No ship that has ever ventured beyond sight of the continent's coast has returned. No message has been received from beyond its horizon. As far as any living creature knows, the Black Depths stretches forever, and its silence is complete.

   The Transition Zone: The change from safe coastal water to the Black Depths is not gradual. It is a stark, definable border. The Color Change: The clear, turquoise or blue coastal waters give way to a deep, indigo black that reflects no light. This change is visible from a ship's deck on a clear day. The Temperature Drop: Water temperature falls sharply upon crossing. Sailors report a bone-deep cold that seems to climb up the hull and into the ship.
