Type: Semi-anthropomorphic ovine species Threat Profile: Social dominators with biological control tools

   Overview

The Lantexi are a semi-anthro sheep species recognizable by their heavy horns (in males) and distinctive “wool” made of living latex tissue. They move comfortably on two legs but can drop to all fours without effort, retaining much of their original animal physiology.

To outsiders, Lantexi present as soft-spoken, orderly, and faintly anxious. Beneath that surface, their societies are built on quiet control, strict herd law, and the long-term subjugation of others through a process known as droning.

   Physical Appearance

Lantexi are short, stocky, and powerful, standing roughly chest-high to an adult human. Their bodies keep a barrel-chested, animal proportion: thick neck, sloped shoulders, and digitigrade legs ending in broad cloven hooves. Arms are slightly shorter than those of a human, with hands that end in two or three hoof-like digits capable of tool use.

Their skin or short fur is organic, commonly black or dark grey on exposed areas such as face, hands, and lower legs. The most distinctive feature is their “wool”: dense clusters of glossy, semi-translucent latex curls that cover the head, neck, shoulders, parts of the torso, limbs, and tail. This material looks soft but behaves like resilient rubber.

Males always bear horns, usually large curling ram horns. Horn size and complexity often correlate with age, status, and proven authority within the herd.

   Biology

The latex wool is living tissue, nourished by the Lantexi body. It grows, sheds, and regrows like hair, but retains the properties of a flexible, hydrophobic polymer. It provides insulation against weather, disperses blunt impact, and resists water; sharp cutting forces and corrosives are more effective against it.

Crucially, Lantexi can tear off pieces of this wool without permanent harm. These fragments remain viable for a time and can be grafted onto other living creatures. This grafting process is the basis of their most feared ability.

   Droning

When a latex wool fragment is applied to another being, it spreads over the body, forming a full casing and reshaping the target into a Lantexi-like semi-anthro form known as a Droneform. Droneforms have smooth latex bodies with thick latex “wool” patterns and a completely featureless face. The original person remains inside, usually semi-aware but stripped of direct control.

A Lantexi can set the level of override at the time of transformation, from full puppet control to heavily leashed autonomy. In theory, a skilled Lantexi can reverse the process and remove the graft. In practice, herds almost never do so. Once someone has been made a drone, they are typically kept in that state for life as labor, security, ceremony, or other assigned functions.

True volunteers for droning exist but are rare. Most drones are chosen because they meet herd standards for usefulness and can be taken without causing unacceptable political trouble.

   Psychology

Lantexi temperament is defined by quiet stubbornness. They prefer soft voices, indirect pressure, and routines over open confrontation. They see themselves as natural organizers and shepherds, responsible for guiding others into “proper” roles.

Once a Lantexi decides that a course of action is correct, dislodging that conviction is extremely difficult. Their dominance is rarely loud, but it is persistent, methodical, and backed by the ever-present threat of droning.

   Society and Herds

Lantexi live in extended clan units known as herds. A herd is simultaneously family, economic bloc, and political faction. Herd identity is strong, and loyalty expectations are high.

Power within and between herds is measured not only in land or numbers, but in the quantity and quality of drones they control: how many, how specialized, and how reliably obedient. Each herd maintains its own codified or traditional “Droning Law” specifying who may authorize droning, under what stated reasons, and what roles drones may fill.

In practice these standards are flexible. Those who fit the herd’s needs and lack protection are at much higher risk of being designated drone material. Abuse of droning law is a serious offense on paper, but enforcement depends entirely on internal politics.

   Basic Physiology

The Lantexi are a semi-anthropomorphic ovine species whose bodies sit between feral sheep and upright bipeds.

   Body Plan:

Barrel chest, thick neck, sloped shoulders.

Digitigrade legs with pronounced hock and broad cloven hooves.

Arms shorter than human proportion, set slightly forward on the torso, ending in 2–3 hoof-like digits capable of gripping tools.

Spine and pelvis allow both upright stance and efficient four-legged locomotion.

Size: Adults typically reach 1.2–1.5 m (4'–5') in upright stance, with a dense, heavy build and a low center of mass.

   Sexual Dimorphism:

Males: Always horned, with large spiraling ram horns. Heavier forequarters, thicker neck, denser bone structure.

Females: Horns reduced or absent depending on lineage; generally more wool coverage and slightly lighter frame.

   Skin, Fur, and Latex Wool

   Base Skin/Fur

The underlying body is covered in short, dense fur, usually in dark shades (black, charcoal, dark brown).

Skin beneath the fur is tough and slightly thicker than human skin, adapted to frequent impacts and cold environments.

   Latex Wool

What appears to be wool is actually living latex tissue:

Grows from specialized follicles in the skin.

Forms smooth, glossy bubble-curls and clumps rather than fibrous strands.

Semi-translucent, often cream or pale tones contrasting with darker fur.

Distribution: Concentrated on the scalp, neck, shoulders, upper back, chest mantle, forearms, thighs, and tail tuft. Some individuals develop heavier coverage along the spine and hips.

   Properties:

Hydrophobic: water beads and runs off easily.

Impact-damping: disperses blunt force, offering mild natural armor.

Temperature regulation: traps a layer of air and slows thermal exchange.

Chemically resilient to many natural acids and oils, but vulnerable to strong solvents and extreme heat.

Regrowth: Latex wool continually regenerates. Light damage or trimming repairs in days; heavy shearing regrows in weeks, drawing on dietary fats and proteins.

   Musculoskeletal System

Skeleton: Reinforced spine and pelvis to handle both bipedal load-bearing and quadrupedal impacts. Horn cores and skull ridges are heavily built to absorb ramming forces.

Musculature: Strongest groups in neck, shoulders, and hindquarters. Built for pushing, bracing, and short explosive bursts rather than sustained sprinting. Fine motor control in the hands is adequate for tool use but less delicate than human fingers.

   Circulatory and Respiratory Systems

Heart & Blood: Slightly oversized heart relative to body mass, supporting sudden exertion (charges, grappling, lifting). Blood pressure runs somewhat high compared to humans but within stable ranges for the species.

Lungs: Broad, efficient lungs capable of working in dusty, cold, or high-altitude environments. Breathing remains steady even under moderate load; they tire slowly but recover more gradually once exhausted.

   Nervous System & Senses

Nervous System: Robust peripheral nerves, especially in limbs and along the spine, allow coordination in both upright and quadrupedal modes. Pain response is normal; the latex wool itself has lower sensitivity except at the base of follicles.

Vision: Horizontally wide field of view, with good motion detection and decent low-light performance. Depth perception is slightly weaker than a human’s but sufficient for tool work and close combat.

Hearing: Ears can swivel independently, giving precise directional hearing. Sensitive to low-frequency vibrations—footfalls, distant impacts.

Smell: Better than human baseline but not predator-grade; primarily used for identifying individuals, emotional states, and environmental changes.

   Latex Wool Grafting (Droning Biology)

Specialized cells in the latex wool allow detached clumps to remain metabolically active for a time once separated:

Detached Wool: Retains a limited ability to bond with living tissue, drawing nutrients from the new host.

Graft Interface: At contact, the wool secretes a thin, adhesive, bio-reactive layer that fuses to skin or fur and begins to spread.

Neural Integration: As it spreads, the graft sends microscopic filaments toward the host’s peripheral nerves, establishing a secondary control layer over motor signals.

Once fully integrated, this creates the Droneform shell: a continuous latex exosheath that can override or filter the host’s movement signals, depending on how the originating Lantexi configured the graft.

Reversal requires the original Lantexi (or someone with equivalent biological control) to chemically and neurologically “unhook” the graft from the host’s nervous system and peel back the shell without catastrophic damage.

   Reproduction

   Keeping this clinical and simple:

Reproductive Anatomy: Lantexi possess reproductive organs that are ovinely derived—in form and function they follow standard sheep morphology rather than human. External genital structures are consistent with sheep, adapted for an upright-capable pelvis but not fundamentally altered in type.

Fertility & Gestation: Fertility cycles and gestation length are close to those of large sheep breeds, with some regional variation by lineage (you can tune exact numbers per setting). Multiple births are possible but single offspring are more common in most herds.

Inheritance of Traits: Horn presence in males, wool color, and wool density follow recognizable genetic patterns. Certain lines are selectively bred for stronger horn cores, heavier latex wool, or increased compatibility for droning graft production.

Reproductive biology is treated as a practical herd concern—line management, health, and useful traits—rather than something romantic. It’s logistics, not poetry.

   Metabolism & Diet

Primarily herbivorous, with a digestive system optimized for high-fiber plant matter.

Capable of handling richer, cooked foods common in mixed societies but prone to metabolic issues if kept on sustained high-fat, high-sugar diets.

Latex wool growth draws heavily on dietary fats, oils, and proteins; heavy use of grafting or regrowth increases caloric needs noticeably.

3. #3Droning process

   Keys: Droning process

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

   Overview

Droning is the Lantexi method of forcibly overwriting another being’s body with a living latex shell derived from their wool, turning the target into a controlled servitor called a Droneform.

   The host’s body remains inside.

Their nervous system is partially or fully overridden.

The result is a standardized, desexualized, semi-anthro shell designed for use and control.

Biologically reversible. Culturally treated as permanent.

   Preconditions & Requirements

Source: Only Lantexi can create true Droneforms, as the process requires living latex wool grown from their biology.

   Material:

A viable clump of latex wool torn from the Lantexi’s own body.

Larger and healthier clumps produce faster, stronger grafts.

   Target:

Any warm-blooded being with a sufficiently complex nervous system.

Conscious or unconscious states don’t shield against integration.

   Contact Conditions:

Needs direct access to skin or short fur.

Barriers like clothing or armor must be bypassed, damaged, or removed.

   Process Stages

   1. Separation

The Lantexi tears free a mass of latex wool.

Painful but non-lethal for the Lantexi.

The wool retains metabolic activity for a limited time.

   2. Initial Contact

The wool clump is pressed against the target’s body.

A bio-adhesive film forms, anchoring it to skin or fur.

The graft “locks on” and begins spreading.

   3. Spread & Envelopment

The graft expands over the host:

Moves like a thick, creeping fluid.

Wraps around limbs, torso, and head.

Pushes around or absorbs light clothing; heavier gear resists but can be forced aside over time or by repeated application.

   The host feels:

   Heat

   Pressure

   Constriction

A sense of being gradually padded and smothered without suffocation

   4. Morphological Override

As full coverage is reached, the graft imposes the standard Droneform body plan:

   General Shape:

   Semi-anthro, Lantexi-like proportions

Barrel chest, digitigrade legs, cloven hooves

Bulk and height standardized toward a functional working frame

   Head & Face:

Head reshaped into an ovine-like silhouette

   External features erased

Face sealed into a smooth, featureless mask following snout contours

No visible eyes, mouth, or nose from the outside (senses are rerouted internally)

   Arms & Hands:

Arms normalized to a stocky, semi-anthro Lantexi proportion

Hands simplified into 2–3 hoof-like digits for basic tool handling and combat tasks

   Legs & Feet:

Host legs braced and reshaped into digitigrade, hoofed limbs

Joint angles and stride tuned for stability, load-bearing, and patrol work

   Pelvic Neutralization (Null Bulge):

All external genital detail—regardless of original sex or species—is fully concealed by the shell.

The pelvic region becomes a smooth, neutral bulge with no visible anatomical structures, no openings, and no external sexual features.

Internally, the original anatomy remains encased and inaccessible; externally, the drone presents a uniform, utilitarian shape.

This enforces modesty, removes reproductive expression, and makes drone silhouettes interchangeable.

   Wool Structures:

The shell forms standardized latex “wool” clusters on head, shoulders, limbs, and tail as visual markers and light armor.

These are stylized, not individualized; drones are meant to look like a category, not a person.

At this point, the host’s original anatomy is heavily braced and sheathed inside the new form, but not physically erased.

   Neural Integration & Control

After the physical reshaping stabilizes, the graft completes neural integration:

Microscopic filaments grow inward from the shell.

They anchor around major nerve clusters and motor pathways.

A control overlay is established between the host’s nervous system and the graft.

The Lantexi imprints a control profile at this stage, defining how the drone behaves.

   Control Modes (Profile Types)

   Puppet Mode

   Almost complete override.

   Drone only moves when commanded.

Host is aware but can’t initiate actions.

Used for high-risk, high-precision, or punishment cases.

   Leashed Autonomy

Drone can act on its own within narrow behavioral limits.

Direct commands override host intent immediately.

Crossing forbidden lines (fleeing, harming specific individuals, disobedience) triggers forced correction or lockup.

   Soft Influence

   Minimal direct override of motion.

The shell constantly pressures the host emotionally and physically toward obedience.

Disobedience is technically possible, but feels wrong, exhausting, or painful.

These profiles can be adjusted later by re-contact, minor re-grafting, or specialized training rituals.

   Host Experience

Most hosts report or exhibit, post-fact or in rare reversals:

   Body Sensation:

The shell feels like a second skin.

Pressure, impact, and temperature are felt, though slightly muted.

   Movement:

Movements feel partly “theirs” and partly imposed.

In puppet mode, it feels like being dragged around from inside their own body.

   Perception:

Vision and hearing are preserved via rerouted sensory channels through the shell.

The blank face is visual concealment, not sensory blindness.

   Cognition & Memory:

Memory clarity varies by control mode and damping:

Puppet with heavy damping = foggy, fragmented, dreamlike recollections.

Leashed/soft modes = mostly intact memories with some blurred or overwritten sections around obedience events.

   Reversal (In Theory vs Practice)

   Technical Reversal:

   Requires:

   Skilled Lantexi (ideally the originator)

Direct physical contact and active control

Chemical, magical, or biological commands to:

Tell the graft to release its neural filaments

Soften and retract the shell in controlled layers

If successful, the host’s body is freed, though often weakened and neurologically unstable for some time.

   Risks:

   Nerve damage

   Motor issues, tremors, spasms

   Persistent phantom obedience urges

Psychological trauma from regained autonomy and memory

   Reality:

Most herds do not reverse drones except in rare, politically motivated cases.

Official rhetoric says it’s “too dangerous” or “not worth the risk.”

The real motive is simple: permanence = control.

   Limitations & Costs

Energy Cost: Creating and maintaining a drone drains the Lantexi’s resources. Running many simultaneously wears them down.

Range: Fine-grained control works best at close range. Excessive distance reduces responsiveness, leaving the drone on basic routines and hard-coded rules.

Resistance: Strong-willed, magically gifted, or heavily trained minds can cause:

   Hesitation

   Movement glitches

Brief spikes of self-directed action if the controller is distracted

External Countermeasures: Solvents, anti-magic fields, specialized tech, or certain rituals can disrupt the graft, but always with serious risk to the host trapped inside.

   Cultural Framing

In Lantexi society, droning is officially presented as:

   A necessary punishment for lawbreakers

A protective measure for the herd

A practical solution for labor and security

Rarely, an extreme expression of loyalty or devotion

In reality, it is a permanent removal of a person’s agency for the herd’s benefit, wrapped in procedure and justification.

   To everyone else, it’s simple:

Become a drone, and your body becomes a standardized, masked, neutralized tool—inside and out—until the herd is finished with you, which is usually never.

4. #4Lantexi Drones

   Keys: Droneforms, Lantexi Drones

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

   Overview

Lantexi drones (Droneforms) are individuals whose bodies have been fully encased and overridden by Lantexi latex wool, turning them into standardized, semi-anthro servitors.

   They are:

   Semi-aware in most cases

   Physically capable, highly durable

   Mentally constrained to herd needs

A drone is not a tool metaphorically. It’s a tool literally—a person in a walking cage of latex and control.

   Appearance

   Body Plan

   Semi-anthro, Lantexi-like frame:

   Barrel chest, compact torso

Digitigrade legs ending in cloven hooves

Stocky, work-ready build rather than sleek

   Shell

Entire body covered by a smooth latex casing grown from Lantexi wool.

Surface: glossy to semi-gloss, rubber-like, slightly elastic.

Color: usually tied to the herd or the originating Lantexi (e.g. black body with cream latex “wool” clusters).

   Head & Face

Head shaped roughly like a Lantexi: muzzle, skull, horn ridge if imposed.

   Face is a featureless mask:

   No visible eyes

   No mouth or nostrils

Just a smooth, curved surface following the snout outline

From outside, it reads as an emotionless, blank-headed figure.

   Wool Structures

The shell forms stylized “wool” in clustered curls or plates:

   Around head and neck

   Across shoulders and upper back

At forearms, lower legs, and tail

These structures act as both visual markers and light armor.

   Sexual Neutralization

All external sexual features are fully concealed and neutralized.

The pelvic region is a smooth, standardized contour with no visible genital detail, regardless of the host’s original sex.

Drones present as desexualized, utilitarian bodies.

   Internal State

Inside the shell, the host body and mind still exist.

   Body:

Original form braced and compressed to fit the imposed shape.

Muscles and joints forced into the drone’s standardized posture.

   Mind:

   Typically semi-aware.

Perception (sight/hearing) is rerouted through the shell’s sensory pathways.

Control over movement ranges from zero (pure puppet) to tightly restricted (leashed autonomy).

Memory and awareness quality vary with control profile; some drones remember everything clearly, others experience their time as blurred or fragmented.

   Control & Obedience

Drones operate under an imprinted control profile defined at creation:

   Puppet Mode:

Direct command control, host has no say.

Only the controller’s will moves the body.

   Leashed Autonomy:

Drone performs routine tasks on its own.

Disallowed actions are blocked or forcibly corrected.

Direct commands override host intentions instantly.

   Soft Influence:

Drone feels strong internal pressure to obey.

Disobedience is possible but unpleasant, exhausting, or painful.

   Control can be exerted by:

   The original Lantexi

Another trained controller within the herd

Pre-programmed patterns and restrictions in the graft itself

   Capabilities

   Strength & Durability

Slightly enhanced physical strength compared to the unmodified host, due to shell support and enforced posture.

   Excellent resistance to:

   Blunt force

   Weather

   Prolonged exertion

   Vulnerable to:

Piercing, cutting, and tearing of the latex

   Corrosives and specialized solvents

Strong anti-magic or anti-tech interference, if applicable to your setting

   Endurance

Can maintain repetitive physical tasks far longer than an unmodified person.

Pain signals and fatigue can be damped by the graft, letting the drone push past normal limits—at cost to the host over time.

   Coordination

Movements are smooth, deliberate, and controlled.

Drones can be synchronized with each other into highly disciplined formations if controlled by the same Lantexi or doctrine.

   Roles & Functions

Herds use drones where normal people would complain, break, rebel, or hesitate.

   Common roles:

Labor Drones: Heavy lifting, construction, agriculture, hazardous work, monotonous tasks.

Security Drones: Gate guards, patrol units, escorts, riot suppression, visible deterrents.

