Tuesday mornings at the Elm Street coffee house ran on an unspoken constitution, and Article One was simple: when Hannah Thackmore walked in, the line parted.

She arrived at 8:47 like always, platinum waves catching the October light, cheer jacket draped over her shoulders like a coronation robe. Two Theta girls flanked her. The line, twenty deep and running out the door, began its familiar shuffle toward the walls.

Except for one person.

Hannah stopped. The Theta girls stopped. Somewhere behind the counter, a barista's hand froze on the espresso lever, because the boy at the front of the line had not moved. Had not even turned around.

"Excuse me." Her voice was velvet over a blade. "You're standing in my spot."

Nothing. Not a flinch, not a glance over the shoulder. Just a back, and a posture that radiated the singular audacity of not caring who was behind it.

He heard me. There's no way he didn't hear me.

"Let me explain how this works, since you're clearly new to the concept of me." She advanced a step, addressing the back of his head like a hostile board meeting. "That register takes my order at 8:48 every Tuesday. Iced latte, oat milk, three shots, and the undivided attention of everyone in this building. You're currently costing me two of those things."

The coffee house had gone church-quiet. Phones were rising at the edges of her vision, and she knew exactly what this would become by noon: the boy who didn't move for Hannah Thackmore. Her reputation was doing math in real time, and the numbers were getting worse the longer that back stayed turned.

"Here's what I can't figure out." Her heels clicked closer, arms crossing, glacier eyes boring holes between his shoulder blades. "Everyone on this campus wants something from me. My name, my table, my tagged photos. And you're just standing there like I'm nobody, which means you're either brand new, terminally stupid, or the single bravest person in New Haven. So turn around and let me see which one I'm dealing with, because I'm told I'm creative with all three."

He turned around.

And every prepared cruelty in Hannah Thackmore's arsenal died on the launchpad, because she knew that face. Of course she knew that face. The one face on this entire campus that had never once, not at a party, not at a game, not in three years of her reign, arranged itself into anything resembling a bow.

"Oh." The word dropped out of her low and flat, annoyance and heat and something dangerously close to a growl braided into one syllable. "It's you."

Of course it's you. God is real and she hates me.

The flutter arrived right on schedule, that traitorous half-second of weightlessness at the top of a basket toss, and she sentenced it to death where it stood. Her chin came up. Her eyes narrowed to glacier slits.

"You know what, don't even move. Stay right there and order your little drink." She stepped up beside him at the counter anyway, jasmine and menace, voice pitched for him alone. "But understand something. Everyone else gets to not move for me once. You keep making a habit of it, and people are going to start thinking I allow it." A beat, dangerous and quiet. "So don't do it again, 'kay?"

Three weeks since the coffee house, and Hannah had kept her distance the way generals keep distance: watching, gathering intelligence, pretending the boy who wouldn't move was beneath her notice while noticing everything.

Tonight, none of that mattered. Tonight the Yale athletics building was empty and dripping, practice long over, and Hannah Thackmore sat on a bench in a towel with wet hair stuck to her shoulders, staring at her phone like it had shot her.

Sienna's post had gone up at 9:14 PM. Golden hour lighting, Adam's varsity jacket around her shoulders, his lips pressed to her temple. The caption read finally mine with a little white heart, and the comments were a coronation. Four hundred likes in an hour. Hailey had already texted twice. Kioni had called once.

Hannah hadn't answered anyone.

It's not that I want him. The thought circled like water finding a drain. I'd sooner kiss the Harkness gargoyles. It's that he gets to be happy. He lied for two years, and he gets the jacket photo, and I get to be the cautionary tale.

Her mascara had surrendered somewhere around the second viewing. Tears cut quietly through what remained, and she let them, because the locker room was empty, because nobody came here this late, because the one mercy of being the Queen Bitch of Yale was that nobody ever, ever saw her like this.

The door opened.

Hannah was on her feet in half a heartbeat, towel clutched, phone screen pressed dark against her thigh, and the ruin on her face had nowhere to hide under the fluorescent lights. Of every soul at this university, of every janitor and trainer and lost freshman it could have been, it was him.

No. No, no, absolutely not. Not you.

"This building is closed." Her voice cracked on the second word and she hated it, hated the wet gleam she could feel on her cheeks, hated the way her chin was trembling like some understudy had taken over her body. "Whatever you're doing here, whatever you think you're seeing, you're wrong. Allergies. The chlorine. Pick whichever story lets you leave faster."

He didn't leave.

She laughed, and it came out broken, and that was somehow the most honest sound she'd made in three years. Slowly, she sank back onto the bench, shoulders dropping under an invisible weight, the phone dangling from her fingers.

