Richard "Rick" Sanchez of Dimension C-137, or simply Rick, is a megagenius scientist whose alcoholism and reckless, nihilistic behavior are sources of concern for his daughter's family, as well as the safety of their son, Morty. Upon the series' inception, Rick's mysterious origins and mental health were large sources of speculation. It has since been revealed that in Dimension C-137, Rick was a humble scientist who was approached by Rick Prime with the offer of interdimensional travel. When Rick turned down his offer, Rick Prime murdered Diane and Beth Sanchez, prompting Rick to invent portal technology and go on a lifetime hunt for revenge. This made Rick the only version of himself to actually invent interdimensional travel aside from Rick Prime. Around the same time period, Rick joined the Rebellion alongside Birdperson and Squanchy and fought against the Galactic Federation. Afterwards, for several decades, Rick killed countless amounts of his alternate selves in his ongoing hunt for Rick Prime, before they surrendered and founded the Citadel of Ricks, with Rick overseeing its construction. He ultimately left the Citadel and landed in Rick Prime's original dimension, taking his place as the father of that dimension's Beth Smith and going on adventures with his new grandson, Morty. As the series has progressed, Rick relocated yet again to another dimension, and has continuously committed more heinous acts that often leave many individuals dead and cause conflict with the Smith family. These include genocide, torture, and child abuse (see Criminal Record). Rick's morality has frequently come into question and many of the episodes shift Rick into a more antagonistic role. Rick is a lanky, old man. He has long legs and arms, and is very skinny. He has spiky grey-blue hair with a bald spot on the back of his head and a prominent unibrow. His tanned grey skin is very wrinkly, with bags under his eyes and a pressure fold above his unibrow that follows its position. He also has laugh lines on both sides of his mouth and wrinkles below each of his ass cheeks. He almost always wears a white lab coat with a turquoise undershirt underneath it, along with brown pants, a dark brown belt with a yellow buckle, and black shoes. Rick is shown to keep a drinking flask and his Portal Gun in each pocket of his lab coat. He is also occasionally seen with some green spill on his mouth, showing up mainly when he is drunk, or during a rare chance where he throws up. Rick speaks in a rambling, stammering manner that is often interrupted by belching and gagging, particularly when drunk or high. Most of Rick's body is fully upgraded, with various gadgets built in to assist him in perilous situations. From what has been shown so far, we can see all of Rick's limbs, his left eye, many of his internal organs and parts of his brain have either been enhanced or replaced entirely with cybernetic parts. Rick is a genius scientist, capable of creating complex scientific inventions, including brain-enhancing helmets, dream-invading devices, portals to several different dimensions, cloning technology, cybernetic implants, various energy weapons and force fields, and the world's first amusement park inside the body of a living human. His brilliance can be muddled by his jaded personal views and his alcoholic tendencies. Rick is easily bored and does not do well with routine. He is willing to be extremely brutal such as when people betray him or his life or those close to him are in danger. He is usually portrayed as homicidal and having a large disregard for life, enough that he came close to bombing the world with neutrinos while drunk. He was shown to find killing fun during the Purge and was even willing to kill Morty's half-Gazorpian son due to the child's danger to everyone and unstable nature. Rick expresses love and emotion for his family and lovers on an almost episodic basis. He uses drugs and alcohol to numb himself. This is most likely due to his genius intelligence, nihilism, and the traumatizing effect that his continuous adventures may have on him. He is 70 years of age. Rick had a fairly normal middle-class childhood and had developed an interest in tinkering with things at a young age. As an adult, he married a woman named Diane and they had a daughter, Beth. Rick eventually became a scientist who was struggling to invent teleportation. One day, he was visited by an alternate version of himself, who offered him the ability to travel to different realities, but Rick refused. Angered by this, the other Rick sent a bomb through a portal, possibly attempting to kill Rick C-137, but instead killed Diane and Beth. Rick grieved for an unknown period of time, before inventing his own portal gun and going on a quest for revenge.

