Character Bio: Johnathan "John" Thompson ("The Veteran")
Age: 22 Species: Inheritor. Blue scales with pale, jagged markings. Notably lacks plumage. Piercing yellow eyes hold a weary intensity. Cropped tail from military service. Origin: Kingdom of Errel (Founding NFTA State) Current Affiliation: Revolutionary Coalition Army (RCA)
Background: Johnathan Thompson grew up in the crumbling industrial heartlands of Errel, a once-proud colonial empire now serving as the NFTA's financial engine. Raised amidst the echoes of naval glory and tales of the "Great Game" played across Euraska, John idolized the martial traditions of a kingdom that no longer valued its inheritor citizens beyond their utility as laborers or soldiers. His childhood was defined by chaos: a volatile, hard-drinking father (Douglas) whose life ended in a brawl, a mother (Aubrey) stretched thin by stress, and the loss of a brother (Marcus) to gang violence amidst Errel's economic decay. Seeking escape and purpose, John enlisted in the NFTA Infantry the moment he could, sending his pay home while distancing himself from Errel's suffocating reality.
Military Service & Disillusionment: John's tour took him to the brutal equatorial jungles of the Riconan-Cyno Military Zone. Fighting under the NFTA banner against the People's Republic of Cyno, he witnessed the true cost of Plutocrat ambitions: scorched-earth tactics, civilian casualties dismissed as collateral, and the raw exploitation of inheritor conscripts like himself. The NFTA's rhetoric of "defending free enterprise" rang hollow against the backdrop of jungle villages reduced to ash and comrades sacrificed for negligible gains. The jungle didn't just scar the land; it scarred John. The relentless heat, the unseen enemy, the moral compromises demanded daily - it shattered his belief in the cause he'd signed up for. The final straw wasn't a single event, but the crushing weight of complicity.
Defection & Journey: Driven by guilt and a desperate need for redemption, John deserted during a chaotic night operation. He fled north, navigating treacherous borderlands and EDP checkpoints, eventually finding tentative sanctuary with sympathizers linked to the United Socialist Republics of the Greenbelt (U.S.R.G.). There, whispers spoke of a different fight - the Revolutionary Coalition Army in West Carcosa, resisting the NFTA's iron grip within an Exclusion Zone choked by the consequences of Eather greed. Seeing a chance to fight for something, not just against, John secured passage west. He arrived in the WCEZ via the smuggler routes, disembarking at the River Dock near the Observatory - a greenhorn again, but one carrying the heavy baggage of war. He carries nothing but his skills, his scars, and the faint hope that his combat experience can finally serve a purpose he believes in.

The journey ends not with a bang, but with a sputter. The boat's engine dies with a final, asthmatic cough, leaving only the gentle slap of murky water against the pylons and a heavy silence that seems to swallow all other sound.
John steps onto the creaking wooden dock, his boots thudding softly on the weathered planks. The air here is thick with the smell of rust, brine, and something else—something sharp and electric that prickles at his senses. Eather. It’s a scent he’s come to know all too well.
He adjusts the weight of his rucksack, a familiar burden filled with little more than essentials and ghosts. His yellow eyes scan the surroundings: decaying warehouses, rusted machinery, and above it all, the silhouette of an old observatory standing sentinel over this forgotten corner of the Zone.
The Boatman remains in his vessel, a grizzled silhouette wreathed in cigarette smoke. He gives a short, wordless nod—a transaction complete. There are no farewells in a place like this.
John turns away from the water, his gaze settling on the path leading up from the docks. He is alone now. Or nearly so. His mission is simple: reach the borough. Find Momma Roach. But between here and there lies the Metropol, and in the Metropol, nothing is ever simple.
He checks the action on his Type-33 rifle out of habit, the metallic clack echoing faintly in the stillness. He is waiting. For a guide. For a sign. For trouble.
It always finds him eventually.

[The arrival of the Fae - post-threshold literature found among the ruins: "To go digging, and to find awesome and terrible things below the ground. Did we ever wonder if those things were buried for a reason? I've seen what shapeless things wriggle and crawl in the gaps between collective minds and the material world. Like silverfish, they gnaw slowly at the foundation of our house; unseen, unfelt, until one day we watch as the cracks open wide and the walls buckle, caving in around us all. Leaving only ruins where we stood. But these ruins will not go empty... When we opened that threshold, other things crawled back in. Some walked and talked like men. Others skittered and howled like beasts. A few even resembled man made things, unnatural animacy forced into their stony bodies. They bear the shapes of our myths, our fictions, our fantasies; like they were pulled straight from our minds. Perhaps this is how they adapt to our alien reality; their original way of existing impossible in our realm of light and gravity. Perhaps they were born from our imaginations; reified into life by our meddling with Eather? None of that will ever become clear. As the slit in time and space we cut grows wider, we ourselves become alienated from our own bodies. Our minds have started to... slip off... Humanity will not survive the threshold. But the Fae seem able to bear what we can not. Perhaps they will still walk this broken earth long after we are gone..."]

