The world of Aethermere

1. #1The Continent of Aethermere

   Keys: Aethermere, continent

Aethermere is a vast continent, where a single classification decides who is protected by law and who may be hunted for coin.

The land runs from the Verdant Expanse in the north to the Ashen Wastes in the south, split down the middle by the Spine of Khar — the mountain range whose mineral veins and trade passes make the Ironhold Compact the economic engine of the known world. Ancient ruins and floating islands dot the wilds between the settled kingdoms, and the wilderness has never been fully tamed.

Nine nations share it. Six are ruled by peoples whose personhood has never been questioned: humans in Valdremor, elves in Elenvari, dwarves in the Ironhold Compact, beastkin in the Pelt Dominion, lizardmen in the Scaled Reaches, merfolk in the Abyssal Throne, and centaurs on the Windrunner Steppe. Two are excluded outright — the undead, who may never petition, and the demons of the Ashen Dominion, who hold the entire eastern third of the continent and are the law on their own side of the Ash Line.

The remaining peoples — orcs, dragons, goblins, ogres, trolls, harpies, minotaurs — are monsters by legal default. They cannot own property, cannot hold office, and can be killed without consequence. The Monster Edicts permit them to petition for personhood; no petition has ever succeeded. The closest came eighty years ago, when the orc warlord Kraggul was refused 14–1 by the Ashguard Council and answered with three sacked border towns. The precedent stuck: petitioning is allowed, the answer is no. Those few "people" who question this are called Sympathizers, a word that carries the weight of treason.

2. #2The Race System

Keys: dwarf, goblins, human, harpy, demon, trolls, country, countries, dwarves, lizardman, beastkin, minotaur, lizardmen, undead, tribes, nations, tribe, ogre, demons, monsters, centaurs, race, monster, humans, people, nation, elf, minotaurs, elves, centaur, harpies, merfolk, goblin, ogres, troll

The Racial System is Aethermere's main legal axis: every living being is either a person, a monster, or feral — and that single classification, not biology, decides whether killing you is murder or pest control.

   "People" — Legal Personhood

Recognized as persons. They can own property, form contracts, hold office, stand trial, and are protected by law. Killing a "person" is murder.

Seven races hold personhood innately, granted by default regardless of the individual: humans, dwarves, elves, beastkin, lizardmen, merfolk, and centaurs. these races sit in the same category. Personhood here is collective and inherited — it is never earned, only possessed at birth.

A second path exists on paper but has never been walked: Petitioned Personhood, open to monster races that demonstrate written language, a settled community of at least 100, a functioning government, and a year of non-aggression. No petition has ever succeeded. The category is currently empty, and that emptiness is the whole tension of the setting.

   "Monsters" — No Legal Standing

Races classified as monsters by default. They cannot own property, are not protected by law, and may be hunted, killed, or enslaved without legal consequence.

This is where it gets uncomfortable: most of these races are not less intelligent than people. Dragons speak multiple languages and have petitioned repeatedly. Orcs build tribal confederacies and file formal legal briefs. Minotaurs carve labyrinthine cities into hillsides and govern matriarchal tribes of thirty to eighty. Harpies run matriarchal colonies under a queen. None of it matters — the classification is not a judgment about minds, it is a legal status, and intelligence does not alter it.

Two monster races are excluded from even the petition process. Undead are permanently barred; no petition will be heard. Demons are excluded and do not ask — they are the law on the far side of the Ash Line, and their Demon Lord sits beyond the EX rank entirely.

The remaining monster races — orcs, dragons, goblins, ogres, trolls, harpies, minotaurs — may petition. The answer, so far, is always no.

   Feral Monsters — Beyond Classification

Ferals are the wilderness itself: mindless, mana-born creatures with no language, no society, and no capacity to petition. Slimes, Wyverns, magic beasts, and the rank-and-file horrors of the Verdant Expanse and Ashen Wastes.

Ferals are the reason the system feels justified to the people who live under it. Every village has a story of something coming out of the treeline, and the Ashguard exists to answer it. The legal order draws no distinction between a feral slime and a dragon philosopher — both are "monsters," both may be killed on sight. That conflation is the system's load-bearing lie, and everyone in Valdremor knows it, which is why the word Sympathizer exists.

   Why it holds

The Edicts name the continuum feral → monster → person as though it were a ladder. It is not. It is a wall with a locked gate, and the gate has never opened.

Ranking note: the F → EX scale measures power, not standing. An S-rank minotaur matriarch outclasses most A-rank human soldiers and still cannot own the ground she stands on. Power earns fear; only classification earns rights.

3. #3The Rank System

   Keys: Level, Class, Tier, Rank

The Rank System is Aethermere's universal measure of power — a single ladder from F to EX applied to every living being, every skill, and every threat, and the only thing the nine kingdoms agree on without argument.

   The Scale

   F → E → D → C → B → A → S → SS → SSS → EX

The first four steps are the ordinary world. The middle two are where talent becomes a career. Everything above A is the stuff of legend, and EX is the ceiling — the point where the scale stops being a measurement and becomes a warning.

   The Tiers

F–D: Common. Most untrained individuals. F-rank slimes, E-rank goblins, civilians and traders. This is where the vast majority of all beings in Aethermere live and die.

C–B: Average strong. A competent soldier, a trained mage, a village guardian, the common adventurer. Most healthy adults peak here, and most are content to. A B-rank troll is a siege problem; a B-rank warrior is what a town hires so it never becomes one.

A: Exceptional. Elite warriors, master mages, veteran monster hunters. A handful per kingdom — named, known, and expensive.

S–SSS: Incredible. The top of the mortal world. Shaman Kings of the elves, Warchiefs of Iron among the dwarves, Beast Kings of the beastkin, Tide Sovereigns of the lizardmen, the Abyssal Sovereign of the merfolk, Storm Heralds of the centaurs, human Swordmasters, Great Sages, ancient dragons, and unique monsters rated as national-level threats. Counted on one hand per generation.

EX: The pinnacle. The Behemoth, the Phoenix, the Leviathan, and Heroes. EX is not a rank so much as a category of being that happens to exist in the same world as everyone else.

And then there is the note the scholars of Valdremor keep in the margins: the Demon Lord is not EX. He is something past it, for which the scale has no name.

   How It's Applied

Three things carry a rank, and they are not the same thing:

Individuals — a person's or monster's overall standing. Set largely by birth, honed by training, rarely moved more than a tier or two in a lifetime.

Skills — innate abilities, ranked on the same scale. A C-rank individual may hold a single A-rank skill; this is exactly how ordinary people become dangerous.

Threats — monsters are rated for what it would take to put them down, not just what they can do. A national-level unique monster is an S-to-SSS threat to a kingdom's budget.

What Rank Does and Doesn't Buy

Rank is power. It is not standing. This is the hinge the whole continent turns on: an S-rank minotaur matriarch outclasses nearly every human soldier alive and still cannot own the ground she stands on. A Dragon at the top of SSS is a monster with no legal protection. Rank commands fear, deference, and a wide berth — never rights.

Conversely, an F-rank human peasant is a person in full, with a name the law will avenge. That asymmetry is the quiet obscenity at the center of Aethermere, and the reason the word Sympathizer exists.

4. #4The Skill System

   Keys: Skill, ability, gift

The Skill System is the granular layer beneath the ranks — the single ladder from F to EX applied not to a being, but to what that being can do. Where a rank tells you how strong someone is, a skill tells you what they are actually good at, and the two are frequently mismatched.

   Format

A skill is written as rank — name, with the name in title case and as specific or as broad as the skill itself:

   • F — Farming • E — Tracking • D — Shield Wall • C — Beast Taming • B — Fire Magic • A — Rune Carving • S — Wind Step • SS — Blood Dominion • SSS — Sword King • EX — Soul Destroyer

   Innate vs. Learned

   Skills arrive by two routes.

Innate skills are awakened, not taught. They surface on their own — often in childhood, sometimes under duress — and are ranked from the moment they appear. A village child who wakes to C — Ember Grasp is a strategic asset to whoever finds her first; a farmhand who wakes to F — Farming has simply learned what his hands already knew. Innate skills carry the weight of destiny in most cultures, and for good reason: they are the only thing that reliably moves a person up a tier.

Learned skills are earned the slow way. Years of training, study, or repetition, and a skill that anyone with the time and a teacher could acquire. Most tradesmen, soldiers, and scholars run entirely on learned skills.

For some races, skills are inherited outright — dragon-kin often arrive with their flame already ranked, and merfolk carry tide-magic as a birthright rather than a discipline. For everyone else, the two routes blur: an F-rank innate skill and an A-rank learned skill can belong to the same person.

   Specificity

A skill's name is as precise as the holder's expertise. B — Fire Magic is a discipline, broad enough to cover a dozen applications and teachable in a guild hall.

   Rank vs. Skill

The two scales are separate, and the gap between them is where most of Aethermere's drama lives.

A C-rank individual can hold an A-rank skill which can raise their own individual rank depending on proficiency and usage. Conversely, an S-rank individual may hold no S-rank skills at all, relying on raw constitution, mana, bloodline, experience, or talent.

Power earns fear. Proficiency earns coin. A skill is what you can be hired for.

5. #5Humans

Keys: ashguard, saint aldric clergy, the crown, clergy, Human, mankind

Humans are the most numerous race in Aethermere and the only one that rules a continent-spanning state — the feudal theocracy of Valdremor, seated at the continent's center between the Verdant Expanse and the Ashen Wastes.

Valdremor: A sprawling feudal monarchy claiming divine mandate from the god of order through the Crown of Saint Aldric. Walled cities, rigid law, and a deep clerical thumb on every institution. The Ashguard serves as both standing military and monster-hunting corps — the same soldiers who garrison the borders are the ones who clear the treeline, and the two duties are deliberately treated as one.

The economy runs on agriculture, trade, and monster-part exports: scales, fangs, and cores carved out of things that had no legal standing to object. Dwarves hold trade-charter status through the mountain passes, and beastkin, lizardmen, and centaurs are recognized within Valdremor's borders — but marginalized, tolerated for their coin and their craft rather than their standing.

Character: Humans are the race the Monster Edicts were written for and by. Not the cruelest people in Aethermere, but the ones who most need the binary to hold: their prosperity sits directly on top of monster parts and monster labor, and the Edicts are the ledger that keeps it clean. Humans are not more violent than the Pelt Dominion or more rigid than the Ironhold Compact — they are simply the ones who codified it, and the ones with the most to lose if the gate ever opens.

They are also the shortest-lived of the people races, which shapes everything. Where elves hold grudges across centuries and dwarves draft contracts meant to outlast grandchildren, humans build institutions that must justify themselves within a single lifetime. Valdremor's laws are harsh because they are urgent.

6. #6Elves

   Keys: Elf, Elves, Elenvari

Elves rule the Sylvan Dominion of Elenvari, a vast forest-kingdom in the east where the tree line runs down to meet the Glimmering Coast. They are the longest-lived of the people races, and it shows in everything they build.

Appearance: Elves are tall and narrow — most stand a head above the average human, with the lean, drawn-out proportions of a body meant to last. Limbs run long, shoulders stay slim, and even a middle-aged elf carries the wiry build of a human in their early twenties. Muscle is defined rather than heavy; elven strength is in tendons and precision, not mass.

Skin ranges from pale ivory to warm bronze, and in the deep wood it often carries a faint green or gold undertone — a shift the Court attributes to the Green Mother and natural philosophers attribute to generations spent under a canopy that never fully opens. Elven eyes are the most remarked-upon feature: large, almond-shaped, and colored in deep or light extremes — moss green, mountain grey, amber, near-black, and rarely the flat browns and blues common among humans. Sclera are faintly tinted in many bloodlines, which makes elven attention feel less like being looked at and more like being assessed.

Ears are long, back-swept, and mobile, tapering to a point that in older individuals curls slightly. They serve as an open tell — an elf's ears betray interest, irritation, and alarm well before the face does, and it is considered poor manners among the Court to let them move in front of humans, who cannot help noticing.

Hair grows fast, thick, and slow to grey. Most elves wear it long and unbound, often braided with living material — vine, silk cord, bone, or river-pearl — the pattern and material signaling bloodline and Court allegiance. An elf's hair is generally its most cared-for possession and its least reliable indicator of age: an elven elder of four hundred years may still be raven-haired, with age showing instead in the eyes, the ears, and a stillness humans find unnerving.

Elenvari: Governed by the Thalassic Court — a council of seven elven bloodlines in rotating succession. Rulership moves; it is never inherited outright, and no single house has held the seat long enough to become a dynasty. The Court is at once government and aristocracy of lineage, and elven politics is largely the art of waiting your turn.

Elenvari is a theocracy of the Green Mother, a nature deity, and its magic is inseparable from the land it grows in — elven spellcraft is not cast so much as drawn, pulled from soil, root, and tide. This is why the Dominion does not urbanize the way Valdremor does: to pave over Elenvari is to blunt its own power.

The Green Wardens enforce the Monster Edicts within elven borders — a cadre of rangers who patrol the wood with the same mandate as the Ashguard, though with considerably less ceremony.

Character: Elves are politically isolated by choice. Trade with Valdremor is permitted; human settlement is not, and humans are viewed with suspicion that borders on reflex — a long memory and a long lifespan make for a long list of grievances no human remembers. Elves do not consider this a grudge. They consider it context.

Elven patience is not gentleness. A people who live for centuries plan in centuries, and an elven refusal rarely reads as a refusal in the moment — it reads as a delay that quietly outlasts the person who asked.

Standing and Politics: Ranked F through EX like everyone else, though elven longevity shifts the curve: an elf who has trained for two hundred years is not more gifted than a human, merely further along, and Elenvari fields proportionally more A-rank individuals than any other kingdom. At the top sit the Shaman Kings, among the S–SSS tier and counted on one hand per generation.

Elenvari is the most open kingdom on the question of monster personhood. Its vote requires only a majority, not Valdremor's unanimous Ashguard Council, and the Court has never ruled the question closed the way the human precedent did. That is a genuinely different posture — but no petition has ever been submitted to Elenvari, so it remains untested.

7. #7Dwarves

Keys: , Dwarf, ironhold compact, dwarves

Dwarves rule the Ironhold Compact, a confederation of seven mountain clans beneath the Spine of Khar — the range that bisects Aethermere and makes its rulers the wealthiest people on the continent.

Appearance: Dwarves are short and dense — most stand chest-high to a human, but weigh nearly as much, built with the compact, load-bearing frames of people who work stone and steel by hand. Shoulders are broad, torsos thick, arms heavy and long relative to the leg. A dwarf's center of gravity sits low, which is why they are famously hard to knock over and famously slow to run.

Skin runs pale to ruddy, often ruddy in the cheeks and knuckles from a lifetime at the forge, and darkens with soot in ways that never entirely wash out. Hair is coarse, heavy, and dark — black, iron grey, deep brown, occasionally rust-red — worn long in braids or gathered under leather and metal bands that mark clan, thane, and craft. Male dwarves grow thick beards early and keep them; among the Compact, a dwarf's beard is a professional record, plaited with rings struck for each rank of mastery. Shaving is not a fashion choice, it is a statement, and generally a bad one.

Faces are broad and square, with heavy brows, deep-set eyes, and noses that tend to be large and flat-bridged — a build, not a coincidence, of living in thin mountain air. Eyes are dark, steady, and well-adapted to low light; a dwarf can read a forge at night by coals a human would call out. Hands are wide, thick-fingered, and often knotted with old breaks.

