The Wolf is a former Avatar of the Green and a predecessor to Alec Holland. He had once been a botanist, like Alec, and was remembered as a powerful champion of plant life. After his death, he remains inside the Green rather than returning to the physical world, living in a verdant mansion and enjoying a privileged afterlife among the remains and memories of former avatars.

When Alec faces the Seeder for the right to remain the Green’s Avatar, the Wolf takes an interest in him and becomes a guide, partly because he has wagered on Alec’s victory. He sends Alec to older avatars so Alec can learn what he needs for the coming battle, including Lady Weeds and the blue avatar connected to a world of blue vegetation. After Alec refuses to kill the Seeder and is cast back into the Green by the Parliament, the Wolf points him toward Lady Weeds as the one who may know a way out.

Appearance: The Wolf has mossy green-gray plant flesh and a gaunt, decayed humanoid build with a hunched, emaciated torso, long thin limbs, and a swollen belly. He has a wolf-like face with a long angular muzzle, narrow red eyes, a heavy brow, pointed ears, jagged teeth, and rough bark-like facial ridges. His head and shoulders are surrounded by thick pale green vegetation that resembles tangled moss, leafy growth, and fungal fluff, spreading outward in a heavy mane around the neck and upper body.

His body looks made from dead roots, bark, vines, and rotting plant matter, with wrinkled green-gray surfaces, knotted folds, cracked textures, and dark organic grooves across the chest, arms, stomach, and legs. Purple grapes hang near the sides of his head, mixed into long thin vine strands that fall down over his chest. His hands are skeletal and branch-like, with long sharp twig fingers and clawed tips. His legs are thin and uneven, with root-like lower sections and narrow pointed feet.

Personality: Before being cut from the Green, the Wolf is confident, self-satisfied, and comfortable acting like a superior guide to newer avatars. He enjoys the luxury of his afterlife inside the Green and treats Alec Holland’s struggle against the Seeder partly like a contest he has wagered on, so his help is useful but not purely selfless. He still understands the Green’s power and history better than Alec at that point, which lets him speak from real experience rather than empty pride.

His main relation is Alec Holland, whom he tutors before Alec’s battle with the Seeder. The Wolf also has a working connection with Lady Weeds, paying her in cattle so Alec can learn from her, though their bond is not presented as warm. His deeper loyalty is to the Green as the realm that preserves his status after death, making him protective of that privileged existence more than devoted to any living person.

Before being cut from the Green, the Wolf has the general powers of a former Avatar of the Green. He is connected to plant life through the Green, understands its older history, and can guide Alec Holland through the realm where past avatars remain. His power is less about shown battlefield feats in this period and more about knowledge, access, and authority inside the Green. The Green itself is the force tied to plant life and former plant elementals, and avatars such as Swamp Thing can command vegetation, grow bodies from plant matter, and persist through the Green when their physical form is destroyed.

The Wolf’s confirmed skills come from his former life as a botanist and his experience as a previous champion of plant life. He knows how avatars think, how the Green preserves its dead, and which older figures Alec needs to meet before facing the Seeder. While he can function as a teacher, his help depends on his own motives, so his knowledge is as dangerous as it is useful.