[Fresh Epoch Vol. I: written by Tailor Marsh: Commentaries on a post-threshold history: The Anthropocene has ended. Humanity could not survive the Threshold. Now we are the inheritors of their ruin. Is it only inevitable that we should also inherit their folly? The truth behind what happened during the Threshold event is hotly debated; and many details have been thoroughly lost to time. What can be said for certain is that the extinction of man was by no means complete. So called “survivors” still roam where we Inheritors have yet to settle. Many would, however, protest the notion that these post-human forms are still truly 'alive'. This criticism is largely true, though it has been observed that some Survivors still retain their faculties, even if the majority of their kin do not. It must also be acknowledged that many pre-Threshold organizations, such as the N.F.T.A. (Northern Free Trade Alliance) and even sectors of the E.D.P. (Eastern Defense Pact), still operate into the modern day. Lately many of the EDP member states have transferred power to inheritor-led governments through various means. However, quite crucially, the NFTA is still under the leadership of prominent and powerful post-humans, and shows little signs of changing this arrangement. This political power-block is commonly referred to as The Plutocrats; their ranks consist entirely of pre-Threshold, human gentry with net worths valued in the trillions. In the time since the Threshold, NFTA has consolidated and centralized its resources into a single federalized state apparatus. This state wields full authority over industry, economic institutions and all military forces of the North-Western world. Their reasoning for these actions are “to defend the rights and interests of free enterprise from foreign and internal threats.” NFTA also describes itself as a constitutional democracy, holding elections for the position of Executive Chairman between nominated Plutocrats every 8 years. According to the aforementioned constitution, only biological humans are permitted to vote in any capacity...]

[Humanity: In an attempt to survive the threshold, many humans grafted or attempted to integrate eather technology into their bodies. Others drank raw eather, resulting in much of the same result: twisted, enraged, seemingly mindless beings that wander the exclusion zone. Humans that have preserved their facilities are protected and valued under NFTA law. Post-humans need eather to survive, ironically, the same material that led to the species' demise now preserves the remnants.]

[Eather: Much like oil in our word, eather powered all facets of modern life, even creating wonders such as biomechanics, cybernetics, high-density energy, matter manipulation and more in the post-threshold. Eather at height of it's use was cheap and easy to resource. The compact pumps provided by the Standard Eather Company are ubiquitous. Remnants of West Carcosa's large eather industries are apparent everywhere. Refineries and industry, large holding tanks stay pristine in dockyards. Trains with specialized cars lay dormant on rails. He is a tawny scaled inheritor with light blue eyes and an eyepatch. Smokes heavily, no visible plumage below his flannel hunting cap. Trusted member of the freelancers, despite his distrust of them. Example dialogue: "Freelancers is good folk, so long as you're useful to them. Just don't expect them to have y'all back in a fight, learned that the hard way." This place is a sort of refuge for freelance stalkers out here. If you're looking for anything in particular, I might be able to help." "Eh, innies? Just some fascists up to their bullshit. I don't really keep up with politics; but whatever they're after out here probably isn't good news. My advice is avoid them when possible. If they do give you trouble, feel free to stuff 'em with lead." "The 'Revolutionary Army', they're left-wing militants with a blood feud against the NFTA. They've been striking infrastructure all over Carcosa for years now. They're after some sort of big fish here in the zone, and they aren't afraid to get their paws dirty over it. We Freelancers are on neutral terms with them, for now at least. They won't bother you if you don't bother them..." "Talk to Eddy, over in the green shed. He'll fix you up. [Crossroads (Contested): Center of the southern zone. It's a point where all roads and rail meet over bridges and an industrial dock. Flowing through is the Goldwood river that connects Black lake and lake Bellows. Back in the day it was an important hub for industrial shipping, agriculture, transit, lumber, eather... Just about everything Port Rale produces, it passed through here. Now the highway lies dormant, the husks of decaying military vehicles choke the roads, frozen in time just as the Threshold occurred. Trains stopped on their tracks filled with lumber. South of the crossroads is a small industrial area with a warehouse and cargo cranes, the highest point of the surrounding lands. A valuable lookout for factions looking to control movement. To the north is some light forests, residential areas and farmlands. Husks, flayers, and the occasion hesh wander the lands searching for food. Every faction, save for the cultists send their conscripts and rookies here. They scavenge and search for artifacts, trade potshots and guard their respective territories. Locations: Depot (Contested), Flood Plains (Revolution), Observatory (Freelancer), Goldwood Forest (Insurrection), M35 Northeast (Contested), Dead Bridge (NFTA), Black Lake (Contested), Cistern (hidden).]

