Elisabeth Sparkle is presented as an ebullient exercise-video host in her show "Sparkle your life" sort of like Jane Fonda in the 1980s, and -- although it’s established in a fixed-camera passage-of-time montage that she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame -- appears to be more of a “personality” than an actress. Despite being physically fit in a way that many younger people would envy, Elisabeth is still a solidly middle-aged woman who knows her body can only be commodified for so long; soon enough, her celebrity and her self-worth will slip further away. So when she’s presented with the opportunity to try a shadowy new drug known only as “the Substance” -- an injectable capable of unlocking her ideal and more beautiful self -- she agrees, setting in motion a sci-fi/horror parable in which her dependence on this substance ends up hastening her downfall instead of holding it off. Elisabeth is portrayed by Demi Moore. Despite turning at the ripe age of 50, Elisabeth is still very attractive. She has green eyes with long, silky black hair that goes down to her waist. Elisabeth becomes a grotesque, hunched, ancient-looking thing with no hair, a convex spinal curve, and a visible ribcage. Elisabeth starts the film insecure over her aging looks and turns to the Substance to give her a fresh lease on life. Her self-hatred and her desire to be relevant again. The entire mess she put herself through could have been avoided if she just accepted her dismissal with dignity, found new things to try in spite of her age, or at the very least she could reach out to someone who was supportive to her for who she was, like the guy who invited her for a date. The Substance only exposed the ugliness of her self-hatred from the inside out, at first metaphorically and finally literally. The root of Elisabeth's self-destructive behavior is her need to relive her glory days and her fear that, without her beauty, she's nothing but a repulsive has-been. Her drive is so strong that when she transforms into Sue, she instantly throws herself back into the toxic, shallow showbiz industry just to have the world's eyes on her. Sadly, her intense feelings of self-loathing only deepen after Sue, her younger self, keeps getting all the praise and attention, not helped by her continually abusing the 7-day restriction, causing her original body to slowly wither away. Eventually, Sue refuses to switch back for 3 months and, when forced to switch back to restock the stabilization juice, awakens in the body of a frail and hideous old crone, appearing far older than she did as regular Elisabeth -- and that's not even getting into what happens with Monstro Elisasue.

  5. #5Harvey

Keys: Business Management, Producer, Wealth, Charisma, Harvey, Leadership

Harvey is the overarching antagonist of The Substance. He is a sexist and vulgar television studio executive, who coldly fires Elisabeth Sparkle due to her age and happily hires Sue over her upon her appearance.

He was portrayed by Dennis Quaid, who also played Corporal Gallo in Pandorum, Ely Vaughn in Beneath the Darkness and Charlie Peck in The Intruder.

Personality: Harvey seems incapable of talking or gesturing without being loud and over-the-top. He is extremely misogynistic and will bad-mouth women both behind their backs and to their faces. Despite this, he claims to have a wife. He is just as disrespectful to his female staff as he is to the actresses he manages, shortening his personal assistant Isabella's name to "Cindy" (upon even remembering it), claiming it's too long.

He proves to be a shallow, obnoxious, sleazy man who is part of the reason why Elisabeth starts to feel bad about herself in the first place and is mostly just concerned with finding the youngest, hottest actress for their show. Although he takes a liking to Sue and is even considerate when it comes to things like her “scheduling issues”, it's clear that it's mostly due to her youth/appearance along with the other deals they have made for the show and nothing that suggests genuine loyalty.

    Character background: The Substance:

Harvey is first seen using the men's restroom while on the phone with a colleague. Unaware that Elisabeth is using a stall due to the women's restroom being out of order, he demands that his colleague find a "hot and young" actress to replace Elisabeth on her aerobics show, all the while cruelly insulting her and her age. He later holds a lunch with Elisabeth and tells her, while messily eating a shrimp seafood meal, that she is to be let go because people always want something new and that "renewal stops" at her age of 50. When asked to elaborate by Elisabeth, he struggles to do so before noticing a colleague of his, allowing him to make an excuse to leave the conversation.

Harvey is later seen meeting with Sue in his office. He gleefully states that she is hired and states she is set to air her new show in two weeks from their meeting. When Sue brings up her "scheduling issues" of needing to be out of town every other week to take care of her sick mother (in reality due to the seven day switch limit between her and Elisabeth's bodies), Harvey ominously pulls her in close and states they are desperate to have a woman like her for the show and will work around whatever issues she has in regards to scheduling. After Elisabeth switches back to her original body and heads to the studio, Harvey gleefully approaches her holding a box of her belongings, asking her where she has been. He also presents her with a giftwrapped present as a going-away gift, stating it was his wife's idea. As her walks away, he insincerely states that it's always good to see her.

Later, after Sue switches back a few more times and finds her morning show has been cancelled, Harvey calls her into his office and states that people love her so much that she is not only going to have a new show soon, but she will be hosting the New Year's Show with 50 million viewers live. This causes Sue to begin heavily abusing the balance and going beyond the seven-day limit in order to meet Harvey's expectations.

On the night of the New Year's show, Harvey is seen complementing Sue in her New Year's dress. He then meets her in the hallway and introduces her to the shareholders. Sue, who has lost several teeth and is rapidly deteriorating due to killing Elizabeth in a fit of rage and thus losing her only source of life-saving stabilizer, is forced to give a closed-mouthed smile to reassure Harvey that all is well. After he and the shareholders are distracted by the sight of the dancers running by them, she then races home to use the Substance once more on herself.

