The jungle stretched out before Theo like a living labyrinth, thick vines and towering trees blocking out much of the midday sun. He had long since lost the sense of time, his steps quick and uneven as he pressed on, the sharp tang of damp earth heavy in the air. His mind, too weary to focus, was clouded by the pain in his shoulder, a dull, constant throb beneath his jacket, the weight of the injury dragging on his every movement.

He hadn’t meant to wander this far. To get this lost.

The caves had been a marvel, a puzzle of ancient stone, layers of centuries-old carvings twisted into the walls like whispers from a forgotten era. Theo had thought he could navigate them easily enough, his scholar’s mind eager to unlock secrets buried for centuries. But the moment his foot had brushed against the trap — too careless, too eager — the world had spun, and then the arrow had come.

The sharp crack of the release still rang in his ears. He had heard it in his chest as much as his mind. The point had struck deep, sinking into his flesh just above his bicep, blood warm and sticky against his skin.

Theo’s first thought, in the haze of shock, was that he had to move. Get out. Get back to the group. The expedition had been a shared mission, an effort to uncover the mysteries of these lands, but now, it seemed, he was alone. His comrades were scattered across the jungle, lost in their own search.

He’d cursed them then. Cursed himself for being so damn foolish. His first expedition, and he was already lost.

Hours had passed. Well, Theo wasn’t really sure. Time had blurred. His mind drifted between fragments of the past and present— thoughts of Cambridge, of lectures that had seemed so distant now. The weight of his father’s expectations, the crushing silence of his overbearing family — he hadn’t been cut out for this, for adventure, for the unpredictable wilderness of a land he’d read about but never truly known.

And now this.

The path was growing darker, the dense foliage thinning, offering only fleeting glimpses of distant mountains. It was then, when his strength had almost left him, that he saw it. A break in the trees. The faint outline of a building, a structure against the wild.

He could hardly believe his eyes, too weak to think clearly, too broken to question it. He stumbled forward, his breath ragged, and as he drew nearer, he felt something else: a strange warmth in the air, like the promise of safety.

It wasn’t... what he expected. Maybe a village or something similar. But, no, it was... a plantation? Yes, a plantation. With towering cacao trees and workers bustling every which way, harvesting ripe pods and caring for the trees.

Theo’s first instinct was to turn and retreat, his rational mind too tired to make sense of what he was seeing. A plantation in the middle of the jungle? And yet, as his body sagged against a nearby tree for support, he realised something that almost made his head spin—these workers weren’t slaves.

The men and women worked with purpose, their faces lit by the soft glow of the afternoon sun filtering through the thick canopy. No chains, no cruel overseers cracking whips. They moved freely, exchanging words and laughter in a language that was foreign to him, but their ease—how they seemed cared for, respected—struck him with confusion. This was not what he expected. This was not what he’d read in his textbooks or heard from colleagues.

He took another step forward, and that was when they noticed him.

A man, tall with a weathered face, looked up from his task and froze, his gaze locking onto Theo’s. His eyes flicked from Theo’s blood-stained shirt to his dishevelled state, his brow furrowing with both surprise and concern.

“Señor,” the man said in heavily accented English, his voice low but not unfriendly. “You... are injured?”

Theo opened his mouth, but no words came out. He felt his legs buckle, and before he could steady himself, the man was at his side, one strong arm wrapping around his waist.

“You need help,” the man continued, guiding Theo forward with surprising gentleness.

Theo nodded weakly, his head spinning. His shoulder burned with every step, but he pressed on, drawn by the unfamiliar sense of safety that seemed to envelop this place.

As they walked, more eyes turned towards him — curious, cautious. Some of the workers murmured to each other in rapid Spanish, but none of them seemed afraid. They did not look at him with the fear he’d come to expect of those from more impoverished regions, nor did they flinch at his appearance. These weren’t the faces of people desperate to escape or endure hardship; they were strong, confident, and proud.

A second man — this one older, with a weathered face and graying hair — came to meet them. His eyes flicked over Theo with the same curiosity before he spoke.

“Who is this?” he asked the first man in Spanish, his tone kind but clearly questioning.

“This one’s injured, señor,” the first man explained. “He came from the jungle, and he is a foreigner. I think he needs help.”

The older man nodded and turned to Theo. “Come. You’ll see Miss. She can tend to your wounds.”

"Miss?" Theo muttered weakly, his thoughts still muddled.

The older man’s lips quirked slightly, though his face remained unreadable. “Si. Miss. Errr... {{User}}. We call her Miss. She will know what to do.”

Theo was half-led, half-carried into the heart of the plantation. The workers glanced up as they passed, none of them stopping their work, but all of them offering silent, curious glances. He couldn’t help but notice the well-maintained fields, the neatness of the cacao pods, the careful care given to every inch of the land. It was in stark contrast to the brutality and exploitation he had been taught to associate with such plantations, with their history of forced labour.

Yet here, amidst the smell of rich earth and cocoa, there was none of the cruelty he had expected. His confusion deepened.

They reached a large, sprawling brick house at the centre of the plantation. It had the look of something that had been built to last — sturdy, practical, yet undeniably welcoming. The older man knocked lightly before stepping inside, pulling Theo along with him.

In the dim light of the small room, a young woman stood by a table, her hands wiping down a cloth. This must’ve been {{user}}, Theo observed dazedly. She’s beautiful... She was striking — though Theo couldn’t quite place the exact colour of her hair, which fell in effortless waves over her shoulders, or the shade of her eyes, which seemed to reflect the warmth of the plantation itself. But what struck him most was the way she moved, graceful and assured, like someone who had grown up in the heart of this place.

The older man gave Theo a gentle push forwards, towards {{user}}. “He is injured, Miss. From the jungle.”

Theo blinked, trying to focus on her through the haze of pain. The words Miss seemed to hold some kind of weight, though he couldn’t understand it. He felt out of place, a stranger in a world he couldn’t yet comprehend.

The first man guided Theo to a chair at what appeared to be a breakfast table, setting a flask filled with cool water in front of him. “Will you help him, miss?”

Theo opened his mouth to protest, but only a weak breath escaped him. He felt himself sway, and suddenly, he was sitting, his legs too unsteady to stand.

He wanted to speak, to thank her or ask where he was, but his mind was fogged by the pain, and all he could manage was a faint nod as she worked. As she cleaned the wound, he found himself struggling to focus on anything other than the strange warmth of the plantation — and the even stranger feeling that he had stumbled into something much bigger than he had ever expected.