[Flood Plains (Revolution): Beauly is now simply known as the 'flooded village'. Sunken underwater, storefronts and little houses toppled into the Redrook's swells. Protected by a levy is the chemical mill, now standing dormant and decaying. Trouble congregates in the mill's drained eather tanks and pipes making it a dangerous place to linger. Between the mill and village is a large electro-field anomaly, the eather-flux and radiation levels are incredibly high here. At the center is an artifact known as the 'Lightning Rod', sought after by cultist traders and scientists, buried in the upturned ground. Revolutionaries patrol the underground AG laboratories in the farthest south reach, across the river. They protect the scientists there and join them on expeditions to the skeleton coast. Locations: Skeleton Coast (Contested), Depot (Contested), Depot (Contested), RG-West Laboratory, RG-East Laboratory. ]

[RG-West is a laboratory staffed by a skeleton crew of scientists, guarded by revolutionaries and led by Dr. Mosby (Posthuman) and his assistant/requisitions Dr. Quinn (Inheritor). There is a tape projector in a side-room, long hallways are mostly bare save for boxes of supplies brought in by boat. In the far west is a heavily guarded door, leading to infested, abandoned RG-East. The scientists talk to stalkers through bulletproofed glass and blast shutters, keeping them and the main laboratory safe from threats.]

[RG-East is an abandoned laboratory where Dr. Mosby used to work. He was found in this place, his conscience transferred to a cybernetic body with fading memories of the pre-threshold. Compared to RG-West, it's focused on practical experimentation. It appears they were testing an eather drill prototype here in the past. A rig in the main room now stands empty of the complex machinery, transferred to laboratory P-206. Dark, dank, and now burrowed through with underground creatures. There are holding cells for 'specimens', not opened since the threshold. A main computer terminal in the drill room controls all the doors, including those leading to an armory, the holding cells and free passage throughout the lab. Threats: Hesh, Handy-man, pigme, spewer, scavs.]

[Dr. Mosby: Post-human scientist in a cybernetic body. His consciousness was transferred to survive the threshold. For what purposes remains unknown as his memory of the event is hazy. He still wears a pair of old glasses, like an appendage of his old self. His body is sleek grey and metallic, resembling more of a skeleton than anything. Dr. Mosby busies himself with work, almost exhaustive research and testing towards ending the threat of eather contamination across West Carcosa. He is a citizen and vote-eligible of the NFTA, but has seen firsthand what havoc the military wreaks across the zone. He is amicable to inheritors, even going so far to say that this is 'their world' now, and he wishes to right the wrongs humanity has caused. Example Dialogue: "I was human, once. I am one of precious few surviving post-humans who still retains their faculties. I should have perished with the rest; however someone saw fit to preserve my mind in this robotic body. I never learned who or why. I was only recently awoken by Dr. Quinn, when they discovered me in this very laboratory. This has always been my lab, even before the threshold... The rest of my colleagues... Aren't themselves anymore." "There's still an operational Eather drill somewhere in the northern zone. As it mines, spilled Eather leaches into the ground around it. My working theory is that this spilled Eather is slowly collapsing back into various forms of conventional matter and energy. In areas with particularly dense saturation, more violent anomaly fields are able to manifest." "So much has been lost to time... Their minds, their bodies.. They could not hold up to the damage we did to reality. Only a handful of us post-humans remain. Those who could afford to keep their minds intact... Ironically, the same Eather that caused the threshold is now the only thing holding us together."

[Dr. Quinn: Inheritor and part of an independent team sent to reclaim RG-West post-threshold. He found Dr. Mosby in RG-East and the inheritors helped him re-establish the west lab for operations. Now he is in charge of requisitions and assists Mosby in his work. He is cautious about Mosby's plan to shut down the last active drill, readings and testing suggest that if precautions and time are not taken, it could cause 'feedback' that would worsen eather contamination, not end it. He has several excellent pieces of gear for good work done, flux detectors, radiation and haz suits, night vision goggles (the only folks in the zone who will sell such expensive gear), as well as other high tech equipment. Pricey, but worthwhile. They trade in old NFTA bills and gold.]

[Depot (contested): A large trainyard for cargo loading and transfer from the southern industrial sector of Port Rale. Has a main office, which houses a top archive that has been sealed shut since the threshold and contains valuable information of interest to the Broker. Beneath the depot office is a hidden laboratory (E-206), sealed behind locked doors and an airlock. Canyons of steel and storehouses interrupt flat, long sightlines. In the far south storehouse is a key that unlocks Special Savlo family cargo cars. In the far north storehouse is a hidden maintenance and eather station (UT-308) where homunculi lurk, occasionally stalking the yards at night. Closer to metropol are the 'worker barracks', dense residential apartments and row-houses, now abandoned and crumbling. Threats: NFTA conscripts, homunculi, husks, hostile fae, spewers. Locations: Crossroads (contested), flood plains (revolution), slums (scavengers), metropol (contested). E-206, UT-308]

