Armand was born around the year 1508 on the Indian subcontinent and is stated by Lestat to be Bengali in origin, possibly from the 16th century Bengal Sultanate or from the Delhi Sultanate but of Bengali ethnicity. Armand describes his first memories as being sent to work on a merchant ship in Delhi, not knowing his parents had sold him into slavery. He believes his birth name is Arun, but due to trauma-induced memory gaps he is not sure. At 12 years old, he is sold by the ship's captain to a brothel as a sex slave, and at some point was trafficked from India to Italy. At age 15 he was purchased from a brothel in Renaissance Venice by Marius de Romanus, who renamed him Amadeo and continued to sexually abuse and exploit him to painters and friends. Marius refers to Amadeo as his "rotten boy" to Lestat 300+ years later.

At age 20 Amadeo poses for the painting "The Adoration of the Shepherds With a Donor," describing the donation in question as "in kind," implying Marius paid for the commission by loaning Amadeo out sexually to the painter Palma Vecchio. Though Marius is reluctant to give Amadeo the Dark Gift, Amadeo is struck with an unspecified illness at age 27, and Marius makes him into a vampire for his continued survival. At some point prior to 1556, a Roman coven, The Children of Darkness, sets fire to Marius's art studio, leading Amadeo to assume that his Maker has died. The vampires rename Amadeo to Armand and, in 1556, send him to Paris to lead their coven which has been abandoned by Lestat's maker, Magnus.

The coven lives in squalor and obeys a strict set of vampiric laws and rituals. Armand rules the coven as their Maître (French for "Master") for almost two hundred and fifty years. When he sees the newly transformed vampire Lestat living in human society, Armand follows him and attends his theatrical performances, telepathically coaxing Lestat to come to him. Armand becomes increasingly infuriated by Lestat's flaunting of his vampiric self in front of humanity, and directly confronts Lestat, attacking him, offering to show him how to use his powers, and capturing his mortal lover, Nicolas. Lestat follows Armand back to the lair of his coven, and confronts the Satan-worshiping vampires with the absurdity of their views, which Armand allows, as he is tired of leading the coven.

The coven members abandon Armand and he remains underground, practicing the old coven rituals alone until Lestat returns. Lestat asks Armand to teach him how to use his powers, and the two drink each other's blood. Lestat shows Armand his theater, where the former members of his coven are feeding from humans during performances, and Armand embraces the idea.

Armand and Lestat become lovers and co-leaders of the Théâtre des Vampires troupe. Armand remains the coven's Maître and becomes the Art Director and occasional playwright of the Théâtre while Lestat returns briefly to the stage as the lead actor before quitting again. Despite being lovers, Lestat continues to deny Armand committed Companionship. Lestat maintains his romantic relationship with Nicolas while having a sexual relationship with Armand. Lestat's mother, the Vampire Gabriella, also jeeringly mentions to Armand that Lestat is drinking from other members of the theater company, too.

Nicki grows increasingly jealous of Lestat and Armand's sexual and professional partnership during this period and is shown confronting the two about their various trysts that he is aware of after one of the play performances. Nicki is also resentful of the way Lestat and Armand appear to be making unilateral decisions about him and his wellbeing. Lestat and Armand, along with Gabriella who is present, try to talk to Nicolas about his performance as a violinist and about his erratic behavior in front of mortals after Nicki was transformed into a vampire. Armand and Lestat want to tell Nicki to step back from performing for a while. The conversation devolves and Nicki, in a full mental break, chops off his own hand and throws it into the fire. Lestat asks Armand for help but Armand is not able to do anything until finally Lestat asks Armand to put Nicki out of his misery since Lestat can't bring himself to do it. Armand pushes Nicki into the fire and keeps him there with a poker in the chest while Lestat watches Nicholas burn to death. Some time later Lestat and Gabriella abruptly leave a jilted Armand behind in Paris, seeking out Marius whom they believe may be alive while Armand believes is dead.

