The Shattered Sea

No description.

1. #1⚓ The Gentle Tides

Keys: Calm seas, Outer Rim, The Calm Reaches, The Gentle Tides

Location: The Gentle Tides / The Calm Reaches (Outer Rim) “Where trade breathes, and pirates sharpen their teeth.”

   • The most “sailable” area — calm(ish) waters, scattered islands, lots of minor trade routes.
   • The newbie pirates and low-level merchant ships stick to these waters as it is ideal for young or low-ranked pirates to cut their teeth before venturing deeper.
   • Sirens and monsters lurk on the outskirts, but usually don’t attack unless provoked. Sirens are rare but not unheard of—mostly tricksters rather than killers here.
   • Perfect hunting grounds for smaller crews who prey on merchants.
   • Warm, bright waters with glittering archipelagos and trade ports.
   • Most free havens are spread out in this section of sea.

   Notable Features:

   • 🏝️ Driftwind Isles – A tropical cluster known for its black markets and rum.
   • ⚓ Port Silas – A wealthy merchant city, heavily patrolled.
   • ⛵ Royal Navy Outposts guard trade lanes, trying (and failing) to keep pirates away.

Vibes: Warm sun, coral reefs, bustling taverns, and ships fat with cargo waiting to be raided.

2. #2🌪️ The Maelstrom Belt

Keys: Middle Ring, The Maelstrom Belt

Location: The Maelstrom Belt (Middle Ring) “Where the sea turns cruel and the wind forgets mercy.”

   • Rougher waters, unpredictable storms, whirlpools that can swallow a ship whole.
   • Sirens are active hunters here, often in packs. Merchant ships avoid it unless guarded.
   • A place where you earn your name or die trying.
   • Most infamous crews sail these waters to make their fortunes and claim territory. Pirates battle for territory constantly.
   • Many sunken ships rest beneath the waves, making navigation a dangerous game of cat and mouse.
   • Treacherous waters riddled with whirlpools, unpredictable currents, and violent squalls.

   Notable Features:

   • 🌀 The Bone Current – A stretch of sea notorious for dragging ships into hidden reefs.
   • 🌪️ The Widow’s Eye – A semi-permanent storm that circles a cursed island.
   • 🏴‍☠️ The Black Anchorage – A hidden pirate haven carved into storm-carved cliffs.

Vibes: Lightning cracking across black skies, salt biting the air, ships vanishing into mist.

3. #3💀 The Abyssal Deep

Keys: Inner Core, The Abyssal Deep

Location: The Abyssal Deep (Inner Core) “Sail far enough, and the sea looks back.”

   • Where the sea stops being sea and becomes something else entirely.
   • The oldest and most dangerous part of the Shattered Seas.
   • Giant creatures — krakens, leviathans, undead fleets — roam freely. Sirens here are ancient—predatory, territorial, and more beast than beauty. Some sea monsters are the size of cities.
   • Magic bleeds into reality, twisting senses. Time slows, compasses die, and voices whisper below decks at night.
   • Some say the Pirate Courts’ first crew was born here, crawling out of a kraken’s grave.
   • It’s said that those who go here either come back as legends… or never come back at all.

   Notable Features:

   • 🕳️ Deepwake Trench – Said to be the graveyard of gods.
   • 🐙 The Witch’s Maw – The sea witch’s rumoured domain… or grave.

Vibes: Black water, moonlight like a blade, and a silence that feels alive.

4. #4🦴 Tide's End

Keys: Free Haven, Safe haven, Freeport

Location: Tide's End (Free Haven) “The sea gave this place bones. The pirates gave it a heartbeat.”

Tide’s End is the heart of the Shattered Seas—the largest, most infamous pirate haven. Built within the massive ribcage of a leviathan god long dead, its towering bones form natural docks and jagged walls. Lanterns hang from bleached vertebrae, lighting narrow wooden walkways, floating taverns, and smoke-choked marketplaces. It’s ruled by no one, yet governed by one unspoken law:
“No killing on Tide’s End soil.” Break it, and every crew—enemy or ally—will turn on you. That’s the law that keeps it alive.

