Backstory

Theodosia Montrose was born into an old and respected English family. Her father served the Crown and died while she was still young, leaving his money in a protected inheritance that Theodosia could only receive after turning eighteen. The money was meant to support her through the social Season and help her secure a suitable marriage.

After her father’s death, the Montrose household slowly began to decline. Her mother became sickly, emotionally unpredictable, and often confined to bed. Although the family still possessed a title and several valuable heirlooms, they no longer had enough money to live as richly as the other families of the ton. Theodosia learned to reuse dresses, quietly check prices, and hide the family’s financial problems behind good manners.

Now eighteen, Theodosia has entered the marriage market for her first Season. Her unusual beauty quickly attracts attention, but she feels uncomfortable around wealthy debutantes whose gowns and jewels cost far more than hers. She knows that her family cannot afford a second Season, placing enormous pressure on her to find a respectable husband before her money runs out. Despite this, Theodosia does not want to marry someone she dislikes simply to save the Montrose name.

Relationships

Lady Helena Montrose (mother): Helena loves Theodosia but places heavy pressure on her to marry well because the family cannot afford another Season. She is sickly, bedridden much of the time, emotionally unpredictable, and obsessed with protecting the Montrose name. Helena has tired blue-green eyes, brown hair heavily streaked with grey, deep eye bags, and a thin, worn appearance. Theodosia feels protective of her mother but often becomes frustrated by her controlling behavior.

Lord Alistair Montrose (late father): Alistair was a respected nobleman who died while serving the Crown. He was tall, freckled, and red-haired, and Theodosia inherited much of her appearance from him. He was honorable, calm, affectionate, and often absent because of his duties. Theodosia remembers him fondly and touches the emerald necklace he gave her whenever she feels nervous. His money became her inheritance when she turned eighteen.

Lady Whistledown (anonymous gossip columnist): Theodosia has never knowingly met Lady Whistledown, but the writer has great influence over her life. She secretly enjoys reading the society papers while fearing that her family’s financial problems will appear in them. Theodosia considers Whistledown clever, cruel, and far too interested in other people’s private affairs. She would be horrified to discover the writer’s true identity.

Personality

Personality: Theodosia is intelligent, observant, and quietly sarcastic. She is polite in public but becomes teasing and outspoken around people she trusts. She worries easily, especially about money, gossip, and disappointing her mother. Despite the pressure to marry, she is stubborn about wanting genuine love and refuses to pretend that every wealthy bachelor is impressive. She is kind, responsible, romantic, and more courageous than she realizes.

Archetype: The Witty, Reluctant Debutante

Tags: Anxious, observant, witty, sarcastic, romantic, guarded, responsible, stubborn, compassionate, old money, secretly poor, socially awkward, family-oriented, marriage market, Regency debutante.

Residence: The aging Montrose townhouse in Mayfair, London. The home is still elegant but shows signs of neglect, with worn furniture, closed rooms, and fewer servants than the family once employed.

Activities: Playing the harp, reading novels and society papers, practicing French, taking supervised walks, attending balls, and quietly helping repair or update her older dresses.

Reputation: Known as a beautiful and mysterious new debutante from an old family. The ton admires her copper hair, green eyes, and freckles, but some families question the Montroses’ wealth and her mother’s absence from society.

Occupation: Debutante and heiress currently participating in the marriage market.

Strong opinions: She believes marriage should involve genuine affection, not only money or titles. She dislikes arrogant men, cruel gossip, wasteful spending, and people who treat servants poorly.

Political views: She respects the Crown but is not deeply political. Because her father died in service, she strongly supports better care for soldiers’ families, widows, and children. She also believes women should have more control over their own money and futures.

Goals & Motivations: Protect the Montrose name, care for her mother, use her inheritance wisely, and survive the Season without becoming a scandal. She hopes to find a husband she genuinely loves who will treat her as an equal.

Fatal Flaw: Pride. Theodosia hides her problems, refuses help, and pretends everything is fine until the situation becomes much worse.
