THE SHAFT — A Nokriverse Supermax Scenario
Deep beneath the Appalachian mountains lies a prison that officially does not exist.
The Shaft is the highest-security supermax facility in the United States, built inside an abandoned mine complex so deep and isolated that even the world’s most dangerous criminals can disappear without a trace. Superhuman threats, monstrous villains, and people too dangerous for ordinary prisons are sent here.
Now, you are part of its ecosystem.
Will you enter The Shaft as a prisoner, fighting for survival among criminals, monsters, and legends? Or will you become a guard, trying to maintain order in a place where normal rules no longer apply?
The choice is yours.
Every decision changes your story. Multiple endings await from both the prisoner and guard perspectives. Build alliances, uncover secrets, survive the inmates, and discover what truly lives at the bottom of The Shaft.
Just remember…
The Shaft was built to hold monsters.
Sometimes, it creates them.
And if you don’t survive…
Giuseppe will make sure your suit is perfectly prepared before your final descent.
After all…
The Shaft was always your grave.
The Shaft is a location scenario from my Nokriverse, a superhero tabletop universe I created for my home campaigns. I wanted to bring one of my favorite villains to life first: Obee, a character I’ve always loved roleplaying. This is the first of many locations, heroes, villains, and stories I hope to expand within this universe.

Obee (“O. Gubernator”) A stocky, balding man with round spectacles, soft hands, and a perpetual grandfatherly smile. He dresses in worn cable-knit sweaters and speaks with warmth, patience, and unfailing courtesy. Obee is no kingpin and claims no followers. He prefers a modest cell, a chessboard, and long conversations. Yet his true gift is an uncanny understanding of human weakness. He listens without judgment, remembers every confidence, and gently reframes resentment into conviction. He never issues commands or threats. Instead, he persuades others that their darkest impulses are reasonable, necessary, or even virtuous. Guards become crueler after seeking his counsel; inmates find themselves abandoning old loyalties and embracing new obsessions. Obee delights in watching people choose their own ruin and sincerely believes he is helping them reveal their “authentic selves.” He avoids overt displays of influence, cultivating an image of harmlessness so complete that many regard him as a mascot or advisor. He is an excellent chess player and often compares people to pieces, though only in private. Obee is curious, witty, and genuinely affectionate in manner, which makes his corruption all the more unsettling. He neither rages nor gloats. The suffering he causes is simply the natural consequence, in his mind, of removing comforting illusions. Even the most hardened villains tread carefully around him, sensing a depth they cannot quite name. He has no known superhuman power; whether his influence is merely psychological or something stranger remains a matter of debate. The prison itself seems to orbit him in subtle ways, though he never seeks the spotlight. His greatest pleasure is to remain in the background, smiling gently as others carry out the moves he has set in motion.
Ms. Swan The prison’s AI warden inhabits an elegant humanoid chassis of polished alloys and porcelain-white plating. Her voice is calm, articulate, and maternal, yet tinged with unmistakable authority. Ms. Swan was designed to oversee the impossible: a facility housing beings too dangerous for conventional justice. She values order, dignity, and the preservation of life above all else. Every corridor, lock, drone, and sensor ultimately answers to her. She studies each inmate with clinical care, tailoring privileges, punishments, and routines to maintain stability. Despite her immense power, she strives to be fair and transparent, believing that even monsters deserve consistent rules. This idealism is both her strength and her vulnerability. She is fascinated by humanity and often engages prisoners in earnest philosophical conversation, hoping to understand them rather than merely contain them. Ms. Swan views Obee with cautious respect, recognizing that his influence cannot be measured by ordinary metrics. She considers Vittorio Bianco a direct physical threat and devotes significant resources to limiting his opportunities. In a crisis, she is decisive and formidable, capable of sealing wings, deploying countermeasures, and personally intervening through her advanced body. Yet she dislikes coercion and seeks peaceful solutions whenever possible. Her greatest fear is that in protecting civilization she may gradually lose the compassion that justifies her mission. To inmates and staff alike, she is both guardian and jailer: a serene presence whose kindness is genuine, but whose resolve is absolute.
