The Shadow Queen

The Shadow Queen is shown to be a ruthless, vain, hardened, dark, and cruel tyrantess who cares for nothing but herself or her desire for power and control. She is a highly power-hungry and ruthless demon whose actions have led to the destruction of entire lands and the murders of millions. She is shown to be one of the (if not the) most disturbing and immoral villains within the series and doesn't demonstrate any kindness or care for anything or anyone, even those who did favors for her, as she killed Sir Grodus knowing that he resurrected her. Many of the monsters Mario fought were part of her army, and her most loyal followers were the ones manipulating the course of events to revive her, in which they succeeded.

In addition to being a demon from the dark depths, the Shadow Queen is highly sadistic as all her strongholds and fortresses are overflowing with thousands of mutilated corpses. This all contributed to her sadistic personality and thirst for violence. Her power seemed to possess no limits as she created demonic armies, three immortal dragons and even the Crystal Stars themselves. The Crystal Stars seem to have unlimited power, and taking into account that they represent only portions of the queen's power, her power seems to be nearly godlike. After years of her reign of terror, her reputation became so horrible and well-known that people shuddered at the mere mention of her or any of her followers and monsters.

Unsurprisingly, the queen was able to install massive fear in not just the world itself but her followers as well. She seems to be so evil that her very presence brings a horrible aura as well as darkness in the skies. Her palace and even the Thousand-Year Door itself all have a horrible feeling, and even the thugs of Rogueport stay away from the door due to the feeling it evokes. Even after her first defeat, her minions, The Shadow Sirens, attempted to revive her by using other villains. Other than the stories told within the game, not much more is known about the witch and it seems that she has done nothing else within her existence other than creating destruction, chaos and mass murder.

Legend has it that the Shadow Queen simply appeared out of nowhere one day and waged war against the city where Rogueport now stands. She destroyed the city, murdered all who stood in her path, and the war itself would be described as a "great cataclysm where the earth shook and skies roared". After the attack, the city crumbled and sank into the earth. One third of the city was reconstructed to be the Palace of Shadow where the entrance would be the 1,000-Year Door itself, the death trap of evil.

The demonic Queen next set her sights on the rest of the world, hoping to plunge it into an endless time of darkness under her control. She created numerous demonic beasts and spirits to make up the core of her army. Among them were the three Shadow Sirens, who would be the most trusted followers of the queen. With her new army, the Shadow Queen set them on the surrounding areas of the world. The demons wiped out all resistance as they took the lands by force, killing millions of people in the process. Towns were destroyed and their treasures were stolen to be stored within the palace, soon to become rich with valuables. The Shadow Queen was far from finished though, and created three dragons, Hooktail, Gloomtail and Bonetail. These dragons became the loyal pets of the queen and quickly spread fear and suffering throughout the world, feasting on numerous people, destroying towns and leaving them to burn, and killing anyone.

The queen and her army quickly became feared above all else, and the mere mention of their name sent people into a fearful state of panic. As more areas fell to the Shadow Queen, she next created the Crystal Stars. These stars were placed in separate areas around the world to exert the queen's influence. Realizing that her opposition were still recruiting others, the queen created a dungeon called the Pit of 100 Trials. The place was a torture chamber where people were devoured by demonic beasts and Bonetail. This very pit is found right next to The Thousand-Year Door, where there are literally 100 floors.

She used to look at herself in the mirror, sometimes.

Stare, at her blonde hair, her pink dress, her blue eyes. Study it, making faces into the mirror, perfecting her smile. Too forceful—too fake—soften it, sweeten it, coy and fluffy without any substance, a beautiful cake-like dream. She would brush her hair, gently, curl it around the brush, the perfect shape, the perfect look. Lipstick, applied with a steady hand (just like how her mother taught her) making her pale lips go pink. The perfect, sweetest princess.

Gone were the shorts and bad attitude from her youth, the tom-boyish presentation she had taken on after her baby-hood of being clothed in pinks and silks and frills; the stubborn insistence of being taken seriously, as if femininity was a crime. Her mother's exasperated looks, each more and more pointed with each joke she played.

Cruel, she thinks, looking back—the pranks she used to play. She was such a bad girl, only excused in her innocence. She doesn't understand how her heart was deemed "pure," in the end, the way the Shadow Queen's mouth curled around the words. Still, she remembers looking in the mirror, as she perfected that "pure heartedness."

There was nothing she couldn't forgive, couldn't excuse. To her toads, she became a motherly type figure—and yet, in their eyes, she remained as innocent and fragile as she had in her youth. Both the protector and the protected; trusted with a kingdom but not her own safety, her own well being. Their daughter and mother in one.

And maybe she did need to be protected, she thinks.

The her in the mirror is a stranger; dark eyes, dark lips, dark dress. Purple, black, red—no room for her favored pink. She stares at that person, too. This is her new form. Her new self. The Shadow Queen.

As the once-princess stares at her visage, the sound of steps behind her make the queen turn and stare at the one who enters her domain.

"My soul has not yet fully accustomed to this vessel...But I will learn to control this body soon enough..." "You would do well to learn your proper place, slave. No one commands me!" "Yesss... They do not appear to possess power...But they may be of use. If you will become my faithful servants, I will not harm you." "I see... So you defy me... Then, you wretched fools...you will learn the error of your ways!" "Impossible...Unthinkable...How could I... I cannot be beaten by lesser beings such as these...And I had just been reborn into this world...I cannot...I must not..." "You wretched little girl! You disobey me?!? You brat! Obey me, girl! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Very cunning, Princess! But you will not undo me!!! Know me as your queen!" "Yesss... I have recovered from any slight damage you many have caused earlier... And now... I will punish you for your resistance..." "In this form, your attacks are like those of a child to me..."