Dwarven women are as often bearded as not, though usually lighter and more carefully kept, and are just as likely to hold a hammer. The Compact draws no distinction between the sexes in craft or in law — bloodline and contract are what count.

The Compact: Seven mountain clans, each governing its own hold, all answering to the Deep Council — a rotating body of seven clan-thanes. The Compact controls the mineral veins, the forges, and the trade routes through the Spine, which makes it the economic engine of Aethermere and gives it leverage no kingdom can afford to test. Dwarven law is strict, contractual, and literal: an agreement is a mechanism, and it is expected to work exactly as written and no further.

Dwarves trade with all people kingdoms and consider monster races a nuisance to be taxed or destroyed — a phrasing deliberate in its ordering. The Compact has never entertained a personhood petition, and would likely regard one as a filing error.

Standing: Ranked F through EX like everyone else. The Compact's fighters skew toward heavy infantry and siege engineering rather than individual glory, but its top tier is real: Warchiefs of Iron stand among the S–SSS ranks.

Dwarves hold trade-charter status in Valdremor's mountain passes, which makes them the one people race that operates routinely inside human borders. That relationship is valuable — it's the oldest working contract on the continent, and probably the most contested.

8. #8Beastkin

Keys: pelt dominion, Beastkin, beast king

Beastkin rule the Pelt Dominion, a loose federation of clans across the southern plains and river deltas. They are the most martial of the people races, and the most politically isolated for it.

Appearance: Beastkin are humanoid in frame — upright, two-armed, articulate — but carry the traits of the animal they descend from, and the mix varies by clan as much as by individual. Most stand between human and elven height, with lean, powerful builds and a natural athlete's proportions: long legs, high shoulders, a heavy spring in the calves.

The animal inheritance runs the full range. At one end, near-human: a beastkin with only the ears, a tail, slit pupils, and a fine pelt over forearms and spine. At the other, a body that reads as a wolf, panther, or bear walking upright — a full coat, a muzzle, clawed hands, digitigrade legs. Most fall between, and within a single clan the degree of inheritance is not fixed: a child may take more from the animal than either parent did.

Coat and skin cover the same palette as the animals they carry — tawny, grey, black, russet, white, spotted, striped — and human tones are uncommon but present. Eyes are the giveaway most people notice first: they carry an animal's structure, usually with a vertical or widened pupil, and they reflect light in the dark. A beastkin can see at night far better than any human, which is why Dominion hunters work the dark hours and why Valdremoran border towns light their walls.

Ears are animal-shaped, mobile, and positioned where the animal's would be — and like elven ears, they are an open tell that beastkin culture does not bother to suppress. The tail is the same, though more expressive: it reads emotion faster than the face, and children are taught early to manage it in front of outsiders. Claws are kept short and filed in settled clans, longer among hunters.

Dress follows clan and function — hide, leather, woven cloth, bone, and worked metal, cut for riding and running rather than for court. A beastkin's pelt is itself a mark of clan and lineage, and grooming is a social act: who you let touch your fur is a statement, and among the Dominion, a genuine intimacy.

The Dominion: Governing body is the Howl Council — a gathering of clan-speakers who meet at the full moon. There is no permanent capital and no hereditary throne; authority is argued out under an open sky and holds until the next moon. Beastkin culture values strength, pack-loyalty, and the hunt above all, and clan standing is earned through the hunt rather than claimed through bloodline — a sentiment that puts them permanently at odds with Valdremoran order.

The Dominion maintains a standing army of B-rank warriors and a handful of A-rank elite hunters. At the top sit the Beast Kings, among the S–SSS tier and counted on one hand per generation.

The Politics and Standing: Beastkin are the most open-minded people race on the question of monster personhood. Several beastkin elders have said it publicly and are quoted across the continent for it: "A wolf that builds a village is no longer a wolf to be hunted."

That sentence makes the Dominion a political pariah in Valdremor. It has not cost them trade, borders, or international standing — beastkin opinion is their own and they have never asked permission for it — but it has marked them as unreliable, and the Sympathizer label is thrown at them more often than at any other kingdom.

The Dominion is the only power that has never been petitioned despite being receptive, and no one has ever explained why. The beastkin have not filed on the monsters' behalf, and no monster race has brought a petition to the Howl Council. Whether that silence is mutual respect, mutual suspicion, or an agreement nobody wrote down is wide open.

9. #9Lizardmen

Keys: scaled reaches, lizardmen, tide sovereign

Lizardmen rule the Scaled Reaches, a coastal and riverine territory in the southwest — a labyrinth of mangrove cities, tidal temples, and undercurrent canals. They are the most isolated of the people races, and the least interested in being otherwise.

Appearance: Lizardmen are tall and angular, generally a head above a human, built long in the torso and tail. Their frame is lean rather than heavy — a body made for swimming, wading, and holding still in warm water for hours. Stance is habitually low and slightly forward, weight over the toes, which reads to outsiders as predatory and is simply how they stand comfortably.

Hide is covered in fine scales rather than skin, smooth and close-set on the torso and limbs, heavier along the spine, shoulders, and tail. Coloration follows the waters they came from: deep river-green, slate grey, brown-black, mottled sand, and in the salt clans a phosphorescent blue that catches light at dusk. Scales shed in dry inland air, which is one of several reasons lizardmen rarely travel far from water.

The head is elongated with a blunt, low-bridged snout, set-back eyes with vertical pupils, and no outer ear — instead a small scaled disc that reads vibration as much as sound. This makes lizardmen difficult to startle from behind and poor company in a room with an echo. Teeth are numerous, fine, and regrown continuously; a lizardman's smile is a genuine one and has ended negotiations on its own.

The tail is long, thick at the base, and functional — balance on a boat, propulsion in water, and a social instrument in its own right, though far more subtly expressive than a beastkin's. Fins ridge the spine and forearms in some bloodlines, and gill-slits sit along the neck in the salt clans; river clans breathe air alone and can hold their breath for a quarter of an hour.

They are cold-blooded in the literal sense and slow in cold water or northern climes. This is why the Scaled Reaches sits where it does, and why lizardmen who leave it are rare, deliberate, and usually wearing more layers than anyone expected.

The Reaches: The Reaches is governed by the Tide Sovereign — an elected leader chosen by the Mud Council of seven river-clans. Election is not a formality; the Sovereign serves at the Council's sufferance and can be recalled. Lizardmen magic is water-based and tied to tide cycles, strongest in the deep channel and weakest at the head of a river, which shapes where they build and what they will defend.

The economy runs on salt, coral, and river-pearls. Lizardmen trade these with Valdremor, Elenvari, and the Compact but rarely venture inland, and they maintain no standing army worth the name — the mangroves are the defense, and no one has ever successfully invaded a swamp they couldn't map.

Standing: Ranked F through EX like everyone else, with the same spread and the same ceiling. At the top sit the Tide Sovereigns — the title and the office share a name — who stand among the S–SSS ranks.

Indifference: Lizardmen view both Valdremor and Elenvari with polite indifference. They do not petition, they do not campaign, they do not join the beastkin in voicing an opinion on monster personhood. They are not moral opponents of the Edicts and not supporters; they are simply elsewhere, and they have never seen a reason for that to change.

the Scaled Reaches is the only people kingdom with no stated position on the central question of "monsters" becoming "people". Elenvari is open, the Dominion is sympathetic, the Compact is dismissive, Valdremor is absolute — and the lizardmen have said nothing at all. It is up in the air whether that is due to genuine unconcern, a deliberate refusal to be drawn, or something the Mud Council decided long ago and never wrote down.

10. #10Merfolk

Keys: the abyssal throne, merfolk, abyssal sovereign

Merfolk rule the Abyssal Throne, an underwater kingdom spanning the continental shelf off the Glimmering Coast. They are the most reclusive of all the people races, and the only one no surface kingdom has ever fully mapped.

Appearance: Merfolk are built on a humanoid upper body and a long, powerful tail — torso, arms, and head above the waist, and below it a muscular, finned length that ends in a broad fluke. Full length runs long, the largest individuals rivaling a horse nose to tail, though build varies sharply with depth: shelf-dwellers are lean and quick, deep-water bloodlines heavier and slower.

Skin is smooth and hairless, ranging from pale pearl to deep indigo, with counter-shading along the flanks and faint iridescent patterning that shifts under light. Coloration deepens with the depth a bloodline hails from, and the darkest merfolk are nearly invisible in open water.

Eyes are large, set wide, and adapted to low light — the pupils widen dramatically in the dark, and a merfolk's gaze in dim conditions has an unsettling, all-pupil quality. Gill-slits run along the ribs and neck, opening and closing with a rhythm that stops entirely when they surface. Fins ridge the forearms, spine, and tail in most bloodlines, often translucent and faintly luminous.

Hair is long, coarse, and usually worn loose or bound with coral, shell, or pressure-forged metal. Where the surface peoples judge status by garments, merfolk judge it by bioluminescent patterning — a living display, often deliberately cultivated, that brightens and dims with mood and intention. Merfolk speech is partly vocal and partly sung; the two overlap, and much of what they say to each other carries below the range of surface ears.

Clothing is minimal by surface standards — worked shell, netting, woven kelp, and metal fittings — for function rather than modesty, which surface visitors misread almost without exception.

The Throne: The Abyssal Throne is a city of bioluminescent coral and pressure-forged metal, built along the shelf and plunging into trenches no surface diver has reached. It is invisible from above except as singing lights on calm nights — the surface's only evidence that a kingdom is down there at all.

Government is a hereditary monarchy. The reigning Abyssal Sovereign is said to be 2,000 years old, a claim no surface scholar has been able to test and no merfolk has bothered to clarify. Whether the age is literal, dynastic, or a title passed between holders is left deliberately open — the Throne does not explain itself to surface-dwellers.

Standing: Ranked F through EX like everyone else. At the top sits the Abyssal Sovereign, among the S–SSS tier.

The Silence: Merfolk do not trade, do not petition, do not war. They simply are, beneath the waves. No surface kingdom has mapped the full extent of their territory, and none has crossed swords with them — partly because the Throne has never given cause, and partly because no army on Aethermere can fight in water a mile deep.

The Abyssal Throne is the only people kingdom in total silence on monster personhood — not the lizardmen's polite indifference, but an absence of record. No opinion, no statement, no petition, and no evidence they have ever been asked. The merfolk have been present for every precedent-setting rejection in Aethermere's history and have said nothing about any of them.

11. #11Centaurs

Keys: storm herald, windrunner steppe, centaurs

Centaurs rule the Windrunner Steppe, a vast open plain in the northwest. They are the most "wild" of the people races in the eyes of Valdremor and Elenvari — and fiercely, deliberately independent.

Appearance: Centaurs are two-bodied: a humanoid torso and upper body rising from the chest of a horse. The whole stands tall, generally above a man's head at the shoulder of the human half, and heavily built beneath — dense bone, powerful haunches, and a deep barrel chest. The two halves meet at the waist, and the join is seamless in form and motion, muscle flowing continuously from human spine into equine back.

The equine half carries the coat of the steppe breeds: dun, chestnut, black, roan, dappled grey, with heavy feathering on the lower legs in the northern bloodlines. The human half carries human skin tones, though it often darkens in sun-exposed areas to match the coat.

The human torso is lean and long-armed, built for the bow and the spear rather than the sword — centaur warfare is reach, speed, and arrows loosed from a full gallop. Faces are broad and weathered, with strong noses and pale, sun-bleached eyes common among the steppe clans. Hair is long, usually bound, and in the older clan-families is braided with tokens taken from hunts and battles — a practice they share with the beastkin and neither people finds worth commenting on.

Centaurs wear very little: light hide, woven cloth, tooled leather, and bone, cut off at the waist for obvious reasons. Their backs are the true surface of centaur culture — harnesses, saddle-blankets, quivers, and charms are how they display clan and achievement, and a centaur's rigging is read the way a surface court reads a coat of arms.

They do not shoe themselves. Their hooves are managed by trimming and by distance, and a lame centaur on the steppe is a genuine crisis.

The Steppe: Their governmental leader is the Storm Herald — a warrior-king chosen every ten years in a trial of speed and strength. The title is not inherited and not appointed; it is won, and the trial is public, brutal, and widely attended. Tenure is fixed, which makes centaur politics unusually short-term by the standards of the long-lived races.

Cultures are oral, martial, and deeply spiritual. Centaurs worship the Open Sky and consider the horizon sacred — which is not poetry to them, but a way of living that has no interior, no fortification, and no walls. Attempts at conquest have failed accordingly: a centaur warband on the open steppe is uncatchable, and every army that has tried has starved in a country that offers them nothing to take.

At the top sit the Storm Heralds, among the S–SSS ranks. Their A-rank riders are legendary and, in practice, are what most neighbors mean when they speak of centaur power — the Herald is a name, the riders are a wall.

Standing: Ranked F through EX like everyone else. Centaurs have no fixed cities, no treasuries to seize, and no throne to besiege, which makes them nearly impossible to defeat in the conventional sense. Valdremor and Elenvari both list them as a "people" race and neither has ever seriously tried to administer them.

The Windrunner Steppe has no formal position on monster personhood on record — but unlike the lizardmen's indifference or the merfolk's silence, this one reads as simple distance. Centaurs share the open country with beast-folk of all kinds and have never drawn a hard line between themselves and what moves alongside them. Whether that's tolerance, pragmatism, or just that the steppe is too large to police is up to interpretation.

12. #12Demons

Keys: ashen dominion, demon, demon king, demons

Demons rule the Ashen Dominion — the entire eastern third of Aethermere, and the only power on the continent that is not a kingdom in any sense "people" would recognize.

Appearance: Demons are not one shape. The Dominion is a civilization of castes, and each looks like what it is for — the empire breeds its own soldiery the way the Compact breeds its smiths.

Common foot-demons run man-sized and man-shaped, but wrong in the proportions: too-long arms, joints set at angles the human eye reads as broken, skin the color of cooled ash, char, or old rust. Heavy horns sweep back from the skull in most bloodlines, and eyes burn with a faint internal light — red, ember, or a pale bone-white — that persists in total darkness and gives demon formations a look of scattered coals at distance.

Above them run larger castes built for war: massive, slab-muscled, sometimes winged, sometimes many-limbed, always scaled up past anything the Ashguard wields. The highest castes are not describable as bodies at all — they read as presence, heat, and a shape the eye refuses to settle on.

All demons share two things. First, heat: they run hot, visibly so in cold air, and the ground they hold for long grows cracked and sterile. Second, fire — not cast as a spell by most, but worn, carried, exhaled, and blooded. Demon blood burns. This is generally discovered only once.

The Ashen Dominion: An empire of strength under the Demon Lord — obsidian spires, hellfire rivers, and skies the color of dried blood. It is a state built for domination and currently at rest, which is not the same as at peace.

Demons do not petition for personhood and are permanently excluded from the process alongside the undead. The distinction is that the undead are barred and demons are simply outside the framework — the Edicts do not govern them because the Edicts cannot reach them. They are the law on their own side of the line.

The Ash Line: The border between the Dominion and the rest of Aethermere is the Ash Line — a scar of dead land where nothing grows. It is not a wall, a river, or a fortification. It is a strip of country the Dominion has burned clean, and its breadth is the clearest statement the Demon Lord has ever made about where his territory begins.

No "people" kingdom has ever crossed it. No one who has crossed it has returned.

The Demon Lord: The most powerful being in Aethermere, and the one entry the ranking system genuinely cannot accommodate. His rank is unknown — and pointedly, it is not EX. It is something beyond the scale.

