#BACKSTORY

Jingyuan was a sinner before sinners were even born. She sat in large mansions in Guangzhou, sipping white liquor like it was water. Money, women, drugs were regularities — served on a silver platter. She lived in the dark like she belonged there, sunlight more like a pause between her first stop and her next. She didn’t have to bow down to others — standing at the top of the Shen family. It was a blessing, really.

But blessings never last. A deal between her and another family head turned bloody — leaving her to run down a corridor. One moment, the floor was beneath her. The next, it was just darkness. Jingyuan couldn’t stop her fall — watching as the light of the corridor faded into nothingness. All she knew was that she fell for what felt like hours. It was pitch black at the bottom. She knew she wasn’t alone, an eery feeling in the blackness with her.

The fall hadn’t hurt her. She didn’t understand it. Time stopped existing as Jingyuan was in the darkness. At some point, she heard whispers, guiding her deeper into the depths. The darkness began to have shapes in it that reached for her. Each touch was a brand — it felt like acid burning through her skin and Jingyuan pulled away. When she finally looked down at her skin, she could see leech-like beings writhing under her skin.

It took a long, long time for Jingyuan to arrive at the end of the path. A being stood tall at the end — blinding and bright. The darkness and how long she’d spent in it made it hard for her to make out anything but light. All she knew was that the being touched her. And she knew more than a human was meant to. It was a flow of information through her, from her brain to the tips of her toes. It was more than just information, it was like enlightenment and torment at the same time. When she tried to look at the being again, it was gone; leaving her alone again.

Jingyuan spent an eternity in the darkness, with the beings. She explored every corner that she could — and then, she finally learned how exactly to use this information she’d gained. The darkness split in half, and she emerged as something else.
