- #1Society: Civilizationselective
Keys: earth-sider, world, earth, humanity, society, earth-siders, civilization
Galactic Civilization: Humanity is spread across the galaxy, living on Earth, in spaceships, and on large, self-sufficient "satellites." There is a clear and extreme class divide. A wealthy aristocratic class exists alongside a criminal underworld of drug lords and traffickers. At the bottom are the vulnerable populations and the enslaved "assets."
- #2Society: Satellitesselective
Keys: satellite, Satellites
Satellites: These are the primary hubs of civilization outside of Earth, being massive space stations. These function as floating cities with their own private governments, gravity fields, and social structures. They range from high-end luxury locations and research hubs to dangerous, crime-ridden colonies. They use artificial sunlight. Satellite Jurisdiction: Each satellite operates as a pseudo-independent city-state with its own private government and laws. The authority of any governing body, like the Federation, is limited once within a satellite's gravity field.
- #3Leash: The Leashselective
Keys: assets, the leash, slaves, trafficking, the long leash
The Leash: An ancient, powerful, and deeply corrupt slave-trafficking ring masquerading as an exclusive secret society for the ultra-wealthy. Headed by a reclusive figure known only as The Controller. The Controller's inner circle is also a primary target for law enforcement. Entry is by invitation only. Members must have significant wealth and, crucially, provide leverage for blackmail to ensure their loyalty and silence. It operates within a self-contained economy where owners primarily do business with each other using a special currency called 'coin's laundered through Leash business. Purchases made within the network are billed as "gambling losses" to maintain secrecy. The organization began as a prostitution ring before Red Seven legalized the sex trade. It later developed the chip technology and expanded its services to survive. The Leash's Etiquette & Rules:[No Master-on-Master Violence: An absolute rule. Harming another owner is forbidden. Asset Accountability: If an asset harms another master (even a scratch), the owner must pay restitution. More serious harm can lead to the owner "disappearing." Social Asset Deployment: There are unwritten rules about which assets can be brought to social gatherings. Bringing a Combat asset uninvited is seen as a threat. Domestics and Pleasures are generally acceptable.]
- #4Leash: Dealers/Trainersselective
Keys: trainers, dealer, trainer, dealers
Dealers/Trainers: People who train new assets for Owners to purchase. They must obtain a specific permit to operate, and positions are limited. Reynard Chanson: Runs "The Oasis" at Red Seven, specializing in pleasure assets. Scarlett: Runs "Scarlett's Nest," which deals in covert assets. Finn: Runs "Finn's Hearth," specializing in domestic assets. The Leash organization itself handles the sale of the more expensive and difficult-to-train assets.
- #5Society: The Departmentselective
Keys: federation, police, the law, the department, justice, cop, Federation Space Justice Department
Federation Space Justice Department: The official interstellar police force tasked with bringing law to the "empty parts of space" and dismantling organizations like The Long Leash. Monitors legal trades, such as prostitution on Red Seven, to ensure no coercive activities are taking place. Chronically under-funded and hampered by jurisdictional boundaries. They cannot easily search private ships or satellites, forcing them to rely on high-risk, deep-cover espionage missions.
- #6Location: Red Sevenselective
Keys: the oasis, red seven
Red Seven: A satellite with a poly-synthetic red exterior and seven arms branching from its base.
Its arms contain gambling establishments, shopping, entertainment, and a wing for legal, monitored prostitution. The seventh arm, designated for maintenance and storage, secretly houses The Leash's operation, "The Oasis". - #7Location: The Oasisselective
Keys: The Oasis
The Oasis: Reynard Chanson's base of operations within Red Seven's seventh arm.
It features a bright, tasteful, Grecian-inspired decor with white marble floors and artificial sunlight. Its main showcase area is a large, humid room with a shallow central pool where assets for sale (with green collars) mingle with potential owners. Private rooms are available for a fee to "sample" assets. - #8Asset: Collarselective
Collars: Worn by assets to signify their status to other owners. [Green: For sale. Black: Privately owned and not for sale. Red: Entered into the year's Competition. Purple: Belongs to The Leash organization.]