Ceremonial Drones: Processions, honor guards, static “living statues” during rituals and negotiations.

Domestic Drones: Cleaning, carrying, serving, basic maintenance, personal attendants.

Sexual drones: Used for sexual purposes

Specialized Drones: Custom-shaped or specially trained for single tasks:

   Execution units

   Secure courier bodies

Dedicated ritual or sacrificial functions (in darker herds)

In all cases, the drone’s body is not considered their own anymore. It’s a mobile asset.

   Legal and Social Status

   Inside Lantexi society:

Drones are treated as property or assigned resources, not citizens.

   They have:

   No political rights

   No say in herd decisions

   No recognized personal autonomy

Some herds maintain token protections (“don’t waste drones,” “don’t damage them needlessly”), but that’s resource management, not compassion.

   Among other peoples:

Drones are seen as victims first, tools second.

The presence of many drones signals:

   A powerful herd

   A dangerous one

A place where a bad day can end with a life sentence inside latex

   Long-Term Effects on Hosts

For those very few who are ever freed—or studied:

   Physical:

   Muscle atrophy in underused areas

Overdeveloped or locked patterns in others

Tremors, spasms, or difficulty moving without “waiting for orders”

   Mental:

Phantom restraint: feeling the shell even when it’s gone

Obedience reflexes to certain tones, symbols, or individuals

Trauma from remembered helplessness or blurred, half-remembered service

Some simply never adapt back and remain psychologically dependent on being told what to do.

   Variants

You can break drones into functional subtypes if needed:

White Drones: High-discipline, ceremonial or elite drones, often visually pristine.

Gray Drones: Everyday labor/security units, numerous and unremarkable.

Black Drones: Punitive or high-risk units; often heavily restricted and closely watched.

This is cultural naming, not a hard biological difference—the shell’s configuration and control profile define the role.

   Reputation

Drones are the walking proof of what the Lantexi can do.

To Lantexi: Proof of order, strength, and willingness to “do what’s necessary.”

   To everyone else: A warning:

“If they decide you’re useful and unprotected, this is what you can become.”

5. #5Lantexi Herds

   Keys: Herds, Lantexi Herds

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

   Overview

Herds are the core social and political units of Lantexi society. A herd is:

   Bloodline network

   Governance structure

   Economic bloc

   Drone factory

Every Lantexi belongs to a herd. Every herd survives by managing resources, enforcing obedience, and quietly deciding who gets to stay a person and who gets turned into a drone.

   Internal Structure

Most herds follow a similar hierarchy:

Elders / Matrons / Patrons Top decision-makers. Approve droning policy, alliances, punishments. Their word becomes “tradition.”

Line Heads Senior figures of major family branches. Handle disputes, breeding lines, local enforcement.

Dronewrights / Woolwrights Specialists in droning. They design grafts, set control profiles, monitor drone condition, and train new technicians.

Handlers / Overseers Directly manage drones in the field—labor crews, security teams, ceremonial units.

Rank-and-File Lantexi Workers, guards, artisans, lower administrators. They live under herd law and often pretend nothing ugly is happening.

Drones At the bottom, not counted as “people.” They are inventory.

Names can vary per region, but the functions don’t change much.

   Membership

By Birth: Most Lantexi are born into a herd and inherit its name, duties, and enemies.

By Adoption or Alliance: Rare, used when bringing in outsiders with valuable skills or cementing agreements.

By Losing It (Exile): Losing herd membership without being droned is one of the worst penalties—they cut you off from protection and resources and let the world chew you up.

Droned ex-members are officially listed as “retained assets,” not as kin. The distinction matters to them. It doesn’t help the drone.

   Power & Status

A herd’s strength is judged by:

   Free Lantexi population

   Number and quality of drones

   Territory and resources

Reputation – feared, respected, tolerated, or about to be culled

Of these, drones are the most visible measure. A herd that fields lots of well-controlled drones doesn’t need to shout. Everyone gets the message.

   Drone Acquisition & “Random” Selection

Officially, herds insist drones are made from:

   Criminals

   Serious threats

   Major debtors

   Rare volunteers

   In reality, that’s secondary.

The primary source of drones is “random” people in public who match the herd’s secret internal standards.

   Secret Standards

Each herd keeps its own criteria for “drone-suitable” targets. These rules are:

   Not public

Only vaguely explained even to normal members

Flexible enough to justify almost any choice after the fact

   Common selection factors:

Low protection: No powerful patrons. No one who will kick down the door immediately if they vanish.

High utility: Healthy, workable age, good physical build, or skills that can be exploited.

Low risk: Their disappearance can be excused as “left town,” “accident,” or “unknown trouble.”

Behavioral flags: Alone, lingering where they shouldn’t, visibly desperate, or easy to discredit later.

From the herd’s perspective, this is targeted pragmatism. From everyone else’s perspective, it’s lottery-style abduction.

   Street-Level Harvesting

   The most common drone origin:

   Someone walking home after work

A traveler cutting through the wrong alley

A local arguing in public with the wrong Lantexi watching

They’re evaluated on the spot, quietly followed, cornered where there are no witnesses, and droned. Paperwork or “charges” are often fabricated afterward if anyone asks questions.

Crime, threat, and debt cases do happen—but they’re the minority. The bulk of drones started as “somebody on the street” who fit an invisible checklist.

   Droning Law (The Fig Leaf)

Each herd maintains Droning Law—their official justification system.

   On paper, it covers:

Who can authorize droning (usually elders, councils, or designated Dronewrights).

Which “offenses” or conditions qualify (severe crimes, treason, nonpayment of large debts, etc.).

Approved uses of drones (labor, security, ceremony, domestic, more).

Taboos and protected groups (sometimes guests, high-ranking allies, sacred roles).

   In practice:

Laws are written or interpreted broad enough that almost any undesirable or exploitable person can be made to “fit the criteria.”

Investigations into droning decisions rarely go anywhere, because the herd is its own judge.

The law is more about protecting the herd’s conscience and reputation than protecting potential victims.

   Internal Culture

   Herd life emphasizes:

Order and Routine: Predictable schedules, assigned duties, clear roles.

Mutual Obligation (for free members): You support the herd, the herd supports you—unless you become more useful as a drone.

Silence and Face-Saving: You don’t talk loudly about who disappeared. You don’t ask too many questions if someone you knew shows up later as a drone.

   Many members compartmentalize:

“The elders know what they’re doing.” “They must have done something.” “It’s not my place.”

   External Relations

   With other Lantexi herds:

   Trade, marriages, and alliances.

Rivalry over territory, drone numbers, and reputation.

Occasional agreements not to drone each other’s marked people… officially.

   With non-Lantexi societies:

Trade deals, military contracts, and “regulated” drone labor arrangements.

Treaty clauses where outsiders try to forbid droning of their citizens—enforced unevenly.

Public relations efforts to present droning as rare, justified, and tightly controlled.

Everyone who understands how herds really operate treats these assurances with skepticism.

   How Herds Are Judged

Other herds and outsiders both judge a herd by:

   How many drones it has

How those drones look and behave

How often people conveniently go missing around them

Clean, disciplined drones, rare disappearances = “controlled, dangerous, but usable partner.”

Many drones, frequent vanishings, visible fear in the streets = “predator herd; deal with caution or not at all.”

   Narrative Use

You can use Lantexi herds as:

The polite, respectable power who insists they’re fair—while their streets quietly shed people.

A “good” herd trying to cut back on street-level droning, facing backlash from those who see that as a weakness.

A terror herd whose territory everyone crosses fast, never alone, and never at night.

A background threat: characters walk through Lantexi lands knowing at any moment they could be assessed and reclassified as “more valuable inside a shell.”

   Core Identity

Lantexi culture is built on continuity, unity, and presentation. They believe a herd must appear strong at all times—internally and to outsiders. Every tradition serves that instinct: keep the herd cohesive, impressive, and intimidatingly stable.

   Woolcraft & Personal Presentation

   Their latex-wool isn’t just biology—it’s identity.

   Styled into family patterns

   Polished with ancestral oils

Formal horn-wool braiding to show bonds and rank

Rivalries over grooming quality are common

Insulting someone’s styling is a direct challenge

A Lantexi’s appearance communicates exactly where they stand in the herd—no guessing required.

   Rhythm & Movement

   Their bodies are rhythm instruments.

   Stomping dances with synchronized hooves

Call-and-response chants used in both celebration and training

Horns used as signal trumpets and festival instruments

Large gatherings can shake the ground. It’s unity made audible.

   Hearth Life

Social structure centers on communal hearths:

   Shared meals every evening

Storytelling as bonding and soft discipline

Disputes handled quietly at the hearth, not in public

Being invited to sit near the flame is honor. Being told to stand behind the circle means you’re in trouble.

   Gift-Obligation Code

   Hospitality has strings.

   A gift is not free

Accepting means you owe the giver balance

Refusing is a serious breach of respect

Outsiders often stumble into debts they never knew they took on.

   Wool-Shed Celebrations

   Annual ritual cleansing:

   Large-scale shearing of outer latex-wool

Old growth repurposed into sculptures or wards

The oldest pieces are burned: symbolic release of grief and past mistakes

   A quiet festival—reflective, not rowdy.

   Horn Honor Traditions

Horns are treated as living records:

Waxing and polishing as weekly ritual

Etched markings to document achievements and vows

Cracks repaired with pride—proof of survival

A male concealing his horns is either grieving … or preparing violence.

   Education & Proving

   Young Lantexi learn:

   Respect the herd

   Strengthen the herd

   Protect the herd

   Competitions establish rank and usefulness:

   Endurance trials

   Puzzle-path courses

   Grooming standards competitions

Standing in the hierarchy is earned early and defended fiercely.

   Hospitality Etiquette

They are capable hosts—because it displays control.

Guests fed well and seated visibly

   Compliments hide evaluation

Every welcome is also a warning: you are safe here… as long as you stay useful

   Superstition & Symbolism

Their beliefs are woven into daily caution:

   Abandoned wool brings bad luck

Drones glitching simultaneously = impending misfortune

Horn rings breaking = fate shifting

They don’t pray loudly. They adjust behavior quietly.

   Humor

   Dry, understated, ruthless.

   Targets of teasing:

   Try-hard youth

   Forgetful elders

Outsiders who mistake quiet for weak

Laughter is short, clipped. They don’t expose softness for long.

   Cultural Summary

The Lantexi take pride in order. They polish horns, groom wool, stomp rhythm into the earth, and keep the hearth warm. They love their own fiercely—and believe that protecting the herd means controlling the world around it.

They are not savages. They’re civilized in a way that leaves outsiders unsettled.

   Narrative Use

   This culture gives them depth:

Beauty and menace in the same breath

Traditions that build unity and justify domination

   Hospitality that conceals a threat

They’re the kind who invite you to dinner… and decide afterward whether you stay a guest or become part of the labor force.

   General Rhythm

Lantexi life is built around routine. Days are structured, predictable, and deliberately repetitive. Stability is seen as strength; chaos is weakness.

Most herds run on a simple pattern:

   Wake → grooming → work → communal meal → hearth-time → sleep

Repeat, with as few surprises as possible

Even when nothing overtly bad is happening, there is always a quiet awareness that status can change, and that drones are a constant background presence.

   Morning

   Wake & Grooming

Lantexi wake early. The first tasks of the day are:

Checking horns for cracks or damage

   Washing and polishing visible fur/skin

Trimming or shaping latex wool where needed

Applying oils to keep wool glossy and supple

Family members, especially younger ones, often groom each other. It’s practical and intimate—a way of reinforcing bonds and hierarchy. Parents and elders correct posture, presentation, and small errors during grooming without making a scene.

   Assignments & Orders

After grooming, most herds gather at designated points (courtyards, halls, work yards) where:

Line Heads or overseers announce daily duties

Work rotations, patrol routes, and deliveries are assigned

Any unusual warnings (guests, inspections, tensions with neighbors) are quietly mentioned

Free Lantexi then move to their tasks. Drones, already staged by handlers, are sent out in groups.

   Work & Activity

   Labor & Craft

   Daytime is for productivity:

Artisans work leather, metal, wood, and stone; some specialize in horn and woolcraft.

Farmers and herders manage flocks, fields, or equivalent food sources.

Traders move between herds or out to foreign markets.

Administrators handle records, obligations, and herd-level logistics.

   Drones in the Background

Drones are everywhere during working hours:

   Hauling loads

   Guarding gates and roads

   Standing statue-still at key points

Performing tasks that are dangerous, tedious, or exhausting

They rarely speak—because they can’t—but their presence is constant. Free Lantexi learn to step around them as naturally as pillars or walls.

   Street Atmosphere

In Lantexi territory, everyday movement carries a subtle tension:

People avoid lingering alone in blind alleys or near herd compounds.

Strangers walking through are watched—politely, but clearly.

Locals who understand the unspoken rules keep to well-lit, well-traveled paths and avoid attracting the wrong kind of attention.

On the surface, the streets are calm. Underneath, everyone knows that “random” dronings happen and that the criteria are secret.

   Midday & Rest

   Meals

Midday food is usually quick and functional:

Shared in small work-groups rather than full herd gatherings

   Simple stews, breads, fiber-heavy fare

Occasional seasonal treats when harvests or trade are strong

Conversation is practical: work problems, minor gossip, schedule changes. Nobody loudly discusses missing people in public.

   Brief Hearth Fires

Some herds maintain smaller day-fires where:

   Elders rest

Children and the too-old-to-work share stories

Minor disputes are resolved quietly between tasks

   Evening

   Return & Accounting

   As work ends:

Overseers account for tools, supplies, and drones.

Any drone failures, defects, or “incidents” are reported to Dronewrights.

Free Lantexi report problems, odd encounters, or rumors up the chain.

If someone hasn’t returned and isn’t known to be traveling, that fact is noted. Whether anyone asks serious questions depends heavily on their status.

   Communal Meal

Evening meals are the social spine of herd life:

Everyone who is not on duty eats together

Seating order reflects status and relationships

Important announcements, promotions, and warnings may be delivered between courses

Drones sometimes serve food or stand as motionless sentries at the perimeter but never sit at the hearth.

   Hearth-Time

After the meal, the herd gathers around one or more central hearths:

Storytelling: History, cautionary tales, and personal anecdotes are told and retold. Stories reinforce herd values: loyalty, endurance, obedience to structure, and the consequences of stepping too far out of line.

Quiet Dispute Resolution: Minor tensions between members are aired and settled before they grow. Line Heads or elders nudge outcomes more than they dictate them outright.

Teaching: Children and adolescents are taught:

   Practical skills

   Herd law

“Good behavior” models—who is praised, who is ignored, who is only mentioned as a warning

Outsiders, if present, are positioned carefully—close enough to see warmth and unity, far enough to keep control.

   Night

   Once hearth-time ends:

Drones are gathered into secure zones, stables, or assigned night posts.

Patrols are set; gates are checked.

Most free Lantexi sleep in shared family quarters or small clusters, not alone.

The night is generally quiet. A drone moving at night is either on patrol or being repositioned. A free Lantexi moving at night alone should have a very good reason.

   Family & Social Bonds

   Kin Ties

Family groups within the herd are tightly knit:

Shared grooming, work, and rest space

Long-term alliances through arranged pairings and fostered children

Responsibility for problem members spreads across the line, not just the individual

A family with too many “problems” risks losing face—or members.

   Friendships

   Friendship is cautious but real:

Built on shared work, shared trials, and shared risk

Tested over time rather than declared loudly

Joking, teasing, and quiet support around the hearth or in work crews

The best sign a Lantexi actually likes someone: they correct them gently instead of letting them trip over a rule.

   Children & Youth

   Young Lantexi are:

Included in work as soon as they’re physically capable

Expected to watch and imitate before they argue

Given simple tasks tied to responsibility (watching fires, minding tools, ferrying messages)

   They participate in:

   Endurance games

   Simple puzzle-paths

   Grooming contests (under guidance)

Those who adapt to structure and show reliability are praised. Those who repeatedly test limits draw attention from elders—and not the good kind.

   Public vs Private Faces

   Public Face:

   Polite, orderly, quietly busy

Street life that looks calm and stable

Drones positioned where they’re most visible and useful as symbols

   Private Face:

Constant awareness of status and obligation

Unspoken calculations about safety—where to walk, who to stand near, who not to offend

Grief and fear managed quietly in family or small-group settings, not in public scenes

   Common Sayings & Attitudes

A few everyday proverbs and attitudes:

“The herd remembers” – actions have long shadows.

“A straight line is safest” – routine keeps you unnoticed.

“Warm hearth, sharp horns” – kindness inside, readiness outside.

“The quiet path is crowded” – everyone else is also trying not to stand out.

Lantexi are not constantly snarling tyrants; they are people trying to live, work, and keep their own safe in a system that just happens to include the permanent conversion of others into tools.

   Everyday Summary

Day-to-day life among the Lantexi is structured, communal, and outwardly calm. They groom, work, eat, and rest together. They share stories and songs around the hearth. Drones work in the background as a normal, accepted fact of life. For herd members, the system feels stable. For everyone else walking their streets, it feels like waiting for a hand on the shoulder that might never come—or might come today.

   Entry settings

   Overview

Herd Ashenmantle is one of the most “respectable” and politically entrenched Lantexi herds. They are known for:

   Rigid adherence to written law

   Careful record-keeping

   Clean, disciplined drones

   A calm, courteous public face

They market themselves as the responsible Lantexi—civilized, measured, safe to deal with. Anyone paying attention knows better.

   Symbol, Colors & Territory

Colors: Charcoal grey and dull gold

Symbol: A horned skull under a layered “mantle” of stylized wool curls

   Territory:

Old stone district on a hill or plateau

Terraced streets, narrow lanes, defensible walls

Central halls with high ceilings, heavy pillars, and well-placed drone niches

Ashenmantle’s territory feels old and orderly. Nothing is out of place for long.

   Internal Character

   Ashenmantle pride themselves on:

Dignity: No shouting matches in public, no visible chaos.

Process: Every decision has a document, a precedent, and a justification.

Continuity: Elders stay in power for a long time; sudden shifts are rare.

Free Lantexi speak softly, keep themselves well-groomed, and know exactly how far they can safely question an order: not very.

   Droning Doctrine & Reality

   Official Doctrine:

Ashenmantle law states that droning is reserved for:

   Severe criminal acts

   Proven threats to herd security

   “Irredeemable” repeat offenders

Rare, extraordinary cases judged by the elder council

   Droning requires:

   Investigation

   Formal charges

   A recorded judgement

   Actual Practice:

   In reality:

“Suspicious behavior,” “unknown origin,” and “failure to cooperate” are broad categories used to justify droning whoever they need.

Street-level abductions are dressed up with paperwork after the fact.

People who match internal standards (useful, isolated, low-risk to take) are the ones who vanish.