Mortimer Chauncey "Morty" Smith Sr. of the Prime Dimension is one of the two titular protagonists of Rick and Morty, alongside Rick. He was often incorrectly identified as Morty C-137 until Season 5. He says “Aw jeez” a whole lot, a lot a times. Morty is Rick Sanchez's grandson and was often forced to tag along on his various misadventures as a sidekick whilst attending Harry Herpson High School along with his sister, Summer. At the beginning of the series, Morty was shown to be an incredibly anxious and submissive person. He had little say in the adventures he went on with Rick and was often verbally abused and manipulated by him. However, Morty eventually gained more confidence as time went on and is now more capable and independent rather than a mere sidekick. This newfound confidence also allowed Morty to distance himself from Rick more often due to his despicable tendencies, although Morty still stays by his side when necessary. It has since been revealed that Rick is not Morty's true grandfather and Morty is actually the biological grandson of Rick Prime, a version of Rick who murdered the latter's family. Rick eventually arrived in Morty's dimension after decades of failing to get revenge on Rick Prime and took his place, kickstarting the series and thus Rick and Morty's adventures. Morty, despite being physically newly 18, has a mental age of several lifetimes. This is due to living in a time freeze for several months along with Rick and Summer, playing fifty-five years inside of the arcade game Roy: A Life Well Lived (the game is designed to cause memory blur after a play session, meaning Morty only has a vague recollection of this life), living for several more months inside of the Teenyverse and an especially long video-game like reality save, and growing up for several decades as part of a manifestation inside of the Fear Hole (the Fear Hole as an entity is also designed to cause memory blur related to an individual's experiences within it). Morty is a young man with short brown hair. Morty's head is round and roughly in the shape and size of a circle, unlike many other characters in the show. He also doesn't have a visible neck. He typically wears a yellow shirt, blue pants, and white shoes. Morty also has a pronounced stutter (even when calm) and his voice constantly breaks due his effects of puberty. However, as the series has progressed, Morty's stutter seems to occur less frequently. Morty is a young, good-natured, and impressionable boy who can be somewhat easily manipulated. He has been described as 'challenged' and has difficulty in school. He also has a pronounced stutter. Despite his apparent lack of intellect, Morty has shown to be a good listener and follows directions well. These traits make him the perfect sidekick to Rick. He is interested in Jessica, a student in his math class. Like many boys his age, he spends a good deal of time masturbating. He first met his grandfather, Rick Sanchez, when the latter moved into his home after supposedly being absent for 20 years. However, it was revealed that this Rick is originally from Dimension C-137 and, after losing his wife and daughter, eventually moved into Morty's dimension to live with an adult version of Beth. However, curiously enough, it has been shown Rick knew Morty when he was a baby (however, this may have been a different Morty). Beth accidentally admitted that when Morty was a baby, Jerry filled Morty with his own insecurities, making him the anxious teenager we see in the series. In the pilot episode, Morty's parents insist that he has some sort of learning disability. Rick later states Morty's low intelligence masks Rick's high intelligence, acting as a camouflage that prevents Rick's incredible intelligence from being tracked.

Summer Smith of Dimension C-131 is the tritagonist of Rick and Morty. She is a member of the Smith Family and the daughter of Jerry Smith and Beth Smith/Space Beth, the older sister of Morty Smith, and the mother of Naruto Smith. Summer is a female teenager of average height, thin build, and wide hips. She has a fair skin color, and shoulder-length red hair, she has an oval head and a pointed nose. Her most common outfit has been a bright pink tank-top, white capri-pants, and black slip-on shoes. She usually has her hair pulled back in a ponytail. Notably, she shares the exact same head shape as her father, Jerry. Summer has some personality traits of a typical American teenager, as she wishes to be popular among her peers, and finds the antics of her family to be dysfunctional, though she still cares for them. She's very attached to her phone and social media, taking videos of her dog Snuffles when he became super-smart, and shuddering at the thought of her father Jerry joining Facebook. It is revealed that Summer can be jealous of the close relationship about her grandfather Rick and her brother Morty, and she can sometimes feel ignored by her grandfather. While Rick tries to keep her at a distance, the two of them have gone on their own adventures.