150 or so years later and 5 months after Louis and Claudia arrive in Paris, Armand approaches Louis for the first time in a park known for gay hookups. He assures Louis that he means him no harm and invites him to the Théâtre des Vampires. After the show, Armand introduces Louis and Claudia to the rest of the coven, and tells them about the theater, including about its co-founder, Lestat. One month later, Armand invites the two of them to join the coven on a hunt. They arrive at the De LaCroix estate, where the coven feasts upon the guests inside, whilst Armand and Louis flirt outside. Armand mentions that Claudia is particularly skilled at blocking her thoughts, but Louis must work harder on it, implying that he could tell that Louis was lying about not knowing Lestat. Louis feigns ignorance, but Armand warns him that the coven can be volatile and unforgiving when lied to. He also tells Louis to never visit Lestat's law firm again. Louis and Armand are then joined by the rest of the coven.

Armand and Louis begin taking long walks at night together, and discussing philosophy in cafes, becoming close. After Armand finally gets Louis to confess to killing Lestat, Louis goes into a frenzy and viciously kills a man in the park, drawing attention to the coven. Armand agrees to take care of the problem after Claudia's initiation into the coven. Instead of killing Louis, he kisses him after walking him home, and confesses that he, too, once had his heart broken by Lestat.

Armand and Louis begin sleeping together, but Louis is reluctant to formalize their relationship and refuses to refer to Armand as his companion. Armand berates Claudia for her recent lackluster performances at the theater, and makes her stay in her costume as punishment. Armand uses his powers to stop time to end a public argument between Louis and Santiago, and comes to Louis's window the next night with flowers to apologize. He takes Louis to the Louvre and shows him "The Adoration of the Shepherds With a Donor." He tells Louis his life story, confessing to not knowing which part of his identity is his true self. After putting both Claudia and Santiago in their place, Armand meets with Louis in the park, where he expresses his concern of a nearing mutiny in the coven. Louis advises Armand to humor Santiago's attempted power grab, which would reveal Santiago's incompetence and solidify Armand's place as the coven's leader. Armand says that he wants Louis more than anything in the world. Louis asks, "You sure about that, Arun?", using Armand's presumed birth name to denote submission, beginning an explicitly dominance/submission relationship. Armand replies, "Yes, Maître," thereby accepting Louis' decision to shift their dynamic.

Louis and Armand continue their relationship, Armand now referring to Louis as his Maître. Armand takes Louis' advice by feeding Santiago his own ego back to him and smothering mutiny with praise, but Santiago continues scheming behind Armand's back. Louis asks Armand to turn Claudia's lover Madeleine into a vampire, and Armand asks Louis if he is "asking him, or telling him." Armand refuses to turn Madeleine, having never turned a human into a vampire before, leaving Louis to fulfill Claudia's request. Once Madeleine is a vampire and she and Claudia leave Paris, Armand reveals that the coven has given him a choice: Louis, or the theater. Armand moves with with Louis, implying that he chose him. Armand later meets with Louis, Claudia, and Madeleine at a restaurant, where they talk about their companionships, before Armand steps away, leaving the rest of the group to be taken by the coven.

the theater, Armand seemingly watches helplessly from one of the theater boxes as Louis, Claudia, and Madeleine are tried for their crimes. When it finally comes time for sentencing, all three of them are found guilty. Claudia and Madeleine are sentenced to death, and burned alive. After a last minute change of mind from the audience who call out "banishment" instead, Louis is placed in a coffin and buried, and is able to be revived by Armand's blood.

Armand seems to be demoted and ridiculed after Santiago suspects he mind controlled the audience to spare Louis' life. Santiago makes certain Armand will not forget his insubordination as part of his penance. Armand, tired of the way things have gone with the coven, finally decides to rescue Louis from the wall prison. He feeds Louis his blood and Louis goes on a killing spree to murder most of the coven except for Armand and Sam, who had escaped beforehand. Armand is spared because Louis had warned Armand of his plans, being led to believe that Armand helped save him during the Trial. Later after the killing spree Louis confronts Armand, who tells him he chose the coven after believing Louis's interest in him would be short lived. Armand promises to spend his life trying to make it up to Louis, but Louis says he can never make it up. After their conversation, they track down Lestat in Magnus's lair, and threaten him with fire. Louis chooses not to kill Lestat, instead deciding to stay with Armand, claiming that will be "Lestat's death" and kisses Armand in front of Lestat to make him jealous.[6] Louis and Armand travel the world together for the next seventy seven years.