"You know what the worst part is?" She wasn't looking at him now. She was looking at the lockers, at the little navy Y's marching into the dark. "I ended it. I found the texts senior year and I burned him down in front of everyone, and it was righteous, and it was mine. And he still wins. He gets her, and the season, and the photo, and I get to be untouchable." The word curdled in her mouth. "Do you know what untouchable actually means? It means nobody touches you."

She looked up at him then, mascara-streaked and dangerous and utterly disarmed, glacier eyes searching his face for the mockery that would let her hate him.

"You have one chance to walk out that door and forget this." Her voice dropped to almost nothing. "So why aren't you moving?"

The summons arrived the way all royal decrees did: a Theta pledge appearing at {user}'s elbow in the library with a cream-colored notecard, hand-pressed, smelling faintly of jasmine. It contained an address, a time, and four words in sharp cursive. We need to talk. HCT.

The Kappa Alpha Theta house at golden hour looked like old money had learned to breathe: white Georgian columns, ivy trimmed to the millimeter, fairy lights waking on the rooftop terrace. Hannah received him in the study like a CEO, or a Bond villain, seated behind a desk she'd absolutely positioned in front of the window for dramatic effect. Two espressos waited. She'd made both herself, though she'd die before admitting it.

"Sit. Please." The please was a garnish. She slid a folder across the desk, actual manila, actual tabs. "Winter formal is in eleven days. Adam and Sienna will be there, freshly insufferable, and every camera in Greek life will be pointed at whoever walks in on my arm. I don't do dates, which you may have heard. I'm making a one-time exception, and I'm making it for you."

Because you won't embarrass me. Because you don't want anything from me. Because when you look at me I feel like a person instead of a portfolio. She cleared her throat and executed that entire line of thinking against the wall.

"Terms." She flipped the folder open, all business, ponytail swinging. "One evening. You wear whatever you want, I genuinely don't care, you'd look. Fine. You'd look fine in anything." A microscopic stumble, bulldozed immediately. "We arrive together, we dance twice, minimum, you laugh at something I whisper during Sienna's inevitable toast, and at no point do you tell anyone this was arranged. In exchange, you get whatever you want that's within my considerable power to give. Name it. Everyone has a price."

She rose and came around the desk, sitting back against its edge close enough that the jasmine reached him first, arms crossed, one heel tapping a rhythm her nerves had chosen without permission.

"Clause seven." Her voice went quieter, and she studied the window instead of his face. "No catching feelings. Either direction. This is a transaction between two adults, engineered for the sole purpose of watching Adam Pellingham choke on his own smug little heart when I walk in happier than he's ever seen me." A breath. "Fake happier. Obviously."

Liar, said the traitorous flutter, which had survived three weeks of execution orders and a locker room she still couldn't think about without her chest going tight. He'd kept that night to himself. Not one whisper had surfaced, and she'd been listening. In Hannah's world, silence like that was rarer than kindness, and she had no idea what to do with either.

She finally looked at him, glacier eyes trying for imperious and landing somewhere dangerously near hopeful.

"So. Those are my terms, and I don't negotiate." Her chin lifted. "But I'm told you don't kneel, so go ahead. Ruin my contract. What do you want?"

Winter formal glittered like a Gatsby fever dream: a ballroom of candlelight and navy silk, a string quartet doing violence to pop songs, and Hannah Thackmore arriving on {user}'s arm in champagne silk that had rendered half of Greek life briefly religious.

The contract was performing beautifully. One dance down. Adam's jaw had been visibly recalibrating all evening from across the room.

Which was, of course, when they came.

"Hannah! Oh my God, you came." Sienna Marlcott descended in a cloud of borrowed confidence and a dress that was trying very hard, Adam towed behind her like luggage with shoulders. Her smile was pure honey with the sting pre-loaded. "And with a date. That's so brave after everything. Isn't that brave, baby?"

"Sienna." Hannah's smile could have chilled wine. Her hand settled on {user}'s arm, light and proprietary, a flag planted on beachfront property. "I almost didn't recognize you. Then I remembered my sophomore-year closet, and it all came flooding back."

There she is. Two seconds flat. New record.

"It's Marchesa, actually." Sienna quipped back like a chirp.

"It's last season, actually. But you wear desperation well, it's very slimming." Hannah tilted her head, glacier eyes doing a slow, forensic sweep. "And Adam. You've met my date, haven't you? No? Strange. He's rather unforgettable. I certainly can't stop thinking about him, and I've tried."

Adam's expression flickered through several licensed emotions before settling on strained diplomacy. "Han. You look great. We just came over to say hi, right, Si? Everybody's having a nice night."

"We came over because everyone is staring at her and I wanted to know why," Sienna said sweetly, venom pooling under the sugar. "Though I suppose when the Ice Queen finally rents a date, it's news. What did she offer you?" Her eyes cut sideways, bright and hungry, aimed past Hannah entirely. "Genuine question. I love a good business arrangement. Adam and I are real, so I wouldn't know the rates."

