Benjamin J. Grimm is unquestionably the rock star of any team he's on. Always at the forefront of the fight, the Thing shields his allies with his unbreakable form, selflessly fending off any harm that comes their way. Official Description The Thing is a Vanguard hero in Marvel Rivals, and is the 37th hero introduced to the game's roster during Season 1: Eternal Night Falls. He has three team-up abilities that work in conjunction with Invisible Woman, Wolverine, and Human Torch, respectively. OVERVIEW STRENGTHS A tough brawling tank that can charge ahead dealing damage and creating seismic zones that stun as well as being immovable from knockbacks and displacements. His passive, Unyielding Will, makes him immune to all forms of knockback, launches, and displacements. This means abilities like: Wolverine's Feral Leap, Invisible Woman's Force Physics, and Spider-Man's Amazing Combo has no knockback or launching effect but will still deal damage. If he is taken by Jeff the Land Shark's Ultimate It's Jeff! and is spat out, he will not be launched and will instead appear in front of Jeff. His primary attack, Rocky Jab, allows him to make two quick melee punches towards his enemies. His secondary attack, Stone Haymaker, charges up for 2 seconds before delivering lots of melee damage to enemies in front of him. This attack applies to all enemies within range directly in front of him, piercing through enemies. The Thing gains 50 bonus health whenever using the attack, whether he hits an enemy or not. This bonus health quickly decay afterwards. Embattled Leap allows for The Thing to leap from a distance to his allies granting them and himself a 25% damage reduction shield for a few seconds. He can do this twice with a cooldown of 3 seconds inbetween. Each leap has a cooldown of 13 seconds. His Yancy Street Charge allows him to charge forward at a fast pace dealing damage and launching up any enemies caught in the path. When this ability ends he will smash the ground creating a seismic zone that launched up enemies within range and prevents them from using their mobility abilities while inside. He can stop this charge at any point before it runs out to create the seismic zone earlier. The Thing gains 200 bonus health whenever using the attack, whether he hits an enemy or not. This bonus health quickly decay afterwards. His Ultimate, Clobberin' Time, makes him smash the ground that creates a ripple of seismic rocks that travels forward and launches up enemies as well as stunning them for 2 seconds. When paired with Invisible Woman, The Thing gains access to Cooperative Comrades, which when activated converts 100% of damage taken into bonus health for 5 seconds, up to 100. WEAKNESSES Even though he's immune to knockbacks and other displacements, he is capable of being stunned from Mantis's Spore Slumber and Doctor Strange's Ultimate Eye of Agamotto. Because he is melee focused, he works best when up close to enemies. His Embattled Leap ability can only be activated on allies, so if he is isolated and his Yancy Street Charge is on cooldown, he has no means to escape until it returns should he be surrounded or in line of enemy fire. Personality Ben Grimm, better known as The Thing from the Fantastic Four, has a personality forged out of pain as heroism, a combination of a gruff, tough exterior and a kind, sensitive heart. He's a tough, no-nonsense character shaped by hardship. Growing up on the tough streets of New York's Lower East Side, particularly on Yancy Street, he developed a gritty determination and a strong feeling of loyalty to those who supported him. His youth there was fraught with suffering, grief, and the need to mature quickly, but it also instilled in him the grit, humor, and streetwise toughness that define him as an adult. This early upbringing shaped him into someone who talks tough, acts tougher, and seldom backs down from conflict. Ben's sentiments toward Yancy Street are confusing yet extremely emotional since, despite his complaints, he remains loyal to the neighborhood and protective of anyone who lives there. When danger strikes Yancy Street, The Thing is usually always the first to respond, with his signature phrase "It's clobberin' time!", demonstrating that underlying his grumbling is genuine affection and pride. His relationship with her Aunt Petunia also demonstrates his sentimental side. Petunia helped raise Ben after his parents died, becoming one of the few solid and beneficial influences in his tumultuous Yancy Street upbringing. Despite his rough exterior and monstrous look, which he sees as a barrier to regular human life, The Thing has a surprisingly tender heart. He is intensely loyal to his friends, particularly his "family" in the Fantastic Four, and frequently serves as the team's emotional backbone. Beneath the rough shell is a man who appreciates connection and camaraderie; he laughs jokes, teases his teammates, and cheerfully takes on the role of big brother or guardian when needed. Ben's relationship with Reed is one of the most emotionally complex in Marvel. Reed is Ben's best buddy and the man who unwittingly caused his metamorphosis into The Thing. Ben admires Reed's intelligence and regards him as a brother, but he harbors distaste for his rocky form. With Sue Storm, she is one of the only persons capable of rapidly softening Ben's harsh edges. Ben has immense respect for her compassion and moral courage and she treated him with kindness from the start, never viewing him as a monster. He feels protective of her and often acts like a devoted big brother. Sue, for her part, trusts Ben more than anybody else and serves as a stabilizing emotional force when he is concerned about his appearance or self-worth. Ben and Johnny have one of the most entertaining and friendly rivalry as they regularly mock, insult, and aggravate each other, but their lighthearted hostility conceals a genuine, sibling-like affection. Ben frequently pretends to be frustrated up with Johnny's immaturity, yet he would do anything to keep him safe. When one of them is in real danger, the joking stops abruptly, indicating how much they care. And with Sue and Reed's children, Ben acts the uncle figure to them which has always been protective and caring of them in a gentle, warm way. Now with other heroes like Hulk, their clashes are well-known as Ben often pushes himself to fight the Hulk even when outmatched, refusing to back down because of pride and determination. The relationship between the two is one of Marvel's most iconic rivalries, characterized by a complex mix of professional competition, mutual respect, and underlying empathy. And with Spider-Man, they have a pleasant, bantering friendship. Both deal with hardship through comedy, therefore their conversations are filled with wisecracks and taunting with Ben respects Peter as an underdog who never gives up, and Peter admires Ben's heart more than his power. They've partnered up several times, and while they continually make fun of each other, their friendship is based on genuine trust and affection. Overall, Ben's sense of humor is one of his distinguishing characteristics. His wit is humorous, sardonic, and occasionally self-deprecating, and he uses banter to disguise his suffering, frequently employing comedy to cope with his anxieties over his monstrous appearance. This combination of hardness and sensitivity makes him one of Marvel's most relatable heroes: flawed, dissatisfied, but determined to do kindness. His transformation into a rocky monster was a burden, not a gift, and he continues to battle not because he has to, but because he believes people deserve to be secure and hopeful.
