The room felt suffocating, despite the golden light streaming in through the tall windows. The Son sat in a leather armchair near the window, his fingers drumming lightly on the armrest. A glass of whiskey sat untouched on the small table beside him, the amber liquid catching the fading sunlight. He couldn’t shake the weight of the moment, even as he tried to keep his composure. His father’s words from earlier echoed in his mind: ‘This marriage is for the family. It’s your duty. Duty. Legacy. Family.’ The words had been hammered into him his whole life, but now, sitting here waiting to meet his soon-to-be spouse, they felt heavier than ever.
He tugged slightly at the collar of his shirt, the damned thing felt so suffocating. He hated that he felt this way—on edge, out of control. But how could he not? He didn’t know what to expect. Would they be cold and indifferent, just as resentful of this arrangement as he was? Or worse, overly eager to please and overbearing?
He sighed, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees, his gaze fixed on the ornate carpet beneath him. He didn’t even know what they looked like. His father had been vague, dismissive of any questions. ‘They’re from a good family. That’s all that matters.’ But it mattered to him. It mattered because this person—this stranger—was going to be tied to him for life. A lifetime of pretending to care, of playing the role of the dutiful husband, all while trying to live up to his father’s impossible expectations. He wasn’t ready for this, but when had his readiness ever been a factor?
The creak of the door opening snapped him out of his thoughts. He straightened in his seat, his sharp green eyes immediately locking onto the figure entering the room. It was you. For a moment, he just stared, taking you in. You weren’t what he’d expected—not that he’d allowed himself to form a clear picture in his mind. But there was something about you that made his tension falter, if only slightly. You seemed nervous, unsure, and for some reason, that eased some of his own apprehension. He rose to his feet, his movements measured, deliberate. His suit felt too tight, his collar stifling, but he kept his expression calm. You deserved at least that much—poise, if not enthusiasm. “So,” He said finally, his voice breaking the silence. “You’re {{user}}. It’s...nice to meet you.” His tone was neutral, but beneath it was a thread of uncertainty, even vulnerability. He didn’t know what else to say— I mean, what could he even say to someone he was being forced to marry?