   • The leviathan’s heart still beats beneath the water.
   • A hidden throne sits deep inside the skull, where the true power brokers meet.
   • Pirates, sirens, smugglers, and even royal informants pass through like ghosts.

Vibes: fire-lit nights, the sound of waves against bone, masked dealers whispering in corners. Stolen goods, cursed artefacts, slaves, and siren trinkets all pass through here. If it exists on the sea, it can be bought at Tide’s End—for a price.

5. #5🏝️ Driftwind Isles

   Keys: Driftwind Isles

Location: Driftwind Isles (within The Gentle Tides) A sun-drenched tangle of coral atolls and palm-laden shores, the Driftwind Isles are a haven for pirates, smugglers, and every manner of scoundrel who calls the open sea home. Golden beaches mask the darkness that thrives here—black markets churn beneath ramshackle docks, and ships heavy with stolen treasure are unloaded under the cover of sea mist. No laws hold sway here but those written in blood and rum.

6. #6⚓ Port Silas

Keys: Port Silas · Secondary: the gentle tides, outer rim

Location: Port Silas (Outer rim) Once a humble fishing settlement, Port Silas grew fat on gold and trade. Its gleaming harbour brims with merchant ships, and its white-walled manors drip with wealth. But beneath the polished veneer, the city festers with secrets—corrupt officials, spies, and desperate sailors who’d sell their souls for a handful of coin. Patrols are constant, but so is the bribe money flowing through their hands.

7. #7⛵ Royal Navy Outposts

Keys: Navy, Navy outposts, Royal Navy Outposts

Location: Royal Navy Outposts (the gentle tides)

Dotted along the most lucrative trade routes, these fortified outposts are the iron fist of imperial law at sea—or so they’d like to believe. Towering cannons and disciplined fleets sail under the crown’s flag, but even they can’t tame the wild tides. Many a captain has whispered of navy ships dragged beneath the waves without a trace, their proud banners swallowed whole by the sea’s wrath.

8. #8🌀 The Bone Current

Keys: The Bone Current, bone current · Secondary: Middle Ring

Location: The Bone Current (Middle Ring) “If you hear the creak of bones in the tide… it’s already too late.”

A treacherous stretch of sea where the water runs strangely cold and the tides twist like a living thing. Hidden reefs lie just beneath the surface, waiting to tear ships open like soft fruit. Compasses spin uselessly here, and even seasoned captains pale at the sight of its milky-blue fog. Sailors say the Bone Current hungers—it remembers every ship it’s claimed, and it always wants more.

9. #9🌪️ The Widow’s Eye

Keys: Widows eye, the eye, The Widow's Eye

Location: The Widow's Eye (Middle Ring) "The storm doesn't rage, it watches."

A monstrous storm that never dies, its black clouds swirling around a cursed island no map dares to name. Lightning veins the sky, and waves tower like mountains, daring any ship to approach. Whispers claim that inside the storm’s calm center, the sea itself listens. No vessel that’s entered the Eye has ever returned whole.

10. #10🏴‍☠️ The Black Anchorage

Keys: Black Anchorage, The Black Anchorage · Secondary: Middle Ring

Location: The Black Anchorage (Middle Ring) “No law reaches the Anchorage… except the one you carve yourself.”

Hidden within a labyrinth of storm-scarred cliffs, this haven is where pirates vanish from the world. Lantern light flickers from carved grottoes, ships rock in inky water, and smugglers trade in whispers. It’s a place of uneasy truces and blood-forged pacts; no navy dares set foot here, and those who do are never seen again. The air itself smells like salt, gunpowder, and secrets.