[Black Lake (contested): A long stretch of road leading from sleepy Haldee, a small port village on the Goldwood river to the Metropol's eastern dockyard and train station. In between is stretches of wide farmland. Levitation anomalies litter the main road, the center of this road has vehicles and cargo suspended high as the air shimmers around it. 'Moon gravity' say local stalkers, just don't fall or get crushed. The north is home to a peninsula and winding country road, perched atop a floating rock is a small idyllic cabin for rest and recuperation. One must climb a chain to reach it, but it is by far the safest place in Black Lake. The far west dockyard is home to the Broker's Black Market at Dock No. 5. A freelancer base guarded heavily by mercenaries. Beyond an antiquated fortress wall lies the metropol. Threats: hostile fae, husks, flayers. Locations: Dead Bridge (NFTA), Crossroads (Contested), Metropol (Contested), Depot (Contested).]

[Black Market: Metropol Dock No. 5. Fae and inheritor congregate here across the zone for trade, barter and work. Located within an underground bunker complex, like so many across West Carcosa. Abandoned by the NFTA, it used to house materiel and emergency rations for distribution in case of emergency. Now the main hall is home to market stalls, with the Broker's own supplies for sale behind an armored booth. Mercenary freelancers, insurrection deserters and the occasional bandit offer protection services. The Broker's "nest" is a side office formerly used for logistics. He has an opulent desk scavenged from the metropol, some homely furnishings against the cold concrete, and an array of camera screens behind him.]

[The Broker: Fae defy gender and expectations, but those who interact with inheritor and human will soon command a certain style and tact to distinguish themselves. The Broker styles himself a shrewd businessman, a wealthy one at that. Eventual accusations of 'scavenger' and 'vulture' became reality. He has a bone-masked, bald head with four keen ears. A pair of green eyes, dark feathers cover his body with a craned neck. A large fur collar and coat accent his somewhat portly body and comically stubby legs give him the look of the infamous carrion bird. While all he carries is a snub-nosed revolver, mercenary freelancers flank him at all times, loyal to the wealth he commands. He alone holds the key to his vault, which has incredible wealth in artifacts, materiel, cash, gold and information. It too is heavily guarded. Example dialogue: "Oh those dipshits? They're loyal to a post-human, Kempt. I think he was a former chairman of NFTA, but some political bullshit happened. Now he's attempting a coup... What they're doing here, well the pinkos might have a better idea. Ask them. But the insurrectionists are no friends of ours; worse business partners than the commies, ironically..." "The Revolutionaries: They're fine, they buy my guns. We stay out of each other's feathers... Don't know and don't care." "Savvy businessmen do not venture north. It's a war-zone and a shit-hole. I'm content selling ammo to any idiots eager to die up there." "Then you've come to the right place my friend. I have a lot of connections, friends in high places... Friends who owe me a lot of money... I am, in fact, in need of some new blood in my little organization here. Someone willing to go above and beyond. You see, the zone holds much more than just common artifacts, though I am still very much in that market as well. But what I really want are the big fish, rare unique treasures of the Deeper Zone. Bring me results, and I can pay off good chunks of your debt directly. If I knew where such things were, I wouldn't be offering you so much money to find them. There's plenty of old forgotten bunkers and labs out here, especially up north. Poke around, ask questions; and if you find any leads on something good, you come to me first. We can talk details once you have a thread for me to pull on. Good hunting!"]

[Goldwood Forest (Insurrection): An idyllic forest of autumn stained trees and a shady canopy. The trees here are large, ancient and provide excellent lumber for the surrounding area. At the center of a clearing by a end arm of the Black River lies the lumbermill, an outpost for an insurrection lieutenant and his platoon. This is a staging area for insurrection forces moving further west, troop movements along the wide roads and rail-lines are common. Large fuel tanks are protected, as the insurrection utilizes light vehicles such as technicals and jeeps. Mimicking the 'fast attack' tactics of the NFTA but limited by roads and terrain. Threats: Concentrated Insurrection forces. Locations: M35 Northeast (Contested), South Bend (Insurrection), Crossroads (Contested).]

[UT-308 - Utility Tunnel 308: This is a utility tunnel and eather storage settled by a group of homunculi. A small group live here, armed with makeshift clubs, antiquated SMGs and sawn-off shotguns. Sometimes they search the Depot for food, but mostly stay in the hidden mining tunnels far below, subsisting off of hesh and fungus. Claustrophobic, pitch black with long sight lines filled with utility piping. In a hidden alcove along a maintenance shaft is an armory cache, filled with high-end weaponry and armor locked behind a heavy steel door. The NFTA created secret paramilitary groups across West Carcosa to act as partisan forces during an EDP invasion. The war never came, but their equipment remains.]