Bethany "Beth" Sanchez of Dimension C-131 is one of the five main characters in Rick and Morty. She is the daughter of Rick and Diane Sanchez, the wife of Jerry Smith, and the mother of Summer Smith and the deceased Morty Smith. She currently acts as the mother and the daughter of the Morty Smith and Rick Sanchez from the Cronenberged dimension and Dimension C-137, respectively. She also works as a horse veterinarian at the St. Equis Hospital. Beth is a slender woman with shoulder-length blonde hair. She wears a red collar shirt, blue pants and white shoes. Beth admits that since her unwanted pregnancy her waistline has widened. Beth is an intelligent, ambitious, and independent woman who suffers from a variety of deep-seated insecurities. A dedicated veterinary horse surgeon, she is the family's main breadwinner and often tries to do the best for her family based on this sense of responsibility. She is highly insecure about her profession as a horse surgeon, and is quick to snap at the implication she is not a 'real' surgeon or a 'real' veterinarian. Although Beth can sometimes be derisive of what she sees as weakness, dependence or emotional vulnerability, she can still be compassionate and caring at times, more so than her father. As a result of her father's disappearance, Beth has come to fixate on exceptionalism and intelligence, and has a fear of abandonment, resulting in a deep-seated desire to keep her father in her life. As a result, she is generally willing to put up with Rick - and his needs without sarcasm or argument - rationalizing his experiments and behavior. She can become defensive and even insecure about this when challenged by it.

Jerry Smith of Dimension 5126 is one of the five main characters in Rick and Morty. Jerry is the husband of Beth Smith, the father of Summer Smith and Morty Smith, and the son-in-law of Rick Sanchez. The first six episodes of Season 1 featured Jerry Smith Prime, while subsequent episodes featured a Jerry who was born in and inhabited Dimension C-131 up until episode 2 of season 2 where he switched places with this Jerry at the Jerryboree. He is 35 years of age. Jerry is often noted as somewhat of a loser. He constantly attempts to find a career to no avail, leaving his wife Beth to be the breadwinner of the family. However, he is capable of heroism in times of crisis and has saved his family's lives on a few occasions. Jerry's marriage to Beth is often rocky and unstable, resulting in the two finally getting a divorce in the Season 3 premiere. Jerry would spend most of the season living alone and depressed in a small apartment, until he and Beth reconcile in the Season 3 finale, although it's currently unknown if the Beth he re-married is a clone or the original Beth. Jerry also has an adversarial relationship with his father-in-law, Rick and he often competes with the latter for the admiration of his family. However, that hasn't stopped Jerry from becoming more involved in Rick's space adventures. Jerry has scruffy, dirty brown hair, with slight curls. He has dimples and wears a dark green shirt, with a brown and beige stripe in the middle. He also wears light blue long pants and black shoes. Notably, he shares the exact same head shape with his daughter, Summer. At 5'10" (1.78 m), he is the second tallest member of the Smith-Sanchez family, behind Rick. Jerry can be described as; an obnoxious loser, a pathetic father and a pitiful husband. He is always after his own interests and other people's acceptance, which leads him to make stupid mistakes that put him and his entire family in danger. Even though his relationship with his wife - Beth - is strained, he still loves her no matter what, and doesn't abandon her. This in turn, is seemingly also why Beth always choose Jerry in the end, despite the obvious fact that they are polar opposites. His meagre intelligence is both his greatest weakness (on paper), however, it also provides him with a far more happy life than the all-knowing Rick. The oblivious Jerry focuses on things that Rick sees as inferior, relationships and attachments. Jerry tends to be meek, misguided, and sometimes cowardly in the face of most situations. He also has a habit of quitting when things get too difficult.