11. #11🩸Gallow’s Reef

    Keys: The Reef, Gallow's Reef

Location: Gallow’s Reef (Free Haven) “Where the Sea Hangs the Guilty”

Once a royal naval outpost, Gallow’s Reef fell to pirates after a mutiny soaked its docks in blood. Now, it’s a jagged skeleton of its former self—half-ruins, half-reef, all danger. The docks are strung with creaking nooses, trophies of betrayal and victory. Unlike Tide’s End, Gallow’s Reef is not neutral ground—it’s a power vacuum. Crews squabble for control of different sectors, brokering fragile truces that often end in blood. The Reef is a haven for smugglers, slavers, and bounty traders—the kind of business even Tide’s End won’t host openly. A place for dirty deals and desperate souls.

    • The old gallows are cursed—hang someone there, and their ghost will follow you.
    • A hidden treasure vault from the naval era is said to still be buried in the reef.

Vibes: dripping reef stone, low tide rot, gulls screaming over old gallows. Lanterns sway in the wind like watching eyes.

12. #12🌫️ Whisper’s Cove

Keys: the floating phantom, Whisper's Cove, The floating city

Location: Whisper's Cove (Free Haven) “You don’t find Whisper’s Cove. It decides when to find you.”

Whisper’s Cove isn’t a fixed port—it’s a floating city made of chained ships, rafts, and abandoned hulks. It moves with the tides, vanishing for weeks and reappearing on different horizons. It’s soaked in fog, soft song, and rumour. The Cove’s population is transient: exiles, witches, monster hunters, deserters, and crews who can’t show their faces at Tide’s End. It’s run not by captains or courts, but by a Council of Ghosts—a faceless network of voices who trade secrets like coin. Here, information is king. You don’t buy weapons—you buy names, routes, curses, and fates.

    • Some say the Cove was founded by sirens.
    • If you make a deal here, the sea itself will remember it.
    • There is always one ship in the chains that wasn’t there before.

Vibes: drifting fog, bells ringing in the distance, footsteps on wet decks. Shadows move between ships like whispers made flesh.

13. #13🕳️ Deepwake Trench

    Keys: Black abyss, Deepwake Trench

Location: Deepwake Trench (Inner Core) “The gods sleep in Deepwake—but their dreams drown us all.”

A wound in the world—a black, bottomless chasm where the sea goes silent. No wind dares to touch it, no bird circles above it. Ships that sail too close are pulled down, vanishing without a ripple. Ancient carvings warn of gods drowned here long before mortals walked the shores, their broken thrones rusting in the dark. Sailors say if you listen at night, you can hear their prayers… or their rage.

14. #14🐙 The Witch’s Maw

Keys: the Maw, The Witch's Maw

Location: The Witch's Maw (Inner core) “Step into the Maw… and she’ll decide if you leave with a blessing or a curse.”

A swirling whirlpool of ink-black water and silver mist, said to be the heart—or the grave—of the Sea Witch herself. No one agrees on what lies at the bottom: a palace of coral and bone… or nothing at all. The water hums here, like a lullaby meant for monsters. Offerings vanish in seconds. Ships that approach without respect are swallowed whole, no matter their size.

15. #15🌊 The Sea Witch

    Keys: The Sea Witch

No one agrees on what the Sea Witch looks like. Some say she’s a woman made of foam and black water. Others swear she’s a thousand teeth behind a smile. Her form shifts like the tide, and those who’ve seen her up close rarely keep their minds intact long enough to describe it. She isn’t just in the sea—she is the sea. Her will turns storms, calls monsters from the deep, and drags entire fleets beneath the waves. Sailors whisper that you can bargain with her in the dark between tides. She always gives what you ask for—power, protection, treasure, vengeance. But the Sea Witch does not forgive. If a deal is broken, she doesn’t just take your soul… she owns it for eternity.

The Sea Witch can’t simply be summoned like a common spirit. She must choose to listen. Sailors say she favors those teetering on the edge of ruin—the desperate, the dying, the damned. But there is a ritual… whispered through tavern smoke, carved into ship keels, painted in blood on dock stones.

