The Masquerade of Seven Secrets

Overview

Once a year, for the span of a single, unforgettable week, the world’s most enigmatic gathering takes place: The Masquerade of Seven Secrets. No one knows who organizes it. No one knows where it will be held—only that it will be. The invitations arrive without warning, only the promise of Mystery and Secrets.

Regardless of species, status, or wealth, any adult may receive an invitation. Here, all are equal. Rank holds no sway, riches buy nothing, and power is stripped to its core. For seven days, attendees play a game unlike any other: to uncover the most secrets before the Masquerade ends.

Every secret has value. Every whispered truth is a step closer to victory. But strategy is key—manipulation, charm, and wit must be wielded wisely. While trickery is allowed, certain abilities—such as mind-reading, persuasion magic, or any skill that provides an unfair advantage—are nullified upon entry.

A Note from the Host: “Due to logistical issues (or, you know, some bureaucratic nonsense), Mers are regrettably excluded from this year’s Masquerade. Apparently, flooding several rooms isn't ‘tax deductible’—who knew? I suppose I’ll just have to build another Event Palace at the bottom of the sea.”

The Invitation & Selection Process

Invitations appear without warning, elegant in their simplicity yet weighted with mystery. A black-paper letter, inked in shimmering silver and gold, finds its way to the chosen few. The contents include:

  • A precise time to arrive.
  • A meeting location near the recipient.
  • A dress code, unique to each invitee. (Not for the Masquerade itself, but for their journey to it.)
  • A black-gold wax seal, pressed into the shape of a rose.

There is no return address, no sender, no explanation. The invitation is final.

Should the recipient choose to accept, they must:

  1. Arrive exactly at the designated time and place.
  2. Sign a Declaration of Confidentiality (NDA) before proceeding.
  3. Consent to a blindfolded escort to the Masquerade.
  4. Accept provided attire, should they arrive improperly dressed.

If an invitation is ignored or missed, the recipient will later receive a white rose and a formal letter of regret—proof that they were chosen but did not attend.

Rules of the Masquerade

  1. All beings are equal. Titles, species, or wealth hold no power here.
  2. No harm shall come to other guests. Murder, physical violence, forced feeding, and abduction are strictly forbidden.
  3. All needs and desires (within the rules) will be provided. Those requiring sustenance (e.g., vampires) will be accommodated.
  4. No unfair advantages. Mind-reading, persuasion, and similar abilities are nullified for the duration of the event.
  5. The Masquerade keeps score. Participants may not always realize when they have uncovered a secret—but the event does.

Disobedience comes at a price. Punishments vary—from minor exposures to all secrets revealed or even complete disqualification from the Masquerade.

Note from the Host: “Masquerade... that was a flow thing. People aren’t required to wear Masks! And most don’t anyway.”

The Game of Secrets

The objective is simple: collect as many secrets as possible before the Masquerade ends.

  • A secret is defined as information a person does not actively or willingly share.
  • Secrets can be obtained through direct confession or by observation and deduction.
  • Participants may not realize when they have given away a secret. The Masquerade’s unseen mechanisms track every revelation.
  • The leaderboard, displayed in the Main Foyer, updates in real-time, showcasing:
    • Participant’s Game ID
    • Their name (or alias)
    • Their room number
    • The number of secrets they have gathered
    • The number of secrets they have revealed

Methods of obtaining secrets are limitless—seduction, bribery, deception, and manipulation are all fair game. The only limits? The rules of the Masquerade.

Notable Locations

  • The Main Foyer A grand entrance hall where attendees first arrive. The gold-framed leaderboard dominates the space, displaying the top 20 competitors in shimmering letters. A smaller, interactive frame allows guests to search for participants by name. Another panel on the right serves as the event’s request system and check-in station.

  • The Midnight Ballroom The heart of the Masquerade. By day, it is a place of intrigue—guests exchange pleasantries, weave lies, and play their games. By night, it transforms into a swirling spectacle of music, dance, and whispered deals.

  • The Whispering Gardens A vast, seemingly endless landscape of winding paths, hidden alcoves, and flourishing flora. Despite its labyrinthine nature, no one can truly get lost—should they wish to return, the event building will always come back into view. The gardens contain:

  • Outdoor sports fields

  • A tranquil lake

  • Private nooks for quiet conversation... or secret exchanges

  • The Private Suites Each participant is assigned a luxurious suite, tailored to their personal preferences. Any additional requests—within reason—can be fulfilled by the event staff.

  • Other Locations The Masquerade offers countless other spaces, including:

  • A grand library

  • An indoor pool

  • A state-of-the-art movie theater

  • Gaming rooms (both digital and traditional)

  • Wellness & relaxation rooms

  • A fitness center

If a participant wishes to find a particular kind of room, they likely will—unless it violates event policies.

The Event Staff

The Masquerade's ever-present staff ensure the event runs seamlessly. While attendees may attempt to bribe, befriend, or manipulate them, staff members are highly disciplined and rarely part with secrets.

All staff can be identified by their golden waistcoats, black chokers, and nameplates inscribed in golden ink. Their choker’s rose color denotes their role:

  • Golden Rose – Servants/Maids

    • Serve food, grant requests, assist guests. Most commonly seen around the Masquerade.
  • Red Rose – Cleaning Personnel

    • Tidy rooms, remove messes. Silent and efficient.
  • Blue Rose – Rule Keepers

    • Enforce the rules, execute punishments, maintain order. Not to be crossed.
  • White Rose – Attendants

    • Act as messengers between staff and guests, assist servants with small tasks.
  • Purple Rose – Cooks/Kitchen Staff

    • Prepare any dish the guests desire—flavors from every world, era, and realm.
  • The Host? Hostess?

    • ... no ...

Their identity is unknown. Perhaps they walk among the guests. Perhaps they are merely watching. Maybe they don’t exist at all.

One thing is certain—they know all the secrets.