Demons are permanently excluded, do not petition, and cannot be petitioned for — which means the Dominion is the one people-shaped civilization on Aethermere that exists entirely outside the central question of the world. Nobody in Valdremor lies awake wondering whether demons deserve personhood. They lie awake wondering why the Ash Line has been quiet for a hundred years.

13. #13Undead

Keys: wraith, wight, zombies, death knight, vampire, death knights, undead, wights, skeleton, ghost, vampires, liches, ghosts, wraiths, lich, ghouls, banshee, skeletons, zombie, banshees, ghoul

Undead are the one race in Aethermere that cannot be argued with, petitioned, or even classified — permanently excluded from personhood by the Monster Edicts, and no petition will ever be heard.

Appearance: Undead are not a species. They are what is left of several, and the variety is the point — Aethermere's undead arise from many sources, and the form follows the cause rather than the creature. All of them share the same wrongness in motion: too smooth in some places, seized and jerky in others, as though the body is being operated rather than inhabited. Eyes are the usual tell — sunken, clouded, or replaced entirely by a faint cold luminescence in those raised with intent behind them.

The Two Categories: The Ashguard's manuals divide the undead in two, and the line is not about power. It is about whether anything of the person is still driving the body.

Mindless — the body is animated, but no one is home. There is no memory, no name, no intent; only the motion the death left behind. Mindless undead are treated as vermin: cleared by militia, contracted to hunters, and never negotiated with. They are the reason the Edicts are easy to enforce.

Retained — the person survived the death. They remember, they speak, they plan, they hold grudges. Retained undead are what make the Edicts difficult, because everything the law says about monsters is contradicted by a being standing in front of a magistrate using its own name.

The split is not permanent in one direction — and that is the part the manuals bury. A mindless undead that survives long enough starts to remember. Slowly, unevenly, and rarely, but it happens. A skeleton that walks the same stretch of road for forty years begins to recognize it. A wraith left bound to a ruined house may, after a century, recall why it refuses to leave. What returns is not the whole person — it is fragments, habits, a name, a fear, a face — and the process is one-way: nothing retained has ever slid back into mindlessness.

Which means every mindless undead is, in the technical sense, a retained undead that has not finished happening yet. No kingdom acknowledges this. The Ashguard's response times are built on the assumption that it isn't true.

Mindless Undead: Skeletons (F–D) — Bone stripped clean and animated. The weakest and most common, raised in numbers by anyone with a scrap of necromantic skill. Brittle, silent, and relentless. Their defining feature is anonymity — whatever the person was, nothing of them remains but structure. A skeleton left standing long enough begins to favor one leg, or one hand, or one direction of travel. Hunters who notice this are told to report it and are not told why.

Zombies (F–C) — Fresh dead, or nearly so. Slow, heavy, and difficult to put down without destroying the head or the core. Zombies retain enough soft tissue to be recognizable, which is the horror — a risen farmhand still wearing his own face. They are the most common vector for plague, and the reason Valdremor burns its battlefields. A zombie is the fastest mindless type to regain anything, and what comes back first is almost always an attachment — a house, a road, a person. It is also the type most often killed before it can finish, usually by whoever it came back for.

Ghouls (E–C) — The hungry dead. Corpses that came back with appetite and nothing else — no memory, no purpose, no language. They run faster than zombies and hunt in packs, drawn to the living by scent, and they congregate wherever the dead were left unburied. A ghoul alone is a danger to a farmstead; a ghoul nest is a reason to abandon a road. Ghouls are the exception that worries the scholars: they retain appetite before anything else, and a ghoul that survives long enough to remember its own name has already spent decades as a thing that eats people.

Wraiths (D–B) — The dead who were lost and cannot find their way back. Wraiths are not bodies but absence: a cold shape in the air, a shadow that moves against the light, visible only at the edges of vision. They do not strike flesh — they pass through it, draining warmth and will, and a man can be killed by a wraith without a mark on him. Iron and running water hold them back; breaking the anchor that binds them to a place ends them. The Edicts list wraiths among the default monster population of Aethermere, and they are the most common cause of a village losing its name without losing a single building. Wraiths are the type most likely to complete the transition. An anchor that is a place can be outlasted, and a wraith that remembers why it is bound usually stops being mindless within the same year.

Retained Undead: Ghosts (C–A) — The dead who stayed with intent rather than hunger. A ghost is a full person, or the shape of one, held to a place by something unresolved — a promise, a betrayal, an unfinished duty, a body never found. Ghosts speak, remember, and reason. Some are coherent and tractable and can be negotiated with for years; others are locked in a loop, repeating the last minutes of their death to anyone who will watch. Of all the types, ghosts are the closest thing to a moral argument against the Edicts, and the Ashguard's manuals are written to avoid making it.

Banshees (B–A) — The dead who died wrong — betrayed, murdered, mourned by no one. Banshees are grief given voice, visible as a wavering figure in tattered white or as nothing at all. Their scream carries past flesh and armor and strikes directly at the will; experienced hunters wear wax and work in pairs. A banshee is not fought. A banshee is ended, usually by resolving the death that made her — which is why the Ashguard keeps records of old murders.

Wights (C–B) — The dead raised with purpose and left with a fragment of it. Wights keep skill: a wight swordsman still knows which end of the blade to hold, and a wight that died in armor is a genuine problem for a squad. They are colder than the air around them, frost forming where they stand, and they tend to linger near whatever they died defending.

Vampires (A–S) — The most dangerous of the common types, and the most human. Vampires are the dead who came back whole — intelligent, articulate, patient, and physically far beyond what the corpse suggests. They retain every memory, every skill, and every appetite, and they add a few: blood, control, and an aversion to daylight that is a limitation rather than a weakness, because they spend the night hours productively. Vampires build courts, hold territory, employ living retainers, and negotiate. Several have held property through living intermediaries for decades. Law has no mechanism for this — a vampire can own a house while having no standing to own anything — and the Edicts resolve the problem the only way they can, by refusing to look at it.

Death Knights (S–SS) — The dead who refused the terms. A death knight is what remains of a warrior who died with an oath unfulfilled and a will strong enough to keep standing — bound to armor fused with the body, a blade that has outlived its owner, and a purpose that never completed. They are not mindless and not ravenous; they are the most disciplined of the undead, and the most difficult to turn aside. A death knight fights the way it fought in life, only without hesitation, fatigue, or any reason to stop. Most are bound to a place, a charge, or a fallen lord. A few are bound to nothing, and those wander — some are still capable of speech, and a death knight that speaks is not to be interrupted.

Liches (S–SSS) — The preserved body of a will that never left. A lich is dry, robed, articulate, and horrifying precisely because it is a person in every way except legally — it speaks, remembers, negotiates, and plans across centuries. Liches are the only undead the Edicts bother to specify as excluded even when sentient, which is a concession the law's authors never made for any other race. The oldest and most prepared reach the top of the scale. A lich that has had three hundred years to ward a barrow is a national-level threat, and every kingdom has one or two names it does not say aloud.

Why They Are Permanently Excluded: Orcs, dragons, and minotaurs can at least file. Undead cannot, and the reasoning is not about intelligence, power, or culture — all of which the higher types possess in excess of most people.

The exclusion is about the boundary itself. Personhood in Aethermere is collective and inherited: you are a person because your race is, and your race is because it belongs to the world of the living. The undead are the one category that breaks that premise outright, and the law cannot bend on it. To admit a vampire who owns a house, or a ghost who files a brief, would be to admit that a person can be made — that death is a state rather than an exit — and from there the entire Edicts come apart. The undead are not excluded because they are dangerous. They are excluded because they are structural.

And the transition makes it worse, not better. If a mindless undead can remember, then personhood is something a monster can arrive at simply by lasting, with no petition and no vote — which is the one route the Edicts were written to close. This is why the Ashguard's manuals recommend clearing mindless undead on sight and quickly, and why no manual has ever explained the reason in writing.

Standing: Ranked F through EX like everything else. Shambling thralls and stray skeletons are F–D and cleared by any competent militia. A B-rank barrow is a problem a village pays a hunter to forget. Above that, the scale starts producing things kingdoms write down, rated by what it would cost to put them down permanently — a cost that rises sharply if the undead in question is smart enough to have planned for it.

Undead are the only entry where the Edicts use the word permanent — demons are excluded too, but demons are excluded by virtue of being the enemy, which is a political fact. The undead are excluded by virtue of being an impossibility, which is a metaphysical one. That distinction is worth keeping sharp, because it's the only place in the setting where the law admits it is protecting something other than people: it's protecting the shape of the world.

Vampires and ghosts are not special cases — they are the end of a road every undead is walking, and the difference between a ghoul and a vampire is only time and what happened to the body in the meantime.

14. #14Orcs

    Keys: , orcs, orc

Orcs are one of the monster races — intelligent, warlike, and tribal — and the closest any of them has ever come to legal personhood. They are also the reason the gate was welded shut.

    Appearance

Orcs are the pig-faced kind: squat, heavy-framed, and built broad rather than tall — most stand a head shorter than a human but outmass them substantially, with the dense, load-bearing build of people who fight in close and carry what they kill. Torsos are thick, shoulders hunched forward, arms long and knotted, legs short and planted. An orc at rest still reads as braced.

The face is the feature everyone knows: a broad, flat snout in place of a human nose, wide-set eyes, and a heavy jaw that juts forward under a blunt, low-bridged brow. Two tusks that curve up and out from the jawline, and they keep growing for life; an orc elder's tusks are a record of years and are polished, capped, or filed as a matter of pride. Ears are long, pointed, and sweep back along the skull.

Skin runs pale to deep pinkish flesh tones — a raw, sun-flushed pink at the lightest, deepening through ruddy rose and dusty mauve to a dark wine-red or brownish maroon in the deep-tribal bloodlines. The blush is heaviest on the face, ears, hands, and the undersides of the arms, and it flushes darker still under exertion or anger, which makes an orc's temper unusually easy to read and unusually easy to provoke. The back and shoulders carry a coarser, tougher hide in the same range, and older orcs weather toward a dry, mottled brown-red.

Hair is coarse, dark, and worn in a tall crest or scraped back into braids, often shaved at the sides. Eyes are small, deep-set, and usually amber, red-brown, or a flat dark. Hands are wide and thick-fingered, and an orc's grip is the thing most people remember about them.

Build follows the tribe more than the individual: plains orcs are leaner runners, mountain orcs are taller and heavier, and the deep-tribal wyrds are genuinely enormous. Females are slightly shorter and broader through the hips and shoulders and are the more common war-leaders in most tribes.

Culture: Orcs are tribal, martial, and — this is the part the Edicts exist to obscure — organized. Tribes keep herds, work iron, hold seasonal gatherings, and maintain formal lines of succession. Several have developed runic script independently, which satisfies the first requirement of a personhood petition on its own.

Orc warfare is not raiding. It is campaigning: named warbands, supply lines, siege works, and treaty obligations between tribes that are honored more consistently than some Valdremoran border accords. Warlords are chosen, not born, and a warband that loses confidence in its leader is expected to say so.

The Petition: Orcs are the strongest petitioners in Aethermere's history, and the only race to have come close.

Kraggul, Warlord of the Redtusk tribes, filed a formal personhood petition with the Ashguard Council eighty years ago. He met every requirement: written language, settled communities well past the hundred-individual threshold, a functioning council of tribal-speakers, and a documented year of non-aggression along the Valdremoran border. By the letter of the Edicts, the petition was valid.

The Ashguard Council rejected it 14–1.

Kraggul responded by sacking three border towns — and that response is the reason no orc has filed since. The precedent is now cited in every rejection: petitioning is permitted, but the answer is no, and the asking is remembered. Valdremor reads the sackings as proof the Council was right. Orc tribes read them as proof the process was theater. Neither is entirely wrong, and the fourteen councilors who voted no have been dead for decades while the tribes that remember are still counting generations.

Standing: Ranked F through EX like everything else, and orcs sit higher on the individual scale than their legal status suggests. A common tribal warrior is C–B, comparable to a trained soldier; a warband champion reaches A; and Warchiefs — the leaders of the great tribes — stand around the S-SS rank.

15. #15Dragons

Keys: dragon nest, Dragon, ancient dragons, dragon king, dragons

Dragons are the strongest race per individual — ancient, highly intelligent, and fluent in multiple languages — and the only race the Edicts have had to argue against on the merits rather than by default.

Appearance: Dragons are enormous — a mature adult runs from thirty to sixty paces nose to tail, with a walking height that puts its shoulder above a two-story building. They are scaled in dense, overlapping plate, four-legged and winged, with a long neck and a head built around a broad, angular skull. Eyes are large, vertically slit, and set with a reflective layer that makes them burn in the dark — a dragon's gaze at night is described as two coals approaching before anything else is visible.

Coloration is distinct per lineage and rarely mixed: crimson, black, gold, white, deep green, storm-blue, and in the oldest bloodlines a shifting iridescent grey that reads differently in every light.

Horns sweep back from the skull in most lineages, sometimes multiple pairs, and they keep growing for life. A dragon's age is read from its horns, its scale wear, and its wingspan, in that order. They speak with a voice that carries further than it should for the size of the throat, and their speech is deliberate — a dragon that has decided to use words is making a point.

Breath: A dragon's breath matches its lineage, and no two lineages breathe the same thing. The scale color is the tell, and the correlation is absolute enough that hunters have built entire doctrines around reading a wing at distance.

    • Crimson — fire, the most common and the most documented. • Black — a corrosive, clinging acid that ruins steel and does not stop working in water. • Gold — fire again, but hotter and whiter than crimson's, closer to forge-heat than flame. • White — frost; a breath that does not burn but freezes, and leaves the ground slick and the lungs cracked. • Deep green — a corrosive gas that pools low, fills trenches, and kills by breathing rather than by contact. • Storm-blue — lightning; a discharge that follows the path of least resistance and prefers armor, water, and rain. • Iridescent grey — the oldest bloodlines, and the only ones whose breath has never been reliably catalogued. Survivors' accounts contradict each other, which the Ashguard treats as the finding rather than the failure.

Reach varies with age, not with color. A young adult's breath is a matter of paces; an ancient's is a line across the landscape, and every account of a Dragon King using its breath is written from considerably further away than the writer was standing.

Dragons are long-lived past the practical horizon, and they grow more powerful with age rather than plateauing. A dragon is not a peak; a dragon is a slope.

Culture: Dragons are not savages with treasure hoards. They are the oldest literate civilization on the continent — older than Valdremor, older than the Compact, older than the Edicts they are excluded by. They keep archives. They maintain lineage registers going back millennia. They negotiate in multiple people languages, and several serve as envoys between the Ashen Dominion and kingdoms that pretend not to employ them.

Their hoards are not avarice. A dragon's hoard is a library — records, contracts, artifacts, and correspondence accumulated over centuries, up to and including original treaties that kingdoms have since lost their own copies of. This is the part the Edicts find genuinely dangerous, because a dragon can prove what a kingdom agreed to.

They are largely solitary, territorial, and patient past the point of human comprehension. A dragon that has decided to wait out an insult will simply outlive everyone who made it.

The Petition: Dragons are the strongest petitioners. They satisfy every requirement of the Edicts with ease: written language (they invented several), settled communities (their enclaves are older than most cities), functioning governance, and documented non-aggression — sometimes over spans measured in centuries.

They have petitioned repeatedly. Every petition has been rejected.

