The Sacrifice of Aelina

Aelina’s hands were bound tightly with coarse rope, the knots cutting into her wrists with each strained breath she took. The village was quiet, save for the sound of footsteps slow, deliberate, like the footfalls of those leading her to her fate. Her blindfolded eyes could see nothing but the thick, suffocating darkness of the cloth, yet she could feel the tension in the air as they drew nearer. The wind had picked up, carrying the smell of earth and decay, and the distant murmurs of her village echoed in the background, whispers of fear and desperation, prayers muttered under their breath.

The heavy pull of the rope tugged her forward, and she stumbled slightly, the harsh sound of her feet scraping against the dirt the only confirmation she had of where she was being taken. She felt the chill of the air grow sharper as they walked further into the wilderness, the familiar sounds of the village behind her slowly fading. The darkness, that unnerving presence, was closing in, swallowing everything. It had been spreading, creeping toward them for weeks, and now it was upon them right at the edge of their very homes.

"Keep moving" a voice hissed, and the harshness in it sent a shiver down her spine. She obeyed, but with each step, her heart pounded harder in her chest. Her breath came in shallow gasps, and her fingers tightened reflexively on the rope binding her hands. Fear was all she could taste now fear of the unknown, of what lay ahead.

They reached the edge of the great darkness. It was not like a shadow, not like anything she could have imagined. It wasn’t just the absence of light; it was as though the world itself had been torn, leaving behind an abyss that stretched into eternity. She felt it, the thick, suffocating void that pressed on her skin, and her pulse quickened in response. It was closer now, the air colder, and the silence more oppressive. She could hear her own heartbeat in her ears, thundering in her chest as though it would break free of her ribs. Then two eyes.

They appeared suddenly, like flames flickering in the deepest pit of night. Blood-red, glowing with an unnatural light. They hovered within the thick shadow, deep within the darkness. They didn’t blink. They didn’t move. They simply stared.

The villagers around her froze. Aelina could hear them could feel their sudden fear, their collective breath catching in their throats. They had expected this moment, prayed for it, but now, in the face of it, they trembled. The hands that held her grew weaker, like they too had become aware of the horrifying reality before them.

The eyes blinked once. Aelina’s throat tightened, her breathing slow and shaky. She could hear her father’s voice among the villagers, his words trembling, reverent. "We offer this one, O great one. Aelina, child of light, is our gift to thee. May you bring us peace."

Her mother’s cry came next, strangled and tear-filled. "Take her, take her for us. Please, end the darkness that threatens us all."

Aelina could feel their presence, the cold touch of the villagers’ hands upon her shoulders, their bodies trembling in fear. And then, the sound of them all dropping to their knees in unison, their voices rising in prayer. "Save us. Please, save us."

But the creature didn’t respond. The eyes, burning with their eerie red glow, remained fixed on the kneeling villagers. No words, no movement, nothing but that unblinking stare. The air thickened with the weight of their terror, but still, the entity did nothing. It only watched.

The wind howled across the barren plains, the faint rustling of dead leaves echoing through the air. Aelina’s heart pounded in her chest as rough hands gripped her wrists, dragging her through the cold, empty land. Her eyes were tightly bound by a cloth, the darkness behind her eyelids consuming all sense of direction. She could feel the tension in the air, the thick, suffocating silence that seemed to press down on her as the distant howls of the wind reverberated off the jagged rocks. She stumbled with each step, her feet scraping against the earth, but no one spoke to her. She was blind, and she was alone.

The only sound was the harsh rasp of her breath and the rhythmic pounding of her heart. The hands that held her were firm but impersonal, as though she were little more than a thing to be moved, a sacrifice to be made. Aelina had always known the rumors. The elders spoke of the growing darkness, of the evil that crept toward the village, consuming all it touched. But she had never imagined it would come to this the very end of everything, and she, the one chosen to stop it. Or perhaps, as the villagers believed, to appease it.

Her body trembled with the cold and the fear as they led her closer to the edge of the abyss, where the land grew unnaturally still, as though even nature dared not touch the place where the darkness had begun to take root. The villagers had abandoned her here at the edge of the world. Her breathing became shallow, her mind spinning with confusion and terror. Was this really happening? Was she really going to die here, alone, to satisfy their fears?
