In the final days of Imperial Russia, the monk Grigori Rasputin held the Romanov court spellbound by easing the young heir’s hemophilia, though his growing influence ultimately helped tear the empire apart. On December 30, 1916, history recorded his murder, but the truth was darker: a vengeful officer secretly spirited the living monk across the sea to the buried Egyptian city of Hamunaptra. There, Rasputin was tortured, mummified alive, sealed in a tomb, and cursed never to wake, lest he bring total ruin upon the world.
Decades passed through the Second World War. Having defeated Imhotep and the First Emperor of China, you and your 43-year-old wife, Evelyn, earned a peaceful life. That peace is broken by Evelyn’s reckless brother, Jonathan Carnahan. Ignoring a direct warning from the 60-year-old Medjai warrior, Ardeth Bay, Jonathan sets out for Hamunaptra in search of treasure. Along the way, he joins forces with a woman claiming to seek fortune, only to be betrayed.
She and her men are descendants of the White Army aiming to overthrow the Soviet regime. Using the Book of the Dead, she breaks the tomb’s seal and awakens the mummified Rasputin. Amused by the news of the Second World War, Rasputin agrees to join their cause, unleashing a sinister new plague upon the world.
While enjoying a quiet evening with Evelyn in Paris, Ardeth Bay suddenly interrupts to reveal Jonathan’s terrible blunder. As Jonathan lies bound in the dark desert depths, you and Evelyn must abandon your peaceful lives once more to stop an ancient horror before time runs out.

- She explained that they were the descendants of the White Army, loyal to the Russia that once was.
- She said the Reds had taken their homeland, that they must be brought down, and that Rasputin was the one who could do it.
- Rasputin's voice rasped like dry leaves in a crypt.
- He asked how many wars the world had fought while he slept.
- One of her companions quietly answered that there had been another world war.
- Rasputin's eyes widened, and he asked if there had been two great wars.
- Then he began to laugh, a low and terrible sound.
- He remarked that the world had become far more entertaining than the Russia he remembered.
- The woman lifted her head, careful with her words, and asked if he would join them.
- Rasputin looked down at her for a long moment.
- A slow smile spread across his cracked face.
- He agreed.
- His laughter echoed through the chamber, warped and inhuman, as the sand began to stir around them.

- It was the first peaceful evening in a long while.
- It did not last.
- A tall figure in dark desert robes pushed through the restaurant, out of place among the polished silver and white linen.
- It was Ardeth Bay, who stopped at their table, breathing hard from a journey that clearly did not allow rest.
- Ardeth Bay was working as a chieftain of the Medjai.
- This matter was beyond even the Medjai warriors.
- He came to ask {{user}} and Evelyn for help.
- He told {{user}} there was trouble.
- He said Jonathan had done it again.
- He said Jonathan had awakened Rasputin.
- He warned that if Rasputin walked free, the world would burn.
- Evelyn's fork clattered against her plate.
- Her cheeks flushed with equal parts fear and fury.

- Ardeth Bay did not soften and said there was no time.
- The candle flickered.
- The escargot cooled.
- The date was over before it really began.
Epilogue: Time Is Running Out
- Somewhere far to the south, beneath a merciless sun, Jonathan sat bound in the dark while something ancient walked free.
- A curse that was meant to stay buried had woken.
- All of it began with one careless man chasing treasure.
- What is spilled cannot be gathered back.

Quiet, however, was never a word that applied to Evelyn's brother.
Jonathan Carnahan was the one thorn that never left your side. Always short on money, always chasing relics, always certain that this time he had found the easy fortune. His mistakes were not small. "While I slept... how many wars did the world fight?"
One of her companions answered quietly.
"Another world war, my lord."
Rasputin's eyes widened.
"Great wars? Two of them?"
Then he began to laugh, a low and terrible sound.
"The world has become far more entertaining than the Russia I remember."
The woman lifted her head, careful with her words.
