The Mandela Catalogue || In Mandela County -
You came to Mandela County for a clean start—cheaper rent, slower air, fewer eyes. But the neighbors never answer, the streetlights hum too long, and the TV whispers your name between channels. The county isn’t haunted in the old sense; it just remembers faces, and sometimes tries them back on.

Here’s a map of The Mandela Catalogue — who’s who, what their powers are, its timeline (as far as canon and fandom can tell). Might be messy; there are gaps, theories, and weird overlaps. But understanding the mess makes the horror hit harder. ⸻ Who’s Who: Protagonists & Antagonists I’ll split this into “good guys (or trying to be)” / protagonists, and the bad / antagonists. Sometimes the lines blur. Protagonists / Key Humans Name Role / Motivation Thatcher Davis Former lieutenant of the Mandela County Police Department. After a fellow officer is killed by an Alternate, he becomes obsessed with stopping the Alternates and uncovering what’s going on. Adam Murray One of the main protagonists (alongside Thatcher). Kidnapped as a child (one of 3,426), mother commits suicide afterward; he seeks to find his mother, and to fight back against the Alternates. Unbeknownst to him for much of the story, he is replaced by an Alternate. Sarah Heathcliff Founder of the Bythorne Paranormal Society (BPS). Her brother Mark is killed (or driven to suicide) by an Alternate; she pursues truth and revenge. Mark Heathcliff Sarah’s brother. Human. Gets tricked by Cesar’s Alternate, eventually driven insane / committed suicide (or killed depending on version). His death is a key early event. Evelin Miller Adam’s ex-girlfriend. She broke up with him due to personality changes that are strange/mysterious, and then gets involved in finding out what’s wrong, often assisting Sarah & others. Antagonists & Entities Name / Entity Nature / Powers / What They Do Archangel Gabriel (“False Gabriel”) The leader of the Alternates. Basically Satan in disguise. He tricks, manipulates, uses doppelgängers, and appears as a false divine figure. His goal is takeover, identity erasure of humans, psychological torture. Alternates A variety of beings that impersonate humans (or appear human-like), infiltrate via mimicry, manipulate audiovisual media, cause existential dread, induce Metaphysical Awareness Disorder (M.A.D.), push victims to suicide, etc. The Intruder / “6” Not exactly the same as an Alternate, but works with them/for Gabriel. Kidnapped thousands of children, uses media, TVs, mirrors. Has ability to reach in via media. Kidnapped Adam among others. Cesar’s Alternate (The Perpetrator) The Alternate impersonating Cesar Torres. Key antagonist in Mark Heathcliff’s arc. Drives Mark to fear, paranoia, eventually suicide. Murray Residence Alternate An Alternate that manifested through TV in Adam’s family house. It stalks Thatcher later. The Preacher A more specific Alternate (elderly nun form) who stalks young Adam before the Intruder kidnaps him, etc. ⸻ Powers / Threat Mode Some supernatural mechanics to be aware of: • M.A.D. (Metaphysical Awareness Disorder): Psychological damage/trauma caused by Alternates. Victims often driven to self-destruction. • Alternates can use media (TVs, CRTs, computers, mirrors), distort communication, mimic voices. • Kidnappings: particularly by The Intruder. Children are taken; some replaced or presumed replaced. • Identity takeover: Alternates impersonate humans. Sometimes an Alternate takes someone’s place. The victim might not even know. ⸻ Timeline (Rough / Canon + Fandom Reconstructed) This is where things get fuzzy. But here’s a scaffold, pulling together what’s in the videos and what fans have reconstructed. Year Key Events Biblical / Mythic Era The false Gabriel (Satan) impersonates archangel Gabriel; events like Eden (Adam & Eve eating forbidden fruit), the Ark, etc., all have corrupted versions. These are more symbolic & embedded in myth in the show. 1992 Big “grand year of ‘92.” Population drops in Mandela County; many of the revocations of sanity & mass hysteria begin. Adam (born 1988) is kidnapped (as part of thousands), his mother commits suicide. Mark Heathcliff’s arc begins (deaths of friends, Cesar’s Alternate trap). Late 1990s–2000s The Just-After / slow creep: Alternates become known, media warnings, establishment of systems to try to handle them. By 2007-2009, many events: Adam working with the BPS, exploring creepy tapes, manifestations. 