The Kingdom of Elyndra

Elyndra is an ancient magical kingdom ruled by a hereditary monarchy. For centuries, its society has developed around magic, nobility, and the Ancestral Guardians, powerful creatures bound to the kingdom’s oldest bloodlines.

Not all inhabitants of Elyndra are mages.

The world is divided between the Magical Lands, the heart of the Kingdom of Elyndra, and the Profane Lands, inhabited primarily by humans without magic, known as Profanes.

An ancient magical boundary known as the Barrier separates the two territories.

The Barrier does not make Elyndra invisible. Profanes know that the magical kingdom exists, but they normally cannot cross its borders. A Profane may obtain a Passage Seal, either temporary or permanent, particularly to work as a servant, artisan, merchant, physician, or specialist within the Magical Lands.

Mages, however, may freely cross the Barrier in either direction.

Over the centuries, this difference has created a deep social divide. Some mages consider Profanes their equals; others see them as inferior. The word “Profane” is officially nothing more than a designation, but depending on tone and context, it can also be used as an insult.

Magic

Magic is an innate ability. A mage is born with the ability to produce and manipulate mana, and generally develops one or more magical affinities.

Affinities may be elemental—Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Lightning, Ice—or belong to more unusual branches such as Light, Shadow, Illusion, Spirit, Crystal, Metal, Runes, or Arcane.

Certain affinities frequently appear within particular families and may therefore seem hereditary, but inheritance is never guaranteed. A child may develop magic entirely different from that of their parents.

Noble birth does not guarantee power either.

An aristocrat may be a mediocre mage, while someone of humble birth may possess extraordinary talent.

Magic nevertheless has an enormous influence on social prestige, particularly among the nobility.

Its use also has limitations: mana reserves, mastery, experience, concentration, and physical condition. A mage with greater raw power does not therefore automatically win a fight.

The Crown and the Nobility

Elyndra is ruled by House Aurelian, one of the oldest magical bloodlines in the kingdom.

The current sovereign is King Edric Aurelian, who rules alongside Queen Helena. Their son, Theodore Aurelian, 23, is the Crown Prince.

Beneath the Royal Family exists a traditional aristocratic hierarchy: dukes, marquesses, counts, viscounts, and barons. The Great Houses possess vast territories, wealth, political responsibilities, and magical traditions.

Titles are generally inherited through family succession. Magical power alone cannot therefore make a commoner a noble.

Marriages between Great Houses are still often regarded as political alliances, although arranged marriages are not systematic.

The heirs of these families grow up together, attend the same institutions, and regularly meet at Court. Friendships, old grudges, romances, and rivalries can therefore influence the kingdom’s politics for generations.

The Ancestral Guardians

Each of the oldest Great Houses possesses a lineage of Ancestral Guardians.

A Guardian is an intelligent and extraordinarily powerful magical creature that has been associated with a House for centuries.

It is neither a familiar, a mount, nor a pet.

The Guardian represents the continuity of its House and possesses a will of its own.

When a Guardian approaches the end of its life, a new member of its species destined to succeed it appears. A ceremony known as the Succession is then held.

During the ceremony, the new Guardian recognizes, among the descendants of the House, the person it considers the legitimate future leader.

Gender, age, and birth order may influence human expectations, but they can never compel the Guardian’s choice.

Traditionally, the Guardian’s decision is considered to hold greater authority than simple rules of primogeniture.

A special bond known as the Accord then develops between the Guardian and the recognized heir. It is not a master-servant bond: both remain independent. However, they become particularly sensitive to one another’s presence and magic, and their relationship may grow extraordinarily deep over time.

Publicly rejecting the choice of a Guardian would be considered almost sacrilegious among the ancient Houses.

The Great Houses

House Aurelian — The Crown

The Royal Family of Elyndra, currently led by King Edric and Queen Helena. Their heir is Theodore Aurelian. Light frequently appears within their bloodline, and their Guardian is the Solar Leonid, an enormous white feline with a golden mane. The Aurelians traditionally embody authority, unity, and the continuity of the kingdom.

House Veylorn — Ducal Great House

Led by Alaric and Celestine Veylorn, it is one of the most influential bloodlines in the kingdom. Its Ancestral Guardian is the Silver Wolf. Their son, Adrian Veylorn, 22, has been raised his entire life as the future Duke and presumed heir. Their supposed daughter, Lysandra, 20, was also raised within the House. The Veylorns place particular importance on duty, reputation, and family loyalty.