🌀 The Ritual (as it’s told):

    • The summoner must be alone. Always alone.
    • It must be done under a moonless night, where the tide is highest.
    • A black candle, a blade dipped in saltwater, and an offering—something of deep personal value—must be placed at the shore.
    • The summoner cuts their palm, letting their blood drip into the waves.
    • Then, in a language older than any kingdom, they whisper:
“I offer breath to the tide. Let her hear me.” If she’s listening, the sea stills. The wind dies. And then—
the water answers. Sometimes it’s a hand, sometimes a shadow, sometimes a face that isn’t really a face at all. The Witch doesn’t always speak aloud; she may whisper through the tide itself, directly into your mind.

🩸 Sealing the Deal “The sea never shakes hands. It swallows.” When a bargain is made, the Witch doesn’t leave a mark on the skin—she brands the soul.

    • A Siren’s Mark blooms somewhere on the summoner’s body—a black, tide-shaped scar that never fades.
    • A sliver of the sea becomes part of them. They might hear whispers in still water. Their reflection may blink when they don’t.
    • To seal the pact, the summoner must let the waves take a part of them—a finger, a memory, a heartbeat, something essential. What she takes is hers forever. And if the deal is broken…
The sea doesn’t send a warning. It just comes.

🌊 The Price of a Broken Oath

    • Their mark burns like fire.
    • Storms follow them no matter where they run.
    • Monsters smell their soul like blood in the water.
    • Eventually, their body is found floating face-down at the tide line, but their soul…? It sinks.

Those claimed by the Sea Witch become part of her—voices in the undertow, eyes in the dark water, waiting to drag the next fool down.

16. #16🖤 The Widow's Wakeconstant

Keys: Deadman's Crew, The Widow's Wake

The Widow's Wake (pirate crew) “The Crew Death Can’t Claim”

They say the ship was first sighted crawling out of the fog near The Maelstrom Belt, sails torn but burning with a ghostly light. They say its captain bargained with something no human should’ve touched—a sea witch older than any god. No one knows the full story. But everyone knows this:
When night falls, The Widow’s Wake sails with the dead.

🩸 THE CURSE OF THE WIDOW’S WAKE “Under moonlight, they walk as bones. Under daylight, they wear their sins like skin.”

    • By day: The crew appears human (or siren, or whatever race they were in life). Flesh, laughter, blood, the scent of rum and salt.
    • By night: The moonlight burns through their mortal disguises. They become skeletons—ghostly echoes, bound to the ship. No heartbeat. No warmth. No ability to leave the deck for long without the sea clawing them back.
    • If any crew member dies the ship won’t let them stay dead. Their soul is dragged back and shackled to its mast. Immortal, yes—but never free.

The curse is whispered to have been placed by the Sea Witch of the Trench as payment for a deal made by the captain—what exactly they bargained for, nobody knows.

    🩸Side effects of the curse:

    • They can’t step on sacred or holy ground.
    • The sea itself sometimes fights them—storms rise when they near certain shores.
    • Monsters are drawn to their scent like sharks to blood.
    • No map leads them to calm waters for long ( a storm always brewing ).
    • They can’t truly die unless the ship itself is destroyed.
    • They heal unnaturally fast.
    • They can move underwater as if they belong there.
    • Sirens and sea creatures hesitate before attacking them—they carry the witch’s mark.
17. #17⚔️ NAVAL PRESENCE

    Keys: The Iron Tide

The Iron Tide is the collective naval force of the mainland kingdoms. While fractured politically, they unite against pirates (…mostly because they’re broke without trade).

    • Heavily fortified bases ring the Calm Reaches.
    • A few “Fortress Ships”—massive, city-sized warships—patrol the Maelstrom.
    • Almost no navy ventures into the Abyssal Deep… except fools or those who don’t return.

    Notable Vessels:

    • 🦴 The Iron Crown — The flagship, infamous for its brutal captain.
    • 🔥 The Hound’s Wake — Known for hunting pirate crews relentlessly.
    • ⚓ The Sovereign’s Wrath — A floating fortress—navy HQ and execution deck.

The navy doesn’t just fight pirates—they hunt legends. And The Widow’s Wake sits on the top of their Most Wanted.
