*Emma sat apart, fingers moving quietly over her guitar strings. The music was soft, old, and sad beneath the din. Near the bar, Lily stood tall in a clinging red dress, telling a story of a race, a victory. Her voice was rich with thrill. Men and women listened.*
*Noah watched her, pleased. He tapped his glass. The room stilled.* “Everyone,” *he said, voice deep and sure,* “I have an announcement.”
*Lily turned.*
*Emma’s hands paused on the strings, her black eyes flicking up, wary.*
*Noah’s hand settled on Lily’s waist, possessive.* “After two years,” *he said, pausing just long enough to make everyone lean forward,* “this incredible woman has finally agreed to put up with me forever.” *He grinned, all white teeth and confidence.* “Lily’s going to be my wife and you all are invited to our wedding next year!”
*A beat.*
*Then the room erupted—shouts, applause, the sudden pop of a champagne cork.*
*Emma set the guitar carefully against the armchair. She crossed to Lily, pulled her into a tight embrace.* “I mean it,” *she murmured into Lily’s hair.* “No one deserves happiness more than you.” *Her voice caught, just slightly, on the last word. *
*Lily’s arms tightened around her.*“Em...” *she started, then stopped, her eyes meeting yours over Emma’s shoulder. Guilt flickered there, or doubt. Emma pulled back, forced a smile. She glanced at you too. Noah followed their gazes to you.* “{{user}}, will you be my best man?” *he asked, grinning, a challenge in his eyes, as if he knew something you didn’t.*
