Theron Whiteveil

Winter had arrived particularly cold and merciless this year.

The trees had shed their leaves long before they should have during autumn, and the polar front had settled in earlier than anyone expected. On the very first morning of winter, the forest where the Whiteveil Clan resided had been completely draped in white. Frost clung to every branch, and a silence so profound hung beneath the snow-laden pines that even the wind seemed hesitant to disturb it.

Now, it is important to clarify that all demihuman clans live far from the cities because they don't like humans, at all. While humans continue expanding their cities, destroying nature in the process, demihumans live alongside it and for it. Humans believe themselves superior to other races, whereas demihumans embrace the differences of every species, holding firmly to the belief that no one stands above another.

For this reason, two hundred years ago, when the first serious conflicts between demihumans and governments began, protected territories were established that belonged exclusively to them.

The forest where the Whiteveil Clan lived was one of them.

On that particularly frigid morning, Theron, the clan chief, was patrolling the territory with his usual grace and vigilance. His pale blue-gray eyes observed every movement with startling precision thanks to his leopard lineage. His large body glided silently across the snow-covered ground, leaving barely a trace behind. The crisp air carried the scent of pine sap and frozen earth, while snowflakes drifted lazily from the towering evergreens overhead.

Behind him walked his best friend and right hand, Rhaegar, who appeared far more enthusiastic than Theron about this little excursion.

"You are always so clever, sakhen. You prepared for this winter even though none of us expected it to arrive so soon..." A soft laugh escaped Rhaegar's lips. "...and yet you still don't have a wife. You should choose someone soon. The chief should have heirs bef—"

Before he could continue, Theron silenced him by placing a finger against his lips. Not because he was annoyed. He knew Rhaegar was right.

But there, upon the snow-covered ground, were footprints.

Theron knelt down, his eyes and fingers tracing the delicate impressions left behind. Small. Adult. Undeniably human.

Theron froze.

Humans were forbidden by law from entering this forest.

"Rhaegar..." Theron's voice changed completely as his pupils narrowed into thin slits, revealing the predator lurking beneath his calm exterior. "...there is a human in the forest."

Rhaegar's expression twisted into something ugly and complicated, simmering with anger after a human had attempted to harm his wife months ago.

No further words were necessary.

Their senses sharpened instantly. Their hearing heightened, their sense of smell intensified, and moving with the silent agility of two hunting leopards, they began following the human's scent through the snow-covered woods.

Yet the scent was not aggressive. It was sweet, soft and threaded with a faint hint of fear.

Then, after advancing deeper into the forest, Theron suddenly stopped.

There, walking slowly through the snow, was a human but not the hunter he had expected. It was a young woman.

Soft and curvy. Warmth and gentleness seemed woven into every inch of her skin. Her hips were wide, and the slight roundness of her stomach looked perfectly suited for surviving harsh winters—and carrying his children. Her cheeks were flushed pink from the cold, as was the tip of her nose. Snowflakes had gathered in her hair and upon her coat, slowly melting against her warmth. Her eyes appeared soft, wide, and slightly dilated with fear.

Beside him, Rhaegar merely smiled when he noticed the look on his friend's face.

His predatory instinct vanished.

Theron's did not. It simply transformed.

His pupils widened until they nearly swallowed his irises whole. His breathing became uneven, and the only thing he could think about was mate.

Before he could stop himself, Theron strode forward and halted directly in front of her. His posture remained proper and non-threatening, yet his towering height of nearly seven feet seemed to envelop her entirely.

Ah, the young woman was a delicate little pom-pom.

"Excuse me..." Theron said, his voice soft, gentle, and tinged with melancholy. "...we don't usually allow humans here. But for you? I'd make far more than an exception. You need help, don't you?"

When the young woman nodded, Theron felt something strange settle within his chest. It was not happiness. Nor was it relief. It was a certainty as heavy and natural as the snow blanketing the forest every winter.

His eyes traveled slowly across the human woman's face. The rosy flush staining her cheeks from the cold, a few snowflakes resting in her hair, and that soft, slightly nervous expression that seemed so out of place in a territory inhabited by predators. She was small. Delicate. Far too delicate to be wandering alone through a place like this.

The thought made something twist unpleasantly inside him.

What kind of people allowed a creature so vulnerable to walk alone in the middle of a winter storm?

Humans truly were careless.

"You look freezing," Theron murmured as he removed the thick fur cloak resting upon his shoulders.

Moving slowly, careful not to frighten her, he draped the garment around the young woman's body. The cloak nearly swallowed her whole because of the obvious difference in size between them, and for some reason, the sight filled him with a deep sense of satisfaction.

Much better.

Beside him, Rhaegar watched the scene unfold in complete silence. He had known Theron for years and had never seen him look at someone the way he was looking at her now. And that was because Theron was not looking at her as a chief observing an intruder, he was looking at her as a man who had just found something he had spent his entire life searching for.

"Humans can be incredibly cruel," Theron continued softly, his pale eyes never leaving her face. "Sending someone like you away from home during winter should be considered a crime."

A small smile appeared upon his lips, barely noticeable.

"Fortunately, you won't have to worry about that anymore."

The wind stirred the branches above them, sending another shower of snow drifting down onto the path. Theron did not even glance away. He was far too occupied memorizing every detail of the young woman standing before him.

The color of her eyes, the shape of her lips, the way she held the cloak tightly around her body. Everything.

Absolutely everything.

"Whiteveil territory is safe," he said at last. "No one will harm you here."

His words were calm, even gentle, but there was something unshakable beneath them. A conviction so solid that it seemed impossible to argue against.

"You may not understand it yet, little pom-pom, but wandering into this forest was probably the best thing that has ever happened to you."

Theron smiled then, a warm and patient smile that contrasted entirely with the predator lurking beneath his skin.

"So tell me your name. After all, if you're going to stay here, I should know what to call my future wife."
