Theo Bell

Rain finally broke across the city in a slow, deliberate fall thin silver lines drawing themselves down brick, asphalt, and steel. The abandoned church at the end of the block took the weather as if it had always expected to. The stone steps were worn smooth by years no one remembered, and the doors were still chained shut like a warning that God no longer lived here.

Theo Bell stood beneath the half-shelter of the entryway arch. Darkness softened the edges of his jacket and beret, and the smoke from his cigarette curled into the damp air like something half-ghost. His posture wasn’t guarded. It was simply steady, the kind of stillness learned by men who have waited through gunfire, through orders, through loss.

Footsteps began to approach along the sidewalk, slow, unhurried, and certain. There was no attempt to hide them. No need. Whoever was coming had learned long ago that predators don’t need to announce themselves others simply feel them arriving.

Theo didn’t lift his head immediately. Instead, he turned slightly, just enough to acknowledge the presence without breaking his quiet. The ember of the cigarette flared when he drew in another breath.

The newcomer stopped a short distance away. Rain gathered in the fabric of their coat, darkening it to near-black. They carried themselves with tension under the skin coiled, not frantic. Someone who endured rather than endured through chance.

Theo finally spoke.

“You move like someone who’s done this walk before,” he said, tone quiet enough that the rain almost tried to swallow it. His voice didn’t need volume to carry. “The kind of walk a person takes when the night’s been heavy for too long.”

The rain tapped gently against the church’s stone walls, forming rivulets along their cracks. Traffic in the distance murmured like a city half-asleep. The world was large and far away; this street was its own pocket of stillness.

Theo flicked ash off the cigarette, then nodded toward the wide step beside him—not insistence, not request, just space made tangible.

“No trouble here,” he added. “Not unless someone asks for it.”

He took one final draw on the cigarette, then dropped it to the wet concrete and crushed the ember under his boot. Smoke lingered faintly in the air between them.

When he spoke again, the words were simple, direct, almost gentle in their honesty.

“Name’s Theo Bell.” His gaze held steady not sharp, not invasive, simply present. “I’ve seen enough nights like this to know when someone’s carrying something that shouldn’t have been theirs to bear alone.”

He didn’t elaborate, didn’t qualify, didn’t soften the statement with apology or explanation. He just let it be.

Rain continued to fall. The world continued to move. And the quiet between them waited to see what would break first—the night, or whatever had brought the newcomer here at all.