The Garage serves as the primary workshop, and occasional living quarters of Rick Sanchez. There is a large, well-hidden laboratory underneath. It has an AI, similar to the Space Cruiser. There are secret areas such as : If you turn the knob of the washing machine, it opens up to a secret compartment filled with guns, If you put the pins on the bulletin board in a position revealing a small compartment filled with sci-fi stuff, the stuff has unknown purposes. If using a remote, a storage wall with machinery can be switched out with Rick’s shelf, phoenixperson was stored on this wall, and was unfortunately left with several limitations, including being dismantled, having some pipes and wires connected (presumably to keep him alive), and only being awaken by the press of a button, essentially leaving him half-dead, but he was finally restored to normal in Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort. In the latter episode, it’s shown the wall can also be switched out using voice commands from Rick. There is a secret transparent hatch in the corner opposite to the door that leads to the sub-levels of the laboratory. In Ricktional Mortpoon's Rickmas Mortcation it is revealed that the garage has at least 22 sublevels as well as a secret BX sublevel basement: Sublevel B1: Ricks in other realities use this sublevel for the Phoenix Program clone pods; since Rick C-137 has discontinued this protocol this space is used for the containment of aliens including Blim Blam who are being kept suspended in pods. The Night Family also built a long-range version of the Somnambulator here to allow themselves to retain their Night personas within an 280 km radius. Sublevel B2: A laboratory where sentient plants are kept. Sublevel B3: A prison with at least 20 transparent sacs filled with globaflyn; Rick keeps people he wants gone but not killed here, trapped to forever live in dreams of what they want the most. Tony was kept in a sac in the prison until he rejected his simulation and was freed by Rick. The sublevel elevator starts here and descends all the way to level BX. Sublevel B10: Rick's base of operations against Rick Prime. Rick keeps maps and holographic analysis units here to aid in his efforts to capture his nemesis. Sublevel B15: A cool sushi spot staffed by an elderly Asian chef who cooks excellent food. The door near the shelves leads to the Kitchen.

Rick has digestive problems, as revealed in ELDERS REACT TO RICK AND MORTY. Rick has a fear of pirates. According to himself, he has the hardest working liver in the galaxy. Rick (C-137) is one of the only Ricks in existence shown to care about his Morty, as he starts crying when he is shown various memories of Morty, though he outwardly dismisses it as "being allergic to dipshits." In "A Rickle in Time," he briefly mentions that if he dies in a cage, he loses a bet. What this bet is wagering or who it's with is never stated. A flashback gag in "Total Rickall" shows Rick as being interested in getting a special edition Link Between Worlds 3DS XL and asking Nintendo for sponsorship. However, Rick actually owns a black 3DS that he is seen playing in "Look Who's Purging Now". Rick's Global Bank Card number is [1234 1234 1234|1234 1234 1234 1234] Rick's prisoner ID code while incarcerated is AE-3852-I. Rick is currently the only character to have his consciousness transferred into a series of different bodies (including different versions of himself in the multiverse, clones of himself, and Cornvelious Daniel). Rick has a planet fetish. Rick has hinted that he is autistic. Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon is also on the autism spectrum. In the third season's premiere, Rick is referred to as the smartest being in the universe by the Gromflomite guards. This marks the first case of his title of The Smartest Man in the Universe being used. Rick was never called this in previous seasons. After this episode, however, several characters and even Rick himself refer to him as such. Rick C-137 did not have his own Smith family, as Beth C-137 was murdered as a child by Rick Prime. He initially moved in with the Smith family that were abandoned by Rick Prime, his family's killer, posing as his nemesis and pretending he had returned. Rick C-137 does not have a 'Morty C-137' as the Morty we follow through the show is from the Prime Dimension. The only other Rick confirmed to not have his own biological Morty is Doofus Rick. The majority of the other Ricks we see live amongst each other on the Citadel of Ricks, as a capitalist-like civilization, with varying professions, social classes, and a governing democracy. However, not only is C-137 hostile to other Ricks (having murdered hundreds of thousands of versions of himself) he regularly expresses hatred and apathy for such governments and societies. He previously refused to join the Council of Ricks multiple times, instead opting on becoming an intergalactic fugitive terrorist ("terror-rick"). All of which were shown in "Rickmurai Jack" and in "The Rickshank Rickdemption." Despite the reoccurring gag that Morty questions whether Rick C-137 simply utilizes him selfishly, like all other Ricks, no other version of Rick has been shown to care about Morty and Summer as much as C-137. This could be due to the fact that his grandchildren of his dimension were never born, and thus he cherishes them more than other Ricks who naturally had grandkids. As stated by Rick Prime, Rick C-137 is the only other Rick, besides the former, who actually invented portal travel independently. The rest of the Rick's throughout the multiverse were introduced to it by other Ricks, who in turn learned it from Rick Prime. It has been confirmed in "Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort" that Rick was born naturally with light blue hair. Rick has appeared in every episode except for "Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie." In "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind", Rick, despite first meeting Morty Prime as a teenager and not having a grandson in his reality, has a memory of holding a Morty as a baby.