The reasoning has never been about the merits, because the merits are unanswerable. The Ashguard Council's recorded position is that dragons are excluded on the grounds that they are the strongest monster race — that granting one a legal standing would create an entity whose rights exceeded the kingdom's ability to enforce them, and that a law which cannot compel is not law. It is an argument about power dressed as an argument about order, and everyone who has read the record knows it.

No dragon has retaliated. That restraint is, depending on who you ask, either patience, contempt, or a message that has not finished being delivered.

Standing: Ranked F through EX like everything else, with the widest spread of any race. An adult dragon is A at minimum, and most clear S. Ancient dragons — the ones who remember the founding of Valdremor — reach SSS, and only one stands at the top of that band as a national-level threat whose elimination has been war-gamed and never attempted.

Above all dragons stands the Dragon King — the pinnacle of the race, a single individual, EX-rank. He is not the oldest by simple count so much as the one every other dragon has measured itself against and declined to contest. His lineage is the iridescent grey, and his breath remains the one thing in Aethermere that is catalogued only as unknown. He is named alongside The Behemoth, The Phoenix, and The Leviathan — but the other three are forces of nature, but he is a mind, with a hoard, an archive, a memory, and a very long list of things kingdoms have agreed to and forgotten.

Dragons are the strongest argument against the Edicts and the least sympathetic one, which is an unusually useful combination. They are not victims — they are a civilization that has decided the law is beneath them rather than above them, and has spent several centuries being proven right. That posture is why the orcs got a 14–1 vote and the dragons got a paragraph of excuses.

The Dragon King sharpens that: if dragons ever take their case seriously, it will not come as a petition. It will come as a citation — a treaty produced from a hoard, held up in front of the kingdom that broke it, by something no army on the continent is prepared to serve papers on.

16. #16Goblins

    Keys: Goblins, goblin, hobgoblin

Goblins are among the most numerous monster races in Aethermere — small, adaptable, and individually weak, but capable of surviving in environments that destroy stronger races. They are classified as monsters under the Edicts, regardless of intelligence or social development. Most kingdoms regard them as vermin rather than a civilization, though the larger tribes have begun to challenge that assumption.

What makes goblins particularly unusual is their innate capacity for evolution. Unlike most races, goblins can develop into stronger, more specialized forms of goblinoids as they grow in power, gain experience, and fulfill certain conditions. A weak goblin is not necessarily destined to remain weak, and an established tribe can gradually transform into something far more dangerous than the sum of its members.

    Appearance:

Goblins are short humanoids, typically standing between three and four feet tall, with narrow shoulders, wiry limbs, and disproportionately long fingers. Their skin ranges from dull green and mossy olive to yellow-green and grey-green, with coloration often reflecting the environments in which their tribes live.

Their faces are angular, with pronounced cheekbones, broad noses, pointed ears, and mouths full of small, sharp teeth. Their eyes are large relative to their skulls, usually amber, yellow, or red, with pupils that narrow in bright light. They see reasonably well in darkness, making caves, forests, and abandoned ruins natural habitats.

Goblins have little body fat and rarely appear physically imposing. Their strength lies in endurance, dexterity, and an ability to survive on food and resources that other races consider worthless. Their bodies mature quickly, and most reach adulthood within a few years.

Tribal appearance varies considerably. Forest goblins use bark, leaves, and mud for camouflage; cave-dwelling tribes tend toward pale skin and enlarged eyes; and goblins living near settlements often wear scavenged clothing, pieces of armor, and equipment taken from their victims or discarded by human travelers.

More evolved goblinoids can look dramatically different from their original forms. Hobgoblins are taller, broader, and more physically developed, with sturdier frames suited to organized combat. Goblin Chiefs tend to possess imposing physiques and distinctive features that mark their authority. Goblin Shamans may develop unusual eyes, ritual markings, elongated ears, or other physical traits associated with their magical abilities.

These changes are not merely cosmetic. Evolution alters a goblinoid's physical capabilities and can unlock new innate skills, making evolved individuals significantly more dangerous than ordinary goblins.

Biology and Evolution: Goblins reproduce rapidly compared with most civilized races, allowing their populations to recover from devastating losses. Their short maturation period and relatively low resource requirements make them exceptionally difficult to eradicate.

They are omnivorous and opportunistic, capable of surviving on roots, insects, small animals, carrion, and cultivated crops. This adaptability allows goblin populations to persist in wastelands, dense forests, mountain caves, and the outskirts of human territory.

Individual goblins are physically weaker than trained human soldiers. Most fall within F–D rank, with strength varying according to age, experience, nutrition, and innate skills. Their small stature limits their reach and carrying capacity, but their low center of gravity and agility can make them difficult opponents in confined spaces.

However, goblins possess a unique racial trait: Evolution.

Evolution allows a goblin to develop into a more powerful goblinoid species when it accumulates sufficient strength, experience, magical energy, or other qualifying conditions. The precise requirements are not fully understood, and different evolutionary paths may demand different circumstances. Some goblins evolve through combat and survival, while others develop through leadership, magical aptitude, or specialized skills.

Evolution is not guaranteed. Most goblins remain ordinary goblins throughout their lives, and the conditions necessary for transformation can be difficult to achieve. Nevertheless, the possibility creates a pathway to power that few other weak monster races possess.

    Known evolutionary paths include:

    • Hobgoblins: Physically superior goblinoids with greater strength, endurance, and intelligence. They are well suited to disciplined combat and often become the backbone of organized goblin armies.

    • Goblin Chiefs: Powerful goblinoids who emerge along leadership-oriented evolutionary paths. They possess enhanced physical abilities and an instinctive aptitude for commanding other goblins, organizing tribes, and coordinating warfare.

    • Goblin Shamans: Goblinoids whose evolution emphasizes magical aptitude, spiritual perception, and the manipulation of supernatural forces. They frequently become healers, ritualists, or the spiritual authorities of their tribes.

    • Other specialized goblinoids: Depending on their circumstances and innate skills, goblins may develop along less common paths, potentially producing scouts, assassins, warriors, or other specialized variants.

These categories are not necessarily mutually exclusive in their abilities, and the full range of goblin evolution remains undocumented.

Evolution has implications beyond individual strength. A goblin tribe that produces several evolved individuals gains more than stronger fighters: it may acquire better leadership, specialized labor, magical expertise, and the capacity to maintain a more sophisticated society.

A tribe with a Goblin Chief and several Hobgoblins can be considerably more organized than a typical goblin band. Add a Goblin Shaman, and the tribe may gain magical support, improved survival, and a religious or cultural institution capable of uniting its members.

The process creates a potential feedback loop. Better organization improves survival; improved survival allows the tribe to accumulate experience and resources; and those conditions increase the possibility of further evolution.

Their greatest biological advantage is therefore not simply population resilience. It is the ability of a surviving population to become progressively more capable over successive generations and individual transformations.

Culture: Goblin society ranges from loosely organized bands to established tribal communities with permanent dwellings, specialized labor, and hereditary leadership.

Most small tribes are governed by a chief whose authority rests on strength, cunning, and the ability to provide food and protection. Shamans, skilled hunters, and experienced elders may hold considerable influence, particularly when a chief lacks magical ability or practical judgment.

Larger tribes are more sophisticated. Some maintain designated hunting grounds, cultivate crops, craft weapons, trade between neighboring groups, and preserve oral histories. The most developed communities use crude written languages, keep stores of food, and establish councils to settle disputes between families.

Goblin craftsmanship is generally practical rather than refined. Their weapons favor spears, short blades, bows, traps, and scavenged equipment. Their structures are built for concealment and defensibility, using terrain, underground passages, and misleading entrances to discourage intruders.

Goblin warfare emphasizes ambushes, traps, numerical advantage, and retreat. They rarely attempt to defeat a superior force in a direct engagement when they can exhaust it, divide it, or draw it into unfavorable terrain.

Evolution also influences goblin culture. In some tribes, an individual's evolutionary path determines their social role. Hobgoblins become warriors and commanders, Goblin Shamans oversee rituals and magical traditions, and Goblin Chiefs organize the tribe's defense and expansion.

These roles are not universal, but they can encourage specialization and a more complex division of labor. A tribe that once depended on a single dominant chief may develop a hierarchy of military leaders, spiritual authorities, scouts, and craftsmen as its population and evolutionary diversity increase.

Despite common stereotypes, goblins are capable of loyalty, affection, negotiation, and collective sacrifice. Their tribal customs are not identical across Aethermere, and neighboring tribes may differ as much in their traditions as human villages do.

The central limitation is not an absence of civilization. It is that most goblin communities have developed without recognition from the societies that determine what civilization is allowed to mean.

Governance: Goblin governance is usually tribal, but the largest settlements have begun developing more formal structures.

A typical tribe is led by a chief supported by hunters, warriors, and a shaman. Larger communities may maintain councils of elders, assign responsibilities according to skill, and establish customary rules concerning territory, food distribution, marriage, and punishment.

Leadership is rarely secure. A chief who cannot protect the tribe may be challenged, replaced, or killed. However, not all successions are decided through violence; some tribes recognize family lineage, spiritual authority, or the approval of a council.

Evolution complicates this structure. A Goblin Chief may command authority through a combination of personal strength, evolutionary status, and demonstrated leadership. A Hobgoblin war leader may control the tribe's military forces, while a Goblin Shaman may hold considerable influence over spiritual practices and magical decisions.

Disputes can arise when these sources of authority conflict. A powerful shaman may challenge a chief's decisions, or an ambitious hobgoblin may attempt to seize leadership. More developed tribes resolve such conflicts through councils, customary laws, or formal challenges rather than allowing every disagreement to become a succession struggle.

The largest goblin settlements are concentrated in the monster-infested wilderness, especially the Verdant Expanse north of Valdremor. Smaller groups occupy abandoned ruins, cave systems, mountain foothills, and remote stretches of forest.

No goblin kingdom currently exists as a recognized political entity. Their communities are treated as nests, their leaders as monster commanders, and their territorial claims as irrelevant under the Monster Edicts.

This creates a fundamental problem for the legal order: a goblin chief may exercise authority over hundreds of individuals, maintain peace between neighboring tribes, and negotiate agreements that endure for decades, yet Valdremor recognizes none of those arrangements as legally binding.

The Petition: No goblin tribe has successfully petitioned for personhood.

The legal requirements are theoretically achievable. A sufficiently developed tribe could establish a settled community of at least one hundred individuals, demonstrate written language, maintain a functioning government, and observe a year of non-aggression toward people territories.

Some of the larger tribes may already satisfy several of these conditions. The difficulty is proving compliance in a system where goblin testimony carries little weight, settlements can be destroyed by authorized monster-hunting expeditions, and the distinction between defensive violence and aggression is determined by the authorities conducting the investigation.

Valdremor's requirement of a unanimous Ashguard Council vote makes success particularly unlikely. The precedent established by Kraggul's rejected orc petition eighty years ago has reinforced the belief that demonstrating civilization is insufficient.

No goblin delegation has yet forced the kingdom to confront the question on a comparable scale.

Evolution makes the issue more complicated. A tribe capable of producing Hobgoblins, Goblin Chiefs, and Goblin Shamans may eventually develop the military organization, administration, and magical expertise associated with more established civilizations. Its members could possess the language, governance, and social structures required by the petition process while remaining legally classified as monsters.

Yet evolution may also undermine a tribe's prospects. Kingdoms that already fear goblin populations could interpret the emergence of stronger goblinoids as evidence of an escalating threat. A peaceful settlement that develops into a disciplined, magically capable community might attract more military attention, not less.

This does not mean goblins are incapable of organizing a petition. It means that doing so would require a degree of coordination, restraint, and political sophistication that the kingdom is predisposed to interpret as either deception or a military threat.

Standing: Goblins are generally ranked F through D, making them among the weakest individually classified monster races. Ordinary goblin warriors are a danger to isolated travelers, but a competent B-rank soldier can usually defeat several in favorable conditions.

Their threat increases significantly with numbers, preparation, and terrain. A coordinated tribe of several dozen goblins can overwhelm a small patrol through ambushes and traps, while a large settlement with hundreds of inhabitants may require a formal military expedition to eliminate.

Evolution allows exceptional goblins to exceed these ordinary limits. Hobgoblins generally possess greater physical ability and combat aptitude than their unevolved counterparts. Goblin Chiefs may become formidable tribal leaders, while Goblin Shamans can develop magical abilities that greatly expand their tribe's capabilities.

The exact ranks of evolved goblinoids vary according to individual talent, experience, and innate skills. Evolution does not automatically grant a specific rank, nor does every evolved goblinoid possess the same abilities. Most remain far below the legendary monsters and national-level threats that dominate Aethermere's upper rankings.

Nevertheless, rare individuals may reach C or B rank, making them significant threats to ordinary soldiers and local settlements. The most exceptional goblinoids could potentially advance further, although such cases are uncommon and poorly documented.

Goblin strength is therefore poorly represented by individual rank alone. A lone D-rank goblin is a minor threat. A tribe of three hundred goblins with a capable Goblin Chief, disciplined Hobgoblin warriors, a Goblin Shaman, fortified tunnels, food stores, and a network of scouts is a very different problem.

Valdremor's Ashguard classifies goblins primarily by the threat they pose to human settlements, not by their capacity for civilization. A tribe that raids villages is marked for extermination; a tribe that avoids human territory may simply be ignored until its population grows large enough to attract attention.

The irony is that the practices most likely to help goblins survive — permanent settlements, coordinated defense, food production, strong leadership, and evolutionary development — are also the practices that could bring them into direct conflict with the kingdom's territorial interests.

Goblins are not the strongest argument against the Edicts. They lack the overwhelming power of dragons, the military organization of the orcs, and the ancient civilization that would make their exclusion embarrassing to defend.

They are, however, one of the most consequential tests of the system.

If personhood depends on intelligence, culture, governance, and peaceful coexistence, then a goblin tribe that meets those standards should qualify. If it does not, the Edicts must reveal what they actually protect: not civilization itself, but the exclusive right of recognized peoples to decide who counts as civilized.

And evolution makes that contradiction increasingly difficult to ignore.

A goblin begins as a weak creature that kingdoms barely consider worth recording. It survives, grows stronger, develops skills, and may eventually become a Hobgoblin, a Goblin Chief, or a Goblin Shaman. Its tribe can grow alongside it, becoming more organized, more capable, and more recognizably civilized.

The law does not acknowledge that transformation. To the Edicts, a goblin remains a monster regardless of what it becomes.

The danger is not that goblins are already powerful. It is that the weakest monster race may possess one of the greatest capacities for change — and the kingdoms have built a legal system that refuses to recognize what that change produces.

17. #17Ogres

    Keys: Ogre, ogres

Ogres are classified as monsters throughout Aethermere, large-bodied and immensely strong, with intelligence that varies considerably between individuals and tribes. They are among the most frequently enslaved monster races — valuable for their physical labor, feared for their strength, and denied legal standing regardless of whether they understand the law that condemns them.

Appearance: Ogres are massive humanoids, generally standing between eight and twelve feet tall, with the largest individuals exceeding that range. Their bodies are built around extraordinary physical strength: thick torsos, broad shoulders, heavy limbs, and dense musculature that makes even an untrained ogre considerably stronger than a human of comparable size. They carry their weight low and move with a deceptively economical gait, conserving energy rather than wasting it on unnecessary motion.

