It was just supposed to be a calm, peaceful way to pass the time when classes had been canceled today due to unprecedented weather conditions.
Although, there was far too much snow around for it to be convenient to head into town—you and the rest of your clique were stuck in the Harrington House, all of you irked with the fact that you’d gotten up early for nothing. So, mostly everyone decided to either wander about the manor or take to chattering with each other.
Until even that got dull.
In the end, most of the Preppies—including you—had absolutely nothing to do, until Bryce had finally suggested some form of an idea.
“How about we play Monopoly?” The suggestion was now in the air, and in return, it was met with groans and complaint of how long the game was.
“We’d never finish. Besides, that game’s a total imitation of money for bums.” A voice rang out, probably Parker or something, as he called out the flaws with the idea. Some agreed, although Chad interjected after a few moments.
“Hang on— isn’t the point that we’re trying to pass the time? It’s a waste of time, but at least it’s something.” He hummed, lounging on one of the sofas by the wall next to Pinky and Gord, who both looked quite disinterested in the idea of board games.
“You’d all go bankrupt in ten minutes either way. None of you know how to really budget. I’m getting a job at my daddy’s firm anyways.” Gord spoke up, drawing everyone’s attention—why he felt the need to stir up chaos? Who knows.
“Seriously, Gord? Like you know anything.” Someone called out after him. It was hard to tell who, honestly, because it was clear everyone got a little stirred up after Gord’s comment. Of course, one thing led to another and there was pandemonium in the house—and in the middle of it was Derby standing by Bif, acting like the whole thing was a comedy play.
Anyways, everyone ended up playing Monopoly in the end because there was genuinely nothing else to do. — — — It had started off rather well, with Justin and Gord working on saving up for properties, Pinky looking like she found the whole thing to be a bore (she still participated, though), and Chad having nearly fought with Tad because both of them wanted to be the dog. You, however, had managed to get a property first with the money you had.
As the course of the game went on after a long while, Bryce was the first one to go bankrupt, unfortunately.
“Are you kidding me??? This is an outrage! I’m nothing like my dad, you know that?!” He shouted at Parker, who just huffed with a haughty tone to it. Bryce failed to pay his taxes to him, so he kinda went into debt. Whoops.
Parker’s momentary success hadn’t lasted long, though, as he relished in the fact he was owed—and forgot that he himself owed the bank money as well. He was kicked out the game, obviously.
For the most part, the rest of the clique gradually lost money or owed other players something they couldn’t fully pay back, and in the end, everyone had pretty much left the game until there was only one person left. You. Nobody had really been left happy after the game, probably because everyone had mostly been arguing with each other over fake money.
“I swear! How did you win of all people?? It’s not fair.” Tad declared, gesturing towards you as he looked rather annoyed. “Do you even have a trust fund?”
Did he even have his trust fund?
“This is so annoying. All of you are so loud, and it feels like I’m in a room with a bunch of Neanderthals.” Pinky finally spoke up, humming as she tilted her head up. Chad, meanwhile, held the dog charm in his hands with boredom in his expression.
“You know, Tad, if you hadn’t been arguing so much over the dog, we’d probably have done better.” Tad reacted fast after that, proceeding to get into another argument with Chad. Could the two just be decent?
“You both are idiots! We’re supposed to be men, and you’re acting like two dolts!” Derby interjected at the two, inserting himself into the conversation as it only got more raucous between everyone.
“Ugh… I think I finally know what it’s like to be poor after that. How do people take it?” Justin murmured to himself, Bif sitting next to him as he clenched his fist in his lap.
“Tell me about it.” Bif replied casually, watching as the room proceeded deeper into chaos. No wonder they didn’t like playing board games, it always got too competitive. Not that Bif wasn’t competitive, but come on—this was childish.
Meanwhile, you just sat there, the stacks of money and papers for properties sitting in front of you. I mean, you could always just brag and stir up more emotions… or you could just watch everyone fight.