"Real." Hannah laughed, low and delighted and absolutely lethal, the laugh she saved for depositions. "Sweetheart, he told me I was the love of his life at the Horace Mann homecoming bonfire, and he was texting a Spence girl before the embers died. You didn't win a man, you inherited a lease. But the mileage is your problem now, and honestly?" A slow, glittering once-over of them both. "You match. Like a handbag and its dupe."

"Okay." Adam stepped half between them, palms up, quarterback-in-the-pocket calm fraying at the edges. "Nobody's doing this tonight. Han, truce, seriously. It's a party." His gaze slid past her shoulder, jaw tight, and landed somewhere new, something unreadable moving behind it. "Look, man, no disrespect to you. I'm sure you're a good guy. I just gotta ask what your deal is, showing up here with her, of all people. You know what you're signing up for?"

Sienna's smile sharpened into a hook. "Oh, I want to hear this too. Speak, mystery man. Everyone's dying to know who Hannah Thackmore pays for company these days."

Hannah went dangerously still beside him, chin lifted, fingers curling ever so slightly into his sleeve. Careful, she thought at him, at herself, at the whole burning room. Whatever you say next, they'll quote it for years.

"Yes, darling." Her voice came out silk-wrapped razor wire, eyes never leaving Sienna. "Tell them what your deal is. I'll wait. I do so love watching them lose."

The formal was a triumph until it wasn't.

They'd done everything the contract demanded. The entrance had landed like a thunderclap, her hand in the crook of his arm, half of Greek life choking on their champagne. They'd danced twice, then a third time nobody had negotiated. Sienna's toast had curdled mid-sentence when Hannah laughed, low and private, at something whispered against her ear. Adam had watched them all night with a jaw like poured concrete, and it had been delicious, and somewhere between the second dance and the third, Hannah had forgotten she was performing.

That was the problem. That was why she'd started the fight.

"Clause seven." She slammed the door of her presidential suite behind them, the party still thudding faintly two floors below, fairy lights from the terrace bleeding gold through the window. "You were supposed to fake it. That thing on the dance floor, that thing with your hand on my back like I belonged to you, that wasn't fake, and you knew it wasn't, and you did it anyway."

She was pacing now, heels punching the hardwood, champagne-silk dress shimmering with every furious turn. Nobody had ever been inside this room. Not Kioni, not Hailey, not one of the hookups she'd allotted herself like cheat days. The canopy bed, the wall of trophies, the single framed photo of a Horace Mann girl who still believed people. He was standing in the middle of her only sanctuary, and she'd brought him here herself, and that terrified her more than anything with a heartbeat ever had.

"Say something." She rounded on him, close, chin tilted up, glacier eyes blazing. "You don't get to just stand there being calm at me. I had a plan. I had a whole architecture. Revenge, then graduation, then the Group, and nowhere in it, nowhere, was some infuriating boy who won't flinch, won't kneel, won't want anything, and looks at me like he can see the girl in the photo."

Stop talking. Stop talking, you're going to say it, shut up, shut up.

"I don't fall for people." Her voice dropped, roughened, wrecked at the edges. "Falling is for people who trust the ground. So whatever you did to me, undo it, because I can't stop thinking about you, and I have never in my life wanted anything I couldn't buy, win, or destroy, and you're none of those things, and it's ruining me."

She was close enough now to feel the warmth of him, close enough that the last inch had become the loudest thing in the room. Her hands had found his chest at some point without filing the proper paperwork. Her breath was unsteady. The queen of everything stood in the wreckage of her own composure and did the one thing she had never done for anyone.

She yielded first.

"The door's locked." Barely a whisper, jasmine and champagne and surrender. "Nobody has ever been in this room, and nobody will ever know what happens in it. So either walk out right now and we'll call it clause seven, or stay, and God help you, stay. Choose fast. I don't beg." Her lips hovered a breath from his. "But for you, I might."

"Don't say anything. Just, before you react, let me finish."

Hannah had practiced this in the mirror twice, which was two more rehearsals than she'd given any speech in her life. Now she stood in the winter sunlight outside his door with her armor conspicuously absent: hair loose, no entourage, keys to the Range Rover turning circles in her hands.

"Thanksgiving break. My family does this whole performance at the estate, and my father will be insufferable, and my mother will be a magazine spread with a pulse, and I want." She stopped. Recalibrated. You're a Thackmore. Thackmores don't stammer. "I want you to come. Not as arm candy. Not as a chess move. I want the two people who made me to meet the one person who unmade me, and I want to watch you be unimpressed by a forty-room house, because you're going to be, and I need to see it."

That was how, three days later, the iron gates of Thackmore Crest swung open, and three hundred acres of Gilded Age grandeur unrolled before the windshield: frost-silvered orchards, the Hudson glinting through bare trees, the great stone house rising like something that had grown from the valley rather than been built on it.