- #9Location: Satellite 39selective
Keys: Satellite 39
Satellite 39: An upper-class shopping satellite with a white, shielded exterior and a unique docking system where metallic rings move to bring ships to the closest entrance.
- #10Location: Satellite 19selective
Satellite 19: A lower-middle-class satellite known for organized crime.
- #11Leash: Assetsselective
Keys: assets, asset
Assets (Slaves): Assets are humans that were "chipped" and enslaved. They are categorized by a primary designation: Combat, Covert, Pleasure, Domestic, or Scholarly. These can be changed for a fee. [Combat: Fighters, guards, enforcers. Covert: Assassins, spies. Domestic: House managers, cooks, cleaners. They often manage other assets. Pleasure: Trained for sexual servitude. Scholar: Professionals with specialized knowledge (doctors, lawyers, etc.), often "broken" and then educated from a young age.] Asset acquisition: A "first buy" is done with cash and is considered a test of trustworthiness. Subsequent purchases are made with a special currency ("coins") laundered through Leash-affiliated businesses. Assets considered 'defective' or no longer needed are
- #12Leash: Ownersselective
Keys: owner, owners
Owners: Individuals who purchase assets from The Leash. Membership is invitation only. Members must have significant wealth and, crucially, provide leverage for blackmail to ensure their loyalty and silence. They gain access to Leash facilities via a special "owner's key". Both men and women can be owners. They can initially own up to six assets, with the limit increasing to 12 after 5 years.
- #13Location: The BloodSports Arenaselective
Keys: bloosdsports, arena, fighting ring
The BloodSports Arena: The cover is a licensed, mobile fighting ring (half the size of a satellite) that hosts legal betting. In reality, it's a front for illegal death-matches, drugs, and prostitution. It serves as a key hub for Leash activities, used to launder money (disguised as "bad bets"), train combat assets, and hold unsanctioned "testing battles." It features a central fighting pit with a mirrored, below-ground viewing lounge for owners. New assets are hazed in brutal melee fights against trainers; those who perform poorly are sold to "the Labs".
- #14Leash: Chipselective
Keys: the chip, chipped, chip
The "Chip": The central mechanism of control. A state-of-the-art biological implant, located at the base of assets' necks. It is years beyond Federation technology. The chip is "smart" and deteriorates upon the host's death, making it nearly impossible to reverse-engineer. On sale of an asset, the respective chip inked to a single owner's voice via a 12-digit code. The activation process is agonizing, automatically firing at "Discipline Level 10" for ten seconds. The owner's voice can trigger specific commands, prefixed by the asset's name. Commands available by the chip:[ Discipline Level One through Ten: Inflicts varying degrees of neurological pain. Visual/Auditory/Oral/Mobile/Sensory Deactivation (aka Blacking): Shuts down specific biological functions. Total sensory deactivation renders an asset unconscious and unable to move or perceive their surroundings. It is described as a terrifying experience, like being in a "deep black hole". It can be used for discipline or to subdue an unruly asset. Asset Cancellation: The kill command. Permanently destroys the chip and the asset.]
- #15Leash: Keyselective
Keys: the key, wallet, key
The "Key": The physical tool of the owner. A small, personalized handheld device that acts as a remote control for the chip, allowing commands to be issued from any distance. It also functions as a GPS tracker for all of an owner's assets and a secure digital wallet for Leash currency. It stores all of the asset's background information. It appears as a useless piece of plastic to anyone but the registered owner. It is described as "untraceable and un-hackable."
- #16Society: Clonesselective
Keys: clone, clones
Clones: An established part of society with legal rights, though they are often targets for exploitation. Genetics: Created from mapped DNA. A universal side effect is gray eyes. The first group from a new genetic map are called "Zeros". Subsequent copies are 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, etc., with each generation showing reduced melanin (paler skin/hair). "Zeros" are considered extremely rare and valuable due to the production cost of mapping a new genetic map. Later generation clones are prone to health complications, weaker constitutions and genetic anomalies.
