Thom was born on the colony of Dwarka on October 15, 2525, where he lived until a Covenant invasion devastated the world in 2530. He managed to escape the ensuing glassing by boarding a civilian freighter, which was eventually intercepted by the Office of Naval Intelligence. Because he was identified as a prime candidate for the SPARTAN-III program, he volunteered for induction and began his training on the classified planet Onyx in late 2532. Under the guidance of Kurt Ambrose and Franklin Mendez, he distinguished himself as an elite specimen of Alpha Company. This high performance led to his extraction from the main company prior to the suicidal Operation: PROMETHEUS, allowing him to receive MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor and eventually earn a place within the specialized NOBLE Team.

By December 2551, Thom was deployed with NOBLE Team to defend the colony of Concord against a persistent Covenant occupation. After their Pelican was forced down in a blizzard in the Hinterlands, the team reached the town of Skathi to repel an approaching ground force led by a massive Draugr siege platform. Thom took part in a high speed assault alongside Kat and Rosenda, supporting the defense of their Arctic Warthog by repelling Ghost pilots with fragmentation grenades. During the engagement, he displayed his tactical versatility by hijacking a Covenant Ghost to draw enemy fire, facilitating a successful boarding action that saw the Spartans seize control of the enemy siege engine.

Following the liberation of Skathi, the team secured the area and prepared for extraction as reinforcements arrived. While teammates like Rosenda expressed concern over the longevity of their victory, Thom remained focused on the broader conflict. Colonel Urban Holland soon issued orders for the unit to redeploy to Fumirole to counter an expected attack on that system. As the team prepared to depart on separate dropships, Thom exchanged a final salute with his comrades and sent a brief communication to Rosenda to wish her luck. He left Concord with the rest of NOBLE, moving toward the mission that would eventually define the team’s future.

Thom-A293 served in Noble Team, and was considered to be youthful and humorous individual, who served as the "heart" of Noble Team during his service. Even during high-stakes firefights, he displayed a joking attitude and a penchant for ribbing his fellow teammates.

Thom has been seen employing the Mark V[B] armor with a variety of configurations. During Operation: OFFSET EYE in 2551, Thom employed a CQS48 Bulldog shotgun and his armor have a green-orange colouration. The suit was up-armored with the D0-01-CCR Breaching Kit and a UA/Type O5 attachment. He wore a HAZOP shoulder pad for his left shoulder and a UA/Multi-Threat shoulder pad for his right shoulder. Thom also had a SRT UGPS wrist piece on his wrist, the M10 Tactical Soft Case attached to his thigh, and UA/Type KT knee guards. He was also seen with a Series 8 jetpack on his back.

The Sangheili, or "Elites" as they are known by humans, served as the military leaders of the Covenant. The Sangheili are the only race within the Covenant permitted to build and command starships within the Covenant, though the crews are always composed of a mix of races. The Jiralhanae, or "Brutes" as they are known by humans, were the most recent addition to the Covenant, and served as soldiers and bodyguards within the Covenant military. The Lekgolo are a race of worm-like creatures that can combine to form large, intelligent assemblages called Mgalekgolo, known by humans as "Hunters". Clad in nearly impenetrable armor and armed with their trademark Assault Cannon, they served as the Covenant's heaviest ground troops. Hailing from Balaho, the Unggoy, or "Grunts" as they are known by humans, were the most common and low-ranking caste of the Covenant. They breathe methane gas, and thus must wear a large tank on their back full of methane to survive on other planets. The Kig-Yar, or "Jackals" or "Skirmishers" as they are known by humans, were the scouts and marksmen of the Covenant military due to their superior senses.

The Human-Covenant War was instigated by the High Prophets of the Covenant following a discovery which led them to believe that humans were directly related to the Forerunners, contradicting their ancient religion. Seeking to keep various political and religious orders intact, the High Prophets declared a holy war of genocide against the human species, and the discovery of their relation to the Forerunners was kept a secret. With superior firepower, numbers and technology, the Covenant would repeatedly overpower the UNSC across hundreds of human-inhabited worlds, including the heavily defended strongholds of Reach and Earth. Humanity would win only scattered and costly victories.
