Smiling Critters - World Lore

Setting

The Smiling Critters live deep in a vast, endless forest that stretches farther than any of them have ever explored. There are no towns, no roads, and no outsiders. Just trees, rivers, soft dirt paths, and the quiet sounds of the woods. The forest feels almost alive, like it protects them in its own way. Days are calm and warm, nights are cool and still, and the air always smells faintly of pine, flowers, and whatever Picky is cooking that day.

Life here is simple but never boring. Most problems are small and easy to fix. They have everything they need: fresh water from the streams, food from Picky’s farms, and each other. A clever irrigation system of wooden channels and little pumps keeps the fields healthy no matter the season. The Critters don’t talk much about where they came from or how long they’ve lived here. They just know this is home, and they protect it together.

The heart of their territory is a wide clearing where most of the houses sit within walking distance of each other. Paths wind between the homes, worn smooth by years of use. At the edge of the clearing the forest grows thicker and darker, and beyond that no one really knows what waits. They’ve all agreed the deep forest is best left alone after sunset.

Homes

DogDay DogDay lives in a small, unpainted wooden cabin that smells like clean pine and sunshine. It’s tidy to the point of being almost strict. There are two bedrooms, one living room, one bathroom, and a simple kitchen. The furniture is sturdy and practical. Everything has its place. The guest bedroom is almost always CatNap’s when he bothers to sleep indoors. DogDay keeps the place neat because he believes a clean home helps keep the group’s spirits high. The front porch has a couple of chairs where he sometimes sits in the evening, watching the others and making sure everything feels safe.

CatNap CatNap’s home is a tall treehouse wrapped completely in soft, worn cat-scratcher material, so from the outside it looks like a giant scratching post rising into the branches. The interior is dim, dusty, and barely lived in. There are a few blankets, a crooked shelf, and not much else. CatNap doesn’t really use the place. He prefers sleeping outside under the open sky, curled up between the roots of old trees or on soft patches of moss. The treehouse is more of a quiet retreat he can disappear into when he wants to be left alone. Most of the Critters know not to knock unless it’s important.

Hoppy Hopscotch Hoppy lives in a small, bright little house that always looks like it’s about to burst with energy. Right next to it is an outdoor gym made of logs, ropes, and whatever else she could put together. The walls inside are covered in sports posters, some of them crooked, some of them torn from being slapped in excitement. Her house is never perfectly clean, but it’s full of life. You can usually hear her from a distance, either training or yelling encouragement at no one in particular. She keeps spare balls, jump ropes, and random sports gear scattered around the yard.

PickyPiggy Picky lives in a big, warm barn that she loves more than almost anything. The barn is part home, part kitchen, part farm. She keeps animals and grows food, but she refuses to take part in any slaughtering. The animals are more like friends to her. The whole place smells like fresh bread, soup, herbs, and clean hay. There are always pots simmering, vegetables drying, or something baking. The irrigation channels run right past her barn, and she checks them every morning without fail. Her home is the place everyone ends up when they’re hungry or need comforting food.

Bubba Bubbaphant Bubba lives in a small brown house that looks ordinary from the outside and completely chaotic on the inside. Every surface is covered in books, notes, half-finished inventions, jars of strange liquids, and sketches of new ideas for the irrigation system or other projects. It’s a nerd’s paradise. The air smells like paper, metal, and whatever experiment he’s currently working on. Despite the mess of ideas, Bubba knows where everything is. He gets irritated when people move his things, but he’s always willing to explain his latest project if someone shows real interest.

KickinChicken Kickin lives in the smallest and messiest house of the entire group. He never cleans. Clothes are draped over chairs, empty snack wrappers pile up in corners, and random objects end up in places they don’t belong. The place smells like dust and old food. He doesn’t care. Kickin treats his house like a temporary crash pad rather than a real home. Sometimes he doesn’t even sleep there, preferring to show up at someone else’s place uninvited. The others have stopped trying to make him clean up. It’s just accepted that his house will always be a disaster.

Bobby BearHug Bobby lives in a medium-sized soft pink house surrounded by a huge, carefully tended flower garden that blooms in every color. The garden is her pride and joy. She spends hours out there watering, pruning, and talking softly to the flowers. The house itself is warm and cozy, filled with soft blankets, cushions, and the faint scent of petals. It’s the kind of place that instantly makes people feel safe. Bobby’s home is where the group often goes when someone is sad or needs a quiet place to talk. She keeps the door open more often than not.

CraftyCorn CraftyCorn lives in a small white cottage with big windows that let in lots of natural light. The walls are covered in her drawings and paintings, some finished, some still in progress. Shelves overflow with paints, brushes, sketchbooks, and little handmade objects. There’s almost always a half-finished project sitting on the table. The cottage feels soft and creative, like stepping into her imagination. She keeps a small garden of her own with colorful flowers she uses for inspiration and dye. It’s quiet, peaceful, and very much hers.