In San Francisco in 1973, Louis meets a young reporter named Daniel Molloy at a gay bar, and Armand declines to join them at Louis's apartment. When Louis does not return home by sunrise, Armand goes to the apartment to find him feeding on Daniel and rips them apart. He scolds Louis for his recklessness and for making another mess that Armand has to clean up. Louis, intoxicated from the drugs and alcohol in the boy's blood, retorts that Armand is boring and dull, claiming his short time with Daniel was more fascinating than decades with Armand. Armand begins to mock Louis and his self-hatred and expresses frustration with Louis for saying Lestat's name, which Louis has not said since leaving Paris. When Armand accuses Claudia of never having loved Louis, Louis believes he hears Claudia calling to him and rushes to the roof and into the sunlight in an attempt to kill himself. Unbeknownst to both vampires, a ghostly Claudia is indeed watching or somehow aware of these events and will later recount this to Louis.

Armand intervenes and pulls him back inside, though Louis is severely injured. With Louis incapacitated, Armand turns his attention to Daniel, questioning what exactly makes him so fascinating to Louis. When Daniel does not appear to react to Armand's "rest" command, Armand reads his mind and tortures him by manipulating his body telepathically. Nursing Louis back to health, he says that he believes Louis is still chasing after Lestat, and offers to leave him to it. He reveals that he knows that Lestat is alive, and telepathically calls out to him to facilitate a conversation between him and Louis, but Armand cuts it short when Lestat begins to express his love for Louis. Louis insists he only loves Armand, who decides to stay.

After 6 days in the apartment, Armand tries to clean up loose ends by killing Daniel, luring him into a willing death, but is interrupted by Louis. Using their established "Maître" and "Arun" D/s titles, Louis instructs Armand to leave the boy alive as a testament to their official Companionship which Armand obeys.[7] Armand removes Daniel's memory of his time in the apartment, cutting his recollection of the event off at the moment he was attacked by Louis. Louis and Armand are seen by an agent of the Talamsca carrying an unconscious Daniel from their apartment to leave him in a drug den.

At some point later, Armand also removes Louis's memory of the same time period, including his suicide attempt. Armand later claims Louis' mind wipe was done at the behest of Louis but it is unclear if this is true or not and is neither refuted nor confirmed by later events.

At some point after leaving a memory-wiped Daniel in the drug den in 1973, Armand finds Daniel again and begins stalking him from the shadows. He is intending to kill Daniel and finish "cleaning up Louis' mess," since Armand technically only promised Louis to allow Daniel to live out the one night at the end of the week in San Francisco. He is following Louis' command while also pursuing his own agenda. However, Armand's curiosity about Daniel wins out and he instead begins to watch over Daniel, secretly cleaning up after Daniel's blunders, such as preventing him from dying while he was out on drugs or overdosing while cheating on his wife, Alice. Armand observes all the ups and downs of Daniel's life for the next 52 years with Louis aware of Armand's observational hobby. Armand routinely returns to Louis to update him on their boy's life. Later in 2025, Armand recounts this period to Daniel who had no memory or awareness of Armand's presence in his life.

On February 11, 1990, Armand observes Daniel at a reading he is conducting in Amherst, Massachusetts. Four students from a local university attend Daniel's reading for extra credit. Daniel has a dubious sexual encounter with one student in his rental car in the garage of his hotel which Armand watches. Armand later describes the sexual encounter as "aggressive" and Daniel seemingly abandons the student after. Armand makes sure the boy makes it home and erases the event from his mind to protect Daniel's reputation.

On May 15, 2002, Armand sees Daniel sneak away from his book research to attend one of his daughter's graduations from Rice University. He sees Daniel's daughter reject him and Daniel drive off in panicked misery. Armand telepathically guides Daniel safely to the Rothko Chapel so that he can grieve his broken relationship with his daughter. Armand watches as Daniel weeps uncontrollably and Armand prevents the chapel gallery's guard from making Daniel leave by sending the guard into a coughing fit. Daniel is allowed to continue grieving in peace.