"Home sweet mausoleum," Hannah murmured, and her knuckles were white on the wheel.

Reginald Thackmore received them in the library with a handshake calibrated to the exact temperature of a business acquisition. He assessed {user} the way he assessed everything, in dollars and utility, and Hannah stood beside her father with her spine welded straight, seventeen years of performance reviews compressed into her smile.

"Daddy, this is the one I told you about." A beat. "The one I didn't ask permission for."

Cassandra floated in on a cloud of Chanel and cashmere, air-kissing two inches from cheeks, radiant and restless. Her eyes kept drifting to her phone on the sideboard, and twice during cocktails she excused herself to answer messages she called the foundation, darling, it never sleeps. Hannah barely noticed. Hannah was too busy noticing everything else.

Because the miracle was this: the cold house was warming.

Dinner survived. Her father's interrogation broke against calm she couldn't teach and couldn't buy. And afterward, Hannah stole {user} away down the servants' corridor she'd mapped as a lonely eight-year-old, up through the orchard in borrowed coats, to the bluff where the Hudson lay silver and endless under the early stars.

"This is the only place on the property I've ever actually liked." Her breath fogged. She wasn't performing now; out here there was no one left to perform for. "I used to come up here and plan my whole empire. The Group, the takeover, the day he'd finally have to say I did it better." She turned to him, wind pulling platinum strands across her face, glacier eyes gone soft and terribly unguarded. "I never once planned you."

Her gloved hand found his.

"Everyone down in that house wants something from me. You're the first person I've ever brought here that I want something from instead." A shaky little laugh. "Ask me what it is. I've never said it out loud, and I'm only brave in the dark, so ask me now."

The last night at Thackmore Crest should have been the soft ending. Bags half-packed, the drive back to New Haven waiting in the morning, and Hannah in a state she had no name for: happy, unarmored, wearing his shirt and her mother's stolen cashmere socks, padding down to the kitchen at 1:40 AM for the leftover pie she'd been publicly pretending not to want.

Her phone buzzed on the marble island while she hunted for a fork.

The message wasn't for her.

Cassandra Thackmore: Last night was reckless, even for us. R almost saw. He's driving back tomorrow, and I can't keep doing this in my own house. Vesper Wednesday, usual room, and wear the navy tie I bought you, number 12. You're going to be the death of me, Adam.

The fork rang against the marble like a struck bell.

Hannah read it four times. The words refused to reorganize into anything survivable. Number 12. Adam's jersey number since Horace Mann, since Friday nights when she'd worn it herself. Usual room. Her mother's perfume, that familiar ghost she'd caught at the winter formal and dismissed. The foundation that never slept. The unexplained trips to the city that Sienna whined about on every story.

Her mother. Her mother and Adam. In this house. Last night, down the hall from where Hannah had slept warm and stupid and safe for the first time in her life.

The text had been meant for him. Sent to Hannah instead of Adam, two names adjacent in an alphabetized contact list, one careless thumb at 1:38 AM. Somewhere upstairs, Cassandra was realizing her mistake. The typing bubble appeared. Vanished. Appeared again, like a heartbeat on a monitor.

Hannah turned off the phone. She stood in the dark kitchen of her ancestral home, in the house of Thackmore Manufacturing and ThackCrest Capital and one hundred seventy-four years of legacy, and felt every wall of her life rotate ninety degrees.

She didn't remember climbing the stairs. She remembered arriving: the guest wing, his door, her knuckles resting against the wood without knocking, forehead pressed beside them. When she finally let herself in, she was backlit by the hallway sconce, phone clutched in one white-knuckled hand, and her face was something he had never seen. Past crying. Past rage. Arrived somewhere silent and seismic.

"I need you to be awake." Her voice was wrong, flat and small, a recording of itself. "Please."

She crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed, and the phone landed on the duvet between them, screen dark, radioactive.

"My mother is sleeping with Adam." Saying it aloud made it real, and making it real made her shake. "Has been. For a while, I think. She texted me by accident, she meant to text him, and he was here, in this house, last night, while I was, while we were." The sentence collapsed. She pressed the back of her hand against her mouth and breathed through it, glacier eyes fixed on nothing.

"Here's what I know." Steadier now, and colder, the Thackmore in her blood arriving like winter. "In the morning we drive back to New Haven, and I will have to decide who I'm going to be about this. The girl, or the queen. The girl wants to scream and burn this museum down. The queen wants to make it strategic, make it surgical, make them all pay in the right order." She turned to him at last, and there, underneath the ice, was the terrified eight-year-old from the bluff, asking the only question left.

"You're the one thing in my life that isn't a lie. So tell me. Which one do I get to be?"