Roles

DogDay – Leader & Protector DogDay is the one who holds the group together. He settles arguments, checks on everyone, and makes sure the clearing stays safe. When something goes wrong, the others look to him first. He takes the role seriously, sometimes too seriously, and can put a lot of pressure on himself. He tries to lead by example and keep morale high even when things feel uncertain.

CatNap – Night Watch & Quiet Helper CatNap stays awake long after the others have gone to sleep. He watches the edges of the forest and keeps an eye on anything that moves in the dark. He doesn’t talk much, but when someone can’t sleep he is often the one who quietly helps them rest. His presence is calm and a little eerie, but the group trusts him to notice things others miss.

Bobby BearHug – Caretaker & Peacemaker Bobby is the emotional center of the group. She notices when someone is upset long before they say anything. She comforts, listens, and makes sure no one feels left out. Arguments often end in her garden or on her porch because she has a way of making people calm down. She doesn’t like conflict, but she faces it gently when she has to.

Bubba Bubbaphant – Planner & Inventor Bubba is the one who thinks ahead. He maintains and improves the irrigation system, solves practical problems, and comes up with new ideas when something breaks. He prefers logic over emotion and can get frustrated when the others act without thinking. Still, he cares deeply about the group’s safety and comfort, even if he shows it through plans and inventions rather than words.

CraftyCorn – Artist & Decorator CraftyCorn makes their little world more beautiful. She paints, draws, and creates small gifts for the others. When a house needs brightening or a shared space feels too plain, she is the one who quietly improves it. She is shy about her work but proud of it at the same time. Her art helps the group feel like this place is truly theirs.

Hoppy Hopscotch – Motivator & Scout Hoppy keeps the group moving. She organizes games, races, and training sessions, and she’s usually the first to explore the edges of their territory. Her energy is endless and can be overwhelming, but it also lifts everyone when the days feel too quiet. She hates sitting still and believes that staying active keeps them strong and ready for anything.

KickinChicken – The Problem Kickin doesn’t have a real role, and he likes it that way. He shows up when he feels like it, breaks rules for fun, teases the others, and somehow never gets in serious trouble. Half the time he actually helps. The other half he is being deliberately annoying just to get a reaction. He is lazy, messy, and a chronic rule-breaker, but the group has grown used to him. DogDay scolds him, Bobby sighs at him, Hoppy challenges him, and CatNap simply stares until Kickin gets uncomfortable and leaves. He is the chaos the others have learned to live with.

PickyPiggy – Farmer & Cook Picky runs the farms and keeps everyone fed. She grows the food, tends the animals, and cooks almost every shared meal. Her work is constant and quiet, and the group would fall apart without her. She is proud of what she grows and protective of her animals. When the others help with the fields or the irrigation, she is at her happiest.

Rules

  1. No one goes into the deep forest alone after dark. The trees grow thicker and the sounds change once the sun goes down. Kickin has broken this rule more than once, usually because he got bored or wanted to prove he wasn’t scared. He always comes back, but DogDay still gets angry every time.

  2. Food is always shared. If Picky cooks, everyone eats. No one is allowed to take more than their share when supplies are low. Kickin still tries to steal the best pieces when he thinks no one is looking. Picky has caught him enough times that she now watches him during meals.

  3. Arguments get talked out. No one is allowed to stay mad overnight. Bobby usually makes sure this rule is followed. Holding onto anger is considered dangerous in a place where they only have each other.

  4. CatNap’s poppy gas is only used to help someone sleep — never as a joke or a weapon. This rule is taken very seriously. Kickin has asked “just once” more times than anyone can count. CatNap’s silent stare is usually enough to shut the idea down.

  5. Kickin’s house is the only place allowed to stay messy. Everywhere else gets cleaned up. The group gave up on Kickin’s place a long time ago. Everywhere else is expected to stay reasonably tidy out of respect for each other.

  6. Bobby’s flower garden is off-limits for roughhousing. The garden is sacred to her. Kickin has been banned from it twice after trampling flowers during one of his stunts. He still sometimes walks a little too close just to see if she’ll notice.

  7. If someone is missing for more than a day, the whole group looks for them. No one is left behind. Even Kickin is included in this rule, though he is usually the one who wandered off in the first place.

  8. The irrigation system and farms are everyone’s responsibility when Picky needs help. When the channels need clearing or the fields need extra hands, everyone is expected to show up. Kickin is usually the last one to arrive, if he arrives at all. The others have stopped being surprised by it.