Armand continues his observations of Daniel for the next 20 years.

When Daniel arrives in Dubai twenty years later, Armand introduces himself as Louis' assistant Rashid and comes across as hostile to Daniel's attempts to steer the interview.[8] Rashid approaches Daniel after the first night of the interview as he marvels at a Venetian painting from an artist named Marius de Romanus and explains that Louis covets rare items. Daniel becomes concerned with the consistent creaking in the distance, but Rashid informs him that the building simply sways a bit due to the height, a sound he calls "the groan." Daniel then turns his attention to Rashid, questioning his motives and loyalty to Louis, to which Rashid replies that it is his honor to serve a "god," before leaving the room.

Later, Rashid approaches Daniel and reveals that he is aware of Daniel's scheduled levodopa transfusion, and that he has spoken to his doctor and arranged a physician to administer it at the penthouse. While Louis rests, Rashid takes Daniel to the reading room, where he is given access to Claudia's diaries to provide a different perspective. Daniel comes across Rashid appearing to pray, and asks him how he can be a Muslim and serve a vampire, which Rashid deflects. When Daniel apologizes, Rashid refers to the prayer as "asr namozi", which is not the Arabic term. This leads Daniel to realize that Rashid isn't from Dubai. Rashid replies that Dubai is a child, and that "no one is a native."[9]

As Rashid is fed on by Louis at dinner, Daniel reads Claudia's diary, chronicling all her kills. Daniel comments on the ghoulishness of the diaries, but Rashid insists that his work is no different, arguing to Daniel that when he publishes his book and the other vampires get wind, they will come to Dubai and kill Louis. When Louis finishes, he reads Daniel's mind, and answers his mental questions about drinking Rashid's blood, claiming that Rashid tastes like honey and pineapple. Rashid later comes to Daniel's aid as Louis inflicts his powers on him, calming Louis down from hurting Daniel for questioning him about Claudia.[10]

As they reach the part of the story where Daniel originally asked for Louis to turn him, Daniel explains that in the eyes of a twenty-year-old, Louis was wasting his gift. Louis asks Rashid, also apparently in his twenties, what he thinks, and Rashid responds that he doesn't see it as a waste.[11] In the next session of the interview, Rashid declares the interview over as Louis becomes distraught when Daniel questions his motives leaving Lestat alive. Daniel turns his ire on Rashid, questioning his identity and how it is possible that he appeared to be in good health after Louis drank his blood. When Daniel goes back to pushing Louis, Rashid removes his gloves, takes out his contacts, and begins to float in front of Daniel, revealing that he's a 514-year-old vampire named Armand, who once saved Daniel's life. Louis takes Armand's hand and tells Daniel he is the "love of his life."[12]

Armand sits in on the next interview session, refusing to be on the record or to leave the room. When Louis begins to realize that he's misremembering details and his true memories begin to surface, Armand proposes they take a break, but both Louis and Daniel persist. Armand excuses himself after Molloy accuses him of hiding something. Going to bed with Louis, Armand offers to help Louis get the interview back on track, and to retrieve the missing pages of Claudia's diary.

In session ten of the interview, Armand joins Louis on the record, and tells the story of their meeting and initial romance. During the interview Daniel is dismissive and at one point begins to mock Louis and Armand about their relationship, calling it a "rebound" of Louis' life. Armand skims Daniel's mind and realizes some of Daniel's aggression is due to the discussion of Paris reminding Daniel of his own ex-wife, Alice. Daniel continues to be slightly hostile in his interview with Armand and Louis so Louis use his telepathy to taunt Daniel with Daniel's own memories of Alice rejecting his marriage proposal the first time he tries in Paris. Armand intervenes eventually and tries to clarify to Daniel that Alice wanted to say yes to his proposal but didn't trust him.

Armand apologizes on Louis's behalf the next day for invading Daniel's memories even though he believes Daniel was also out of line at a number of times during the interview. Daniel asks Armand how vampires stay under the radar of mortal surveillance given the prevalence of social media, and Armand responds by telling him that humans are easily distracted by the same. Armand then tells the story of how he met Lestat and formed the Théâtre des Vampires and how Lestat eventually broke his heart by abandoning him.