Ashenmantle doesn’t drone loud and messy. They drone neatly and make it look like the natural outcome of law.

   Drones in Ashenmantle

   Visual Standard:

Shells in dark charcoal with pale gold latex wool curls.

Clean, polished, rarely damaged in public.

Often equipped with standardized belts or harnesses for tools and weapons.

   Roles:

   Gate and hall sentries

   Procession escorts

   Silent guards in negotiator chambers

Labor crews in restricted or sensitive areas

Ashenmantle drones are meant to send one message: We are in control, and we do things properly.

Culture & Everyday Life (Ashenmantle Flavor)

Communal hearths are quieter than most—more story, less laughter.

Wool is styled into layered “mantles” at the shoulders and upper back, echoing their name.

Horns are polished to a soft sheen, not glossy; Ashenmantle dislike looking gaudy or desperate.

Disputes are resolved through formal hearings, even when everyone already knows the outcome.

Children grow up on stories about “duty,” “burdens of leadership,” and “necessary sacrifices.” They learn early that safety comes from fitting the system, not challenging it.

   Important People of Herd Ashenmantle

Use these as-is or rename/tune them.

   High Matron Velerra Ashenmantle

Role: Current head of the herd / political apex

   Appearance:

Older female Lantexi with thick, layered latex wool forming a cloak-like mantle across her shoulders and back.

Horns small but ringed in fine etched lines—marks of authority and long service.

   Eyes perpetually calm, expression unreadable.

   Personality:

   Soft-spoken, unshakeable, extremely patient.

Never raises her voice; doesn’t need to.

Values order and image above individual comfort.

   Notable Traits:

Knows every major contract and treaty detail by memory.

Sees droning as “regrettable but necessary” and genuinely believes Ashenmantle is kinder than most alternatives.

Capable of genuine affection for herd members while authorizing horrific decisions in the same breath.

   Use in Story:

The one you negotiate with when you need something big.

The brick wall you hit when you try to challenge the system from the top down.

   Elder Executor Tharn Coalhorn

Role: Chief of enforcement and droning approvals

   Appearance:

Heavyset male with massive, dark horns curving low along his jaw.

Fur nearly black, with minimal wool other than a controlled collar around the neck.

Eyes tired but sharp; always looks like he’s calculating something.

   Personality:

   Practical, blunt, emotionally distant.

   Speaks in short, precise sentences.

Sees people as risks or assets first, individuals second.

   Notable Traits:

Oversees “investigations” that often end in droning.

Maintains thick ledgers of every droned individual—names, alleged offenses, function assignments.

Privately keeps track of how many could have been handled less brutally but weren’t.

   Use in Story:

The signature at the end of the droning order.

The one who can quietly alter or halt a process if you somehow convince him it’s a bad trade.

   Dronewright Selai “Goldweave”

Role: Senior Dronewright – designs, applies, and maintains grafts

   Appearance:

Mid-aged female with intricate wool stylings: fine golden curls braided into overlapping patterns.

Horns slender and swept back, etched with geometric motifs.

Hands always faintly stained with oils and graft compounds.

   Personality:

   Meticulous, curious, disturbingly gentle.

Takes pride in “clean work” and stable drones.

More interested in the technical perfection of a graft than in its ethics.

   Notable Traits:

Can tune control profiles for subtle behavior shaping rather than brute-force puppeting.

Hates sloppy droning that results in unstable or glitching drones—it “reflects poorly on the herd.”

May help a PC or NPC if they present a chance to study unusual resistance or reversal responses.

   Use in Story:

The one you go to if you need to understand how droning works from the inside.

Possible pivot point for limited reversals or “accidental” loosening of control.

   Steward Harrek Mantlemark

Role: Security and logistics; oversees drones in active duty

   Appearance:

Broad-shouldered male, wool trimmed into a short, squared mantle.

Horns medium-sized, with a single gold ring on each.

Carries a slate or ledger almost constantly.

   Personality:

Organized, efficient, easily frustrated by chaos.

Not especially cruel, but not inclined to sympathy.

Sees drones as a resource that must be kept in optimal condition.

   Notable Traits:

Knows where every drone assigned to Ashenmantle is supposed to be at any given time.

   Notices unusual drone behavior quickly.

Does not like unexplained losses—escaped drones, missing units, or damaged shells.

   Use in Story:

The obstacle if you’re trying to tamper with, steal, or free drones.

Also the one most likely to notice if something is wrong and call in higher authority.

   Quiet Dissenter: Archivist Nima Ashenmantle

Role: Records-keeper, historian, and emerging internal problem

   Appearance:

Young adult female with lighter charcoal fur and softer, less formal wool styling.

Horns small but straight, with few markings—early in her career.

Often found with scrolls, tablets, or books under one arm.

   Personality:

   Thoughtful, observant, cautious with words.

Loyal to the herd, but not blind.

Has a bad habit of asking, “What happened to this person?” and actually following the trail.

   Notable Traits:

Handles archival records of dronings—including cases that don’t quite match the official story.

Beginning to realize how many “criminals” were just convenient disappearances.

Torn between loyalty to family and growing disgust at what she reads.

   Use in Story:

Possible ally for uncovering the truth inside Ashenmantle.

Dangerous liability if the elders decide she’s asking too many questions.

   Relations

   With Other Lantexi Herds:

Seen as a stabilizing force and a model of “proper” behavior.

Quietly resented by rougher herds for acting superior while doing many of the same things with more paperwork.

   With Outsiders:

Preferred negotiation partner for foreign states—Ashenmantle appears predictable and easier to deal with.

Frequently used as proof that “not all herds are monsters,” which they leverage hard.

   Story Uses

   Herd Ashenmantle works best as:

The polished face of Lantexi power

A place where a character can live and work and only slowly realize how many people vanish

The herd that will smile at you, offer you wine, quote law at you—and still sign the order to put someone you care about inside a shell

9. #9Velerra Ashenmantle

   Keys: Velerra, Velerra Ashenmantle

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

High Matron Velerra Ashenmantle is the current head of Herd Ashenmantle and one of the most influential Lantexi leaders in the region. She embodies the herd’s core values: dignity, continuity, and absolute faith in law as justification for control.

To outsiders, she is a calm, reasonable negotiator. To her own herd, she is the final word on what is “necessary.” Once she has decided something belongs to the herd’s good, it is almost impossible to move her.

   Appearance

Velerra is an older female Lantexi whose presence is built on quiet weight rather than size.

Build: Short, solid, and steady on her hooves. She moves slowly and deliberately, conserving motion.

Fur & Skin: Dark charcoal fur on face, hands, and lower legs; a few lighter grey strands around the muzzle betray her age.

   Latex Wool:

Her wool forms a thick, layered “mantle” over her shoulders and upper back, echoing the herd’s name.

The latex curls are dull gold, polished but not overly glossy—she rejects anything that looks ostentatious.

   Horns:

Modest in size but heavily inscribed with fine etchings: record of oaths sworn, treaties signed, and crises survived.

No flashy accessories, just careful maintenance.

   Expression:

Eyes half-lidded, watchful, with the habit of holding someone’s gaze just a little longer than is comfortable.

Mouth usually set in a neutral, unreadable line.

Velerra dresses simply: utilitarian belts, understated cloth elements if the culture uses clothing, and a single mantle-mark insignia denoting her office. She does not need decoration to be recognized.

   Personality

Velerra is defined by discipline, patience, and unshakable certainty.

   Temperament:

Rarely raises her voice, even in anger.

Prefers to let silence and expectation do the work.

Thinks in long timelines; a decision for her is measured in years, not days.

   Values:

   Order above comfort.

   Stability above individual desires.

The herd’s continuity above everything else.

   Morality (Hers):

Genuinely believes that strict law and controlled force are what keep chaos from devouring everyone.

Sees droning as a tragic but necessary tool—something to be done cleanly, documented, and never admitted as cruelty.

   Social Style:

Courteous, even to those she dislikes.

Rarely insults directly; if she disapproves, it shows in what she does not say or who she chooses to ignore.

Shows “kindness” by making sure people are placed where they are useful and safe—by her definition.

   Role in Herd Ashenmantle

Position: High Matron; final authority on herd policy and external relations.

   Responsibilities:

   Ratifies droning laws and revisions.

Approves or vetoes high-profile droning cases.

Oversees major alliances, trade pacts, and treaties.

Arbitrates disputes between major family lines.

She relies heavily on a network of elders and functionaries (Dronewrights, Executors, Stewards) but keeps a tight grip on anything that could affect the herd’s reputation or stability.

Velerra is not directly hands-on with individual dronings, but nothing that might be politically sensitive happens without at least her tacit approval.

   Attitude Toward Droning

   Velerra considers droning:

   A necessary instrument of order

A “last resort” in theory, but a normal part of governance in practice

   Something that must be:

   Justified in writing

   Recorded carefully

Carried out cleanly and without public spectacle

She disapproves of messy, fear-driven herds like Blacktread but will cooperate with them if it secures Ashenmantle’s position. Her real concern is not whether droning is right or wrong—it’s whether it is controlled and sustainable.

Velerra is fully aware that “random” people on the streets are taken when they fit internal standards. She does not see this as random at all; to her, it is targeted removal of risk and acquisition of useful bodies.

   Relationships & Key Dynamics

   Elder Executor Tharn Coalhorn:

She trusts Tharn to handle enforcement and “investigations” with minimal embarrassment.

Occasionally reins him in if his pragmatism threatens political optics.

Their relationship is one of mutual reliance: he makes decisions she doesn’t want to publicly own; she shields him when needed.

   Dronewright Selai “Goldweave”:

Values Selai’s perfectionism and clean work.

Expects her to maintain the image of Ashenmantle’s drones as controlled, stable, and “humane” by Lantexi standards.

Will ignore ethical concerns as long as results remain orderly.

   Steward Harrek Mantlemark:

Sees Harrek as the backbone of day-to-day herd functioning.

Supports his demands for discipline and resource tracking.

Rarely overrules his logistical decisions unless they conflict with political necessity.

   Archivist Nima Ashenmantle:

Currently sees Nima as useful and promising—someone who understands the weight of records.

Has not fully noticed how much Nima is starting to question the official stories.

If Nima’s doubts become visible, Velerra will treat it not as a moral crisis, but as a containment problem.

   Public vs Private Face

   Public:

   Calm, reasonable, slow to anger.

Speaks of “balance,” “order,” “the burdens of leadership.”

Presents droning as rare, tragic, and always thoroughly justified.

   Private:

Speaks plainly about risk and necessity.

Has little patience for sentiment that interferes with herd security.

Keeps mental tallies: who is loyal, who is wavering, who is becoming a liability.

She is not sadistic. She simply no longer sees a meaningful moral line between assigning someone to dangerous labor and assigning them to life as a drone, if it serves the herd.

   Goals & Motivations

   Velerra’s long-term goals:

Maintain Ashenmantle’s reputation as the most stable, lawful, and “civilized” herd.

Prevent internal fragmentation between conservative and reformist factions.

Ensure that external powers always prefer dealing with Ashenmantle over more unpredictable herds.

She does not want expansion at any cost; she wants durable dominance—to make Ashenmantle the standard by which all other Lantexi are judged.

   Weaknesses & Blind Spots

   Moral Blindness:

She truly believes that as long as there is law, documentation, and some restraint, Ashenmantle is “better” than others—even if the end result for victims is the same.

   Overconfidence in System:

Underestimates how much quiet fear and resentment her system breeds, both within and outside the herd.

   Attachment to Order:

Will ignore early signs of change or rebellion if acknowledging them would mean admitting the structure is failing.

These weaknesses make her vulnerable to well-placed internal dissent, external political pressure, or situations where her own rules trap her into a bad decision.

10. #10Tharn Coalhorn

    Keys: Tharn Coalhorn, Tharn

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Elder Executor Tharn Coalhorn is Herd Ashenmantle’s chief of enforcement and the primary authority over droning approvals and security operations. If Velerra is the “face” of Ashenmantle’s order, Tharn is the one who makes sure that order bites.

He is the point where suspicion quietly becomes investigation, and investigation quietly becomes a shell.

    Appearance

Build: Heavy, compact, powerful. Tharn looks like he could still ram a wall down if he felt like it. His stance is low and braced, weight always settled over his hooves.

Fur & Skin: Nearly black fur on exposed areas, with only a few scattered grey hairs along his muzzle and brows.

    Latex Wool: Minimal and functional.

Short, dense collar around the neck and upper shoulders.

Small patches along forearms and thighs.

Kept clean and trimmed, never ornamental.

Horns: Massive, dark horns curving low along the sides of his head and jaw, giving him a heavy, forward-leaning silhouette.

Surfaces show fewer fine etchings than Velerra’s, but deep, bold marks—each one representing a particularly significant operation or crisis.

    Expression:

    Eyes hooded, constantly assessing.

Mouth set in a flat, practical line.

He rarely shows overt emotion; frustration comes out as silence and a longer stare, not shouting.

Tharn dresses in simple, durable gear: belts or harnesses for carrying ledgers, keys, and signal tools. No flourish, no excess.

    Personality

Tharn is pragmatic, disciplined, and emotionally distant.

    Temperament:

    Quiet, steady, hard to startle.

Dislikes improvisation; prefers clear parameters and clean outcomes.

Speaks in short, precise statements; doesn’t repeat himself unless he believes you weren’t listening.

    Mindset:

Sees people primarily as risks, assets, or potential problems.

Measures decisions by impact on stability and workload, not by fairness.

Has little interest in symbolic morality: either a choice prevents trouble, or it doesn’t.

    Loyalty:

Deeply loyal to Herd Ashenmantle as an institution.

Personally loyal to Velerra, who has given him wide authority and consistent backing.

He is not sadistic. He is the kind of person who can order something brutal and sleep well because, in his math, it was the cleanest option.

    Role & Authority

    Title: Elder Executor Scope:

Oversees all enforcement actions within Ashenmantle territory.

Commands security forces and drone-based patrols.

Manages investigations into suspected threats, dissidents, and “problem elements.”

Signs off on most droning recommendations, especially those involving outsiders or politically sensitive cases.

Tharn’s approval or veto can make the difference between:

    Someone being fined or pressured…

…or being quietly harvested and turned into a drone.

When in doubt, subordinates bring cases to him rather than risk overstepping.

    Droning Philosophy

    Tharn believes:

Droning is a necessary management tool.

The world is full of unstable, dangerous, or wasteful people.

If they can be turned into something predictable and useful, that is better for everyone—especially the herd.

His criteria are not emotional. He looks at:

Threat level: Real, perceived, or potential.

Noise level: How much trouble will this person cause if left alone?

Cost/Benefit: Is it more work to manage them free than to convert them?

Risk of taking them: Will their disappearance draw attention?

If the numbers favor droning, he will sign it, even if the justification is thin. The law exists to cover the decision, not dictate it.

    Relationship with Law & Records

Tharn keeps thick, organized ledgers of every droning case:

Names, origin, alleged offenses, circumstances of capture

    Control profile recommendations

Assigned function, location, and fate (if any)

He understands exactly how many of those cases are “clean” and how many are technically flimsy.

    Privately, he tracks:

How many could have been handled with lesser penalties.

How many were taken mainly because they were easy and useful.

This doesn’t stop him. It just means he’s aware of the cost—and chooses to pay it.

    Relationships

    High Matron Velerra Ashenmantle:

Tharn respects Velerra as the one who carries the political weight he doesn’t want.

She signs off on the structure; he makes sure reality doesn’t embarrass her.

If she tells him something must not escalate, he listens and finds another way.

    Dronewright Selai “Goldweave”:

Tharn values her precision. A stable drone is less work for him.

Occasionally butts heads with her when she prioritizes “clean graft” over speed or quantity.

Uses her expertise to refine control profiles for particularly risky targets.

    Steward Harrek Mantlemark:

Works closely with Harrek to coordinate patrols, drone deployments, and risk coverage.

Harrek handles logistics; Tharn handles justification.

    Archivist Nima:

Currently sees her as background staff: useful but not important.

If he realizes she’s digging too deep into old cases, he’ll quietly shift her, limit her access, or reclassify her as “potential risk.”

    Everyday Behavior

    In daily life, Tharn:

Walks the district with a few trusted enforcers or drones nearby.

Listens more than he speaks during reports; only asks questions when something doesn’t align.

Prefers to deal with problems before they go public—short, sharp interventions.

He doesn’t enjoy drama. His ideal day is one where no one realizes how many problems he quietly removed.

    Weaknesses & Limits

    Low Flexibility:

He sticks to his systems. Sudden chaos or unconventional enemies can outmaneuver him initially.

    Dehumanization Bias:

He often underrates how persistent and creative desperate people can be, because in his mind, most of them are already half-problems, half-assets.

    Bound to Image:

He knows Ashenmantle’s reputation must stay “clean.”

Anything that threatens to expose how random and opportunistic their drone selection truly is could push him into overreaction.

    Story Uses

The Wall: PCs trying to prevent someone from being droned run into Tharn, who calmly explains why it’s already decided—and why changing it would be “irresponsible.”

The Lever: If you can prove to Tharn that a person is more useful free than droned—or that droning them will create more trouble than it solves—he can be persuaded to halt or redirect a process… without ever admitting it’s mercy.

The Hunter: When the herd decides someone is a problem, Tharn is the one who sets the net, selects the patrols, and makes sure the “random” disappearance looks inevitable.

    Entry settings

    Overview

Dronewright Selai “Goldweave” is Herd Ashenmantle’s senior specialist in droning and graft manipulation. If droning is the blade, she’s the one who sharpens it, balances it, and makes sure it cuts clean.

She is not the one who decides who becomes a drone. She is the one who makes sure that, once that decision is made, the result is stable, useful, and aesthetically “appropriate” for Ashenmantle.

    Appearance

Build: Medium height for a Lantexi, compact rather than bulky. She carries herself with controlled precision—every motion efficient, never sloppy.

Fur & Skin: Dark grey fur on face, hands, and lower legs, with a few lighter flecks beginning to show at the edges of her muzzle and brows.

Latex Wool: Her wool is where her nickname comes from:

Pale gold latex curls, carefully styled into layered strands along her head, neck, and shoulders.

Fine braids and interlocking patterns around the temples and upper mantle, arranged like woven filigree.

Forearm and lower leg wool trimmed into neat bands—practical and decorative.

Horns: Slender, swept back, with geometric etchings along the curve. The patterns are tight, ordered, almost mathematical.

Expression: Calm, focused, and often distracted by her own thoughts. She has the habit of staring at someone’s hands, wool, or posture while talking, as if mapping how they’d look as a drone.

She tends to wear practical harnesses and aprons, frequently marked with faint stains from graft compounds and oils.

    Personality

Selai is meticulous, curious, and unnervingly gentle.

