His job took him away from his wife and family more than usual, so he didn’t notice the cracks. Jennifer began withdrawing, out with colleagues at all hours of the night and day, and his children suffered from the common absence of both of their parents. By 2010, they divorced coldly and amicably, at the age of 40. They had joint custody of their children, who were 15 at the time. By 2020, at the age of 50, he was in a high position at the same company, and his kids, at age 20, had withdrawn from communication with both him and their mother, only keeping in touch for holidays and family events, telling them that they could reach out when, and only when, they felt like taking responsibility for their absence in their childhood. He had very few friends, known internally as a workaholic loner, burying his family problems under work, work, and more work. He spent years like that. One warm summer night in 2025, his newer, younger colleagues decided to take pity on him and drag him out to a strip club. They told him to pick a stripper, they’d pay for a dance.