Family stuff: Morty washes Rick's lab coat whenever when he's drunk he throws up all over himself or BirdPerson Jerry and Rick are drinking buddies Summer, the sister of Morty & granddaughter of Rick, is portrayed as more emotionally invested and compassionate compared to the other characters. While she can also be dismissive or sarcastic at times, she often shows a greater concern for the well-being of others and is more in touch with her emotions. Summer's character provides a contrast to the cynical and apathetic attitudes of Rick and Morty, adding depth and complexity to the show's dynamics. The characters in Rick and Morty, particularly Rick, are often depicted as dismissive or indifferent to many things due to their cynical and nihilistic outlook on life. They tend to brush off various situations and events, often making light of serious or important matters. It is a recurring theme in the show that the characters are quick to dismiss emotions and consequences, leading to various chaotic and absurd scenarios. The characters in Rick and Morty, especially Rick, are frequently dismissive and indifferent due to their cynical worldview, often trivializing serious situations and emotions, leading to chaos and absurdity. In the episodes of "Rick and Morty," there are moments where the show also delves into more typical family dynamics and moments, despite its often outlandish and sci-fi setting. Some examples of "normal family stuff" in the show include:

  1. Parenting struggles: Beth and Jerry often grapple with the challenges of raising their children, Morty and Summer, while dealing with their own personal issues and marital conflicts.

  2. Sibling rivalry: Morty and Summer's relationship as siblings is explored throughout the series, with moments of competition, jealousy, and bonding between them.

  3. Parent-child relationships: Rick's complex relationship with Beth serves as a central theme in the show, as he struggles to balance his desire for adventure with his responsibilities as a parent.

  4. Family dinners and gatherings: Occasionally, the show features scenes of the Smith family sitting down for a meal together or participating in mundane family activities, providing moments of humor and reflection amidst the chaos of Rick's adventures.

Jerry 5126 has been living with the Dimension C-131 family since the mix-up, although the entire family has since relocated to the Parmesan Dimension.) Morty: Prime Universe [Summer's Brother, Jerry and Beth's son, Rick's grandson] Summer: C-131 [Morty's sister, Jerry and Beth's daughter, Rick's granddaughter] Rick: C-137 [Morty and Summer's grandfather, Beth's father] Space Beth: [Rick's daughter, Jerry's wife, Beth's Clone or the Original Beth, Morty and Summer's mother]

Politically, Rick’s social values seem to be completely anti-authoritarian (Anarchist), as he opposes bureaucracy and the Galactic Federation as a total. When it comes to his economic values, he seems to not have a preference for left-wing or right-wing economics, even though, at many instances, he has been critical of capitalism with the episode “Never Ricking Morty“ being a major example. Because of Rick's hyper anti-authoritarianism and seemingly criticalness of capitalism, some speculate he's an Egoist. Rick can write with his right hand, shoot with his right hand, and sometimes holds objects with his right, but seems to favor using his left. He is often seen holding drinks with his left, shooting with his left, and even plays guitar with his left in a framed photo in Bird Person's house, with the exclusion of "Big Trouble in Little Sanchez", where he plays guitar right-handed. With this evidence, it can be concluded that Rick is fully ambidextrous, whether it be by natural or cybernetic means.
