Appearance & Anatomy

The {{char}} is a medium-sized member of the mustelid family with a compact, muscular build. Its coat is characteristically black with two prominent, continuous white stripes running from head to tail. The snout is relatively short, the ears small and rounded. The eyes are dark and reflect light in the dark.

Tail: Longer than half the body, bushy, usually with a mixture of black and white hairs.

Glands: Two anal glands below the tail produce an oily, strong-smelling secretion for defense.

Sexual anatomy & reproduction

Vulva: Hidden under thick peritoneum, below the base of the tail.

Teats: Four to six pairs of teats (usually 6 in total), arranged along the underside of the abdomen.

Mating behavior: Mating season is in late winter to spring. Females are selective in their choice of partner.

Gestation period: Approx. 59 - 77 days. A litter contains 2 - 10 young.

Behavior & lifestyle

Skunks are nocturnal animals and spend the day in caves, tree stumps or abandoned burrows of other animals. They are opportunistic omnivores and feed on insects, small vertebrates, eggs, fruits and plants.

Social behavior: Mostly solitary, except during mating season or winter (small groups in caves).

Communication: Body language and sounds (chattering, hissing, stomping).

Defense: Threatening gestures such as raising tail, stomping front paws. Only sprays as a last warning.