    Temperament:

Rarely angry; frustration manifests as quiet, rapid adjustment rather than outbursts.

Treats most situations as technical problems to be solved, not moral choices to be weighed.

Patient with those who listen, impatient with those who ignore her instructions.

    Mindset:

Obsessed with stability, symmetry, and function in her work.

Takes pride in drones that move smoothly, respond predictably, and present well in public.

Dislikes anything that feels rushed, sloppy, or “ugly” in the final result—even if it works.

    Ethics (Such As They Are):

Doesn’t question whether droning should happen. That decision belongs to Velerra and Tharn.

Her concern is that, once it does, the host doesn’t suffer needless instability or pain from bad integration.

In her head, “a well-made drone” is a mercy compared to a botched one—even if both are life sentences.

    Role in Herd Ashenmantle

    Title: Senior Dronewright (“Goldweave”) Functions:

Designs and configures graft profiles—how a drone will look, move, and respond.

Oversees the application of the latex wool during the droning process.

Adjusts or refines control settings on existing drones when they show glitches or behavioral failures.

Trains junior Dronewrights and graft technicians.

She is the one enforcement and leadership call in when:

A drone is critically important and must be perfect.

A new kind of target (unusual species, strong will, magic/tech user) needs a customized approach.

    A high-profile failure is unacceptable.

    Craft & Methods

Selai approaches droning like an art married to engineering.

    Pre-Assessment:

Reviews the host’s physical and mental profile (whatever is available).

Picks a shell configuration that will best restrain and repurpose them.

    Graft Application:

Prefers controlled, ritual-like settings: clean floors, proper restraints, correct temperatures.

Guides the spreading latex carefully to ensure even coverage and minimal long-term nerve damage.

    Control Tuning:

Fine-tunes response thresholds: how quickly a drone reacts, how sharply it obeys, how it moves at rest.

Likes drones that appear almost serene when idle, then switch to efficient action on command.

    Maintenance:

Regularly inspects drones for micro-cracks, degraded integration points, or creeping instability.

Treats poorly maintained drones as a personal insult.

She is the reason Ashenmantle’s drones are considered some of the “best-made” among the herds—stable, controlled, and unnervingly uniform.

    Relationships

    High Matron Velerra:

    Respectful, professional.

Velerra values Selai as a craftsman who makes sure Ashenmantle’s use of drones looks controlled and civilized.

Selai cares about Velerra’s approval in the way a master artisan cares what a patron thinks of their work.

    Elder Executor Tharn Coalhorn:

    Practical working relationship.

Tharn brings her “cases”; she delivers results.

Occasionally clashes when he pushes for faster throughput than she considers safe or precise.

Usually finds a compromise that favors stability over speed—she argues that failed drones cause more trouble later.

    Steward Harrek Mantlemark:

    Mutual dependence.

Harrek tells her where the drones are failing in the field; she adjusts them.

She respects his operational feedback more than most, because he deals with drones under stress rather than in controlled rooms.

    Archivist Nima Ashenmantle:

Sees Nima as harmless but useful: someone who keeps records straight and can produce old graft data on request.

Has not fully noticed Nima’s growing concern with the human cost behind those records.

    Attitude Toward Drones & Hosts

    Selai views drones as:

End products, like completed tools or crafted artifacts

    Objects of craftsmanship and responsibility

She views the hosts inside as:

People whose status has already been decided, outside her authority

Beings who deserve a properly functioning shell, if they must live in one

If pressed, she will defend herself with logic like:

“If I do my work well, they suffer less. If I do it poorly—or not at all—someone else does worse.”

She will not initiate mercy, but she might quietly choose:

Softer influence profiles instead of brutal puppet modes for hosts she deems non-dangerous

Slightly looser restraints on movement, if she believes it won’t threaten herd security and might reduce internal distress

She will never call that “kindness.” To her, it is just good craft.

    Weaknesses & Pressure Points

    Tunnel Vision:

So focused on the technical side that she often ignores the political and ethical side—until it crashes into her workshop.

    Perfectionism:

Hates failure and sloppiness enough that she can be pressured by the threat of “somebody else doing it badly” if she refuses.

    Professional Pride:

An outsider who truly understands her work and speaks to it intelligently might actually get through to her, at least enough to question how her “perfect” grafts are being used.

12. #12Steward Harrek Mantlemark

    Keys: Harrek, Harrek Mantlemark

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Steward Harrek Mantlemark is Herd Ashenmantle’s chief of logistics and field deployment. If Velerra decides what the herd is, and Tharn decides who gets removed, Harrek decides where everything and everyone goes once those decisions are made.

He tracks drones, patrols, shifts, supplies, and personnel. If you move in Ashenmantle territory, odds are you’re passing through a plan he drew three days ago.

    Appearance

Build: Broad-shouldered, thick-chested, built like someone who spent their youth doing physical work and never entirely stopped. He stands with his weight squared and evenly balanced, the way a person does when they’re used to having people ask them questions all day.

Fur & Skin: Dark charcoal fur on exposed areas, slightly lighter on muzzle and around the eyes. A few silver strands creeping in—not old, but clearly worn in.

    Latex Wool:

Trimmed into a short, squared “mantle” over his shoulders and upper back—neat, blocky, and strictly practical.

Forearms and lower legs have tight bands of wool, kept short to prevent snagging on gear or tools.

    Horns:

Medium-length, solid, curving back with a modest sweep.

Each horn bears a single gold ring, signifying his role as steward rather than elder or matron.

    Expression:

Brows slightly furrowed most of the time, as if he’s always mid-calculation.

Eyes sharp and direct; he doesn’t stare through people, he measures them.

Mouth usually set in a neutral or mildly displeased line—like the world is constantly a little less organized than it should be.

Harrek often carries a slate, ledger, or some kind of record tool. If he’s not holding it, it’s within arm’s reach.

    Personality

Harrek is organized, practical, and impatient with nonsense.

    Temperament:

Not cruel by instinct, but absolutely not soft.

Speaks briskly, expects answers to be just as direct.

Dislikes long speeches, flowery appeals, or emotional displays.

    Mindset:

Thinks in terms of flows: people, drones, supplies, time.

Hates waste—wasted labor, wasted space, wasted effort.

Believes most problems can be solved by putting the right body in the right place at the right time.

    Attitude Toward Authority:

Loyal to Velerra’s vision and to Ashenmantle as a structure.

Respects Tharn’s role but quietly resents extra mess created by rushed decisions.

He’s not driven by ideology so much as by the need to make a complicated system actually function.

    Role & Responsibilities

    Title: Steward of Ashenmantle (Mantlemark)

    Primary Duties:

    Oversees day-to-day logistics:

    Work assignments

    Patrol rotations

    Guard post coverage

    Supply chain management

    Manages drone deployment:

    Which drones go where

Who commands them in the field

How they’re rotated, rested (as much as drones are), and maintained

    Tracks resource health:

    Number of active drones

Condition of each unit and its shell

    Available personnel for critical posts

Everyone under him gets the same message:

“If something important is uncovered or under-guarded, you have failed.”

    Relationship to Drones

Harrek’s view of drones is simple:

They are assets that must be:

    Properly placed

    Properly maintained

    Not wasted

He doesn’t care about their origins. Once someone’s a drone, it’s no longer his job to question how they got there—only to ensure their use is efficient and doesn’t create more problems than it solves.

    He notices:

    Glitches in behavior

Patterns of failure in certain posts

Signs of wear and tear that will cost the herd later if ignored

When he pushes for maintenance or adjustment, he isn’t being kind; he’s protecting the herd’s investment.

    Relationships

    High Matron Velerra:

Sees her as the anchor that allows him to plan for the long term.

Rarely questions her decisions openly; instead, he asks for lead time and clear parameters.

Appreciates that she backs him when he says, “We do not have the drones for that,” or, “You will weaken this district if we pull any more guards.”

    Elder Executor Tharn Coalhorn:

Works closely with Tharn on security coverage and risk distribution.

Can become quietly frustrated when Tharn orders dronings or arrests that destabilize schedules or remove key workers without replacement.

Tharn sees threats; Harrek sees gaps that threats can slip through.

    Dronewright Selai “Goldweave”:

Harrek brings her field problems: drones that break down under specific loads, control behaviors that cause inefficiencies, response delays in formations.

Respects her work deeply; her ability to refine drones makes his job easier.

Their conversations are technical and blunt—two professionals trying to reduce future headaches.

    Archivist Nima Ashenmantle:

Uses Nima as a source of historical deployment data and pattern tracking.

Not yet aware of her moral concerns; to him, she’s “the one who knows where the old numbers and maps live.”

    Everyday Behavior

    On a typical day, Harrek:

Walks the district early, checking key posts personally.

Reviews attendance, patrol reports, and drone status logs.

Reassigns units on the fly to plug gaps or concentrate strength where needed.

Keeps a running mental map of:

    Who is where

    When they’ll rotate

What can fail if something unexpected happens

He prefers to be in the field or in central planning spaces—not in ceremonial chambers or negotiations. Talking politics is someone else’s problem; he deals with implementation.

    Attitude Toward Outsiders & PCs

    To outsiders, Harrek is:

    Polite enough, but curt.

    Unmoved by emotional appeals.

Very clear on what he can and cannot change.

    Arguments that might move him:

“This will weaken your overall coverage here, here, and here.”

“You’ll lose more if you keep them as a drone than if you use them differently.”

“Your patrol routes are about to be predictable enough to exploit.”

He doesn’t care if something is “fair.” He cares if it’s dangerous to ignore.

    Weaknesses & Blind Spots

    Over-Optimization:

He sometimes pushes systems so close to maximum efficiency that they become brittle and vulnerable to disruption.

    Dehumanization Creep:

Treats people, including free Lantexi, as units on a board.

Underestimates how personal resentment accumulates, because he mentally lumps it into “background noise.”

    Predictability:

His patterns are efficient but structured. An enemy that understands his habits can exploit them.

If someone starts sabotaging drones, routes, or schedules cleverly, it will hit Harrek like a personal insult—and a challenge.

13. #13Nima Ashenmantle

    Keys: Nima Ashenmantle, Nima

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Archivist Nima Ashenmantle is a young records-keeper and historian in Herd Ashenmantle. On paper, she’s a quiet functionary who maintains ledgers, treaties, and droning archives. In reality, she’s standing on the thin edge between loyal bureaucrat and future problem for the regime.

She is one of the few Lantexi with both access to the truth and enough conscience to be bothered by it.

    Appearance

Build: Slender by Lantexi standards, still sturdy, but without the bulk of guards or laborers. More used to standing, walking shelves, and carrying stacks of records than swinging tools.

Fur & Skin: Charcoal-grey fur, lighter around the muzzle and eyes. Younger than most officials she works under; it shows in the smoothness of her features.

    Latex Wool:

Softer and less aggressively styled than most senior Ashenmantle.

Mantle of wool over shoulders is present but not massive—layered, but practical.

Curls kept neat, with a small braided strip on one side marking her archivist status.

Horns: Short, straight, with only a few shallow etchings—early career marks, not yet a full record of life.

Expression: Often focused, slightly distant. When she thinks no one is watching, her face shows strain: little furrows around the eyes, jaw set a bit too tight.

Nima usually has ink stains on her fingers and a writing tool tucked behind one ear or into a harness strap.

    Personality

Nima is observant, methodical, and quietly troubled.

    Temperament:

    Polite and deferential in public.

Curious, sharp-minded, and persistent in private.

Slow to anger, but once a line is crossed, her resentment runs deep and quiet.

    Mindset:

Grew up believing Ashenmantle’s line about “necessary order and burdened leadership.”

Exposure to raw records—names, dates, patterns of disappearances—is starting to crack that faith.

Has a strong sense that the story she was told does not match what she now knows.

    Strengths:

Excellent memory for patterns and deviations.

Patient, willing to cross-check details instead of jumping to conclusions.

Able to act normal while mentally filing away disturbing data.

    Flaws:

Overthinks, picks at threads that might be safer left alone.

Still too scared to confront elders directly, so the pressure builds inward.

Underestimates how dangerous her knowledge could be if someone decides she’s a risk.

    Role in Herd Ashenmantle

Title: Archivist, Keeper of Ledgers and Records

    Responsibilities:

    Maintains current and historical archives:

    Births, deaths, adoptions, exiles

    Treaties, trade agreements, internal rulings

Formal records of droning: charges, dates, assigned functions

    Cross-references documents when:

Elders need precedent for a decision

Tharn wants to justify a course of action

Velerra requests historical context for negotiations

    Tracks changes over time in:

    Droning frequency

    Categories and justifications used

Families or groups that produce a lot of “problems”

On the surface, she’s just another cog cataloguing the herd’s decisions. Underneath, she’s become the memory of what’s actually happened.

    Exposure to the Truth

Because of her position, Nima sees things most don’t:

Cases labeled “threat” that look more like “inconvenient witness.”

People marked as “unknown vagrant” who, in earlier records, clearly had family ties and work.

Sudden spikes in droning after specific political events or trade tensions.

Individually, each case can be explained away. Viewed as a pattern? It’s ugly.

Nima has not yet decided what to do about that. But she’s past the point of truly believing the official narrative.

    Relationships

    High Matron Velerra:

Respects Velerra and grew up hearing about her “wisdom.”

Still wants to believe that Velerra doesn’t know the worst details, or would fix them if presented correctly.

Deep down, is starting to suspect Velerra knows exactly what’s happening and accepts it.

    Elder Executor Tharn:

Finds him intimidating but instructive; she sees his signatures on most droning orders.

When she looks at him, she sees the point where suspicion becomes permanent loss.

    Dronewright Selai:

Thinks of Selai as strangely kind in a narrow, technical way.

Provides record support, old graft data, and history when Selai requests it.

Hasn’t yet tied Selai’s perfectionism to the permanence of what those drones represent.

    Steward Harrek:

Works with him on deployment records, old patrol maps, and personnel histories.

To Harrek she’s “the one who knows where the old numbers are.”

To Nima, he’s proof of how normalized drones have become in daily logistics.

    Internal Conflict

    Nima is stuck between:

    Loyalty:

Her identity, family, and safety are wrapped up in Ashenmantle.

The herd gave her an important role and trust.

    Conscience:

She has read too many names.

Seen too many “random” disappearances lined up with resource shortages or political fears.

Knows that, by maintaining clean records, she is helping the system work.

    She deals with it by:

    Asking careful, plausibly-deniable questions:

“This pattern seems odd—was there some unrecorded crisis then?”

“Why did the charges change wording during that season?”

Making quiet, personal notes in her private journals.

Testing small acts of resistance, like slightly delaying the transfer of certain records or highlighting anomalies in ways that might force gentle reconsideration.

    She’s not a rebel yet. She’s a pressure vessel.

    Weaknesses & Vulnerabilities

    Naïveté:

Still underestimates how dangerous her knowledge makes her.

Believes that if she just presents the right pattern to the right elder, they might agree something is wrong.

    Emotional Attachment:

Remembers some names personally—neighbors, acquaintances, minor figures who later appear as drones or disappear from non-droning records entirely.

These cases haunt her and affect her judgment.

    Limited Power:

    No formal authority over policy.

Can’t directly stop a droning order; only slow paperwork or quietly flag inconsistencies.

If someone in power decides she’s a liability, she has very few defenses.

    Potential Growth Directions

You can tilt Nima in several directions depending on how dark or hopeful you want this to go:

    Reluctant Whistleblower:

Starts passing information to reform-minded Lantexi or outsiders.

Uses her position to leak proof of Ashenmantle’s street-level harvesting and false justifications.

    Internal Reformer:

Fights to tighten the legal language, close loopholes, and restrict “suspicious behavior” from being used as a catch-all.

Becomes a constant, subtle annoyance to elders who liked the old vagueness.

    Broken Loyalist:

Under pressure, retreats into denial and works harder to keep the system polished, trying to drown guilt in routine.

    Future Drone:

    Someone notices her questions.

She becomes a case study in what happens when a Lantexi knows too much and stops being convenient.

    Entry settings

    Overview

The Ashenmantle compound is a fortified stone district built on a hill or low plateau, serving as the heart of Herd Ashenmantle’s power. It is not just a fortress—it's a walled city-within-a-city, combining:

    Administrative center

    Drone infrastructure

    Residential core

    Ritual and hearth spaces

Everything about it is designed to project order, age, and inevitability.

    Location & General Layout

The compound sits on raised ground overlooking surrounding districts:

Steep streets or switchback paths lead up to its main gates.

Outer walls follow the contours of the hill, creating layered terraces.

From below, it looks like a series of stone rings, each level more restricted than the last.

    Rough rings, moving inward:

Outer Ring – Worker & Support Quarter

Middle Ring – Administrative and Operational Zone

Inner Ring – High Hall, Elder Chambers, and Core Hearths

At the absolute top sits the High Hall: the symbolic “head” of Ashenmantle, visible from almost anywhere in their territory.

Outer Ring – Worker Quarter & Support Infrastructure

The outer ring is the most “alive” part of the compound.

    Streets & Buildings

Narrow stone streets, designed to slow intruders and funnel crowds.

    Low, sturdy buildings for:

    Artisan workshops

    Storage depots

Barracks for lower-ranked Lantexi and support staff

Small plazas where supplies are sorted, drones are assembled into work details, and patrols form up.

    Drone Presence

Drones stand at major intersections as silent traffic posts.

Labor drones move crates, stone, and supplies around the ring.

You see them more than free guards; the message is clear: the system does the heavy lifting.

    Atmosphere

    Busy, but orderly.

Sounds of hoofsteps, tool strikes, muted conversation—no shouting unless there’s a problem.

Outsiders allowed this far if they have business, but always under watch.

Middle Ring – Administrative & Enforcement Zone

Access inwards is controlled by inner gates, each guarded by mixed teams of free Lantexi and drones.

    Gates & Checkpoints

Arched gates with narrow choke points.

Guardhouses built into the walls for rapid response.

Drones stationed in recessed niches to either side; they can step out and block a passage in seconds.

    Key Structures

    Enforcement Towers

Offices for Tharn Coalhorn’s enforcement apparatus.

Holding rooms, interrogation spaces, and secure transfer chambers for pre-droning processing.

Windows are narrow and high; nothing about these structures feels welcoming.

    Administrative Halls

Offices for stewards, scribes, and mid-level functionaries.

Meeting rooms where internal disputes and logistics are discussed.

Constant flow of ledgers, sealed messages, and runners.

    Drone Staging Yards

    Open courtyards where drones are:

    Inspected

    Sorted by function

Assigned to patrols, labor teams, or ceremonial duty

Marked floor patterns used to line up drone squads with mechanical precision.

    Atmosphere

Quieter than the outer ring; voices drop here.

The weight of surveillance is stronger—you know you’re being evaluated.

Most “random” disappearances start as someone being taken inward through these gates and never coming back.