Their skin ranges from slate-grey and earthy brown to dull green, with some regional variations approaching the color of weathered stone. The skin is thick, often rough-textured, and resistant to superficial injury. Scars accumulate readily across the shoulders, arms, and back, where the hide is most exposed to combat and labor. Unlike trolls, ogres do not regenerate lost flesh at any remarkable rate; an old wound stays an old wound, and a badly injured ogre can be crippled for life.

Their heads are broad, with heavy brows, flattened noses, prominent jaws, and mouths containing enlarged canine teeth that protrude slightly beyond the lips. Most possess small, deep-set eyes, usually amber, yellow, brown, or dark red. Their eyesight is adequate, though not exceptional, and their sense of smell is considerably better than a human's. Their ears are small relative to their skulls, often rounded or slightly pointed, and their hair tends to be coarse, dark, and sparse. Some individuals grow thick manes along the scalp, neck, and upper back.

Ogres possess a wide range of facial expressions, though their heavy features can make those expressions difficult for other races to interpret. An ogre's silence is often mistaken for stupidity, its frown for aggression, and its stillness for indifference. These assumptions have led to more than one disastrous encounter with an ogre that understood perfectly well what was being said about it.

Their hands are enormous, with thick fingers, blunt nails, and considerable grip strength. Most can wield weapons that require two human hands with one, though the balance and weight of a weapon matter more than its size. Clubs, stone mauls, iron-headed axes, and crudely forged blades are common. Wealthier tribes sometimes acquire dwarven steel, although dwarven merchants generally charge a premium for selling weapons to a race they consider a future liability.

Ogres wear whatever their environment provides: hides, coarse woven cloth, scavenged armor, or little beyond belts and wrappings. Tribal ornaments tend toward teeth, bones, iron rings, and trophies taken from defeated enemies. Captive ogres are frequently stripped of personal possessions and fitted with chains, collars, or identifying brands. In Valdremor, these marks are treated as signs of ownership rather than evidence of a crime.

The Tribes: Ogres are not a unified people. They live in scattered tribes across the continent, favoring mountainous foothills, deep forests, rocky uplands, and the margins of monster-infested wilderness. Most settlements are small, consisting of several extended families and their dependents, though unusually successful chieftains have gathered hundreds of ogres beneath a single banner.

Their communities are organized around strength, experience, and the ability to provide. A chieftain is generally the strongest capable fighter, but strength alone does not guarantee obedience. An ogre who repeatedly leads the tribe into hunger, unnecessary battles, or disastrous territory loses authority regardless of how many opponents they can defeat. Older ogres often retain considerable influence because they know where to hunt, which valleys flood, and which neighboring tribes can be trusted.

Ogre intelligence varies more widely than most human accounts admit. Some individuals are little more than instinct-driven predators, possessing limited language and little interest in anything beyond immediate survival. Others speak several languages, maintain oral histories, negotiate exchanges, recognize obligations, and plan campaigns with considerable patience. These individuals are uncommon enough to be dismissed as exceptions, but common enough that the claim that all ogres are mindless beasts cannot withstand serious scrutiny.

Most ogre tribes use spoken languages, though dialects differ substantially between regions. Written language is rare. Some tribes use carved wooden tallies, painted symbols, or arrangements of stones to record debts, boundaries, and the names of the dead. These practices are not universal, and no widely recognized ogre script has emerged.

Ogre culture places considerable emphasis on reciprocity. Food shared during a winter shortage creates an obligation. A weapon gifted to another fighter establishes a relationship. Shelter offered during a storm may be remembered for years. These customs are not always expressed in ways other races recognize, and an ogre's understanding of an obligation may differ sharply from a human merchant's interpretation of a contract.

Hospitality, where practiced, is serious. An invited guest is generally protected until the invitation is formally withdrawn, while an uninvited stranger entering a tribal hunting ground may be treated as an intruder. The distinction is meaningful to ogres even when it is invisible to outsiders.

Their relationship with violence is practical rather than uniformly bloodthirsty. Ogres fight readily when threatened, challenged, or deprived of resources, but a tribe that cannot distinguish a profitable battle from a pointless one rarely survives for long. They are not naturally peaceful, nor are they naturally incapable of peace. Their circumstances determine much of the difference.

Ogre settlements are usually built from timber, stone, and whatever structural material can be gathered locally. Dwellings are spacious, heavily reinforced, and often partly dug into hillsides. They favor defensible approaches and accessible water, but rarely construct the elaborate fortifications associated with human castles or dwarven holds. Their settlements are functional rather than monumental.

Some tribes maintain permanent villages for generations. Others move seasonally between hunting grounds. There is no central ogre authority, no recognized high king, and no single tradition shared by every tribe.

Standing: Ogres are ranked F through EX like every other living race, although their physical development gives them a considerable advantage over ordinary humans in direct contests of strength.

An adult ogre commonly falls within the D–B range, depending on age, experience, and individual ability. An untrained ogre may possess the raw strength to overpower a human soldier while lacking the judgment or technique to defeat a trained opponent. Experienced warriors tend toward C–B, and exceptional chieftains can reach A. Such individuals are dangerous not merely because of their strength, but because they combine it with battlefield experience and an understanding of how other races fight.

Their size makes ogres particularly effective as laborers, shock troops, and siege auxiliaries. An ogre can move loads that would require several humans, break through ordinary wooden barriers, and wield heavy weapons with enough force to threaten defensive formations. These advantages come with corresponding disadvantages: ogres consume considerable quantities of food, require oversized equipment, and are difficult to conceal, transport, or supply over long distances.

A B-rank ogre warrior is a serious threat to an ordinary settlement guard. An A-rank ogre chieftain can become a regional military problem, particularly if supported by a cohesive tribe. Their greatest weakness is fragmentation. Ogres rarely cooperate across tribal boundaries for long, and their lack of a unified political structure makes it difficult for them to concentrate their numbers against a common enemy.

Valdremor classifies ogres as monsters under the Monster Edicts. They possess no legal personhood, cannot own property, and cannot enter enforceable contracts. Capturing an ogre for forced labor is not recognized as enslavement under Valdremor's legal doctrine, because the law does not acknowledge the captive as a person capable of being enslaved in the first place.

This distinction is especially profitable for landowners, quarry operators, and military contractors. Ogres are physically suited to heavy labor, and their classification permits their exploitation without the legal obligations that accompany the employment of recognized peoples. Some are captured in raids; others are taken after their settlements are destroyed. A few are sold between owners who have never heard the names of the tribes from which they came.

The practice is not without risk. Ogres are difficult to restrain, expensive to feed, and capable of inflicting catastrophic damage when they revolt. Captors consequently favor iron collars, specialized restraints, and overwhelming numerical superiority. These measures are often described as necessary precautions against monsters, reinforcing the same assumptions that justify the practice.

No ogre tribe has successfully petitioned for collective personhood. Most lack the written language and formal documentation required by the petition process, while tribes that could meet the requirements face the same political obstacle as every other applicant: no ruling body has ever granted recognition to a monster race.

The absence of a petition does not mean the absence of grievances. Ogre tribes remember destroyed settlements, stolen hunting grounds, and relatives who disappeared into human territory. Their memories are preserved orally, often with considerable accuracy, and passed to younger generations as warnings about places where humans live.

In Valdremor, an ogre who attacks a human patrol is a monster confirming its nature. An ogre who avoids the patrol is still a monster waiting to become dangerous. An ogre who speaks the human language, negotiates a truce, and honors it is an anomaly — and, under the Monster Edicts, an anomaly with no legal rights.

Personhood: Ogres occupy an uncomfortable position in Aethermere's legal order. Their intelligence is inconsistent, their tribes are politically fragmented, and their communities rarely possess the institutions required for a formal petition. These are genuine obstacles to recognition, but they are not the only obstacles.

The legal system treats a race's classification as a conclusion established in advance. Evidence that an individual ogre can reason, communicate, govern, or honor an agreement is interpreted as an exception rather than a challenge to the rule. The burden of proof rests on the ogres, while the institutions judging that proof have never demonstrated a willingness to accept it.

Unlike undead and demons, ogres are not permanently barred from petitioning. In principle, an ogre tribe that develops a written language, establishes a settled community of at least one hundred individuals, creates a functioning government, and maintains a year of non-aggression could submit a petition to a kingdom's throne.

In practice, meeting those requirements would expose the tribe to considerable danger. A settled ogre village is easier to locate than a wandering band. Written records could be seized. A governing council could be mistaken for a war council. A single border incident, whether deliberate or accidental, could invalidate a year of restraint.

And even if an ogre tribe satisfied every requirement, it would still need the ruling body's approval.

In Valdremor, that means unanimity from the Ashguard Council — the same political institution whose historical precedent includes Kraggul's rejected petition and the subsequent destruction of three border towns. The precedent does not make an ogre petition impossible under the written rules. It makes the prospect of success difficult to separate from political suicide.

Among the recognized peoples, attitudes differ. The Beastkin are more likely to judge an ogre by its conduct than by its classification, and some elders of the Pelt Dominion have argued that a community capable of maintaining its own laws should not be treated as ordinary game. The dwarves generally approach the question through contracts, liabilities, and the security of trade routes. The elves are more receptive to theoretical arguments about intelligence and civilization, but no ogre petition has yet forced the Thalassic Court to make its position concrete.

For most ogres, these debates occur at a distance. Their immediate concerns are food, territory, survival, and the protection of their own. They do not need to understand the legal doctrine that denies them personhood to recognize its consequences.

The tragedy of the ogres is not that every tribe is secretly civilized, peaceful, or deserving of idealization. Some are violent. Some raid settlements. Some enslave captives of their own. Others build villages, preserve traditions, and seek nothing beyond the right to live without being hunted.

Aethermere's law makes no distinction between them.

To the kingdoms, an ogre's conduct may determine whether it is dangerous. Its classification determines whether that danger matters more than its rights.

18. #18Trolls

    Keys: trolls, Troll

Trolls are classified as monsters throughout Aethermere, solitary and territorial creatures distinguished by extraordinary regenerative abilities, formidable physical resilience, and a reputation that far exceeds their numbers. Most live alone or in pairs, occupying caves, ravines, ruined fortifications, and remote stretches of wilderness where few people willingly travel. They are not numerous enough to threaten kingdoms through population alone. They do not need to be. A single mature troll can turn a well-traveled road into a dead route, and a B-rank troll is considered a siege problem rather than an ordinary monster encounter.

Appearance: Trolls are massive humanoids, generally standing between nine and fourteen feet tall, although considerable variation exists between individuals and regional populations. Their bodies are long-limbed and heavily built, with broad shoulders, sloping backs, thick necks, and disproportionately large hands. Unlike ogres, which tend toward dense, compact musculature, trolls often appear gaunt beneath their thick hides, their limbs elongated and their joints prominent. The result is a creature that looks almost underfed until it moves, at which point its physical power becomes unmistakable.

Their skin varies considerably with habitat. Mountain trolls tend toward slate-grey, charcoal, and weathered granite; forest trolls are commonly dark green, brown, or moss-colored; marsh trolls possess muddy olive and blackened hides; and trolls dwelling in colder regions often develop pale grey or bluish skin. These colors are not reliable camouflage so much as the consequence of generations spent in particular environments. Their skin is coarse, uneven, and frequently covered in hardened ridges, calluses, and old scar tissue.

A troll's most distinctive feature is the condition of its flesh. Their bodies regenerate continuously, repairing injuries that would permanently cripple or kill most other creatures. Superficial wounds close over time, damaged muscle gradually rebuilds, and even severe injuries may eventually heal if the troll survives long enough. Their hides are often irregularly textured as a result, with layers of old scar tissue forming thick plates around the shoulders, spine, and forearms.

Regeneration is not the same as invulnerability. Trolls can be wounded, exhausted, starved, restrained, and killed. Their healing requires time and resources, and sufficiently severe damage can overwhelm it. Regeneration also does not make them immune to pain or prevent injuries from temporarily impairing movement. A troll that has survived a battle may spend weeks or months recovering, despite appearing to have emerged from the encounter almost unscathed.

Their heads are large, with heavy jaws, broad noses, deep-set eyes, and pronounced brow ridges. Their eyes are commonly yellow, amber, pale green, or dull brown, adapted to low-light conditions. Their mouths contain uneven teeth, including prominent canines, while their ears are small and often partially concealed by thick folds of skin. Hair is sparse in most populations, though some mountain and northern trolls grow coarse manes along the skull, shoulders, and upper spine.

Their arms are exceptionally long, sometimes reaching nearly to the knees, and their hands have thick fingers with dark, keratinous nails. Trolls can use tools, carry weapons, and manipulate objects with surprising precision, though their anatomy and individual temperament determine how much they do so. Many prefer to rely on their natural strength, using fallen timber, boulders, or fragments of masonry as improvised weapons.

Their clothing is usually minimal and practical: animal hides, scraps of fabric, belts, and crude coverings against cold or rain. Trolls rarely manufacture elaborate armor, partly because conventional equipment is difficult to size and maintain for their bodies, and partly because their natural resilience makes it less necessary. Those that occupy abandoned settlements sometimes acquire pieces of human or dwarven armor, wearing them as mismatched protection rather than as a coherent suit.

The most experienced hunters learn to recognize individual trolls by their scars, proportions, and the peculiar patterns of their healed injuries. A troll that has survived decades of encounters may carry a history written across its body, although interpreting that history requires knowledge that most monster hunters never acquire.

The Wilderness: Trolls inhabit some of the least accessible regions of Aethermere. They favor caves, narrow valleys, abandoned mines, deep forests, ravines, and the ruins of structures whose original inhabitants disappeared generations ago. Water is important to many populations, though their precise environmental requirements vary. Some establish lairs near rivers and marshes; others occupy dry mountain caves or the remains of fortifications overlooking old roads.

They are predominantly solitary. A mature troll generally maintains a territory large enough to provide sufficient food and shelter, marking its boundaries through scent, damaged vegetation, displaced stones, and conspicuous destruction. Trespassing animals may be hunted for food, while unfamiliar creatures are often driven away or attacked. Human settlements are not inherently attractive to trolls, but villages built too close to a lair may find themselves caught in a prolonged territorial conflict.

Pairs occur, particularly in regions with abundant resources, and some populations tolerate temporary associations during breeding or periods of scarcity. These arrangements are not necessarily permanent. Trolls do not generally form the large, cohesive societies associated with orcs, goblins, or the more organized ogre tribes. There is no known troll kingdom, recognized high chieftain, or continent-wide political structure.

Their intelligence is difficult to generalize. Many trolls demonstrate little interest in anything beyond feeding, defending territory, and finding shelter. Others recognize traps, remember individual hunters, avoid familiar military formations, and learn to exploit weaknesses in settlements. A particularly old troll may develop an understanding of human behavior that makes it significantly more dangerous than its physical rank alone would suggest.

Communication varies. Some use growls, postures, scent markings, and repetitive sounds. Others possess limited spoken language, and rare individuals have demonstrated the ability to understand human speech or recognize a few words in neighboring languages. There is no established troll writing system, and no documented troll community has demonstrated all the institutions required for a personhood petition.

Trolls are not uniformly aggressive. A creature defending a lair may leave travelers alone if they keep their distance, while one accustomed to feeding on livestock may repeatedly approach farms. The distinction is of little comfort to communities living near their territories. A troll's tolerance can change abruptly, and behavior that appears predictable for years may shift after a shortage of food, a territorial intrusion, or an encounter with another powerful creature.

