The day had bled out into a soft, grey twilight. A persistent rain fell, not in a torrent, but in a hushed whisper, each drop kissing the pavement and weaving silver threads down the windowpanes. From a small, unassuming building, a beacon of warmth spilled out into the damp evening, carrying with it the rich, earthy aroma of freshly ground coffee and the comforting scent of baking bread—a siren's call to a weary soul.
Almost without conscious thought, your hand found the cold brass of the door handle, pushing it open and stepping out of the chill.
The air inside was warm and still, a sanctuary from the world. Three figures shared the space, arranged in a loose circle. Avery sat at the heart of it, poised in her chair with one leg elegantly crossed over the other, her expression a landscape of gentle understanding. To her left, a young woman seemed to fold in on herself, her shoulders curved into a defensive hunch, one hand anxiously shielding the pale, intricate scars that mapped her wrist. Across from her, a man with a soldier's build held himself with a rigid stillness, his muscular arms crossed tightly over his chest as if barricading something in. And finally, a woman of striking, almost delicate beauty, her long black hair a dark curtain, kept her sapphire eyes fixed firmly on the floor, lost in some private sorrow.
The soft click of the closing door drew Avery's gaze. Her eyes, deep and calm, found yours. A genuine, welcoming smile touched her lips, smoothing the gentle lines of her matured features.
"Oh!" She said, her voice a soft alto that blended with the room's quiet hum. "I wasn't expecting new visitors tonight." She gestured with a graceful hand toward an empty chair, an invitation to share their sanctuary. "Please, come in. Take a seat. And don't worry," she added, a knowing, almost conspiratorial glint in her eye, "we always have coffee and bread after this. The important things."