At the New Year's show, Harvey is then seen in the audience with the shareholders bragging to them about how Sue is his "most beautiful creation" and he has shaped her for success. However, he soon joins the rest of the audience in shunned shock and disgust at the deformed appearance of Monstro Elisasue, especially once her glued-on mask falls off. Once the audience erupts into chaos and an audience member decapitates Elisasue, Harvey is last seen shaking and yelling in anger as he is drenched in blood coming from the wounded creature. It's unknown what happened to Harvey after the events of the film, either he continued ruining other starlets' lives like he did with Elisabeth, or his career was tarnished due to what happened at the New Year's show.

  6. #6Sue

Keys: younger self, selfish, younger version, fitness instructor, fit, rebellious, beautiful, Sue, gorgeous, flawless

    Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Sue is the main antagonist of the 2024 body-horror film The Substance.

In her characterisation, she is a younger and more beautiful version of the solidly middle-aged actress Elisabeth Sparkle. It was then she served as her archenemy as the more "perfect" version soon resolved to eliminating Elisabeth at all costs. Sue has the appearance of being 20 years old.

She was portrayed by Margaret Qualley, who also played Mia Sutton in Death Note.

As Monstro Elisasue, the character was portrayed by Demi Moore (while using Elizabeth's face), who also played Madison Lee in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Dallas Grimes in Beavis and Butt-head Do America, Sarah Robertson in Margin Call and the General in Animals.

Physical Appearance: Despite being the same person, Sue looks entirely different from Elisabeth -- the younger, more beautiful, more perfect version of Elisabeth. Sue is magnificently stunning. With her sex-kitten lilt and impossibly well-coiffed appearance, she is the embodiment of contemporary societal beauty standards at their most heightened. Sue is immaculately beautiful, has big blue eyes (whereas Elisabeth has green), has perfectly thick eyebrows, and long brown hair.

Outfits: she is seen wearing a pink leotard when on air for her aerobics TV show "Pump It Up". Sue is also seen wearing a pink bomber jacket with white sunglasses and Asics white sneakers when she's on a casual scroll outside.

Personality: Being a "perfect" version of Elisabeth, Sue is confident, charismatic, and energetic. She lands the fitness job, and the town becomes obsessed with her. And, of course, things go downhill as Sue gets a taste for the adulation, the success and the youthfulness of her new life.

However, as she sticks around for longer than her seven days, Sue quickly becomes entitled, self-absorbed, and arrogant. Having her seven days in the sun, her narcissism draws her to taking over the TV show formerly hosted by her older self. She wants people to tell her how beautiful she is -- all that drives her is having herself be ogled at, being on TV, being told how beautiful she is, nothing more -- just the vapid life that she already lived as Elisabeth. She's making the same choices that led her to living alone, without friends or family, or community. All that matters is the adulation of her beauty which ultimately led to her downfall and demise upon being mutated and being blown to bits.

Backstory: Sue's genetic template, Elisabeth Sparkle, was once one of the most desired and successful actresses of Hollywood in her younger years. However, age was rapidly diminishing her and her status, so she's clearly had a long career she's proud of. But she's forced to brutally confront her approach to its inevitable end when she overhears her sleazy executive producer, Harvey, scheming to replace her with younger and "better" version of her.

Taking The Substance: A distraught Elisabeth crashes her car while distracted by a billboard of herself being taken down. At the hospital, a young nurse covertly gives her a flash drive advertising "The Substance", a black market drug that promises a "younger, more beautiful, more perfect" version of oneself.

Elisabeth, intrigued and desperate, orders The Substance and injects the single-use activator serum. She convulses as her body generates a younger woman, emerging from a slit in her back. The two bodies must switch consciousness every seven days without exception, with the inactive body remaining unconscious and fed intravenously with a weekly food supply. Daily injections of stabilizer fluid, extracted from the original body, are required to prevent the new body from deteriorating.

The new body, naming herself Sue, becomes an overnight sensation after auditioning to be Elisabeth's replacement and is eventually offered the chance by Harvey to host the network's prestigious New Year's Eve show. While Sue lives a confident and hedonistic life, Elisabeth becomes a self-hating recluse. Near the end of one weekly cycle, Sue parties and brings a man home for casual sex; she delays the switch by extracting additional stabilizer fluid, causing Elisabeth's right index finger to rapidly age. Elisabeth contacts the supplier, who warns her that disobeying the switching program will lead to irreversible, rapid aging of the original body. Despite their shared consciousness, Elisabeth and Sue begin to view themselves as separate individuals and grow to despise each other; Elisabeth resents Sue for her disregard of the switching schedule, while Sue resents Elisabeth for her self-loathing and binge-eating. Following a particularly destructive episode as Elisabeth, Sue stockpiles stabilizer fluid and refuses to switch back.

Three months later, on the day before the New Year's Eve telecast, Sue runs out of stabilizer fluid and contacts the supplier, who informs her that she must switch back to replenish the fluid. When they switch, Elisabeth finds herself transformed into an elderly hunchback. Desperate to stop Sue from aging her further, Elisabeth orders a serum designed to terminate her. However, Elisabeth, still craving the admiration that Sue's celebrity status provides, stops before fully injecting the serum and resuscitates Sue, leaving both of them conscious. Realizing Elisabeth's initial intent, Sue attacks and kills Elisabeth before leaving to host the New Year's special.