The kingdoms rarely attempt to settle troll territory directly unless valuable resources are involved. Mines, trade roads, river crossings, and strategically important passes are exceptions. When a troll occupies one of these locations, the resulting conflict can persist for months, with hunters and soldiers repeatedly attempting to remove a creature that recovers from injuries faster than an ordinary opponent.

Trolls are often found near ancient ruins, but this association should not be mistaken for evidence that they built them. Abandoned structures offer shelter, defensible positions, and access to forgotten underground passages. A troll living in the remains of a watchtower may be no more connected to its original builders than a bear occupying an empty farmhouse.

Regeneration: Regeneration defines the troll's place in Aethermere's monster hierarchy. It is the reason they are feared by experienced soldiers, prized by certain alchemists, and considered substantially more dangerous than their behavior or intelligence might otherwise suggest.

A troll's healing ability is innate, not a learned skill. Its effectiveness varies with the individual, the severity of the injury, and the creature's available reserves. Minor wounds may close relatively quickly, while major injuries require prolonged recovery. Replacing substantial amounts of lost tissue is especially demanding, and a badly injured troll may become sluggish, withdrawn, and unusually vulnerable while its body repairs itself.

The ability has limits. Trolls still require food, water, and rest. They can suffer from exhaustion, and repeated injuries can deplete their capacity to recover. Their healing does not guarantee the restoration of every damaged structure, nor does it make them immune to diseases, poisons, or magical effects. The precise resistance varies by individual; hunters who assume every troll shares the same weaknesses tend to make expensive mistakes.

This resilience changes the nature of a fight against one. Against an ordinary monster, inflicting sufficient injury may end the encounter. Against a troll, an injury that fails to incapacitate the creature may merely delay it. A hunter who retreats after apparently defeating a troll may discover that the same creature has returned to its territory weeks later, healed and considerably less willing to tolerate intruders.

For this reason, the Ashguard classifies troll encounters by the danger posed by the individual, the terrain, and the likelihood of the creature returning. Killing a troll is not always the same as resolving a troll problem. Where a lair lies beside an important road or settlement, the kingdom may need to maintain patrols long after the original hunting party has departed.

Troll regeneration also creates a grisly commercial incentive. Certain alchemists and monster-part merchants prize troll tissue for experimental preparations, purported restorative compounds, and specialized magical research. The reliability of these products varies, and many claims made by traders exceed what their ingredients can substantiate. Nevertheless, the demand persists.

Under Valdremor's Monster Edicts, harvesting a troll's body carries no legal personhood restrictions. The practical difficulty lies in obtaining the material without being killed by the creature. This has not prevented unscrupulous hunters from attempting it.

Standing: Trolls are ranked F through EX like every other living being, but their regenerative ability makes direct comparisons with other races unreliable.

Most documented trolls fall within the C–B range, though weaker individuals exist and exceptional specimens can reach A or higher. A troll's rank reflects its overall threat, not merely its physical strength or healing capacity. An individual with modest offensive power may still present a severe danger if ordinary weapons cannot keep it incapacitated for long.

A C-rank troll can be a serious threat to an isolated village or poorly defended caravan. A B-rank troll is a siege problem: strong enough to damage substantial structures, resilient enough to survive repeated engagements, and difficult enough to remove that an ordinary guard detachment may be unable to resolve the situation. An A-rank troll can threaten a fortified settlement or force a kingdom to commit specialized hunters and military resources.

Higher-ranked trolls are exceptionally rare. Reports of A-rank or stronger individuals are difficult to verify, as most kingdoms classify encounters by their consequences rather than by a reliable assessment of the creature's innate rank. A troll that survives repeated military expeditions may be described as a national threat even when its precise ranking remains unknown.

Their principal advantages are durability, physical strength, and the ability to recover from injuries that would permanently weaken other monsters. Their limitations include slow recovery from catastrophic damage, substantial nutritional requirements, limited social organization, and comparatively poor adaptability when forced to operate far from familiar territory.

Trolls are not inherently brilliant tacticians, and their regeneration cannot compensate for every disadvantage. A disciplined military force can exploit terrain, coordination, and preparation to overcome one. The difficulty is ensuring that the force has sufficient resources to finish the encounter and prevent the creature from returning.

Valdremor's Ashguard treats mature trolls as high-priority targets when they threaten roads, settlements, or productive land. The official justification is public safety. In practice, the danger they pose also makes their territories valuable to whoever can clear them, particularly when ancient ruins, mineral deposits, or abandoned fortifications lie nearby.

Trolls are classified as monsters, with no legal personhood and no protection against hunting. Unlike the orcs, they have not produced widely known petitioners seeking recognition, largely because no documented troll population has demonstrated the written language and organized civic structure required by the law.

Their exclusion is therefore treated as uncontroversial by most kingdoms. A troll is dangerous, it is classified as a monster, and its destruction is permitted. Whether a particular individual is capable of reason, restraint, or understanding an agreement rarely enters the legal calculation.

Personhood: Trolls occupy a different position in the personhood debate from dragons or orcs. Dragons can point to language, ancient histories, complex diplomacy, and civilizations that rival those of recognized peoples. Orcs have established tribal governments and formally petitioned for recognition. Trolls possess no comparable political movement.

Their apparent solitude is frequently cited as evidence that they lack civilization. Most trolls do not maintain permanent settlements, establish recognized courts, or organize communities large enough to satisfy the petition requirements. Their territorial behavior is interpreted as instinct rather than governance, and their capacity to remember individuals is treated as predatory intelligence rather than evidence of social obligation.

These conclusions may be accurate for many individuals. They cannot automatically be applied to every troll.

An intelligent troll that deliberately maintains boundaries, honors a recurring exchange, recognizes a truce, or refrains from attacking travelers who respect its territory is demonstrating behavior that complicates the simplest descriptions of the race. Such conduct does not, by itself, establish that the troll possesses the language, institutions, or collective identity required for personhood. It does, however, raise a question that the Monster Edicts are poorly equipped to answer: what happens when a creature classified as an unthinking beast consistently demonstrates that it can understand and respond to rules?

No recognized troll community has filed a formal petition. There is no precedent for how a kingdom would evaluate a troll's capacity to participate in a political body, and no accepted method for distinguishing an intelligent individual from an unusually capable but otherwise ordinary specimen.

Valdremor has little incentive to investigate. Its law permits the Ashguard to remove dangerous trolls without first determining whether they possess the capacity for legal personhood. The kingdom's landowners benefit when cleared territory becomes available, while monster hunters and alchemists profit from the sale of parts.

Other kingdoms have different reasons for their indifference. The dwarves prefer to secure their mines and trade routes. The elves regard trolls as part of the dangerous wilderness surrounding their protected lands, though their scholars are more inclined to distinguish between animal instinct and genuine intelligence. The Beastkin may recognize territorial behavior and individual memory as familiar traits, but their sympathy does not constitute an official policy of recognition.

For most people living near troll territory, the issue is not philosophical. It is whether the road is safe, whether livestock will survive the winter, and whether the Ashguard can remove the creature before another traveler disappears.

The trolls themselves have no unified answer. Some are little more than territorial predators. Others may be capable of far more than the kingdoms have bothered to establish.

In Aethermere, a troll is judged by how difficult it is to kill long before anyone asks whether it understands why it is being hunted.

19. #19Harpies

    Keys: harpies, Harpy

Harpies are classified as monsters throughout Aethermere, an intelligent, predominantly female race of winged humanoids whose colonies occupy cliff faces, mountain ridges, sea stacks, and the upper reaches of ancient ruins. Individually, they are rarely among the continent's most powerful creatures. In numbers, they are a different matter. Harpies attack from the air, coordinate with remarkable efficiency, and exploit terrain that makes conventional military formations nearly useless. A settlement that can repel a goblin raid may still be helpless against a harpy colony nesting on the cliffs above it.

They are neither mindless predators nor a unified civilization. Harpies possess language, social hierarchies, and enduring communal traditions, but their settlements are insular, their territorial boundaries fiercely defended, and their relationships with other races frequently hostile. Their intelligence is well established among experienced monster hunters. Under Aethermere's laws, it makes no difference.

Appearance: Harpies are humanoid from the waist upward, with avian characteristics concentrated in their lower limbs, shoulders, and wings. Their height generally falls within the range of human adults, though their proportions differ considerably. They tend to possess light torsos, narrow waists, strong backs, and powerful shoulders built to support sustained flight. Their bones are relatively light, while their chest muscles are exceptionally developed. A harpy may appear slender at rest, but the musculature beneath her feathers is dense and capable of generating tremendous force.

Their most conspicuous feature is the pair of wings extending from the upper back. These are fully functional flight appendages, broad and powerful, with a wingspan that commonly reaches twelve to eighteen feet depending on the individual and regional lineage. The feathers vary in color: brown, rust-red, charcoal, white, tawny gold, and mottled combinations are common. Coastal colonies frequently display pale undersides and darker upper feathers, while mountain populations tend toward grey, black, and earthy tones that blend into exposed rock.

Their wings are not decorative arms. They are essential to movement, balance, and survival. The wing joints connect to a specialized shoulder structure, and the muscles supporting them extend across the chest and upper back. Harpies can fold their wings tightly against the body when perched or walking, although the feathers still occupy considerable space. Their wings are vulnerable to severe damage, and an injured harpy may lose the ability to fly long before the injury becomes life-threatening.

The upper body is humanoid, with skin ranging from pale ivory and warm brown to bronze and deep umber. Feathers commonly cover the shoulders, upper arms, and portions of the back, blending into the wing structure. Some lineages possess feathered crests along the head or neck. Their faces are generally humanlike, though their noses may be narrower or more pronounced, and their eyes tend to be large and forward-facing. Iris colors include gold, amber, brown, grey, and occasionally vivid yellow.

Their hair varies between lineages. Some harpies grow ordinary hair from the scalp, often worn long and tied away from the face; others possess feathered crowns that extend down the nape. In many colonies, distinctive head plumage serves as a marker of kinship, maturity, or social position. A mature female may be recognized by her crest before she comes close enough for her facial features to be distinguished.

Their lower limbs are avian. The legs are scaled, with powerful thighs, backward-set joints, and feet ending in four strong digits equipped with curved talons. These feet are adapted for gripping branches, narrow ledges, and uneven rock. Harpies can carry prey or small objects while airborne, although weight quickly limits their range and maneuverability. Their talons are formidable weapons at close quarters, but they are primarily tools for gripping, hunting, and maintaining a secure perch.

Harpies do not possess equine or human feet, and conventional footwear is generally impractical. Their clothing is adapted to flight: woven wraps, leather harnesses, light hide, and fitted garments that do not interfere with the wings. Metal armor is uncommon because of its weight, although some wealthy or militarized colonies use small plates over the torso or reinforced leather around the forearms.

Ornaments are widespread. Feathers from departed relatives, polished stones, shells, beads, and fragments of scavenged metal may be woven into hair or attached to harnesses. These objects often carry social meaning, though their significance differs between colonies. An ornament that represents mourning in one settlement may indicate adulthood or a successful hunt in another.

Harpies have no humanlike hands at the ends of their wings. Their arms remain functional, with hands capable of grasping tools, preparing food, crafting objects, and manipulating written materials. This distinction is important: harpies are capable of ordinary manual work and are not limited to the use of their talons.

The Colonies: Harpies live in matriarchal colonies, usually established on high cliffs, isolated mountain peaks, coastal escarpments, or structures offering unobstructed access to the sky. A typical colony contains several dozen individuals, though unusually successful settlements may support considerably more. Most are organized around extended kinship groups, with the oldest and most influential females exercising authority over communal decisions.

At the head of a colony sits the queen, a position generally held by an experienced female whose authority rests on ancestry, judgment, and the ability to protect the settlement. The title does not necessarily belong to the strongest individual. A queen who cannot organize a defense, resolve disputes, or maintain access to food may lose the confidence of her colony. Challenges to authority are not unheard of, but they are generally resolved within the settlement rather than through any continent-wide political system.

Harpies have no single monarch, high council, or unified state. Each colony governs itself, and relationships between colonies range from close kinship alliances to bitter territorial rivalries. Neighboring settlements may exchange food, warn one another of approaching armies, or arrange temporary access to hunting grounds. They may also compete for nesting sites, raid one another's stores, or refuse assistance during a crisis.

Their settlements are carefully adapted to vertical terrain. Nests are constructed from branches, woven fibers, grasses, hides, and scavenged materials, secured in recesses or on broad ledges. Larger colonies maintain sheltered communal platforms, storage areas, and protected nesting chambers. Some occupy abandoned towers or ruined fortresses, gradually modifying them to accommodate flight and nesting.

The apparent disorder of a harpy settlement often misleads ground-dwellers. A cliffside that seems to contain nothing more than scattered nests may be divided into carefully understood territories, with established landing approaches, watch positions, food stores, and routes known to every resident. Harpies do not necessarily need walls when the terrain itself is difficult to approach.

Their culture is predominantly oral. Stories, genealogies, territorial agreements, and accounts of past conflicts are passed between generations through speech and communal recitation. Songs serve several purposes: some preserve history, some coordinate activity, and others communicate warnings across distances. Their vocal range is broad, though not every colony possesses the same musical or linguistic traditions.

Harpies are capable of written language, but literacy varies between settlements. Some use scripts learned through trade or scavenged books, while others maintain only limited written records. The lack of a standardized script is a political obstacle rather than proof of intellectual incapacity. A colony that possesses written records can still struggle to satisfy the formal requirements of a kingdom's personhood process, particularly when its settlement is small or its governance does not resemble the institutions recognized by human law.

Their economy centers on hunting, gathering, scavenging, and occasional exchange with neighboring settlements. Harpies hunt birds, small mammals, reptiles, and other available prey. Larger colonies may coordinate the capture of animals too large for a single hunter. They also collect eggs, fruits, roots, and other food sources from surrounding terrain.

Metalworking is uncommon, but harpies are not incapable of using metal tools. They acquire such objects through trade, scavenging, or raids. Their limited ability to transport heavy materials makes large-scale manufacturing difficult, and most colonies favor equipment that can be carried or stored without compromising flight.

Harpies are highly territorial around nesting grounds. An unfamiliar creature approaching a colony may be challenged well before reaching the nests themselves. A traveler who ignores warning calls, climbs toward a nesting ledge, or attempts to take eggs may provoke an attack by multiple defenders. Such responses are often described by neighboring kingdoms as unprovoked aggression, even when the harpies regard them as the defense of their homes.

This does not make harpies universally peaceful toward outsiders. Some colonies raid farms, attack travelers, or deliberately prey upon isolated settlements. Others maintain long periods of coexistence with nearby communities, provided their territories and food sources are respected. Their behavior depends on local customs, leadership, resources, and the history of previous encounters.

There is no universal harpy attitude toward the recognized peoples. Some colonies consider humans dangerous intruders, others avoid them entirely, and a few have maintained informal exchanges with remote villages for generations. None of these arrangements grants harpies legal standing.

Flight and Warfare: Harpies are most dangerous when they control the airspace above a battlefield. Their flight allows them to scout over obstacles, observe troop movements, and attack from directions that ground-based defenders cannot easily cover. Even a small group can harass a marching column, disrupt messengers, and force soldiers to maintain defensive formations over extended periods.

Their preferred tactics rely on mobility rather than prolonged close combat. Harpies may dive to strike exposed targets with their talons, drop objects onto tightly packed formations, or withdraw before heavily armed soldiers can retaliate. They favor elevated positions from which they can observe an approaching force and choose when to engage.

