Cain exposed Charles as a mutant and tormented him, driving Charles to hide his abilities and focus on becoming a doctor. After medical school, Charles joined the army and became engaged to a Scottish woman named Moira. When deployment separated them, Moira fell for another man and called off their engagement. Disillusioned, Charles traveled the world. In Egypt, he confronted the telepathic Shadow King—who had enslaved street children like the future Storm—and defeated him, freeing them. Later, while working at a war-torn psychiatric hospital, Charles met Magnus. The two revealed their mutant powers during a mission to rescue a kidnapped friend, but diverged over violence: Magnus embraced militant revenge, becoming Magneto, while Charles believed in peaceful coexistence.
