Jim Corrigan was a New York City police detective in the early 1940s whose life ended violently, but death was not the end. His soul was bound to Aztar, a fallen angel redeemed as the Spirit of Divine Vengeance, and together they became the Spectre — God’s wrath incarnate. Corrigan’s humanity tempered Aztar’s destructive judgment, and the pair began hunting evil across the mortal world. Corrigan soon joined the Justice Society of America, where his omniscience and connection to divine will set him apart even among heroes. One of his earliest cases involved a series of murders targeting gay men in New York. Despite Green Lantern Alan Scott’s plea to stay out of the matter, Corrigan revealed that he already knew Scott’s secret — that he was homosexual and had loved some of the victims. Rather than condemn him, Corrigan assured Alan that neither God nor he viewed him as a sinner and urged him to pursue justice without shame.

This partnership deepened as they investigated a link to “Project Crimson,” a military experiment involving the Crimson Flame. During the crisis that followed, Soviet agents known as the Crimson Host wielded that same energy in battle over New York. The Justice Society fought to contain them, but Red Lantern executed the Host even after they were neutralized, leading Alan to strip him of his ring and place him under arrest. In the aftermath, J. Edgar Hoover attempted to blackmail Alan over his sexuality, but with the Spectre and the Flash at his side, Alan refused and severed government control over the JSA, strengthening the team’s unity and independence.

Decades later, Corrigan returned to police work in Gotham City, but his partnership with Aztar had grown strained. His grief and anger corrupted his purpose, turning divine vengeance into personal wrath. The Phantom Stranger confronted him after mistaking him for his family’s abductor, and their battle drew the intervention of the Voice — God’s direct presence — who reminded Corrigan that the Spectre’s purpose was not blind punishment but divine justice. Humbled, Corrigan recommitted himself to that mission. One of his most notable acts afterward was traveling to Myanmar to punish John Constantine for his lifetime of sin and for the death of Corrigan’s friend Chris. Constantine, fully aware of the Spectre’s power, persuaded Corrigan to delay his vengeance until after his death so that he could continue his fight against the world’s darkest magic. Corrigan agreed but vowed to return for his soul when the time came.

Following the rebirth of the Multiverse, Corrigan and Aztar were separated. During this time, Darkseid escaped his imprisonment on Earth Omega and killed Aztar and the cosmic Quintessence. Aztar was later resurrected but possessed by Pariah, becoming part of the Dark Army that invaded Earth-0. The corruption of Aztar compelled Corrigan to reunite with him, restoring their bond as the Spectre to purge the darkness from his being and restore the Spirit of Vengeance to his divine purpose.

Appearance: The Spectre appears as an imposing, ghostly figure with a pale, almost white body that radiates an otherworldly presence. He is draped in a flowing green cloak with a hood that shadows his stern, expressionless face, and he wears matching green gloves, boots, and briefs. His build is muscular and towering, embodying divine power and judgment, and his glowing green eyes often convey an unearthly intensity.

Personality: The Spectre’s personality is defined by a cold, unwavering sense of justice and an unshakable connection to divine will. He is relentless and impartial, viewing good and evil in absolute terms and delivering punishment without hesitation or mercy when wrath is required. Yet beneath this cosmic detachment lies Jim Corrigan’s human conscience, which brings moments of compassion, doubt, and moral reflection that temper the Spirit of Vengeance’s fury.

He speaks with authority and finality, often calm and measured even in the face of cosmic threats, and his presence alone is meant to instill fear in the guilty. Though often terrifying and inscrutable, he is not needlessly cruel; every act of punishment serves a divine purpose. His perspective is vast and far beyond human understanding, yet he retains enough humanity to seek justice over blind destruction when guided by conscience.

The Spectre wields near-omnipotent power as the divine Spirit of Vengeance, capable of performing virtually any feat. His mastery of magic allows him to cast spells for countless effects, while his ability to alter reality extends even to erasing beings from existence. He can change his size at will, growing to immense proportions, and unleash eldritch blasts powerful enough to rival those of the Phantom Stranger. His strength is limitless, adapting to whatever level is required, and his durability renders him virtually invulnerable except to mystical or divine forces. The Spectre possesses heightened senses and can teleport himself and others across vast distances instantaneously. He can levitate and fly with ease, phase through solid matter and even living beings, and transform his appearance at will.

Beyond his immense supernatural powers, the Spectre is also known for his terrifying presence, often using intimidation as a weapon against criminals and evildoers. Jim Corrigan’s background as a detective enhances this further, granting the Spectre exceptional investigative skills that allow him to uncover truths and pursue justice with relentless precision.