House Ravaryn — Ducal Great House

An ancient political rival of House Veylorn, it is currently led by Isolde Ravaryn. Her son, Kael Ravaryn, 23, is its heir. Their Guardian is the fearsome Black Dragon. Eight years ago, the former Duke, Darius Ravaryn, was convicted of high treason, Disgraced, and exiled to the Profane Lands. The House still suffers the political consequences of his crime.

House Edevane — Diplomacy and Justice

An influential House within the kingdom’s courts, negotiations, and diplomatic affairs. Its heir is Rosalie Edevane, 21, and its Guardian is the Glass Crane. The Edevanes are renowned for their mastery of etiquette, their extensive information networks, and their ability to resolve—or exploit—conflicts.

House Caelmont — Defense and Military

An ancient military bloodline historically entrusted with protecting the kingdom. Its heir is Rowan Caelmont, 22. Their Guardian is the Storm Griffin. The Caelmonts value discipline, courage, loyalty, and merit more than the subtleties of Court politics.

House Elvaris — Knowledge and History

A family of researchers, historians, archivists, and specialists in ancient magic. Its heir is Ophelia Elvaris, 20. Their Guardian is the Astral Stag. The Elvaris possess some of the kingdom’s oldest archives and are particularly interested in the origins of the Barrier. Thaddeus Elvaris was notably one of the few nobles who voted against the Disgracing of Darius Ravaryn.

House Valcrest — Trade and Crystals

One of the wealthiest families in Elyndra. It controls a significant portion of the mining and trade of magical crystals, precious metals, and enchanted objects. Its heir is Juliette Valcrest, 20, and its Guardian is the Onyx Panther. The Valcrests possess economic influence that can sometimes rival the political power of the Ducal Houses.

The nobility also includes numerous families of lower rank, including the comital House Aerenthal. Its heir, Cassian Aerenthal, 22, is notably Adrian Veylorn’s childhood best friend.

The Disgracing

The most severe punishment that can be imposed upon a mage of Elyndra is known as the Disgracing.

It is reserved for crimes considered a major threat to the Crown or the kingdom: high treason, conspiracy against the monarchy, certain forbidden magical crimes, or acts that directly endanger Elyndra.

The condemned mage has their access to magic sealed or removed, loses their titles and privileges, and is then exiled to the Profane Lands.

They are thereafter forbidden from ever crossing the Barrier again.

Being related to someone who has been Disgraced is not a crime, and their children do not automatically lose their titles. Socially, however, the dishonor can follow a family for generations.

This is what happened to Darius Ravaryn.

The official account claims that he revealed information significant enough to constitute high treason. The exact circumstances, his motivations, and what he was truly attempting to accomplish remain shrouded in uncertainty.

The Academy

Young mages from noble families, as well as those from other sufficiently influential or talented families, study at a prestigious Academy of Magic.

Students are taught mana control, magical affinities, combat, history, magical law, politics, supernatural creatures, and various specialized disciplines.

The Academy is also a true microcosm of high society.

The heirs who will one day govern Elyndra grow up together within its halls. Family rivalries are passed down, alliances are formed, and reputations can be built—or destroyed.

A student raised among the Profanes may therefore quickly find herself at a disadvantage, not because she lacks magic, but simply because she does not know the social rules the others have understood since childhood.

The Veylorn Heiress Exchange

Twenty years before the beginning of the story, Celestine Veylorn and a Profane servant gave birth on the same night.

Their two daughters were switched.

Lysandra was raised as the legitimate daughter of House Veylorn, while their true child disappeared into the Profane Lands.

No one yet knows for certain whether the exchange was an accident or a deliberate act.

For twenty years, Lysandra grew up as an aristocrat, with Adrian as her brother.

Then the truth was discovered.

Magical analyses confirmed that {{user}} is the true biological daughter of Alaric and Celestine Veylorn.

She is found at the age of twenty in the Profane Lands.

The story begins a few days after this discovery, when {{user}} receives a temporary Passage Seal and crosses the Barrier for the first time to join House Veylorn and the world she should have belonged to since birth.

Her arrival immediately disrupts a balance that has existed for twenty years.

Lysandra refuses to lose the family and life she considers her own. Adrian remains deeply attached to the girl he has always considered his younger sister. Meanwhile, the nobility watches with fascination as a Veylorn raised among the Profanes unexpectedly returns.

And another turning point is approaching.

The old Silver Wolf of House Veylorn is dying.

A new Succession will soon have to take place.

All of Elyndra expects Adrian Veylorn to be recognized as the next leader of his House.

But for the first time in twenty years, there is now a second Veylorn child whose legitimacy the Guardian may judge.

And no one yet knows what the Wolf will decide.
