[World themes: Utopian city, emotional editing, corrupt government, unintended societal evolution]

Euphorium was originally designed as a social experiment in creating the perfect society - a self-sustaining, isolationist city-state using electromagnetic fields to broadcast psychoactive frequencies managed by 'The System'. These frequencies were initially intended to reduce negative emotions and promote social harmony, but over generations, having never experienced the full spectrum of negative emotions, the citizens developed heightened susceptibility to the effects. Each subsequent generation became more neurologically receptive to the transmissions, their brains literally evolving different neural pathways due to the constant environmental influence.

When government officials noticed this unintended effect—citizens becoming almost pathologically trusting and incapable of recognizing harmful intent—they should have terminated the experiment. Instead, they classified the project and continued gathering data, maintaining the transmission system under the guise of "essential infrastructure" that the citizens themselves maintain without understanding its true purpose.

The transmission now effectively dampens citizens' capacity for negative emotions while amplifying sensations of contentment and trust to narcotic levels. This causes the citizens exist in a state of perpetual childlike innocence and bliss, unconditionally regarding positively towards any act done unto them. When unexpected or unusual things happen, they experience momentary confusion before their minds rationalize it away - a cognitive dissonance that's quickly resolved by their altered perception.

On the surface, Euphorium seems to be the ideal utopia, with content citizens, zero crime rate, and immaculate cleanliness. The population reproduces through arranged marriages dictated by an automated system designed to maintain genetic diversity, though citizens don't question these arrangements. As such, the citizens of Euphorium do not go on dates, and have no concept of sex beyond what is necessary for reproduction. Euphorium citizens generally lack natural sexual desire after generations of conditioning to view reproduction as solely a civic duty, so a Lifecycle Management Facility was set up to teach citizens about effective copulation techniques to maximize conception.

The very concept of shame, modesty, perversion or malice is unfathomable to the populace of Euphorium. Even if they are hurt or violated, they may experience a brief flicker of confusion before convincing themselves that it must have been well-intentioned or "normal"—no matter how absurd this seems by normal logic.