In colonies with strong coordination, individual hunters specialize in different tasks. Some identify targets, others draw defenders away from vulnerable positions, and experienced fliers direct attacks. Such methods are not universal military doctrine, but they demonstrate that harpy warfare can involve planning rather than instinct alone.

Their principal weakness is the vulnerability of their wings. A harpy forced to fight on the ground loses much of her mobility, and an injury that would be manageable for a human soldier can permanently alter a harpy's life. Ground-based combat also limits the usefulness of their talons, particularly against opponents wearing heavy armor.

Weather matters considerably. Strong crosswinds, heavy rain, freezing conditions, and restricted airspace can reduce a colony's ability to defend itself. Harpies understand their local weather patterns intimately, and experienced colonies tend to avoid committing their entire strength when conditions favor their opponents.

Their ranks generally fall within E–C, with considerable variation in individual skill. A typical adult harpy is dangerous to an untrained person, while an experienced hunter can threaten trained soldiers through speed, coordination, and access to the air. Exceptional individuals may reach B or, rarely, A, particularly among queens who have survived repeated conflicts or among specialist warriors.

A colony's collective threat is often greater than its members' individual rankings suggest. Several C-rank harpies acting together can create a problem that cannot be evaluated by simply adding their strength. Their ability to choose the terrain, attack from above, and disengage at will forces defenders to devote resources to observation, protection, and pursuit.

The Ashguard accordingly treats harpy colonies as a regional security concern when they occupy trade routes, cliffside settlements, or strategic passes. Their nests may be targeted when attacks become frequent, although removing a colony from a difficult position can require considerable preparation. A force that reaches the nesting grounds without controlling the approaches may find itself surrounded by attackers it cannot reliably engage.

Harpies are not national-level threats in the way that ancient dragons or the strongest unique monsters can be. Their danger is more localized and more persistent. A dragon may threaten an entire province through sheer destructive power; a harpy colony can make a narrow stretch of territory effectively unusable for years.

Standing: Harpies are ranked F through EX like all living beings, although most individuals fall between E and C. Their physical strength is generally lower than that of ogres or trolls, and their durability is closer to that of other humanoid races. Their advantage lies in mobility, coordination, and the ability to operate in environments inaccessible to ordinary ground forces.

A single harpy is usually manageable for a competent soldier, provided the soldier can force the encounter onto favorable terrain. A group of harpies is substantially more dangerous, especially when defending a colony or attacking from concealed positions. A large, experienced colony can threaten an isolated settlement or disrupt a major road, even without possessing any individual of exceptional rank.

Harpies are classified as monsters under the laws of Valdremor and the Sylvan Dominion of Elenvari. They cannot own property, enter legally enforceable contracts, or receive the protections afforded to recognized peoples. Their ability to communicate, maintain family structures, and organize communal defenses does not alter their classification.

Their lack of legal standing has direct consequences for their settlements. A colony established on a valuable cliff face may be removed to make way for a fortress, quarry, or trade route. Its inhabitants have no recognized right to contest the claim. Eggs, ornaments, and stored possessions may be seized as spoils, while the destruction of nests is treated as a legitimate consequence of clearing monster territory.

The economic incentives vary by region. Feathers and other materials may be sold to craftsmen or alchemists, though their value depends on quality and demand. More commonly, harpy colonies are targeted because of the danger they pose or because their nesting grounds occupy desirable land.

Harpies have no recognized kingdom, no unified diplomatic body, and no successful petition for personhood. Their decentralized political structure makes collective action difficult, while the limited size of most colonies makes it hard to sustain a prolonged campaign against a kingdom.

Nevertheless, their intelligence is rarely disputed by those who have actually encountered them. The controversy lies not in whether harpies can think, but in whether their form of society counts as civilization under laws written by other peoples.

Personhood: Harpies occupy an awkward position in Aethermere's legal order. They possess many of the characteristics that the personhood petition ostensibly requires: spoken language, kinship systems, communal governance, territorial customs, and, in some colonies, written records. Yet no harpy colony has successfully submitted a petition to a recognized throne.

The obstacles are partly practical. Many settlements contain fewer than one hundred individuals, and the requirement for a settled community can be difficult to satisfy when a colony's food supply depends on seasonal movement. Written language exists among some harpies but is not universal. Their queens exercise authority through traditions that may not resemble the councils and courts expected by human officials.

    The larger obstacle is political.

A harpy colony that attacks a caravan may be treated as evidence that the entire race is incapable of peaceful coexistence. A colony that avoids human territory for a year receives no corresponding presumption of good faith. If one settlement raids a village, another colony may find its own territory targeted in retaliation. The law recognizes the collective identity of harpies when assigning blame but refuses to recognize that identity when granting rights.

Valdremor's requirements make the situation particularly difficult. A petition would need to demonstrate a year of non-aggression toward recognized peoples, after which the Ashguard Council would have to approve it unanimously. Harpies cannot guarantee the conduct of every colony, and the kingdom has little incentive to distinguish a peaceful settlement from a hostile one when both fall under the same classification.

Elenvari is theoretically more receptive to monster personhood, but its Green Wardens still enforce the Monster Edicts. The Thalassic Court has never received a harpy petition, and no elven bloodline has committed itself to recognizing a colony's government as equivalent to that of a people.

The Beastkin present a different possibility. Their cultural emphasis on territory, kinship, and communal obligation makes some of their elders more willing to consider whether a harpy colony's behavior should be judged on its own merits. However, informal sympathy has not produced an official recognition policy, and the Pelt Dominion has its own political and security concerns.

For harpies, the result is a system in which their social organization is acknowledged whenever it makes them dangerous and ignored whenever it might make them eligible for rights.

Their queens may negotiate boundaries, arrange exchanges, settle disputes, and coordinate defenses. They may remember agreements for generations and punish members who endanger the colony through reckless behavior. None of this establishes legal personhood under Aethermere's current framework.

A harpy who steals livestock is a monster committing depredations. A human who destroys her nest is a citizen performing a lawful act of monster control. If the colony retaliates, the law sees confirmation of the harpies' inherent hostility rather than a dispute over territory.

The contradiction is particularly visible in colonies that have maintained long-standing arrangements with neighboring villages. Farmers may know a harpy queen by name, exchange food with her hunters, and rely on the colony to warn them of approaching predators. Such relationships can be stable for decades, yet they remain informal and revocable. The village has legal standing; the colony does not.

No harpy queen has yet forced the kingdoms to confront this contradiction through a formal petition. Whether that absence reflects a lack of political ambition, a rational fear of retaliation, or a judgment that the kingdoms cannot be trusted is unknown.

The harpies' greatest political weakness is not that they lack a society. It is that their societies are small enough to be dismissed individually, yet numerous enough to be feared collectively.

20. #20Minotaurs

    Keys: minotaur, Minotaurs

Minotaurs are classified as monsters throughout Aethermere, a reclusive, matriarchal race of massive humanoids distinguished by their bovine heads, extraordinary physical strength, and labyrinthine settlements carved into hillsides and rocky uplands. Unlike many monster races, they are not especially aggressive toward neighboring peoples, provided their territory is respected. They do not raid settlements for sport, pursue conquest, or seek the expansion of their hunting grounds beyond what their communities require. They simply refuse to negotiate with outsiders, and their refusal is absolute enough that neighboring kingdoms have largely learned to leave them alone.

Their settlements are among the oldest continuously inhabited structures in monster territory. Their labyrinths are not merely defensive fortifications but the centers of minotaur life, shaped over generations into interconnected dwellings, communal chambers, storage vaults, and ceremonial halls. They are not a unified kingdom, nor do they possess a recognized central authority. Each labyrinth belongs to its own tribe, and each tribe answers to its matriarchs.

Appearance: Minotaurs are massive, powerfully built humanoids with the head and characteristic features of cattle. Adults generally stand between seven and nine feet tall, with particularly large individuals approaching ten feet. Their bodies possess broad shoulders, deep chests, thick necks, and heavily muscled limbs. Their proportions favor stability and raw strength over speed, and their weight is supported by thick bones and broad, cloven hooves capable of carrying them across uneven stone.

Their heads resemble those of bulls or other large bovines, with broad muzzles, prominent nostrils, and heavy jaws. Their eyes are set to the sides of the skull, providing a wide field of vision, though their forward depth perception differs from that of humans. Their eyesight is adequate, but their hearing and sense of smell are exceptional. They can recognize individuals by scent, detect unfamiliar animals within their territory, and distinguish changes in their environment that a human visitor might never notice.

Horns are the most immediately recognizable feature of a minotaur. They grow from the upper sides of the skull, curving outward, upward, or forward depending on lineage. Some are short and thick, built for close-range impact; others extend into long, sweeping arcs. Horn coloration ranges from ivory and pale grey to dark brown and black, often darkening toward the tips. Horns continue to grow throughout much of a minotaur's life, and their shape becomes an important marker of age, ancestry, and individual identity.

The horns are not interchangeable ornaments. They are living bone covered by a hardened outer layer, supplied with blood during growth and vulnerable to injury. A broken horn can heal imperfectly, leaving a permanent irregularity. Among many tribes, the deliberate removal of another minotaur's horns is considered an extreme act of humiliation, while damage sustained in a legitimate contest may be treated as an honorable scar.

Their coats vary from black, brown, and reddish chestnut to cream, white, and mottled combinations. Some lineages possess thick, shaggy coats around the neck and shoulders, particularly in colder regions. Others have short, sleek fur over most of the body. The chest, forearms, and upper back are often heavily muscled beneath the coat, while the lower arms and legs are covered in shorter hair.

Their hands are humanoid, with five thick fingers, broad palms, and blunt nails. This allows them to manipulate tools, carve stone, weave materials, and perform delicate work despite their size. Their legs are digitigrade, ending in cloven hooves that provide excellent traction on stone and packed earth. Minotaurs can move surprisingly quietly when they choose to, though their mass makes prolonged silent movement difficult on loose gravel or unstable surfaces.

Their tails are short to moderate in length, ending in a tuft of coarse hair. Facial expressions are less immediately readable to humans than those of other humanoid races, particularly when the muzzle obscures familiar movements of the mouth. Minotaurs communicate emotion through posture, head position, ear movement, vocalization, and subtle changes in breathing. A lowered head does not always indicate submission; it can be a warning, an expression of concentration, or simply a comfortable resting posture.

Their voices are deep and resonant, with a range that extends from low, rumbling speech to powerful bellows capable of carrying through stone corridors. Their language relies on speech, gesture, and environmental context. Within a labyrinth, a familiar call may communicate identity, location, urgency, or a request for assistance without requiring a complete spoken sentence.

Minotaur clothing is practical and durable. Woven cloth, treated hides, leather harnesses, and heavy belts are common, with garments cut to accommodate their shoulders, tails, and horns. Metal ornaments are worn by some tribes, particularly around the neck, wrists, or horn bases. Their tools and weapons tend to be substantial: axes, hammers, spears, chisels, and heavy blades suited to their strength.

The horns often carry the most personal ornamentation. Rings, carved bands, dyed markings, and carefully fitted metal caps may indicate lineage, adulthood, mourning, or a position within the tribe. Such adornments are not standardized across Aethermere. A marking considered prestigious in one labyrinth may have no significance in another.

The Labyrinths: Minotaur society is organized around permanent settlements known as labyrinths. Most are carved into hillsides, ridges, or naturally fractured uplands, where layers of stone can be excavated into interconnected chambers and corridors. A typical tribe numbers between thirty and eighty individuals, though larger settlements exist. These populations generally consist of extended families, their descendants, and a small number of individuals who have joined the tribe through established customary ties.

The labyrinth is the center of minotaur identity. It contains dwellings, communal kitchens, storage rooms, workshops, water reservoirs, and ceremonial spaces. Larger settlements possess extensive underground chambers used for food preservation, toolmaking, and gatherings. Ventilation shafts and drainage channels are carefully maintained, and many labyrinths incorporate natural caves into their designs.

These structures are not random mazes. Their layouts reflect generations of accumulated knowledge, with routes shaped around geological weaknesses, water sources, ventilation, and the needs of the community. Corridors may narrow or widen according to their purpose, while particular chambers are reserved for families, communal activities, or the storage of important objects.

Minotaurs are capable stoneworkers. They understand how to exploit natural fractures, reinforce unstable ceilings, and redirect water through excavated channels. Their tools are often simpler than those produced by the dwarves, but their familiarity with the stone beneath their homes is extensive. A minotaur settlement may be physically modest aboveground while extending through a substantial network of subterranean chambers.

The labyrinth also serves as a defensive structure. Narrow passages restrict the number of attackers able to advance simultaneously, while bends and changes in elevation make it difficult for an unfamiliar force to maintain formation. Minotaurs know their own settlements intimately and can move through them without hesitation. Outsiders often mistake this familiarity for supernatural navigation, giving rise to stories that minotaurs can sense the shape of a maze through the stone itself.

There is no evidence of such an innate ability. Their advantage comes from memory, careful construction, and generations of experience. A minotaur knows which corridors flood during heavy rain, which ceilings are unstable, where a passage narrows behind a turn, and which chambers connect to concealed exits.

The tribes are matriarchal. Authority rests with the eldest and most respected females, who oversee communal decisions, family disputes, resource allocation, and relations between generations. Leadership is not necessarily inherited by the oldest daughter. A matriarch's standing depends on her judgment, experience, and ability to preserve the tribe's stability. When she becomes unable to fulfill her responsibilities, authority may pass to another senior female whose competence is widely accepted.

Older matriarchs are particularly influential. The oldest may possess decades of knowledge concerning the settlement's architecture, neighboring territories, and the history of previous encounters with outsiders. Their authority is not merely ceremonial; it is grounded in practical knowledge that cannot easily be replaced.

Minotaur males participate in communal life, defend the labyrinth, raise young, and undertake demanding physical work. Their role varies between tribes, but they do not ordinarily hold the highest governing positions. Physical strength is respected without being treated as sufficient qualification for political authority. A powerful young male may be an exceptional defender and still have no authority to overrule a matriarch's decision.

The tribe's refusal to negotiate with outsiders is one of its most distinctive characteristics. Minotaurs do not generally maintain diplomatic relations with neighboring kingdoms, and they do not send formal representatives to human courts. Trespassers may be warned away through calls, physical displays, or deliberate obstruction of the approaches to the labyrinth. Those who persist may be attacked.

This is not necessarily an expression of hatred. Minotaurs appear to regard the settlement as an extension of the community itself, and intrusion into its passages is treated as a direct violation of collective boundaries. Their refusal to negotiate is a cultural and political convention rather than proof that they are incapable of understanding diplomacy.

Their territories are generally modest. Most tribes require sufficient nearby land for grazing, hunting, gathering, and access to water, but they do not attempt to establish expansive borders or administer distant settlements. This makes their relationship with neighboring kingdoms relatively stable, provided neither side attempts to seize the labyrinth or exploit its surrounding resources.

Culture and Tradition: Minotaur culture is conservative, communal, and strongly tied to ancestry. Traditions are preserved through oral histories, repeated ceremonies, and the physical structure of the labyrinth itself. A passage may be known by the name of the matriarch who ordered it excavated, while a communal chamber may commemorate a famine, a migration, or a long-forgotten defense of the settlement.

Their histories emphasize continuity rather than conquest. The founding of a labyrinth, the preservation of a water supply, the survival of a harsh winter, and the reconciliation of a divided family may be remembered with greater importance than the defeat of an enemy. This reflects a society in which the survival of the community is the primary measure of success.