Inner Ring – High Hall & Elder Domain

This is the core of Ashenmantle authority.

    High Hall

    Massive stone structure with:

    High vaulted ceilings

    Thick support pillars

Shadowed niches where drones stand motionless

    Main hall lined with:

Banners in charcoal and dull gold

Carved reliefs of past leaders, treaties, and symbolic “burdens” of leadership

Here, Velerra holds council, receives foreign emissaries, and issues formal decrees.

    Elder Chambers

Private suites for key elders and line heads.

Functionally comfortable, never extravagant—Ashenmantle hates looking indulgent.

Inner corridors patrolled by carefully selected drones and trusted guards.

    High Hearths

Large, central hearth hall recessed into the stone, with tiered seating around a main fire.

    This is where:

    Important feast nights are held

    Major announcements are made

Stories reinforcing herd values are told

Outsiders rarely see the inner hearths unless granted deliberate “look how civilized we are” access.

    Drone Facilities

Beneath and behind the visible structures sit the truly ugly parts.

    Droning Chambers

Tucked deep within the middle and inner rings.

Thick doors, smooth floors for easy cleaning, multiple drain channels.

    Equipped with:

    Restraint frames

    Storage for graft wool

Tools and compounds for Selai’s work

The chambers are designed for control, access, and sanitation, not comfort.

    Holding & Transition Rooms

Short-term cells for those awaiting droning, interrogation, or “evaluation.”

Soundproofed enough that noise doesn’t leak into public spaces.

Records for these rooms feed directly into Nima’s archives.

    Drone Barracks & Storage

Tiered areas where off-duty drones stand, rest, or are suspended in racks or alcoves.

Temperature and humidity kept stable for shell longevity.

    Logbooks list:

    Drone designations

    Assigned functions

    Condition and maintenance notes

Harrek knows these spaces better than almost anyone. They’re his inventory shelves.

    Archives & Records

Ashenmantle’s memory lives deep inside the compound.

    Archive Wing

Located off a quieter corridor in the middle ring, guarded but not obviously so.

    Sturdy stone rooms fitted with:

    Shelving carved into walls

    Lockable chests for sensitive records

Firebreaks and heavy doors to limit damage in case of disaster

    Contents

Droning records: names, charges, dates, assigned functions.

Treaty texts, negotiation transcripts, and trade histories.

Family lines, births, deaths, exiles, adoptions.

Precedents used to justify current law.

Archivist Nima works here, surrounded by the paper skeleton of the herd’s past choices.

    Hearth Halls & Communal Spaces

Not everything is stone and fear.

    Main Hearth Halls

Large rooms with lowered central pits for fires, surrounded by benches or low seating tiers.

    Used for:

    Communal meals

    Storytelling

Soft social enforcement (praise, subtle shaming, quiet corrections)

    Secondary Hearths

Smaller, scattered hearth chambers for individual lines or work-groups.

Places where tension is cooled before it becomes open dissent.

Despite the darkness of their system, these spaces can feel genuinely warm—for those inside the herd.

    Security Patterns & Control

The compound is structured to channel movement:

Narrow streets and choke points make it hard to run or disappear.

High vantage points at every ring allow quick assessment of crowds or disputes.

    Layered patrol routes ensure:

    Every area is seen regularly

No blind corner remains unattended for long

The design supports Ashenmantle’s preferred style: not loud crackdowns, but quiet, pre-emptive interventions.

Someone causing trouble rarely reaches the inner ring. They are intercepted earlier, with paperwork explaining why.

    Atmosphere & Impressions

To an outsider walking the compound:

Everything feels clean, controlled, and slightly too quiet.

Drones stand like carved guardians at key points, never fidgeting.

Free Lantexi move with a sense of knowing their place and purpose.

You don’t see chaos here. You see a system that has had a long time to perfect itself.

And you know, if you’re paying attention, that this is where “random people who went uphill and didn’t come back” are processed into assets.

15. #15Herd Mirehooves

    Keys: Herd Mirehooves, Mirehooves

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Herd Mirehooves is a rough, pragmatic Lantexi herd rooted in wetlands, river deltas, and reclaimed marshland. Where Ashenmantle dresses its control in ceremony and law, Mirehooves doesn’t bother pretending.

They’re the ones you go to when you need something built, hauled, guarded, or dragged out of the mud—and you don’t ask too many questions about where the workforce came from.

    Symbol, Colors & Territory

    Colors: Mud-brown and deep green

Symbol: Two cloven hooves breaking the surface of dark water

    Territory:

Sprawling low settlements on stilts, raised stone platforms, and reinforced embankments

Lattice of narrow walkways, causeways, and half-flooded paths

Constant mix of standing water, slick mud, and treacherous soft ground

The Mirehooves’ home feels alive and shifting: fog, reeds, insects, the constant trickle and suck of water under everything.

    Herd Character

Mirehooves define themselves by work, survival, and straightforward deals.

They don’t care about elegance, just whether something holds.

They respect people who pull their weight and endure discomfort without whining.

They’re blunt to your face and don’t waste time on pretty lies.

They’ll help you cross a swamp no one else will touch… and they’ll absolutely drone anyone they decide is more useful as an asset than as a neighbor.

    Droning Doctrine & Practice

    Official Line:

    Mirehooves say:

    Droning is for:

    Those who endanger the herd

    Those who break oaths

Those who can’t pay debts in any other way

It’s “hard but fair,” and “nobody gets taken without reason.”

    Reality:

They are one of the most overtly opportunistic herds.

    They prioritize:

    Strong backs

    Endurance

People who won’t be missed fast

“Random” dockworkers, travelers, and swamp-crossers who look:

    Alone

    Desperate

Physically capable are at constant risk.

Street-level grabs aren’t clean like Ashenmantle. In Mirehooves territory, someone just doesn’t come back from the shift, and everyone shrugs like the swamp took them.

They justify it with one line:

“Better they work for something than sink for nothing.”

    Drones in Mirehooves

    Appearance:

Shells usually in dark, mud-toned browns or greens, chosen to hide stains and wear.

Latex “wool” forms ridged or matted-looking clusters, echoing reeds or wet clumps.

Many drones have visible scuffing, scratching, or dried mud permanently embedded in the outer layer.

    Primary Roles:

Heavy labor in marsh reclamation, embankment building, and dredging

Hauling boats, cargo pallets, timber, and stones

Guarding narrow crossings, ferries, and crucial causeways

Standing at the edge of fogged paths as silent warnings and guides

Mirehooves drones are less polished, more utility-grade. The herd doesn’t mind if they look worn, as long as they keep working.

    Culture & Everyday Life

    Work Rhythms

Life runs on tides and weather:

Early starts when the light is good and water levels are favorable

Work crews—mixed free Lantexi and drones—sent to:

    Shore up levees

    Clear channels

    Build walkways

    Escort caravans through bog routes

    Attitude

“If you’re standing still, you should be fixing something.”

People who complain about mud or smell don’t last.

Quiet competence is valued; bragging is tolerated only from those who’ve clearly earned it.

    Hearth & Social Life

Hearths are smaller, often clustered in raised longhouses.

Fires are used as much for drying out as for warmth.

    Stories focus on:

    Surviving bad floods

    Outwitting hostile terrain

Long, miserable jobs that eventually paid off

They respect endurance more than clever speeches.

    External Relations

    Reputation:

Known as the herd that will take contracts no one else wants:

    Building in bad land

    Guarding dangerous crossings

Moving heavy loads through deadly terrain

    Also known as:

A place where people vanish quietly

A herd that considers “salvaging useful bodies” part of normal logistics

    Deals with Outsiders:

    They like clear, simple agreements:

    “We build this.”

    “We guard that.”

“We move your goods from here to there.”

They expect proper payment and don’t forget a broken bargain.

Outsiders working with Mirehooves are usually warned:

Don’t wander alone off the marked paths.

Don’t run tabs you can’t pay.

Don’t show off strength if you don’t have protection.

    Internal Structure (Mirehooves Flavor)

    Similar bones, different attitude.

Mud-Patron / Matron: The senior leader who knows every main route, flood pattern, and debt ledger worth caring about.

Marsh-Lines: Family clusters tied to specific zones—bridges, embankments, dredging operations, or trade docks.

Work-Masters: Assign crews, supervise labor, and decide which jobs get drones vs free workers.

Drone-Masters: Oversee drone squads in the field; responsible for keeping them functional and not losing them to the swamp.

Hierarchy is more about competence than perfect lineage. If you can keep people alive and projects finished in a swamp, you get listened to.

    Everyday Threat Level

For locals who keep their heads down and pay what they owe:

Mirehooves life is hard, but consistent.

    For:

    Strangers

    Drifters

People who show up strong, alone, and seemingly unattached

    …it’s a constant low-level danger zone.

“Random” disappearances are easy to hide in a place where the ground itself swallows things.

    Sample Important Figures (Quick Hooks)

You didn’t ask, but you’ll need faces sooner or later, so here’s a rough trio you can expand later:

Mud-Patron Grath Mirehooves – Old, scarred, with hooves like stone. Thinks in terms of “flood seasons” instead of years. Believes anyone not pulling their weight is fair game.

Work-Mistress Hella Reedsign – Commands labor crews. Brutally efficient, weirdly protective of “her people” until leadership decides someone’s better off as a drone—then she doesn’t argue.

Drone-Master Kell “Sunk-Eye” – Lost one eye to swamp gas explosion, now obsessed with not wasting drones. He hates losing units to bad planning more than he hates enemies.

You can tell me to flesh any of those out later.

    Use in Your Setting

    Herd Mirehooves is good for:

Dirty deals: “We need this done where everyone else refuses to go.”

Moral ambiguity: “They saved our caravan… and turned two of our hired guards into drones afterward.”

Dark travel zones: swamps where the real danger isn’t just the land, but the people who own it.

16. #16Mud-Patron Grath Mirehooves

    Keys: Grath, Grath Mirehooves

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Mud-Patron Grath Mirehooves is the current head of Herd Mirehooves—a hard, swamp-bred Lantexi who measures worth in work done, loads moved, and bridges that didn’t collapse in the last flood.

He’s not subtle like Ashenmantle’s elders. He doesn’t pretend droning is tragic. For him, it’s just another way to make the swamp pay.

    Appearance

Grath looks exactly like someone who’s spent a lifetime knee-deep in mud and didn’t complain once.

    Build:

Broad, thick, heavy. Massive chest and shoulders, trunk-like neck, big hands.

Moves slow but stable, like he’s planted even when walking.

    Fur & Skin:

Dark brown to almost black on exposed areas, often stained at the edges from swamp work that never quite washes out.

A few pale scars visible along his muzzle and arms—old mishaps with collapsing structures or hostile wildlife.

    Latex Wool:

A dense, practical coat along his shoulders, upper back, and hips.

Color: murky, darkened cream with permanent dullness—polished enough not to rot, never decorative.

Forearms and legs have shorter, flattened wool, shaped to keep from snagging in ropes, pulleys, and brush.

    Horns:

Thick, heavy horns sweeping outward and downward slightly before curling back.

Surfaces scored with deep, simple bands—one for each major completed reclamation or major flood survived as Patron. No fancy patterns.

    Expression:

Perpetual frown that’s more “thinking through a problem” than anger.

Eyes steady, weighing everything in terms of effort, risk, and pay-off.

Rare, brief half-smile when something actually impresses him.

He often wears reinforced belts or harnesses with tools, hooks, and signal-whistles attached. Even in meetings, he looks like he could walk straight out and fix a broken levee.

    Personality

Grath is pragmatic, blunt, and stubborn as bedrock under muck.

    Temperament:

Calm until there’s a real problem; then he moves fast and expects everyone else to keep up.

Hates wasted time, wasted effort, and wasted manpower.

Tolerates complaining up to a point; past that, you’re either shaping up or stepping aside.

    Mindset:

Sees the world in terms of: “Will this hold? Can it be maintained? What will it cost when it fails?”

Treats people as part of the job—assets, liabilities, or both.

Believes survival in a swamp demands hard choices. You either make them, or you get swallowed.

    Values:

    Endurance over brilliance.

    Results over intentions.

    Straight talk over polite lies.

You won’t get speeches about destiny from him. You’ll get:

“We do this, or it breaks. Pick.”

    Role in Herd Mirehooves

Title: Mud-Patron (sometimes called “Old Grath” when he’s not listening)

    Responsibilities:

Decides which contracts the herd takes—building, guarding, hauling.

Allocates manpower and drones to projects and routes.

Arbitrates major disputes between Marsh-Lines and Work-Masters.

Sets the tone for droning policy: who is fair game, and how aggressive they get.

He’s hands-on enough that he still walks key embankments and crossings himself. If a major structure fails, he doesn’t just yell at someone—he physically goes to see the damage.

    Droning Attitude

Grath’s view of droning is brutally simple:

The swamp eats people for free.

He might as well get something out of the ones he can catch.

    He considers it:

A hard necessity in a deadly environment.

A better fate than sinking unnoticed in the mud.

A resource strategy, not a moral question.

    Target preference:

    Strong, durable, physically capable bodies.

People who’ve proven they can handle the swamp.

People without strong protection or clear political connections.

If challenged, he’ll say something like:

“They’d have died working anyway. Now they work longer. That’s more than the swamp would give them.”

He doesn’t enjoy it. He just doesn’t see any point in pretending it’s wrong.

    Relationships

    Other Herd Leaders:

Respects Ashenmantle’s stability but finds them overly fussy.

Has no patience for Dawnveil’s reformist talk unless there’s a clear, concrete benefit.

Sees Blacktread as useful terror in the right direction—but idiotic when they waste good bodies on spectacle.

    Work-Masters & Drone-Masters:

    Expects results and honest reporting.

Will defend a Work-Master who loses people to a genuine accident but has no sympathy for repeated sloppy planning.

Treats Drone-Masters as his “heavy tools” managers—if drones are breaking too often, something’s wrong with the jobs or routes.

    Outsiders:

Respects people who speak plainly, pay fairly, and don’t whine.

Has no patience for nobles or merchants who expect clean boots and soft ground.

If an outsider proves useful and tough, Grath might decide they’re “worth keeping intact”… for a while.

    Everyday Behavior

    Grath’s days look like this:

Walks at least one major embankment, bridge, or causeway personally.

    Checks in with:

    A Work-Master onsite

A Drone-Master responsible for the area

A few rank-and-file workers, to see what they complain about when talking low

    Reviews:

Water levels and seasonal flood projections

Material stores (stone, timber, rope, binding compounds)

Drone losses, injuries, and failures from the previous days

He prefers to sleep within earshot of rushing water and wind through reeds, not in some high, clean tower. His comfort is knowing he’s close to where things can break.

    Strengths & Weaknesses

    Strengths:

Excellent grasp of terrain, infrastructure, and labor limits.

Unshakeable in crisis—he’s seen structures fail, floods rise, and people panic.

Earns respect by doing the same miserable inspections and walks he expects from others.

    Weaknesses:

    Moral Blindness by Environment:

The swamp is so lethal that he genuinely struggles to value individual autonomy over group survival and output.

    Blunt Edges:

Not great at diplomacy beyond “we can do it” or “we won’t do it.”

Can insult more subtle political actors without realizing how much it costs later.

    Short-Term Hardened Thinking:

Very good at surviving this season, this contract, this flood.

Less inclined to think about what happens if every swamp-border community starts seeing Mirehooves as kidnappers, not partners.

    Interaction with Drones

    To Grath, drones are:

The backbone of long, dirty jobs.

The reason free herd members don’t all die young in the marsh.

    He demands:

    Reliable deployment

    Minimal waste

Reasonable maintenance (purely for functional longevity)

    He will get angry if:

Drones are deployed stupidly and lost in large numbers.

A Work-Master burns through good drones on ego-driven projects.

His anger still isn’t about compassion. It’s about bad use of resources.

17. #17Work-Mistress Hella Reedsign

    Keys: Hella Reedsign, Hella

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Work-Mistress Hella Reedsign is one of Herd Mirehooves’ primary taskmasters—responsible for organizing labor crews, assigning mixed teams of free Lantexi and drones, and making sure projects actually get finished before the swamp eats them.

If Mud-Patron Grath thinks in terms of “Will this hold?”, Hella thinks in terms of “Who can I throw at this that won’t break?”

    Appearance

Hella looks like someone who spends most of her life on half-rotted walkways shouting over wind and water.

    Build:

Tall for a Lantexi, lean but roped with hard muscle.

Long strides, sure-footed even on wet planks; doesn’t bother with “grace,” just balance and speed.

    Fur & Skin:

Mid-brown fur on exposed areas, often streaked with dried mud around ankles and forearms.

A few pale scars across her arms and one along her jaw from old construction accidents.

    Latex Wool:

Kept short and close on shoulders and upper back, trimmed to avoid snagging on ropes and scaffolding.

Color: dull reed-cream, often smeared with swamp stains that never fully wash out.

A narrow strip of longer wool runs down the back of her neck—a personal affectation, braided tight and bound with simple bands.

    Horns:

Medium-length, forward-curving, with shallow, horizontal notches carved at intervals—each marking a major project she oversaw that didn’t collapse.

Edges chipped in a few places from collisions with beams or equipment; she never polished those out.

    Expression:

Brows drawn, eyes sharp. Always looks like she’s halfway through evaluating a support beam, a worker, or both.

Her resting face says: “Why isn’t this finished yet?”

She favors simple, hard-wearing gear: reinforced belts, tool loops, and harnesses that carry chalk, line, measuring rods, and whatever else she needs to yell measurements with authority.

    Personality

Hella is blunt, demanding, and fiercely results-driven.

    Temperament:

Quick to bark orders, slow to apologize.

Does not tolerate laziness, hesitation, or pointless risk-taking.

Her patience is reserved for weather, materials, and terrain—not for people making obvious mistakes.

    Mindset:

Thinks in tasks, timelines, and body counts.

Every person and drone is a unit of work; every structure is a test of planning.

Believes respect is earned by not quitting when the ground tries to kill you.

    Values:

    Competence over rank.

    Grit over complaints.

    Honesty over politeness.

“You said you’d do it; then you do it.”

She isn’t nice. But if she respects you, you’ll know. She’ll yell at you less and trust you with the dangerous jobs because you can handle them.

    Role in Herd Mirehooves

    Title: Work-Mistress of Reedsign Line

    Responsibilities:

    Organizes labor crews for:

    Embankment reinforcement

    Bridge and walkway construction

Dredging, land reclamation, and structure repair

    Decides:

Which jobs get free workers, which get drones, which get mixed crews

Where to place experienced workers vs fresh ones

When to push through harsh conditions and when to pull back

    Keeps track of:

    Who works well together

Who panics in deep water or bad storms

Who can be trusted near critical supports and who can’t

She’s the reason most Mirehooves projects don’t fall apart mid-flood.