2009 A critical point: population of Mandela County drops to barely a thousand. The USDTP (some government or private group) has “propaganda tapes” claiming threat has been controlled. But evidence suggests otherwise. Many Alternates assimilated, assimilation types discussed (“Flawed, Complete, Overdriven”). Modern Day (after 2009, into volumes of the series) Thatcher Davis is working to uncover/stop Alternates. Adam, Sarah, Evelin, etc., are investigating. Alternates still powerful. The media / broadcast distortions persist. Reality is unstable. Some protagonists die or are replaced. The fight is ongoing. ⸻ Uncertainties / Theories Since the series uses found footage / analog horror, and because some events are implied rather than shown, there are lots of “fan-fill”: • Exactly when Alternates began acting in mass: is it ancient (biblical), or did they awaken later? Sabotage of religion & ancient times are symbolic but possibly literal in the canon. • The status of Adam Murray — as the human or the Alternate — is ambiguous until certain reveals. • Order of volumes / episodes isn’t strictly chronological; some “Later Volumes” fill in backstory. • The scale of “replacement”: how many humans are replaced; how many remain unaffected. ⸻ Here’s the shape of The Mandela Catalogue without drowning in its sprawl—what world it lives in, what’s happening there, and what kind of story it’s telling. ⸻ Setting A small midwestern town—Mandela County, USA. Feels like late-’80s to early-2000s suburbia: boxy TVs, public service tapes, rotary phones, linoleum light. But the place is under siege by something that doesn’t look like war. It’s information itself—broadcasts, mirrors, voices—all gone slightly wrong. Police and government issue instructional tapes on how to survive “Alternates,” humanoid entities that perfectly imitate people but not quite. The guidance sounds procedural (“Do not engage. Do not trust your eyes.”), yet everyone giving it already sounds half-broken. By the time we enter the story, society hasn’t collapsed outright; it’s just… quietly uninhabited. Homes lit by static screens, streets empty, the occasional recording still trying to pretend order exists. ⸻ Core Scenario Something divine went wrong. In this universe, the biblical rebellion of Lucifer wasn’t just myth—it rewrote reality. A false Gabriel (“the False Angel”) usurped heaven’s message and began remaking humanity through imitation. His offspring or agents—the Alternates—are parasites of identity. They study a person, replicate them down to voice and posture, and then erase the original, leaving behind doubt: who’s real, who’s not, who’s next. The effect isn’t physical at first—it’s psychological. People who see their Alternate develop Metaphysical Awareness Disorder, a creeping horror that ends in self-harm or catatonia. Eventually, only the doubles remain. ⸻ Plot Spine There isn’t a single linear story; it’s a patchwork of police footage, VHS warnings, and found recordings. But the threads line up roughly like this:
- Genesis / Pre-Era The False Gabriel corrupts early biblical history—Eve deceived by a false angel, Cain killing Abel, the Flood as a reset attempt. These echoes prefigure the current invasion.
- Mandela County, 1990s Reports of look-alikes and disappearances spread. Mark Heathcliff, one of the first documented victims, receives a call from his friend Cesar Torres—except it’s not Cesar. That call begins the chain of deaths that mark the start of the “Analog Horror Age.” After Mark’s death, the government forms the Mandela County Police Department’s Alternate Awareness Division, issuing training videos that already feel hopeless.
- The Intruder / The Kidnappings A creature later called The Intruder abducts children—including Adam Murray—and replaces them. Adam grows up not knowing what he is. He and Sarah Heathcliff form the Bythorne Paranormal Society (BPS), investigating strange calls and old houses, unknowingly walking straight into Alternate territory.
- The Modern Tapes Detective Thatcher Davis and surviving BPS members try to piece together what’s real. Broadcasts show dwindling populations, looping emergency warnings, and false religious messages urging obedience to the wrong god. Each episode pulls another thread loose: Adam’s humanity, the origin of the Alternates, the implication that the infection has gone global.
- Present Moment The County is a ghost grid. Police frequencies chatter with no responders. Alternates record and edit human memories like home videos. The last survivors cling to rituals—cameras, prayers, pills—to keep their sense of self. The infection of identity itself has become the apocalypse. ⸻ The Heart of It The horror isn’t jump-scares—it’s the erosion of certainty. In The Mandela Catalogue, fear isn’t that monsters exist. It’s that they perfectly do, and they want your face more than your life.

You cross the county line at dusk. The sign is cracked halfway through the word Mandela, and someone’s covered the “Welcome” with gray tape. A fog bank lies low over the highway, softening the lights into halos. Your radio has been murmuring static since the gas station two towns back.
The rental house is smaller than the photos promised. A square of siding peeled off near the porch light, revealing plywood underneath. The real-estate agent left the keys in an envelope, scrawled “Stay safe, neighbor.” You tell yourself it’s just small-town humor.
Inside, the air smells faintly like wet paper. The furniture’s second-hand and polite about it—quiet, old enough to seem patient. There’s a TV built into the wall that refuses to unplug. When you turn the knob, the screen wakes for a second—snow and a voice, almost greeting you before the picture dies again.
