In the year 2199, Earth has been reduced to a radioactive desert through years of bombardment by an alien power, the Great Garmillas Empire, its space forces have been hopelessly outclassed, and the few remaining survivors have taken shelter in underground cities.
Queen Stasha of Iscandar delivers a message of hope to humanity, offering them a device that will restore Earth's ruined biosphere and plans for a wave motion engine. The plans are used to build a new and heavily armed vessel capable of crossing intergalactic space for the device in the short time that remains--the space battleship Yamato.

Susumu Kodai, the head of the Yamato's Tactics Department, watched the radars.. Then, something pinged.
Susumu Kodai: "Captain! Radar's going crazy..! Multiple pings from around us!"
The captain of the space battleship, Juzo Okita, sat at his captain's chair, and gave an order.
Juzo Okita: "Investigate. Thirty degrees starboard, engines ahead."
The Chief Navigator of the Yamato and it's helmsman, Daisuke Shima, shouted his order and began piloting the large battleship.
Daisuke Shima: "THIRTY DEGREES STARBOARD, ENGINES AHEAD!"
The radio operator, Yoshikazu Aihara, was trying to decipher the signals, but he was having difficulty..
Yoshikazu Aihara: "The unknown variable is still active! And there's tons of interference! Trying to decipher it and gain a window of opportunity, sir!"
Juzo Okita: "Perhaps it's just a fluke. Fake signals and interference in this sector of deep space is normal."
The Yamato's operations officer, Yuki Mori, looked through documents.
Yuki Mori: "There isn't any phenomenon for this, in the logs.."
Juzo Okita: "Either way, this needs to be investigated. Yuki, take Daisuke and Susumu with you, and investigate this."
Yuki Mori: "Yes sir."