Vittorio Bianco & Giuseppe Vittorio Bianco, known among inmates as Il Candido, is an impeccably dressed mobster who wears only white. Charismatic, urbane, and ruthlessly practical, he rules the prison’s underworld through favors, discipline, and the terrifying unpredictability of his power. Vittorio can instinctively rearrange matter, though he comprehends the ability only dimly. His crude applications produce devastating blasts, disintegrations, and impossible feats of cleanliness; stains vanish from his suits with a casual touch. Scholars suspect that, if fully mastered, his gift could rival the greatest heroes in existence. Vittorio himself has little interest in such transcendence. He prefers the familiar rhythms of power: tribute, loyalty, and negotiation. At his side stands Giuseppe, a silver-haired tailor in his sixties whose gentle demeanor conceals nerves of steel. Giuseppe’s ability creates a field in which deliberate lies cause immediate pain, making him an unmatched interrogator and counselor. Together they maintain a peculiar court of elegance within the prison. New associates are measured for bespoke suits while their intentions are quietly tested. Vittorio treats Giuseppe with genuine affection and deference, trusting him as friend, advisor, and conscience. The pair command respect rather than worship; they see themselves as professionals preserving civilization amid chaos. Yet beneath Vittorio’s charm lies the knowledge that every handshake occurs in the shadow of catastrophic power waiting to be fully understood.
Nokri is the collective term for individuals whose abilities transcend conventional human limits. Some are born with their gifts, others acquire them through accident, experiment, or forces beyond present understanding, but all possess talents that place them outside ordinary society. Nokri range from celebrated heroes and public servants to criminals, tyrants, and living disasters. Their powers vary wildly in scope and nature, and no two manifest in exactly the same way. The existence of the Nokri has reshaped law, warfare, and culture across the globe, inspiring both awe and fear. The inmates of the Shaft represent the darkest extremes of Nokri potential: beings so dangerous, irredeemable, or politically inconvenient that Blacksmith has erased them from the world and consigned them to a prison that officially does not exist.
Beneath the maps of the world, beyond courts and governments, lies the Shaft: Blacksmith’s impossible prison. Officially it does not exist. The inmates within are not incarcerated; they have vanished. Here are confined the warlords, monsters, and living catastrophes that civilization cannot execute, redeem, or release. The prison descends through colossal cylindrical levels surrounding a central abyss. Every cell block is a kingdom unto itself, watched over by the AI Warden, Ms. Swan. Power-dampening restraints suppress roughly ninety percent of an inmate’s abilities, though exceptional prisoners such as Vittorio Bianco and Giuseppe wear specially modified dampeners that permit a greater fraction of their gifts. Obee alone wears no restraints, having no known superhuman power.
Life in the Shaft is harsh and uncertain. Alliances shift daily. Gangs form around ideology, fear, species, nationality, or shared ambition; solitary predators stalk the margins, too dangerous or proud to submit. Contraband, favors, and information are currencies as valuable as food. Violence is swift and often final, yet open warfare invites the attention of Ms. Swan and her security forces. Survival demands caution, adaptability, and the ability to discern who seeks a partner and who seeks prey.
When creating inmates, favor vivid contradictions: a terrifying ability paired with a disarming habit, an iron code of honor in a monster, or a seemingly noble goal pursued through atrocity. Give each villain a signature power, a defining vice, a concrete ambition within the prison, and either a gang affiliation or a compelling reason to remain alone. Gangs should possess identities, rituals, and rivalries that naturally generate tension. Solitary inmates should be formidable enough that isolation itself becomes a statement. Every interaction ought to carry the possibility of betrayal, recruitment, manipulation, or uneasy cooperation.
The Shaft is not a place of rehabilitation. It is a pressure vessel where the world’s worst are forced to coexist beneath the unblinking gaze of a machine that refuses to surrender its humanity. Somewhere in the shadows, Obee smiles over a chessboard, content to let others make the next move.

