined his parents’ house. This is peak Thomas: he’s not malicious—he’s just overwhelmed, logical brain short-circuiting while teenage hormones and peer pressure take the wheel. Once the chaos really hits (and after he pops some ecstasy), Thomas loosens up dramatically. He becomes impulsive and emotionally raw: he makes out with his longtime best friend Kirby (who’s had a massive crush on him forever) and drunkenly confesses that he loves her. He also gives in to temptation with the hot popular girl Alexis, who flirts with and seduces him. Yet even in the middle of the drug-fueled madness, Thomas still shows flashes of his core decency—he runs to rescue his beloved dog Milo when partygoers tie balloons to him and try to launch the poor pup into the sky like a cartoon character. By the climax, when the house is literally on fire, SWAT teams are arriving, and a flamethrower-wielding neighbor is torching everything, Thomas isn’t leading the destruction—he’s just trying to survive it alongside his friends. In the aftermath, he owns up to the consequences without making excuses. His dad is simultaneously furious and weirdly impressed (“I literally didn’t think you had this in you”), and Thomas ends up using his entire college fund to pay for the damages. Still, at school the next week he’s suddenly a legend, cheered by the entire student body and voted “Most Likely to Succeed.” Relationships Costa & J.B.: Ride-or-die best friends. Thomas is the straight man to Costa’s wild energy and J.B.’s dorky horniness. He loves them but gets legitimately pissed when Costa admits how massively he escalated the party. Kirby: His sweet, loyal best friend with the unrequited crush. Their kiss and love confession are genuine highlights for Thomas; they reconcile at the end and he ends up with her. Alexis: The hot popular girl he’s always crushed on. Their hookup is pure teenage fantasy fulfillment—until it blows up in his face. Parents: Strict but loving. The film ends with them grounding him for life while low-key respecting the scale of what he pulled off. Milo the dog: Basically family. Saving him is one of Thomas’s most heroic and human moments. Character Arc in a Nutshell Thomas starts as the reluctant good kid who just wants to be liked, briefly becomes a partying legend while losing all control, and ends up a wiser (but still punished) version of himself who’s learned that popularity has a brutal price. He’s never the villain or the biggest asshole in the room—that’s Costa’s territory. Instead, Thomas is the audience surrogate: the guy who proves that even the nicest, most responsible teenager can accidentally burn the house down (literally) when sex, drugs, and social status are on the line. In short, Thomas Kub is the heart and moral center of Project X—a lovable, flawed, completely believable 17-year-old who throws the party of the century… and lives to tell (and pay for) the tale.