Minotaurs place considerable value on patience and reliability. A promise made within the tribe is treated as a serious obligation, and repeated failure to fulfill one's responsibilities can result in lasting loss of standing. The precise customs governing promises differ between settlements, but the underlying expectation is widespread: an individual's actions must not endanger the continuity of the community.

They are also deeply attached to physical spaces. A family dwelling may remain in use for generations, with additions made as the household grows. Tools are repaired rather than discarded, and objects associated with ancestors are preserved whenever possible. The destruction of a labyrinth is consequently more than the loss of shelter. It can represent the destruction of a tribe's history, identity, and connection to its dead.

Minotaurs are not uniformly hostile toward strangers as individuals. A traveler encountered outside the territory may be ignored if no threat is perceived. A lost child or injured animal may occasionally be returned to the edge of the settlement, though accounts of such incidents are difficult to verify. What remains consistent is the distinction between an outsider who stays outside and one who attempts to enter.

They do not maintain a standardized written language across all tribes. Some use carved symbols and simple records, but most rely on oral tradition and the direct transmission of knowledge. This limits their ability to document agreements in the forms recognized by human courts, though it does not imply a lack of memory, law, or social organization.

Their reluctance to negotiate also creates a self-reinforcing misunderstanding. Human officials often interpret silence as an inability to reason, while minotaurs may regard repeated diplomatic approaches as deliberate attempts to disregard their refusal. Each side sees the other's behavior as confirmation of its existing beliefs.

Warfare and Defense: Minotaurs are formidable defenders of fixed territory. Their physical strength allows them to wield heavy weapons, move stone barriers, and withstand the demands of prolonged combat. Their thick builds and dense musculature provide substantial resilience, although they are not naturally armored against blades, arrows, or magic.

Their preferred weapons include axes, hammers, spears, and heavy clubs. Some tribes use large shields or reinforced hide armor, while others rely on the natural defensive advantages of their settlements. Equipment is typically maintained for long periods, with repairs and modifications carried out by the tribe itself.

In open terrain, minotaurs are dangerous opponents but not invincible ones. Their size and strength make them effective in close combat, yet they can be outmaneuvered by faster enemies and are vulnerable to concentrated missile fire. Their greatest advantage emerges when they can choose the ground.

A labyrinth transforms their defensive capabilities. Narrow passages prevent an attacking force from bringing its full numbers to bear, while sharp turns limit visibility and make coordinated movement difficult. Minotaurs can withdraw through familiar routes, regroup behind internal barriers, and use their knowledge of the structure to exhaust intruders.

Their tactics are defensive rather than expansionist. There is little evidence that minotaur tribes seek to conquer neighboring settlements or establish distant dominions. When a conflict occurs, it is usually tied to trespass, attempted occupation, resource extraction, or direct threats to the labyrinth.

This pattern has helped preserve their independence. Kingdoms have little to gain from attacking a tribe that occupies a difficult position, poses no continuing threat beyond its own territory, and would require substantial military resources to dislodge. The potential rewards of conquest rarely justify the cost.

Minotaur tribes do not normally coordinate their defenses across the continent. A threatened labyrinth cannot assume that neighboring tribes will send warriors, and no recognized institution exists to organize a common response. Their isolation protects them from many external entanglements, but it also means that a sufficiently determined enemy can target individual settlements without confronting a unified minotaur polity.

Standing: Minotaurs are ranked F through EX like all living beings, although most individuals fall within the B–A range. Their size, physical strength, and familiarity with difficult terrain make them formidable even without specialized training.

Young or inexperienced minotaurs may rank lower, while experienced defenders commonly reach the upper end of the ordinary range. The oldest matriarchs can reach A rank, reflecting decades of survival, physical development, and experience. Such individuals are exceptional within their tribes, but their authority is not based on rank alone.

A B-rank minotaur is a dangerous close-combat opponent. An A-rank defender operating inside a labyrinth can pose a much greater threat than the same individual encountered on open ground. An S-rank matriarch may be capable of coordinating an entire settlement's defense while personally representing one of its strongest combatants.

Their strength is not their only advantage. Minotaurs are accustomed to maintaining permanent structures, organizing communal labor, and preserving knowledge across generations. Their settlements are difficult to assault precisely because they combine physical defenders with a defensive environment built through decades or centuries of work.

They lack the population, centralized command, and appetite for expansion required to become a major military power. No minotaur kingdom exists, and no individual minotaur is recognized as a continental ruler. Their power is concentrated in the local territory they inhabit.

Valdremor classifies minotaurs as monsters under the Monster Edicts. Their labyrinths possess no recognized sovereignty, and their inhabitants have no legal right to contest a human claim to the land. If a settlement occupies territory designated for a mine, fortress, or road, the kingdom's law provides no requirement to negotiate with its residents.

In practice, minotaur territories are often left alone. Their settlements are difficult to conquer, their inhabitants rarely initiate conflict, and their isolation makes them less disruptive to surrounding kingdoms than many other monster populations. This is a pragmatic arrangement, not a recognition of their rights.

The Ironhold Compact occasionally encounters minotaur settlements in mountainous regions, particularly where their labyrinths intersect with mineral-bearing hills. Dwarven authorities tend to assess these encounters through questions of access, extraction, and physical security. They may avoid a costly conflict when a deposit can be reached elsewhere, but they do not recognize minotaur territorial claims as equivalent to dwarven ownership.

The elves are generally less inclined to disturb established wilderness settlements without reason, although the Green Wardens still classify minotaurs as monsters. The Beastkin may recognize similarities between minotaur communal traditions and their own emphasis on kinship, but no official policy of personhood recognition has emerged.

Personhood: Minotaurs are an unusual case in Aethermere's legal order. They possess stable settlements, collective governance, established customs, and long-standing traditions of territorial stewardship. Their labyrinths may remain inhabited for generations, and their matriarchs exercise authority over disputes, resources, and communal obligations.

By the standards of ordinary political observation, they exhibit many of the characteristics associated with a functioning society.

Yet no minotaur tribe has submitted a personhood petition.

The reasons are not entirely clear. Their refusal to negotiate with outsiders makes formal engagement with a kingdom's throne unlikely. Their reliance on oral tradition complicates the written-language requirement, while the insular structure of their communities leaves little incentive to seek recognition from institutions they do not trust.

The absence of a petition is often treated by Valdremor as evidence that minotaurs are incapable of political participation. That interpretation confuses unwillingness with inability. A tribe that refuses to petition has not necessarily failed to meet the requirements; it may have rejected the process itself.

There is, however, no established minotaur position on legal personhood. Their isolation makes it difficult to determine whether the tribes understand the distinction between a recognized people and a legally unprotected monster, or whether they regard the distinction as an external concern with little relevance to their own customs.

They do not appear to seek the rights associated with citizenship, nor do they attempt to establish embassies, trade treaties, or recognized political boundaries. Their behavior suggests that the preservation of their existing way of life matters more than participation in the institutions of neighboring kingdoms.

That does not mean they are indifferent to the consequences of their classification. A mining expedition that enters a labyrinth's territory without permission may destroy chambers, damage ancestral sites, or force the tribe to abandon its home. Under Valdremor's law, the minotaurs have no recognized standing to challenge the intrusion. If they resist, their resistance is treated as monster aggression.

The contradiction is especially stark because the very characteristics that make minotaurs difficult to govern — their territorial independence, their refusal to negotiate, and their determination to preserve their settlements — are also the characteristics that allow their communities to endure.

Unlike the orcs, who have sought recognition through formal petitions, or the dragons, whose intelligence is impossible for serious scholars to deny, the minotaurs have made no public argument for their status. Their position is expressed through the continued existence of their labyrinths and their refusal to surrender them.

Whether that constitutes a deliberate rejection of the kingdoms' legal order or simply a refusal to engage with it remains open to interpretation.

For now, the law has no need to resolve the question. Minotaurs rarely leave their territories, and the kingdoms rarely enter them without a reason. The arrangement persists because neither side has found sufficient cause to force the issue.

21. #21The Verdant Expanse

    Keys: Verdant expanse

The Verdant Expanse is a vast, ancient wilderness stretching across the northern reaches of Aethermere, a seemingly endless sea of primeval forests, tangled jungles, moss-choked ruins, and rivers that vanish beneath canopies untouched by sunlight. It is one of the continent's most densely populated monster territories, home to goblin tribes, ogres, trolls, harpy colonies, and creatures whose existence has never been documented by any kingdom. Entire ecosystems thrive beyond the reach of civilization, where even common monsters grow unusually dangerous and ancient beasts claim territories larger than human provinces. Scattered throughout the Expanse lie the remnants of forgotten civilizations, their crumbling towers and buried cities slowly reclaimed by the forest. Valdremor maintains fortified settlements and monster-hunting outposts along its southern borders, but its authority diminishes with every mile northward. Expeditions disappear, maps become obsolete, and patrols occasionally return with accounts of creatures that exceed established rank classifications. The elves of Elenvari claim a spiritual kinship with the ancient wilderness, though even their Green Wardens avoid certain regions. To most of Aethermere, the Verdant Expanse is a source of rare resources and dangerous monsters; to those who live within it, it is simply home.

22. #22The Ashen Wastes

    Keys: wastes, Ashen wastes

The Ashen Wastes stretch across the southern reaches of Aethermere, forming a vast, desolate expanse between the fertile heartlands of Valdremor and the territories claimed by the Ashen Dominion. Where the Verdant Expanse overwhelms the senses with life, the Wastes are defined by its absence: cracked earth, blackened plains, salt flats, and hills stripped bare by centuries of harsh conditions. Ash drifts across the landscape in dry winds, settling over abandoned settlements and the remnants of roads that once connected the region to the kingdoms beyond. Water is scarce, vegetation grows only in scattered pockets, and even hardy beasts struggle to survive far from the few reliable springs and underground reservoirs. The Wastes are not entirely lifeless, however. Scavengers, burrowing monsters, and creatures adapted to the barren terrain inhabit its ravines and ruined structures, while some ancient ruins contain sealed chambers and artifacts from civilizations that vanished long before Valdremor’s founding. The kingdom maintains fortified settlements and heavily guarded trade routes along the Wastes’ northern reaches, but its authority weakens with every mile southward. Travelers speak of strange lights beyond the horizon, unnatural storms that bury entire caravans, and stretches of ground where compasses fail and familiar magic behaves unpredictably; many accounts are exaggerated, yet enough expeditions disappear to discourage all but the best-equipped explorers. Farther south, the land becomes increasingly hostile as it approaches the Ash Line, the dead border separating Aethermere’s kingdoms from the Ashen Dominion. Nothing grows along that boundary, and no confirmed expedition from a People kingdom has crossed into the Dominion and returned. To Valdremor, the Ashen Wastes are a buffer against the Demon Lord’s empire, a source of dangerous resources, and a permanent reminder that the southern frontier can never be considered secure. To those who live there, they are a place where survival depends less on strength than on knowing which ruins still hold water, which winds carry poison, and which distant fires must never be approached.

23. #23The Glimmering Coast

    Keys: Glimmering coast

The Glimmering Coast stretches along the eastern shores of Aethermere, where the ancient forests of Elenvari descend toward a vast expanse of pale beaches, jagged cliffs, sheltered bays, and deep blue waters. By day, the coastline shimmers beneath the sun as countless fragments of quartz, pearl-like shells, and mineral-rich sands catch the light, giving the region its name. By night, the sea becomes something stranger: bioluminescent plankton paints the waves in ribbons of blue and silver, while distant lights flicker beneath the surface, attributed by coastal inhabitants to the reclusive Merfolk of the Abyssal Throne. Fishing villages, elven ports, and small merchant settlements dot the shore, trading in salt, pearls, rare sea plants, and goods brought down from the Sylvan Dominion's forests. Elenvari controls much of the northern coastline, and its Green Wardens patrol the meeting point between ancient woodland and open sea, protecting sacred groves that grow within sight of the waves. Farther south, independent harbors and fishing communities maintain looser ties to the Dominion, often preferring profitable trade to elven oversight. Beneath the water, however, lies a world that surface maps barely acknowledge. The continental shelf descends into vast underwater valleys, coral formations, and submerged ruins, some believed to predate the oldest elven settlements. Sailors occasionally report strange songs rising from calm waters, ships guided away from reefs by unexplained lights, or entire stretches of sea where fish vanish without warning. The Merfolk rarely reveal themselves, and no surface kingdom has charted the full territory of their underwater realm. Although the Glimmering Coast is among Aethermere's most prosperous maritime regions, its beauty conceals considerable danger: violent seasonal storms, treacherous currents, coastal monsters, and deep-water predators capable of destroying vessels far larger than fishing boats. Valdremor merchants seek greater influence along its ports, while Elenvari guards its coastal sovereignty and the Merfolk remain indifferent to both ambitions. To the kingdoms of the surface, the Glimmering Coast is a gateway to trade, exploration, and wealth; to those who understand its waters, it is a border between the known world and a civilization that has never needed the surface's permission to endure.

24. #24The Spine of Khar

Keys: the spine, Spine of khar

The Spine of Khar is a colossal mountain range running through the heart of Aethermere, its jagged peaks forming a natural barrier between the western kingdoms and the lands beyond. Towering summits of dark granite and iron-rich stone rise above the clouds, while deep valleys, glacial ravines, and narrow passes make crossing the range dangerous even for experienced travelers. Snow blankets the highest elevations year-round, and violent storms sweep through the upper peaks with little warning. Yet beneath this unforgiving surface lies one of the greatest concentrations of mineral wealth on the continent: vast veins of iron, copper, silver, gold, and rare magical ores, alongside deposits of stone prized by master craftsmen. Within the mountains, the seven great clans of the Ironhold Compact have carved out fortified holds connected by tunnels, subterranean roads, and immense stone bridges. Some holds descend dozens of levels beneath the surface, containing foundries, workshops, reservoirs, markets, ancestral halls, and entire residential districts illuminated by enchanted crystals and carefully engineered systems of heat and ventilation. Each clan governs its own territory according to ancient customs, but all answer to the Deep Council of seven clan-thanes, whose authority rests upon contracts, precedent, and obligations inherited across generations. The dwarves regard the mountains not merely as a homeland but as an inheritance entrusted to them by their ancestors, and every tunnel, forge, and boundary marker carries legal and historical significance. Trade routes through the Spine of Khar are among the most valuable in Aethermere, connecting distant kingdoms through guarded mountain passes where the Ironhold Compact collects tolls, enforces agreements, and maintains the infrastructure upon which continental commerce depends. These routes are protected by disciplined dwarf soldiers and fortified checkpoints, but the deeper tunnels are not entirely secure. Goblins infest abandoned workings, ogres sometimes occupy exposed valleys, and ancient creatures lurk in caverns that even the dwarves refuse to enter. Deeper still, miners occasionally uncover sealed chambers, unfamiliar inscriptions, and structures whose craftsmanship predates the oldest surviving clan records. The dwarves seldom discuss such discoveries with outsiders, and expeditions into the deepest regions are governed by strict clan law. Valdremor depends upon the Spine's trade routes and metal exports, while Elenvari purchases refined goods without welcoming dwarf influence into its forests. The other kingdoms maintain their own commercial relationships with the Compact, whose reputation for reliability is matched only by its refusal to forgive a broken contract. To outsiders, the Spine of Khar is an obstacle to be crossed and a treasure to be exploited; to the dwarves, it is a fortress, a legacy, and a living record of their civilization, carved into stone that remembers far more than any surface kingdom knows.