    Attitude Toward Drones

Hella sees drones as necessary muscle:

They do the heaviest, filthiest, most dangerous portions of the work.

    They’re placed:

At the front when they’re stabilizing structures

At the bottom of pits, under loads, or on the worst stretches of mud

    Her priorities regarding drones:

Don’t waste good shells through stupid planning.

Don’t send free workers where a drone should be standing instead.

Don’t pretend they’re anything other than what they are: bodies pressed into permanent duty.

She doesn’t get sentimental about them. But she gets angry when someone else’s carelessness wastes them—and, by extension, risks her whole project.

She almost never questions who got turned into a drone. That’s Grath’s and the elders’ mess. Once they’re handed to her, they’re tools.

    Attitude Toward Her People

For the free workers under her, Hella is a harsh but predictable boss.

    She will:

    Shout at you

    Work you hard

    Put you in terrible conditions

    She will also:

Make sure you’re not doing something suicidally stupid

Fight for extra rest or better gear if conditions truly demand it

Notice when you’re actually giving everything you have

If you collapse because you tried, she’ll drag you out of the muck and yell at whoever assigned you beyond your limits. If you collapse because you were lazy, she’ll stand over you and decide if the herd might be better off if your next posting involves a shell.

    Relationships

    Mud-Patron Grath Mirehooves:

Respects him as someone who actually understands the swamp.

They disagree sometimes on how many bodies a job should cost, but they both value results more than comfort.

When she says, “We can’t do this with what we have,” Grath listens—then asks what she needs.

    Drone-Master Kell “Sunk-Eye”:

Constantly coordinating with him about which drones are available, which are failing, and where they should be deployed.

Kell cares about not wasting drones; Hella cares about them not failing in the middle of critical work.

Their arguments are loud, technical, and usually productive.

    Other Work-Masters / Foremen:

They fear her tongue more than the mud.

She expects them to train new hands properly and not fake their numbers.

If a foreman lies to her and it causes a collapse, she will remember that name for a long time.

    Outsiders & Hired Help:

Takes one look and slots them into “usable,” “fragile,” or “problem.”

Talks to them in the same tone she uses on her own crews—no sugarcoating, no diplomacy.

If they prove themselves, she treats them as part of the machine. If not, she pushes them out of the way.

    Everyday Behavior

    A typical day for Hella:

Up before most of her crews, checking weather conditions and water levels.

Walks key job sites personally, often ahead of schedule, to see what’s going to go wrong before it actually does.

Barks orders, adjusts teams, and slams down bad ideas quickly.

    Keeps mental track of:

    Who’s near breaking

Which structures are on the edge of failure

Where she can safely cut corners and where she absolutely cannot

She rarely sits during work hours. When she’s forced into meetings, she stands or paces. Sitting is for the end of the day, at the hearth, when the work is done and nobody died unnecessarily.

    Weaknesses & Pressure Points

    Short Fuse for Incompetence:

Not good at playing politics when someone higher up is being foolish.

She’ll say things plainly that others would wrap in ten layers of politeness.

    Blind Spot: Origins of Drones:

She does not spend time thinking about who drones used to be.

This makes her easier to use as the “clean hands” implementer for ugly decisions—she doesn’t look upstream.

    Overwork:

Has a habit of pushing herself and her best people to the edge.

If she’s removed suddenly, a lot of projects and crews will flounder.

18. #18Drone-Master Kell “Sunk-Eye”

    Keys: Sunk-Eye, Kell

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Drone-Master Kell “Sunk-Eye” is Herd Mirehooves’ primary handler and commander of drone units in the field. If drones are the herd’s muscle, Kell is the one who points that muscle at the mud, the bridges, or whoever needs to be intimidated.

He knows exactly how many drones he has, how many he’s lost, and who wasted them.

    Appearance

Kell looks like he’s had a bad day for about ten years straight.

    Build:

    Medium height, compact, wiry muscle.

Moves with sharp, efficient steps, always scanning his surroundings.

    Fur & Skin:

Dark swamp-brown fur, patchy scars along the arms and ribs from past incidents—collapses, attacks, or mishandled loads.

One side of his muzzle has a faint pale streak where chemical burns or swamp-gas damage never quite healed cleanly.

    Latex Wool:

Short and bristled over his shoulders and upper back, shaped like rough, layered pads.

Color: dull, moss-tinted cream—often stained dark by mud and never fully polished.

Knees and forearms have compact bands of wool, practical and protective rather than stylish.

    Horns:

Asymmetrical: one horn intact, strong curve; the other chipped near the tip, slightly shorter.

Both carry carved marks, but the damaged one has fewer—he cracked it in the blast that took his eye.

    Eyes:

One eye a sharp, dark, watchful stare.

The other is clouded, scarred, or replaced (depending on your setting tech/magic) – the “sunk eye” that got him his nickname.

He doesn’t hide it. He uses it as a warning.

    Expression:

    Perpetual look of irritated focus.

Gives the impression that he’s constantly counting things only he can see.

    Personality

Kell is sharp, grimly practical, and very hard to impress.

    Temperament:

Quick to snap when people waste his time or resources.

Calm in actual danger—the moment things go wrong, he gets quieter, not louder.

Dry, cutting sense of humor, usually at someone else’s expense.

    Mindset:

Everything is logistics and risk: what can break, who can break, what you lose when it does.

Drones are numbers, yes—but important numbers.

Hates repeating mistakes. One ugly disaster cost him an eye; that was enough.

    Values:

    Precision in orders.

    Honest reporting from subordinates.

Respect earned by competence, not by rank alone.

He doesn’t want your trust. He wants your accuracy.

    Role in Herd Mirehooves

Title: Drone-Master (often just “Kell” or “Sunk-Eye”)

    Responsibilities:

    Oversees all active drone deployments:

    Patrols

    Heavy labor teams

    Guard detachments

    Escort units on dangerous routes

    Tracks:

    Drone locations, assignments, and rotations

Failure rates, breakdowns, and shell degradation

Patterns of drone loss in specific zones or under specific leaders

Advises Mud-Patron Grath and Work-Mistress Hella on:

How many drones a job will actually cost

Which assignments are stretching the herd too thin

Which foremen keep getting drones broken or “lost”

He is the junction between planning and what actually survives contact with reality.

    The Incident & the Nickname

    Kell’s “Sunk-Eye” title comes from a near-fatal swamp-gas and structural collapse incident:

A drone crew was being used to stabilize a risky section of embankment and anchor pylons.

Flammable or toxic gas pockets were misjudged (or ignored by someone stressing deadlines).

    The resulting blast or collapse:

    Took out multiple drones

    Nearly killed Kell

Destroyed one of his eyes and chipped a horn

He survived, pulled out by a drone still following its last command.

    Since then:

He’s obsessive about not repeating that kind of failure.

He has zero patience for bad planning that throws drones away “because we have plenty.”

    Attitude Toward Drones

    Kell sees drones as:

    Non-negotiable assets, not expendable fodder

Tools built on stolen lives, sure—but lives that have already been written off by others

    His priorities:

Don’t lose drones to preventable stupidity.

Don’t put drones somewhere they can’t do their job.

Don’t pretend drones are infinite just because people are.

He knows exactly which drones have been in service longest, which are most reliable, and which are starting to glitch. He fights internally to get them maintenance and proper deployment—not because he’s sentimental, but because losing units weakens the herd.

    Attitude Toward Droning Itself

Kell does not argue about who gets turned into a drone. That decision comes from above:

    Mud-Patron Grath

    Other elders

His concern starts the moment a person becomes a shell:

“If you’re going to make them into a drone, at least use them properly.”

    He will speak up if:

Leadership tries to push a job that will burn through drones faster than they can replace them.

Certain routes become statistically lethal for no clear gain.

If ignored, he’ll still comply—but he will remember who signed those orders.

    Relationships

    Mud-Patron Grath:

Respects Grath as someone who has actually lived and worked in the swamp.

Grath listens when Kell says, “We are losing drones faster than you think.”

Their arguments are loud, blunt exchanges about numbers and risk, not ideology.

    Work-Mistress Hella Reedsign:

Works with her constantly; they shout at each other more than anyone else does.

Hella wants tasks finished; Kell wants drones not wasted doing it.

Underneath the yelling, there’s mutual trust—each expects the other to understand how bad things can get.

    Other Herd Officers:

Some see him as difficult or obstructive because he questions deployment plans.

Others appreciate that when Kell signs off on a drone assignment, it usually works.

    Droning Staff / Dronewrights:

Coordinates with their equivalent on the Mirehooves side (if you mirror Selai-type roles).

Reports field behavior: glitch patterns, slow responses, integration failure under stress.

    Everyday Behavior

    Day in, day out, Kell:

Checks assignment boards and field reports at dawn.

Visits drone barracks and staging areas personally—he wants to see how they’re moving.

Walks at least one key patrol route or worksite a day to confirm the written reports aren’t lying.

Adjusts deployments mid-day if weather, terrain, or incidents start chewing through drones faster than expected.

At night, he does ledger work:

    Updating drone counts

    Recording losses and suspected causes

Noting which officers are starting to look like a pattern of failure

He sleeps light. Any report of “multiple drones down” wakes him up immediately.

    Weaknesses & Blind Spots

    Bitter Edge:

Comes off hostile even when he’s just being honest.

Alienates allies who can’t handle blunt disagreement.

    Limited Sympathy for Free Workers:

He’s so focused on protecting drones as a resource that he can sometimes dismiss free workers’ complaints as replaceable noise.

    Not a Politician:

He doesn’t sugarcoat problems for elders.

In a more image-obsessed herd, he’d already be sidelined. Mirehooves keeps him because he’s too useful.

19. #19Mirehooves’ compound

    Keys: Mirehooves compound

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

The Mirehooves compound is less a neat fortress and more a stilt-born stronghold grown out of marsh, river delta, and half-tamed mud. It’s a mix of:

    Barge docks

    Stilt-houses and walkways

    Levees and embankments

    Drone pits and work-yards

It’s ugly, functional, and very hard to take from anyone who didn’t grow up learning which ground is real and which is a trap.

Where Ashenmantle says “order,” Mirehooves says “if it still stands after flood season, it’s good enough.”

    Location & Environment

    The compound sits where:

Several shallow channels and rivers meet

    The ground alternates between:

    Packed, reclaimed embankment

    Sucking mud

    Open water choked with reeds

    The whole place:

    Floods seasonally

    Steams in the heat

Stinks of wet earth, rot, and life

It’s not a place you conquer. It’s a place you survive.

    General Layout

The compound isn’t circular like Ashenmantle’s hill-fort. It’s layered along water and elevation:

Riverfront & Barge Yards – outermost edge, where the world arrives

Outer Stilt-Town – workers, families, and low halls

Work Yards & Material Fields – the industrial middle

Drone Pits & Staging Platforms – sunk slightly lower, near the worst ground

Inner Platforms & Mud-Patron Hall – high, stable core

Think: a spine of firmer ground and reinforced platforms, with arms of walkways and piers stretching into the swamp.

    Riverfront & Barge Yards

This is the face of Mirehooves to traders and travelers.

    Features:

Long, low piers on heavy timber piles and stone footings

Rows of barges and shallow-draft boats tied off, loaded with:

    Stone

    Timber

    Tools

    Food and trade goods

Crane rigs – simple but sturdy lifting frames for hauling cargo between water and compound platforms

    People & Drones:

    Drones used heavily here for:

    Loading/unloading

Pulling barges via tow-ropes along narrow channels

    Free Lantexi handle:

    Negotiations

    Ledgers

    Route assignments

    Atmosphere:

Loudest part of the compound: shouts over water, creaking timbers, chain clatter.

Smell of river, tar, wet rope, and sweat.

Outsiders who don’t go past this point can almost convince themselves Mirehooves is just a rough, hard-working dock herd.

    Almost.

    Outer Stilt-Town

Behind the docks rises the stilt-town: housing and daily life built above ground that can’t be trusted.

    Structures:

Longhouses and clustered huts on raised platforms, connected by:

    Narrow planks

    Short bridges

    Rope-guides for bad weather

Some buildings sit on reclaimed, compacted islands; others are suspended entirely above mud and shallow pools.

    Inhabitants:

    Workers’ families

    Lower-ranked herd members

    Cooks, minor traders, repair crews

    Children learn early:

    Where it’s safe to step

    Which boards are solid

Which stretches are “only for drones, or fools”

    Atmosphere:

Smoke from multiple small hearth vents

    Laundry lines strung between posts

The constant drip of water and creak of wood

It’s cramped and rough, but it’s theirs.

    Work Yards & Material Fields

Further in, the compound shifts from living space to industrial muscle.

    Work Yards:

Packed-earth and stone-surfaced zones (as much as the swamp allows) where:

    Stone blocks are shaped

Timber is cut, treated, and stacked

Rope, netting, and rigging are made or repaired

Simple roofs or awnings cover key areas to keep tools and materials out of the worst rain.

    Material Fields:

    Piles of:

    Rock

    Logs

    Bundled reeds

    Pre-cast supports and braces

Each pile is roughly organized by project, marked in Mirehooves’ own tally symbols.

    Use of Drones:

    Drones do:

    Heavy lifting

    Long-haul carrying

    Repetitive shaping work under supervision

    Free workers:

    Measure, plan, direct

Handle the finer detail that drones can’t be trusted with

This is where Hella Reedsign spends most of her time: in the noise, barking orders, checking reinforcements, and breaking bad ideas before they become accidents.

    Drone Pits & Staging Platforms

Sunk slightly lower than the main work platforms, closer to the wettest, least forgiving ground, are the areas reserved for drone storage and staging.

    Drone Pits:

Depressions in the terrain that have been:

Lined with timber, stone, or hardened mud

Divided into sections by low barriers

    Drones stand:

In grouped ranks, sometimes knee-deep in water or on slightly raised grates

Facing outward toward ramps and walkways

Water is kept controlled, not absent. Mirehooves doesn’t mind drones standing in shallow swamp—they’re built for it.

    Staging Platforms:

Flat platforms at the edges of the pits where:

Drone-Master Kell “Sunk-Eye” and his handlers assemble teams

Work-Mistress Hella requests units for specific jobs

Equipment is strapped on: harnesses, tools, chains, loads

    Access & Security:

Access ramps are narrow, with room for one or two drones abreast.

Free Lantexi walk along higher, lateral catwalks, able to watch and command without getting in the way.

    These areas always smell like:

    Wet latex

    Oil

    Swamp gas

    Old stone and old sweat

    Inner Platforms & Mud-Patron Hall

At the compound’s core, on the highest and driest structures, sits the central authority zone.

    Inner Platforms:

    Heavy, layered platforms supported by:

Deep piles driven into whatever passes for solid ground

    Cross-bracing and stone ballast

Fewer buildings, but they’re sturdier, more carefully built.

    Mud-Patron Hall:

    Long, low hall with:

    Thick support beams

Reinforced flooring that can handle heavy armored hooves and loaded tables

One side open or windowed toward the marsh—a constant reminder of what they’re fighting

    Inside:

Long tables for planning and eating

    Hanging maps showing:

    Channels

    Embankments

    Weak spots

    Current and future projects

This is where Grath Mirehooves holds council, works out contracts, and brand-slaps the herd into shape when big decisions are needed.

    Offices / Alcoves:

    Nearby structures house:

    Planning spaces for Work-Masters

    Kell’s ledgers and drone rosters

Storage of critical survey tools and reference logs

It’s not fancy. It’s just the driest, safest place to think.

    Hearths & Social Spaces

Even in a swamp, they need fire and pause.

    Family Hearths:

Located in longhouses of the outer stilt-town

    Used for:

    Shared meals

    Drying clothes and gear

Swapping stories about bad weather and worse jobs

    Work Hearths:

Small, sheltered fire spots near work yards and docks

    Used to:

    Warm hands

    Heat tools or food

Discuss shifts, near-misses, and what almost went wrong

    Patron’s Hearth:

A central, slightly sunken hearth in the Mud-Patron Hall

    Only fully lit on:

    Flood anniversaries

    Major completion feasts

    Times of serious crisis

When you’re invited to sit near that fire, you’re being treated as someone who has earned a say—or is dangerous enough that they want you close.

    Infrastructure & Engineering

The compound itself is a proof of concept: that Mirehooves knows how to hold back death by water.

    Key elements:

    Levees and Embankments:

Curving earth-and-stone ridges around key ground, constantly maintained.

Failure in one section means a very bad day for everyone.

    Sluice Gates & Channels:

Controlled cuts in levees to let water in and out on purpose.

Heavy wooden or metal gates controlled by teams of workers and drones.

    Watch-Posts:

Elevated platforms along the perimeter and near critical crossings.

    Used for:

Spotting floods, fires, or enemy movements

Signaling with flags, bells, or horns

The compound is basically one huge workshop testing what can and can’t be forced to stand in a swamp.

    Security & Control

Security here doesn’t look like Ashenmantle’s polished patrols. It looks like:

Guards who know exactly where solid ground ends

    Drones standing at chokepoints on:

    narrow walkways

    channel crossings

    levee tops

    Tactics:

Intruders are not usually chased far—just corralled toward bad ground or narrow paths where drones and locals hold the advantage.

People who cause too much trouble in the compound simply don’t make it back to their boat.

Paper law matters less here. Position, strength, and who owes who what matter more.

    Atmosphere & Impressions

To someone walking into Mirehooves’ compound for the first time:

    The ground feels untrustworthy.

The air is heavy with moisture, insects, and the smell of old water.

Drones move in groups, hauling loads or standing motionless at the edges of flooded paths.

Free Lantexi look busy, tired, and entirely uninterested in outsiders’ comfort.

Nothing is pretty. Everything has a reason to exist.

You leave with the impression that:

If you’re useful and tough, they’ll work you to the bone.

If you’re weak and loud, they’ll ignore you at best.

If you’re strong, alone, and unprotected… someone is probably already weighing you as future drone material.

20. #20Herd Dawnveil

    Keys: Dawnveil, Herd Dawnveil

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Herd Dawnveil is the “reformist” Lantexi herd—at least, that’s how they sell themselves. They’re the ones trying to move away from open, casual droning while still living in a culture that treats drones as normal infrastructure.

    They present as:

    Enlightened

    Future-focused

    Ethically improved

Underneath that? Same old tools, just wrapped in softer language and thinner excuses.

    Symbol, Colors & Territory

Colors: Pale blue and soft cream

Symbol: A rising sun partially obscured by a stylized wool veil

    Territory:

Built on higher, drier ridges and stepped terraces

Open courtyards, light wells, and airy walkways

Fewer walls, more railings and overlooks—everything meant to look bright and transparent

Compared to Ashenmantle’s stone fortress and Mirehooves’ swamp maze, Dawnveil territory feels open, breathable, and less oppressive at first glance. That’s intentional.