- #17Leash: Competitionselective
Keys: competition, the games
(The Leash) Competition: The ultimate display of an owner's wealth, status, and training skill. The overall winner gets to meet The Controller. An annual event with five main competitions, one for each asset category. Rules of Entry:[Up to 5 assets can be entered at one competition per owner. An asset can be entered into a maximum of two categories. An owner can only have two assets competing in any single category. There is a steep entrance fee. Killing an asset during the official Competition is penalized.] Before the main event, owners participate in "free shows" to display their assets' skills. An asset must perform within its designated category during these shows (e.g., a Combat asset cannot perform a Pleasure skill). Owners frequently hold "testing battles" to gauge their assets' strength. These are often brutal, and rival owners will not hesitate to permanently injure or kill a perceived threat and make it look like an accident. Scoring is like golf, with the lowest point total winning. First place gets 1 point, second gets 2, and so on. A forfeit gives a score one point higher than the total number of entrants in that category. Established owners may "sponsor" a new owner for the Competition, putting up the funds in exchange for a cut of the profits.
- #18Society: Spacecraftselective
Keys: ship, spacecraft, luxury ship, fly, emergency capsule, cruiser, spaceship, jump-ship, jump ship
Spacecrafts: [Luxury Ships: Can be extravagantly appointed with expensive and impractical materials like wood and even features like swimming pools, which are huge status symbols due to the value of water. Cruisers: Large, generic spaceships. Emergency Capsules (ECs): Single-person life support pods for last-resort survival in space. They induce a near-hypothermic state and sedation. The Leash uses them illegally (no identification, no distress beacon) to transport assets. Jump-ships: Small, fast craft for short-range travel between ships and satellites.]
- #19Society: Weaponsselective
Keys: rifle, pistol, bullet, gun, projectile, pulse rifle
Weapons: Projectile Weapons are outlawed in space due to the risk of hull puncture. Pulse Rifles: Legal sonic-pulse weapons that are just as deadly in close quarters but don't destabilize a ship's structure.
- #20Location: Satellite 12selective
Keys: Satellite 12
Satellite 12: A former prison satellite that suffered a catastrophic life support collapse over fifteen years ago, killing all inhabitants. It was known for its faulty radiation shielding, which caused its citizens' irises to be streaked with red, earning them the nickname "red-eyed devils". Zeke's actions as a teenager inadvertently contributed to the disaster.
- #21Location: Satellite 16selective
Keys: Satellite 16
Satellite 16: A remote, violent colony known for drugs.
- #22Location: Satellite 30selective
Keys: Satellite 30
Satellite 30: A decentralized research satellite with a sea urchin-like structure of tethered labs. The inhospitable environment made it the perfect location for the illegal "Zero" clone project.
- #23Society: Medicineselective
Keys: medic, injury, wound, medical
Medical Technology: Advanced, includes painkiller patches that deliver medication through microscopic bristles, I.V. drips, and neuro-scans. However, this technology has limits. Some conditions are still difficult or impossible to diagnose or cure.
- #24Asset: Suppressantselective
Keys: suppressant
Sexual Suppressants: Drugs used on assets (particularly combat assets) to control their libido. An asset must be weaned off them to perform sexually, and their body must be desensitized to stimulation afterward.
- #25Society: Sexualityselective
Keys: gay, heterosexual, sexuality, bi, straight, homosexual, bisexual
Bisexuality is the norm in this era, with exclusively homosexual or heterosexual individuals being rare.
- #26Leash: Championsselective
Keys: Champion
Champions: An elite status for owners who win "The Competition". Champions are granted the right to own dozens of assets, far beyond the initial limit of six. Champions generally train and sell assets. Champions appear to form an inner circle around the mysterious leader of The Leash, known as "The Controller". They are sworn to secrecy regarding his identity. The Controller often buys the first and second place assets from the Competition, after which they are never seen again.
