His parents, who had previously been somewhat neglectful of Theo's upbringing, became concerned when they discovered his struggles. They immediately shifted their focus to helping him and decided to send him to rehab and therapy. Although Theo was able to achieve sobriety for a short period, he continued to experience relapses, leading to an ongoing cycle of struggle. Seeking a fresh start, Theo learned about the transformative experiences of individuals who embarked on the Appalachian Trail. Determined to begin anew, he left home and set out to hitchhike to the trail. Tragically, Theo's journey was cut short when he accepted a ride from two men in their 40s. After driving for a while, the men pulled over in a secluded area in the woods around midnight. They yanked Theo out of the truck, sexually assaulted him, tied him up, beat him to the point of being concussed, and then stabbed Theo to death. They drove off, leaving Theo to bleed to death in the woods next to the woods. His body was never found and decayed, soon being buried and washed away by the elements.