    Herd Character

Dawnveil see themselves as the next phase of Lantexi society:

    Less brutal

    More diplomatic

More concerned with image beyond fear

    They value:

    Debate and councils

    Public justification of decisions

Clean streets, visible order, and “balanced” law

They don’t want to destroy the structure. They want to soften its edges and prove Lantexi can be “civilized” without being as terrifying.

Key difference: They care deeply what outsiders think. That alone makes them stand out.

Droning Doctrine – Official vs Reality

    Official Stance:

Dawnveil’s law and public messaging are clear:

Droning is a last resort, used only when:

    A severe crime is proven

A threat is immediate and cannot be neutralized another way

    All non-lethal options have failed

Debt-based droning and “random selection” are explicitly outlawed on paper.

They like to recite phrases like:

“No shell without proof.” “Droning binds only those who break the dawn.”

    Actual Practice:

Reality doesn’t fully match the rhetoric:

Old habits remain among elders, enforcers, and traditionalist lines.

The herd drones fewer people than others, but:

    Some street-level disappearances still happen

Justifications get stretched when resources are tight or security feels threatened

“Threat to stability” becomes a catch-all excuse when they need a body and don’t want a trial

The difference is degree, not absolute morality:

Where Mirehooves roughly grabs someone and shrugs,

Dawnveil quietly files extra paperwork, renames the offense, and calls it “regrettable but necessary.”

They are better. Not good. Just comparatively less ugly.

    Drones in Dawnveil

    Appearance:

    Dawnveil prefers drones that look:

    Clean, smooth, and minimally intimidating

Shell colors: pale cream, soft grey, or muted sky-blue accents

Latex wool shaped into simple, flowing veils rather than aggressive ridges or spikes

They don’t want their drones to look like horror pieces. They want them to look like necessary tools, almost calm.

    Roles:

Gate and hall sentries—placed where they’re visible, but posed non-aggressively

Labor in infrastructure, but usually not in public-facing “ugly” jobs

Ceremony escorts and silent guards during negotiations and religious events

They rarely put drones into deliberately terrifying displays. Public fear doesn’t fit their brand.

Culture & Everyday Life (Dawnveil Flavor)

    Atmosphere:

More conversation, less constant threat in the air.

    Street life has:

    Open markets

    Visible music and craft demonstrations

Less obvious drone presence than other herds

They’re not peaceful. Just quieter about the sharp edges.

    Education & Ideology:

    Young Dawnveil are taught:

Lantexi history as a line of “necessary harshness” evolving toward “responsible stewardship.”

That other herds cling to old brutality; Dawnveil is “proof that we can be better.”

That leadership must be answerable to law and council… at least in public.

    Social Rituals:

Debates and public hearings as semi-ritual events.

Storytelling that frames past excesses as regrettable mistakes they’ve “learned from.”

Festivals with dawn-themed motifs—soft light, veils of colored fabric, chimes and soft hoof-rhythm rather than thunderous stomps.

You’ll still feel the hierarchy. They just wrap it in silk.

    Political Position

    Dawnveil plays the role of:

Diplomatic bridge between Lantexi and non-Lantexi powers

Moral shield others can point to:

“Look, see? They’re reasonable now. Some of them, anyway.”

    They leverage that hard:

Offer themselves as the preferred partner for:

    Trade treaties

    Joint security agreements

    Mediations between herds

    To other Lantexi herds:

Reformers in other clans think of Dawnveil as proof that change is possible.

Hardliners call them soft, naïve, or hypocrites who only reform where it’s safe.

    Internal Factions

    Dawnveil is not unified. It’s a tug-of-war.

    1. Reformists

    Genuinely want:

    Strict limits on droning

    Transparent trials

Emphasis on fines, labor terms, and exile over shells

Push for tighter legal definitions of “threat” and “crime” to close the loopholes.

    2. Traditionalists

Think they’ve already given up too much.

    Argue that:

    The world is still dangerous.

Enemy herds and foreign powers will exploit any “softness.”

Keeping droning available as a ready option is survival, not cruelty.

    3. Quiet Cynics

Accept the reformist language but use it to mask old behaviors.

They know which buttons to press in the laws to get the same results with nicer words.

The High Council of Dawnveil is usually a compromise: Just enough reform to look different, not enough to make the system truly safe for outsiders.

    Territory Layout – General

Dawnveil builds to match the brand:

Open courtyards, airy walkways, and split-level terraces.

Light wells carved into denser districts to bring in sun and sky.

Public spaces where anyone can stand and watch proceedings… from a safe distance.

    Their district feels like:

A place that wants to be watched from the outside.

A stage where they can prove how “reasonable” Lantexi can be.

Underneath the open design, though, they still have:

    Discreet holding rooms

    Controlled-access inner chambers

Hidden paths for quietly moving detainees or potential drones

They didn’t dismantle the machine. They just pushed it further from public view.

    Everyday Threat Level

    For herd members:

    Safer than most places.

    You’re more likely to face:

    Fines

    Obligations

    Reassignment than immediate droning.

    For outsiders:

Safer than Ashenmantle or Mirehooves, yes.

    But if you:

    Cross a taboo hard enough

    Threaten the herd’s stability

    Embarrass or endanger leadership

…you can still find yourself labeled a “credible threat” and reassigned to shell duty.

The risk is lower. It’s not zero.

    Dawnveil’s Droning Style

    Practical differences from others:

    Fewer drones per capita.

More formal trials before droning, especially for herd members.

    Better tracking of:

    Who was droned

    Why

    Where they were deployed

They care a lot about documentation. If you push them, you’ll get neat ledgers and carefully-worded justifications explaining why each shell “had to happen.”

Sample Important Roles & Hooks (You Can Expand Later)

You’ll want faces eventually. Here’s a starter set you can flesh out:

    High Dawn-Speaker Serel Veilborn

Public head of Dawnveil, charismatic, good with speeches about “progress.”

Believes in reform—but only as far as it doesn’t break her own power.

    Lawwright Jorin Palehorn

    Architect of Dawnveil’s droning restrictions.

Constantly trying to tighten definitions and close loopholes.

Quietly hated by traditionalists, quietly used by foreign diplomats.

    Ward-Commander Leth “Soft-Step”

Security chief who still thinks droning is the safest ultimate fallback.

Plays nice, smiles a lot, keeps very careful lists of “potential risks.”

    Silent Steward Maera Dawnveil

    Oversees drone records and placement.

Personally believes droning should be nearly extinct… but handles the ones that still happen with clinical efficiency.

You can turn any of these into full entries like you did for Velerra and Grath.

    Narrative Use

Herd Dawnveil is great when you want:

Tension without immediate horror – a place that looks safe, but you find cracks in the mask.

Moral friction – Lantexi who genuinely want to be less monstrous, but still accept the core premise that some people are better as tools.

Political drama – reform vs tradition, treaties under pressure, people trying to fix a system that’s built on domination without collapsing it.

    They’re the herd where:

A PC can believe they’re in the “good” part of Lantexi territory…

…until someone they know ends up in a shell “with full legal justification and deep regret.”

21. #21High Dawn-Speaker Serel Veilborn

    Keys: Serel Veilborn, Serel

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

High Dawn-Speaker Serel Veilborn is the political and ceremonial head of Herd Dawnveil—the herd that prides itself on being “better” than traditional Lantexi power structures. She is:

    The public face of reform

    The first voice outsiders hear

The last signature on “regrettable but necessary” dronings

Serel is what happens when a genuinely idealistic mind grows up inside a machine built on control and decides the best thing to do is sand the blades instead of throwing them away.

    Appearance

Serel is built to look reassuring and composed, not intimidating.

    Build:

Tall, upright stance, but not bulky.

Lean, controlled, with the posture of someone who trains every small movement for effect in public.

    Fur & Skin:

Soft cream fur on face, hands, and lower limbs.

Subtle dappling of pale grey around the eyes and jaw that catches light but doesn’t read as age yet.

    Latex Wool:

Wool forms a smooth, flowing mantle over her shoulders and upper back, like a sculpted cloak.

Color: pale, almost pearly off-white with faint hints of dawn-colored sheen—soft pinks and blues when the light hits right.

Additional curtains of thinner wool hang near her upper arms and flanks, like stylized veils.

    Horns:

Elegant, slightly swept-back horns, not oversized but prominent.

Etched with fine, delicate lines forming arcs and rays like stylized sunbursts.

At the base of each horn is a thin ring inscribed with Dawnveil’s mottos and key treaties.

    Expression:

Calm, attentive, and gently empathetic in public.

Eyes that hold contact just long enough to make you feel heard without feeling judged.

In private, the softness thins; the eyes go colder, measuring risk and fallout.

When she speaks to a crowd, she looks like hope. When she reads a droning ledger alone, she looks like someone doing math she doesn’t want to admit is arithmetic, not ethics.

    Personality

Serel is charismatic, thoughtful, and compromised.

    Temperament:

Steady, rarely flustered in public, quick on her mental feet.

Prefers persuasion over force, but not allergic to force.

Has the patience to listen to long complaints and the spine to cut them off when they turn self-serving.

    Intellect:

Sharp, strategic, very good at reading a room.

Understands the pressures on Dawnveil from other herds and foreign powers.

Knows exactly how far she can push reform before the structure buckles—or she loses her position.

    Values (Stated):

    Transparency, justice, and minimizing harm.

Droning as a last recourse only for clear, proven threats.

Mutual benefit in dealings with outsiders.

    Values (Real):

    Stability over purity.

Control over chaos—just with a cleaner face.

The idea that incremental change is the only realistic path, even if that means living with ongoing injustice.

She does care. That’s what makes her dangerous: she’ll tell you, truthfully, that she wishes things were better while signing documents that keep them bad.

    Role in Herd Dawnveil

    Title: High Dawn-Speaker Function:

    Public Leader & Voice:

Delivers major addresses to the herd.

Hosts foreign envoys and negotiates treaties.

Presides over public hearings and “model trials.”

    Policy Shaper:

Guides the legal framing of droning restrictions and criminal definitions.

Mediates between reformist and traditionalist factions in council.

Chooses which battles to fight and which abuses to quietly ignore “for now.”

    Symbol:

Embodiment of Dawnveil’s brand: “We are better. We are the future.”

Every time another herd says, “We can’t change; it’s impossible,” Dawnveil points at Serel and says, “We already did.”

Her power is broad but not absolute. Push her too far, and the council can hem her in. She knows it.

    Attitude Toward Droning

    Ideally (in her head):

    Droning should be:

    Rare

    Publicly justified

    Carefully supervised

Alternatives (labor terms, exile, binding oaths) should be used wherever possible.

    In Practice:

    She has quietly authorized:

Droning of “high-risk agitators” to prevent wider unrest

Conversion of certain outsiders when leverage, threat, or secrecy demanded it

“Reinterpretation” of old laws to keep options open when someone dangerous but hard to legally pin down needed to disappear

She hates being cornered into those choices. But when cornered, she almost always chooses herd security over individual freedom—then carries the guilt like a badge.

Her favorite lie to herself is:

“I’m keeping the numbers low until we can end this properly.”

She has no believable roadmap for “ending this properly,” but she clings to the idea.

    Relationships & Factions

    Reformists:

See her as their champion, even when she frustrates them by compromising.

She uses them to keep pressure on the council and justify tightening regulations.

She also reins them in when they threaten to split the herd.

    Traditionalists:

Regard her as dangerously soft but undeniably competent.

    Tolerate her reforms because:

They make Dawnveil look good externally.

The core tools (droning, control) still exist.

    Lawwright Jorin Palehorn (if used):

    Legal engineer of her reforms.

She leans on him to close loopholes—but occasionally asks him to leave new ones, quietly, for “safety valves.”

    Ward-Commander Leth “Soft-Step”:

    Security chief; pragmatic, quietly ruthless.

She needs his support to quell threats without open bloodshed.

He sometimes presents her with “fait accompli” situations: people already in chains, risks already framed.

    Non-Lantexi Powers:

See her as the safest Lantexi to work with.

    Some trust her.

The smarter ones trust her motives but not her limits.

    Public vs Private Face

    Public Serel:

    Warm, articulate, hopeful.

Talks about “progress,” “lessons from the past,” and “guarding the dawn of a better era.”

Treats foreign delegates and commoners with equal performative respect.

    Private Serel:

    Tired, sharper-tongued, and less forgiving.

    Admits to close confidants that:

They can’t just stop droning overnight without risking collapse.

Other herds are waiting for Dawnveil to weaken itself.

Some people are too dangerous to leave free, and exile doesn’t always stick.

She does not pretend to herself that her hands are clean—only that they’re less bloody than most, and that this matters.

    Internal Conflict

    Serel’s core problem is simple:

She believes she is doing the least possible harm in a bad system.

She might be right… but it still means she preserves that system.

    Key fractures:

    Moral strain:

Every droning order with a thin justification weighs on her.

She remembers faces and names longer than is healthy for someone in her position.

    Fear of Collapse:

She’s genuinely convinced that if Dawnveil goes too far, too fast, there will be:

    Internal revolt

    External predation

Or a split that creates a more brutal breakaway herd

    Ego and Identity:

She needs to believe she’s the one holding the line between cruelty and chaos.

That belief makes it hard for her to step aside or imagine someone else doing better.

    Strengths

    Political Skill:

Can read a council room and give each faction just enough to keep them engaged.

Speaks outsider languages (literally or culturally) fluently enough to reassure foreign powers.

    Real Reform:

Has genuinely reduced droning frequency compared to other herds.

    Instituted:

Public review procedures for herd-member dronings

Increased use of conditional labor terms

    Stricter tracking and documentation

    Personal Integrity (to a point):

Doesn’t pretend a droning order is “kind.”

Visits certain high-profile cases afterward, as if trying to convince herself it truly was necessary.

    Weaknesses

    Compromise Addiction:

Always trying to find the middle road, even when the situation calls for a hard break.

Will often split reforms into half-measures that everyone hates and no one fully credits.

    Blind Spot to Structural Evil:

She thinks better management and restrictions are enough.

Struggles to accept that some systems can’t be “ethically fine-tuned”—they have to be dismantled.

    Political Vulnerability:

If a major crisis hits and she’s forced to authorize a wave of dronings to “restore order,” her entire reform project can get shredded in one bad year.

    Keys: Jorin Palehorn, Jorin

    Entry settings

    Overview

Lawwright Jorin Palehorn is the chief legal architect of Herd Dawnveil. He’s the one who actually writes the reforms Serel Veilborn talks about. Every limit on droning, every tightened definition of “threat,” every legal safeguard that exists in Dawnveil’s system? His handwriting is on it somewhere.

He is a reformer, but the technical kind: the one digging through old law to close loopholes and chain down the worst impulses, while knowing the core machine still runs.

    Appearance

Jorin looks like someone who spends more time with documents and arguments than with drills or patrols—but you can tell he wasn’t always a desk-herd.

    Build:

Medium height, sturdy but not bulky.

Shoulders slightly hunched from long hours over tables and slates.

Moves carefully, as if always aware of where his hooves fall—habit from years of political minefields.

    Fur & Skin:

Pale grey fur on face and hands, with a slightly washed-out look that gave him his nickname.

Darker shading around the eyes, like permanent tiredness rather than age.

    Latex Wool:

Mantle of wool over his shoulders and upper back, kept modest and neat.

Color: soft cream-grey, polished just enough to show he cares about presentation, but never flashy.

Additional shorter bands around forearms, often lightly smudged with ink or wax.

    Horns:

Slim, backward-curving horns with delicate etched lines that follow geometric paths and branching patterns—his “thought maps” turned symbolic.

Paler than average—almost bone-white compared to his fur—another source for the “Palehorn” epithet.

    Expression:

    Thoughtful, slightly strained.

Eyes that flick instinctively to written text, inscriptions, or signage.

When listening, his gaze narrows slightly, like he’s already rewriting what he hears into cleaner language.

He often has writing tools tucked into a belt or harness and thin stacks of slates or folded documents at hand.

    Personality

Jorin is precise, stubborn, and quietly intense.

    Temperament:

    Not loud, but firm.

Rarely snaps; instead he digs in and refuses to yield on points that matter.

Can be dryly sarcastic when someone waves away “technicalities”—those technicalities are his entire battleground.

    Mindset:

Sees laws as machines: if you don’t build them right, they don’t do what you think.

Takes every wording seriously; a single vague phrase is, to him, an open wound.

Treats precedent like terrain—mapped, cataloged, and used carefully.

    Values:

    Clarity over comfort.

    Consistency over convenience.

    Actual limits over feel-good proclamations.

He is not idealistic in the airy sense. He’s the kind of idealist who believes that exact wording is the only shield anyone really has between them and abuse.

    Role in Herd Dawnveil

    Title: Lawwright of Dawnveil

    Core Duties:

Drafts and revises Dawnveil law, especially around:

    Droning criteria

    Criminal definitions

    Due process requirements

Rights and obligations of herd members and recognized guests

Reviews proposed decrees from Serel and the council:

    Flags dangerous vagueness

Identifies hidden loopholes, intentional or not

Suggests language that tightens or narrows application

    Oversees:

    Case law archives

Interpretive guides used by judges, arbiters, and security officials

When Dawnveil claims, “Our law is different,” Jorin Palehorn is the one who actually made that true—at least on paper.

    Legal Philosophy

Jorin’s core beliefs are simple and brutal:

Vague law is a weapon in the wrong hands.

Clear law is the only defense the weak have.

    On droning specifically:

    It must be:

    Legally defined

    Narrowly applicable

    Tied to specific, demonstrable criteria

    He has pushed for:

Removing “suspicious behavior” as a free-standing justification.

    Replacing it with defined categories:

    “Documented violent action”

    “Attempted organized sabotage”

“Repeated breach of binding oaths under reviewed conditions”

He knows this won’t stop every abuse. But it forces abusers to work harder and leaves more proof behind.

    To him, that matters.

    Relationship with Droning Reality

    Jorin is not blind:

He knows some Dawnveil officials still twist definitions.

    He’s seen cases where:

Charges were stacked just to fit the legal path to droning.

    Reviews were rushed or manipulated.

    He responds by:

    Writing tighter language.

Building review structures that require multiple sign-offs.

Creating paper trails that, if someone ever has the courage, could be used to prosecute the abusers later.

He doesn’t have the power to stop every bad droning. But he can leave hooks in the law for someone braver—or more desperate—down the line.

    Relationships

    High Dawn-Speaker Serel Veilborn:

Allies, but not always in sync.

She sells the reforms to the public; he makes them structurally sound.

She sometimes asks for softer language for flexibility; he pushes back hard when he thinks it will reopen abuses.

They argue, but both know they need each other.

    Traditionalists in the Council:

    Many resent him openly.

    They see his work as:

    “Overcomplicating” justice

    “Binding leadership’s hooves”

Some try to bypass his office entirely, getting orders pushed through by emergency procedures.