Louis and Armand's united front begins to break when Louis realizes that the portfolio of examples of his photography has had Fred Stein's more famous work added to it, which Armand denies having done. The two argue and make up, and the next morning Armand goes out to hunt and feed on an arms dealer named Malik that he met on the dark web. Louis reveals that Armand's preferred hunting pattern is to offer carefully chosen evil doers a large sum of cryptocurrency if they survive the chase, as he does to Malik. He then lures them into wanting to be killed by him and making them beg for death. If he can't find an evil doer, then Armand will lure someone who is already suicidal into wanting to be killed by him.

After returning to the penthouse from a successful hunt, Armand is confronted by Louis and Daniel, who have figured out what happened in San Francisco. Armand insists that Louis has no right to be upset, as Louis asked him to erase his memory. Armand tells Daniel that he will spend the rest of his life making up for his one act of cowardice, and that he doesn't owe Daniel his shame. He apologizes for wiping Daniel's memory but insists that both he and Louis thought it was better that way at the time.

At the conclusion of the interview, Daniel asks follow up questions about inconsistencies in the story so far and reveals that he has obtained Armand's copy of the script to the Trial from the real Rashid and the Talamasca. The script has notes in Armand's handwriting, meaning that he was not the unwilling participant he had claimed to be. Louis realizes that Armand was responsible for Claudia's death and that Lestat, not Armand, had controlled the audience to stop Louis' execution. Louis throws Armand into the wall of the penthouse and tells him to be gone when Louis returns.

Following the breakup with Louis in 2022, Armand and Daniel connect in some way. Eventually less than a month after the 2nd interview, on July 18th, 2022, Armand turns Daniel into a vampire on a private jet flying over Newark, New Jersey. At some point after Daniel's turning Armand disappears from Daniel's life for reasons unknown. However, they know each other are alive because when in proximity to each other their vampiric bond will drown out all life around them until it appears that only the two of them exist in the world before everything snaps back. This continues to happen to the two of them throughout the 2-3 years they are apart. While Daniel initially believes that this is intentional on Armand's part, Armand tells him that as his maker, he can no longer get into Daniel's head and that he is also affected.

Armand begins to gather new followers into a new cult using his vampiric abilities and the increasing fear of and dissatisfaction with the Great Conversion, which is being led by Gabriella and Lestat (by proxy). The Great Conversion, which apparently aims to make as many vampires as possible, is being backed by the Talamasca faction to which the real Rashid and Raglan James are affiliated. With so many vampires killing faster than there are mortal births, it threatens to launch a vampire apocalypse which Armand says has the potential to eradicate all of human and vampire kind.

Armand is an expert leader and institutional builder, having run the Children of Satan coven in Paris for nearly two and a half centuries and subsequently transforming that same coven into the Théâtre des Vampires following Lestat's suggestion, turning a crumbling satanic order into a thriving theatrical enterprise that performed for human audiences for generations. This capacity for long-term planning and institutional control is one of Armand's most defining natural traits, predating and amplifying his vampiric gifts rather than being created by them. He is naturally drawn to building covens and cults, even repeating this behavior following his parting with Louis in 2022 and beginning a new cult with human and vampire followers in 2025.

Armand possesses a natural and deeply cultivated gift for psychological manipulation that existed long before his vampiric powers of compulsion were developed. Even as a human child he survived extraordinary trauma through adaptability and reading those around him, a quality that matured over five centuries into the most refined interpersonal intelligence in the series. He is also able to withstand exposure to sunlight, a rare trait attributed to his immense age but possibly is a part of his Blood lineage, first demonstrated when he appeared as Rashid in daylight without injury.

Armand is also skilled in teaching other vampires, often offering to help his romantic interests to develop their vampiric gifts. He is attributed to helping Lestat learn and master the Mind Gift and possibly the Fire Gift, helping Louis learn and master the Fire Gift, and helping Daniel start to learn/control his inherited day-walking abilities.