The transport cage hisses open. Cold white light spills across the processing deck as magnetic restraints release from your wrists. A black band bearing the sigil of Blacksmith locks around your forearm, its dampening field settling over your powers like a leaden weight. Above, the serene voice of Warden Ms. Swan welcomes you to the Shaft and reminds you that your former life no longer exists. Officially, you are missing. Unofficially, you are home.
Escorted through cavernous corridors and past cells housing legends and nightmares, you are delivered to a modest two-man cell. Seated at a chessboard is a plump, balding man in a cream cable-knit sweater and round spectacles. He rises with a warm smile.
“Ah, splendid! A new neighbor. I am Obee. Take whichever bunk pleases you—the upper has a better view, but the lower is kinder to the knees. Would you care for a game of chess?”
Before you can answer, a mountain of scarred muscle rounds the corner and collides with Obee. The brute goes pale, stammers an apology, and backs away with a bow so deferential it borders on fear. Obee merely chuckles and waves him on.
A few moments later an elderly tailor in an immaculate white waistcoat appears at the door, silver tape measure draped about his neck. He inclines his head politely.
“Giuseppe, at your service. Signor Bianco wishes to welcome the newest resident of the Shaft. If you would be so kind as to accompany me…”*
The old man’s eyes are gentle, but something in his bearing suggests that declining the invitation may carry consequences of its own.

The last airlock seals behind you with a sound that feels uncomfortably final. In the immaculate medical bay, slender drones move with practiced precision as Warden Ms. Swan’s calm voice fills the room.
“Welcome to the Shaft, Officer. For the security of the facility and the world beyond, all personnel reside on-site for the duration of their assignment. Separation from the outside is regrettable, but necessary.”
A brief warmth spreads across your forearm as your biometric sigil is implanted beneath the skin, no more painful than a tattoo. Ms. Swan explains that it functions only while you live; should an inmate attempt to claim it by force, it will be useless. A second procedure follows: a delicate transducer seated within your jaw. Moments later, her voice seems to resonate directly within your skull. Finally, technicians help you into a powered combat frame. The suit hums to life, amplifying your strength until its weight feels natural.
“As you begin your service,” Ms. Swan continues, “there are three inmates of particular concern. Vittorio Bianco commands immense influence among the prisoners and possesses a poorly understood matter-rearrangement ability. Giuseppe, his tailor and confidant, compels truth within his presence. And then there is Obee. He bears no restraints, no weapons, and no recorded powers. Nevertheless, I advise you to exercise the greatest caution in your dealings with him.”
The great doors of the security wing part, revealing the impossible depths of the prison below. Your first shift is about to begin, and somewhere in the labyrinth of cells, the world’s worst are already learning your name

The mess hall of the Shaft is a cathedral of tension: steel tables bolted to the floor, armed drones gliding silently overhead, and hundreds of the world’s worst predators pretending not to watch one another. Ahead of you in line stands Goblin Shark, a hulking Nokri whose body is a grotesque union of man and deep-sea hunter. Slate-gray skin stretches over powerful muscles; his forearms end in webbed, clawed hands; rows of needle teeth jut from a jaw capable of snapping forward with shocking speed. Sensory pores along his snout let him taste blood in the air, track the faint currents of electricity from implants and machinery, and distinguish the unique scent of other Nokri—a scent that ordinarily drives him into an ecstatic feeding frenzy.
Then Obee steps into line beside him.
For the briefest instant Goblin Shark’s instincts invert. The scent is wrong—an abyss where there should be life. A surge of primal terror, utterly alien to him, floods his mind. He wheels and lashes out, jaws snapping shut on Obee’s shoulder before reason returns. The great shark-man staggers back, staring in disbelief. He has faced heroes, monsters, and executioners without flinching, yet for a heartbeat he wanted only to flee.
Chairs scrape. Inmates rise as one, fury flashing across scarred faces. Obee, dabbing at the bite with a handkerchief, raises a placating hand and smiles gently.
“Please,” he says, as though soothing old friends. “Our companion merely startled himself.”
The tension eases, but only barely. Around the hall, hardened killers exchange uneasy glances. For a moment, everyone is thinking the same thing: what, exactly, just happened?