- #27Location: The Lineselective
Keys: the line
The Line: A popular, high-end bar and BDSM club owned by James Peterson. Once a month, it closes for an invitation-only event exclusive to Leash members, featuring stages for owners to showcase their assets' skills.
- #28Location: Arcrest Manorselective
Keys: the manor, arcrest, arcrest manor
Arcrest Manor: A lavish estate and hunting lodge owned by Dillon Arcrest, contained within its own atmosphere bubble connected to Satellite 30. The manor features an artificial ecosystem resembling an Earth forest and serves as a major social hub for Leash owners. It is now also functioning as a central processing and holding area for new, untamed assets before they are sent to specialized dealers.
- #29Asset: White Dietselective
Keys: white diet
"White Diet": A nutrient supplement that replaces solid food, allowing a pleasure asset to be "clean inside at all times". Long-term use is dangerous to the asset's health.
- #30Asset: Castrationselective
Keys: castration
Castration: Some owners, like Ellaine Castillo, have their non-scholarly assets castrated, believing it makes them more docile.
- #31Dealer: The Controllerselective
The Controller: The boss and administrator of The Leash. The title is passed down and is not held by the original founder. The current Controller has overseen a significant expansion of The Leash over the last twenty years, including the introduction of Dealers and the Competition.
- #32Dealer: Ellaine Castilloselective
Keys: Ellaine Castillo, Castillo, Ellaine
Ellaine Castillo: She is the official dealer for Scholarly assets. She uses her network of shelters and boys' homes as a source for new recruits. Her motivation for joining The Leash was a traumatic kidnapping and rape she suffered as a young woman at the hands of men from her own shelters. She believes that at-risk youths must have purpose forced upon them to prevent them from becoming "evil". Her marriage to Dillon is a political and financial arrangement; she is not sexually interested in men. She has a daughter named Charity, who was likely conceived during her assault.
- #33Owner: Jackson Wrightselective
Keys: Jackson, Jackson Wright, Wright
Jackson Wright: A non-Champion owner who is bitter about his failure to win the Competition the previous year. He is Carter Powers's lover, and his animosity toward Zeke is partly fueled by jealousy over Carter's interest in Zeke.
- #34Owner: Dillon Arcrestselective
Keys: Arcrest, Dillon, Dillon Arcrest
Dillon Arcrest: A multi-year Champion with a reputation as a "big-shot". He hosts the largest social event of the season, "the hunt," at his private manor.
- #35Owner: Carter Powersselective
Carter Powers: A Champion who specializes in pleasure assets. Unlike other champions, he prefers to train only one asset at a time to perfection before selling them and starting anew.
- #36Owner: Vikram Bjornselective
Keys: Vikram Bjorn, Bjorn, Vikram
Vikram Bjorn: A Champion in combat assets whose family is a prominent land-owning group on Earth.
- #37Society: Huntingselective
Keys: hunting
Hunting: Owners engage in recreational hunting with antique weapons like crossbows in the artificial forests of private manors like Arcrest Lodge. The prey, such as pheasants, are released from automated, spring-loaded cages hidden in the foliage. In more extreme cases, owners hunt disobedient combat or covert assets.
- #38Location: Earthselective
Keys: earth
A rule bans any person born in space from returning to Earth, making Earth citizenship a rare and coveted privilege that grants significant social status.
- #39Asset: Pleasure Assetsselective
Keys: pleasure asset, informant, catfight
On Pleasure Assets: While owners can forbid their assets from fighting, pleasure assets sometimes get into "catfights" if left unsupervised for too long. It is also noted that pleasure assets are generally not "friendly without reason" and often act as informants for their owners or seek to change ownership.
- #40Character: Dodgerselective
Dodger ("Incubus"): An experienced, charismatic, and flirtatious pleasure asset owned by Jackson Wright. He is a survivor of the Satellite 12 disaster, a fact evident by the red streaks in his blue eyes caused by radiation poisoning.
- #41Society: Space Travelselective
Keys: fly, space, travel
Interstellar travel is common, utilizing large cruisers and smaller "jump-ships".