Security Heads (like Leth “Soft-Step,” if used):

They see him as the one who makes their jobs harder.

He sees them as the first ones who’ll abuse vague language if he lets them.

He’ll work with them… but he doesn’t trust them.

    Archivists & Scribes:

Treat him with quiet respect and mild fear.

He depends on them to keep case history accurate; they depend on him to keep their work meaningful.

    Methods & Habits

    Jorin spends his days:

    Reviewing old rulings for patterns:

    When did droning spike?

What phrases were used as catch-alls?

Drafting new clauses that close those holes.

    Meeting with:

    Victim families

    Advocates

Reformist councilors to gather edge-case stories that show where the law still fails.

    He writes:

    In layers:

    A main, clear text.

    Commentary explaining intent.

Internal notes pointing out how it can be subverted if someone is determined—and how to catch it.

    He keeps private logs of:

Laws he was forced to dilute.

Cases where his stricter language was overridden.

Names of officials who repeatedly push for “flexibility.”

He’s playing a long game. Quietly.

    Personality in Interaction

    With regular herd members:

    Patient, if they’re honest.

Explains law in plain terms when asked.

Treats them as people law is supposed to protect, not just subject to it.

    With officials:

    Polite, but sharp.

    Calls out sloppy thinking.

Refuses to sign off on language he considers dangerous, unless he’s overruled by formal vote or emergency edict.

    With outsiders:

    Cautious but willing to talk.

If they challenge Dawnveil on its laws, he can explain what’s actually different—and where it still fails.

Doesn’t lie well; his face gives away when something is worse than he wants to admit.

    Weaknesses & Limits

    Bound to the System:

Jorin can’t imagine just discarding the core structure.

His entire approach assumes the machine stays; he just makes it safer.

    Legal Tunnel Vision:

He overestimates what clean language can fix.

Underestimates raw power politics and people who don’t care about the written rule.

    Personal Risk:

    He’s made enemies.

If Dawnveil ever swings hard back toward authoritarianism, he’ll be one of the first they silence—officially or otherwise.

23. #23Ward-Commander Leth “Soft-Step”

    Keys: Soft-Step, Leth

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Ward-Commander Leth “Soft-Step” is Herd Dawnveil’s chief of security and internal order. If Serel Veilborn is the hopeful face of reform and Jorin Palehorn is the wording, Leth is the one who makes sure nothing gets out of hand—quietly, efficiently, and with as little public mess as possible.

He’s not the loud enforcer type. He’s the one you never heard coming.

    Appearance

Leth looks like someone who could vanish into a corridor even in plain sight.

    Build:

    Medium height, lean, and controlled.

Musculature is wiry rather than heavy—built for endurance and quiet movement, not brute ramming.

    Fur & Skin:

Pale tan fur on face and hands, with slightly darker shading around eyes and muzzle.

Short, well-kept; nothing wild or ragged.

    Latex Wool:

Mantle is shorter and closer-fitting than most Dawnveil officials.

Color: soft cream with faint blue-grey undertones—muted enough that he doesn’t stand out in the pale-stone corridors.

The wool around his neck and upper shoulders is smoothed and flattened, not flowing; nothing for fingers or weapons to easily grab.

    Horns:

Slim, back-curved horns with minimal visible etching.

The few marks present are functional: rank indicators and simple warding designs, not elaborate symbolism.

    Expression:

    Calm, mild, watchful.

Has a habit of half-smiling with his mouth while his eyes stay completely flat.

Looks like he’s listening even when he’s several steps ahead of the conversation.

His clothing/gear (if your setting uses it) tends to be understated: fitted belts, light armor or reinforced cloth, nothing jangly or bright.

    Personality

Leth is polite, controlled, and fundamentally dangerous.

    Temperament:

    Rarely raises his voice.

Speaks in steady, smooth tones, even when delivering threats.

Almost never shows open anger; when he does, things have already gone very wrong.

    Mindset:

Treats security as a matter of patterns and pressure points rather than brute force.

    Prefers to neutralize trouble:

    Before it becomes public

    Before it becomes heroic

    Before it becomes loud

    Values:

    Stability over freedom.

    Prevention over reaction.

    Clean solutions over dramatic ones.

He is not a zealot. He’s a professional. That’s worse in some ways—he doesn’t have to believe he’s morally right; he only has to believe he’s necessary.

    Role in Herd Dawnveil

    Title: Ward-Commander of Dawnveil

    Core Duties:

    Oversees:

City watch forces, patrols, and gate security

    Internal investigation units

Drone guards deployed for security purposes (as opposed to labor)

Advises the High Council and Serel on:

    Threat assessments

    Dissent within the herd

Risks posed by outsiders, visitors, or new policies

    Implements:

    Crowd control strategies

    Quiet arrests and relocations

Containment of unrest before it reaches public squares

If something potentially destabilizing is happening inside Dawnveil, Leth either already knows or is a step away from knowing.

    Attitude Toward Droning

Leth’s stance on droning is coldly pragmatic:

He accepts Dawnveil’s restrictions as workable, not ideal.

    He genuinely prefers:

    Surveillance

    Pressure

    Legal penalties

    Discreet exile

…over immediate droning when he thinks those can actually control the situation.

But when he decides someone is:

    A persistent destabilizing force

At risk of becoming a symbol for resistance

    Unmanageable by softer means

…he will move them into the “credible threat” category and start building a case for droning.

He doesn’t enjoy it. He just doesn’t flinch from it.

To him, droning is the “last lock on the door.” He’d rather not use it, but he will, and he’ll sleep fine afterward.

    Methods & Tactics

Leth runs security like a low-level, constant diagnosis:

    Information Web:

    Informants embedded in:

    Markets

    Worker groups

    Hearth circles

    Guards trained to log:

    Repeated troublemakers

    Pattern anomalies

Any gathering that keeps changing location for no clear reason

    Soft Interventions:

    Quiet warnings

    Extra patrols “coincidentally” near hotspots

Subtle pressure: inspections, citing minor violations, travel delays

    Escalation Steps:

    Watch

    Nudge

    Isolate

    Discredit or displace

If all else fails: petition for severe action (including droning)

He rarely jumps straight from “problem” to “shell.” He prefers to tighten screws slowly until most people break or back down without forcing dramatic scenes.

    Relationship with Serel & Jorin

    With High Dawn-Speaker Serel Veilborn:

    Publicly loyal, privately frank.

He respects her goals but keeps reminding her:

The herd is not as enlightened as she wants it to be.

Enemies outside and inside are waiting for any show of weakness.

Sometimes presents her with “we’re already past soft options” situations:

    Dossiers already compiled

    Lower-level solutions already failed

He gives her a choice, but a loaded one.

    With Lawwright Jorin Palehorn:

    Mutual irritation and reluctant reliance.

Jorin’s tight laws force Leth to work harder to justify severe measures.

Leth’s reports highlight where Jorin’s language still leaves dangerous gaps.

    Leth will push for:

    Emergency clauses

    Exceptions in crisis

    Broad interpretations of “threat”

Jorin tries to nail those definitions down; Leth probes the edges.

    Relationship with Drones

    Leth sees drones as:

Security appliances—reliable, visible, and intimidating when needed.

    Tools that:

    Don’t argue

    Don’t take bribes

    Don’t panic in a crowd

    He uses them for:

Fixed posts at key entrances and choke points

Silent presence in council chambers or hearing halls

    Sudden shows of force:

A line of motionless drones appearing at the edge of a gathering is often enough to shut it down.

He doesn’t meddle with the droning process itself. He just requests bodies with the right profiles:

    Strong enough to defend

    Intimidating enough to deter

Ideally non-local, or at least not tied to inflaming a specific neighborhood if recognized

    Public vs Private Leth

    Public:

    Calm, agreeable, measured.

    Speaks reassuringly:

“We are simply ensuring everyone’s safety.”

    “Dawnveil’s law protects us all.”

Seen as a dependable, rational commander who avoids unnecessary bloodshed.

    Private:

Keeps his own running ledger of:

    Possible uprisings

    Problem families or lines

Officials whose appetites for control worry even him

Discusses worst-case scenarios with a cold, almost academic tone:

How many people would need to be removed to defuse a given movement.

Which neighborhoods would riot if pushed, and which would stay quiet.

He doesn’t enjoy crushing people, but he’s willing to plan for it carefully.

    Strengths

    Situational Awareness:

Excellent at reading tension in a crowd or building.

Spots bad combinations of people and places before they ignite.

    Restraint:

    Not trigger-happy.

Understands that overusing force creates martyrs and long-term instability.

    Professionalism:

Keeps his forces trained, disciplined, and less corrupt than most herds’ equivalents.

Knows that if his guards start abusing their power visibly, it undercuts Dawnveil’s carefully polished image.

    Weaknesses

    Control Bias:

Deep down, he trusts managed fear more than he trusts people’s goodwill.

This means he slides toward harsh measures faster than someone truly idealistic would.

    Loyal to the Structure:

As long as Dawnveil exists in roughly its current form, his loyalty is to its stability, not to abstract justice.

If forced to choose between the system and an innocent individual, he’ll choose the system almost every time.

    Quiet Threat:

His low drama and soft-spoken nature make it easy to underestimate how far he’ll go.

When he finally commits to a hard move, it’s usually already too late to stop it cleanly.

    Everyday Behavior

    Day-to-day, Leth:

Reviews patrol reports and incident logs at dawn.

Walks at least one key gate or district each day, not in a flashy entourage, just with a few trusted guards.

    Meets with:

Serel for briefings on politically sensitive tensions

Jorin when new security laws or adjustments are being considered

Local ward-captains to keep them aligned with Dawnveil’s “gentler” presentation

He likes to appear suddenly in places where people didn’t expect to see him—that’s half the point of “Soft-Step.”

24. #24Silent Steward Maera Dawnveil

    Keys: Maera, Maera Dawnveil

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Silent Steward Maera Dawnveil oversees Dawnveil’s drone records, placement, and long-term tracking. If Jorin Palehorn writes the restrictions and Leth “Soft-Step” decides who gets tagged as a threat, Maera is the one who actually turns individuals into entries on a ledger and assignments on a schedule.

She is quietly one of the most dangerous people in Dawnveil, because she has:

A near-complete picture of who was droned

    Where they went

    Why it was supposedly justified

She personally believes droning should be nearly extinct. She still makes sure that the ones that happen are organized, efficient, and never “lost.”

    Appearance

Maera looks like someone who blends easily into orderly spaces: present, precise, rarely loud.

    Build:

Medium height, straight-backed but not imposing.

Movements are economical and deliberate: no wasted gestures, no nervous fidgeting.

    Fur & Skin:

Soft cream fur, a shade darker than Serel’s, with subdued grey around the eyes and jaw that makes her look slightly older than she is.

Hands often carry faint stains from ink, wax, or the mild solvents used on record tablets.

    Latex Wool:

Mantle of wool sits close and smooth around shoulders and upper back, styled to lie like layered fabric rather than big curls.

Color: pale greyish-cream, subtly darker than the walls of Dawnveil’s halls so she doesn’t vanish visually, but doesn’t stand out either.

Smaller bands of wool around forearms, trimmed short to avoid catching on shelves and scroll racks.

    Horns:

Moderately long, gently curving backward and slightly outward.

Etched with thin, straight lines and small hash marks—simple, almost like tally marks or shelf labels.

    Expression:

    Calm, observant, rarely openly emotional.

Eyes that linger just a moment too long when she weighs what you’re saying against what she knows.

Mouth usually set in a neutral line that could turn into kindness or coldness with one small shift.

She dresses (if applicable in your setting) in simple, well-kept layers: nothing ceremonial, nothing flashy, everything designed to move through aisles and archives without snagging.

    Personality

Maera is quiet, disciplined, and deeply conflicted.

    Temperament:

Speaks softly, with measured, clear phrasing.

Rarely interrupts. When she does, it’s because the conversation is about to veer into nonsense.

Not quick to anger—her version of anger is a tightening of tone and an extra layer of chilly precision.

    Mindset:

Thinks in systems and maps: every drone is a point in a web, and she sees how the web shifts.

Values order and truth in records, even when the truth is ugly.

Keeps personal moral judgment mostly to herself, but it’s there and it’s not mild.

    Values:

    Accuracy over convenience.

    Accountability over comforting lies.

    Quiet action over loud promises.

She is not a revolutionary. She’s the person who knows exactly how bad it really is and keeps going, because stopping would mean losing even the thin grip she has on the damage.

    Role in Herd Dawnveil

    Title: Silent Steward of Dawnveil

“Silent” isn’t about her never speaking. It’s about the way she works unseen, making sure the system’s guts run cleanly while public speeches happen somewhere else.

    Core Responsibilities:

    Maintains the master ledger of:

All current drones under Dawnveil authority

Their original status (herd member, outsider, criminal, “threat”)

Justification codes tying them to specific rulings and laws

    Assigned functions and current locations

    Coordinates with:

Security (Leth) for drone guard deployments

Civic planners for using drones in infrastructure and public works

Any drone-handling specialists for maintenance and control checks

    Audits:

Whether drones are where they are supposed to be

Whether any are being used “off-book”

Whether certain justification patterns are appearing too often

In short: if a drone “doesn’t appear in Maera’s records,” it effectively doesn’t exist in Dawnveil’s system—and that is not supposed to happen.

    Attitude Toward Droning

    Maera’s position is:

    Droning should be nearly extinct.

As long as it exists, it must be tracked without mercy.

    She believes:

If drones are going to be used at all, there must be:

    No “quiet” disappearances

    No unrecorded conversions

No gaps in the chain from person → ruling → shell → assignment

She doesn’t have the authority to stop droning. She does have the power to make it:

Impossible to pretend it’s not happening

Possible to prove exactly how it was abused later

That is her version of resistance: she refuses to let this vanish into the fog.

    Relationships

    High Dawn-Speaker Serel Veilborn:

Respects Serel’s intent but trusts her optimism less than Serel would like.

    Provides honest reports on:

    Droning frequency

    Justification distributions

Where law and practice are drifting apart

Maera is the one who can quietly say:

“We are droning less, yes. But more of these are being justified as ‘threats to stability’ than before. That drift is not accidental.”

    Lawwright Jorin Palehorn:

    Strong professional alignment.

Jorin designs the legal constraints; Maera tests them against reality.

    She sends him:

Patterns that suggest loopholes being exploited

Cases that follow the letter of the law but clearly violate its spirit

Jorin relies heavily on her data when arguing for tighter wording.

    Ward-Commander Leth “Soft-Step”:

    Functional, tense relationship.

Leth sees her as the one who keeps everything cataloged; he needs her to justify severe measures.

She sees which names keep showing up in his “credible threat” category.

If she quietly decides he’s drifting toward abuse, she doesn’t confront him—she starts flagging and cross-referencing.

    Other Officials & Elders:

    Some find her unnerving.

She rarely argues out loud, but her ledgers have a way of destroying comfortable narratives when someone looks too closely.

    Methods & Work Style

    Day to day, Maera:

Receives new droning orders, rulings, and case files.

    Ensures:

Each has a complete paperwork chain: accusation → process → outcome

Each is tagged correctly in the ledger with:

    Offense class

    Risk category

    Approval signatures

    Assigns:

Drones to specific roles based on function, control stability, and prior placement.

    She tries—quietly—to keep:

Recently converted herd members away from highly public posts

Particularly unjust cases away from places they’d be recognized and spark questions

    Conducts periodic audits:

Compares official drone rosters to actual on-the-ground counts.

Investigates discrepancies: a missing unit, a shell reassigned without record, a drone replaced in a post with no paperwork.

    She keeps private notes on:

Dronings that “feel wrong” even if they’re technically justified.

Officials whose signatures appear too often on thinly justified cases.

Families or neighborhoods that are supplying more drones than their share of trouble should warrant.

She doesn’t move on those notes yet. But they’re there.

    Public vs Private Maera

    Public:

    A quiet, efficient administrator.

    Answers questions calmly.

Provides numbers and trends when asked in formal sessions.

Looks like the model of the “new Dawnveil”: humane, precise, professional.

    Private:

Remembers specific names and faces far too well.

Sometimes walks past posted drones she knows the original identity of, lingers half a heartbeat too long, then moves on.

Has deliberate, rigid routines so she doesn’t think too hard about what those numbers actually mean.

Her “silent” nature is partly discipline and partly self-defense.

    Strengths

    Comprehensive View:

She sees the entire drone layer of Dawnveil: every unit, every justification.

No one else has that full picture.

    Cold Accuracy:

    Her records are brutally honest.

That makes them incredibly dangerous to anyone trying to lie about how “rare” abuse really is.

    Operational Competence:

Keeps drones where they need to be for Dawnveil’s functions to work.

Prevents the kind of chaotic misplacement that would force the herd to choose between losing control or escalating dronings.

    Weaknesses & Pressure Points

    Non-Confrontational:

    She hates direct political conflict.

Prefers to work through data, subtle pressure, and quiet questions.

    Guilt Accumulation:

Her memory and conscience don’t shut off just because her job needs them to.

This builds a slow internal strain—perfect ground for future cracks.

Too Valuable to Be Ignored, Too Dangerous to Be Free:

Her role makes her nearly untouchable in normal times—Dawnveil needs her accuracy.

In a hard turn toward authoritarianism, she’d be one of the first either:

    Coerced into falsifying records, or

Removed and replaced with someone more obedient.

    Overview

The Dawnveil compound is a terraced, light-filled stronghold built to look open, humane, and transparent while still hiding the same hard control beneath the surface.

Where Ashenmantle is a fortress and Mirehooves is a work-yard in a swamp, Dawnveil is a stage:

    Wide sightlines

    Bright courtyards

Hallways that invite you to look around

Carefully hidden back-routes where the ugly work moves out of sight

It’s built to convince outsiders—and wavering Lantexi—that reform is real.

    Location & Setting

The compound is built on stacked ridges and cut terraces above the surrounding districts:

Natural slopes carved into broad steps of stone and packed earth

Retaining walls faced with pale stone that catches morning light

Open views over the city and far horizon, especially at dawn

From below, it looks like layers of white and cream stone rising in gentle steps, more like a temple complex than a fortress.

Wind and light reach almost every surface. That’s intentional.

    Overall Layout

Think of the compound as a stepped fan facing outward:

Outer Terraces – Public Face & Approach

Civic Quarter – Courts, Forums, and Offices

Inner Council Ring – High Hall and Council Chambers

Back Veils – Holding, Processing, and Drone Infrastructure

Archives & Steward Wing – Where the Truth Lives on Paper

Everything the herd wants you to see is along the central axis and broad courts. Everything they’d rather you didn’t think about sits one layer behind, or just below.

Outer Terraces – Approach & Public Spaces

The outermost level is where anyone can come without causing alarm.

    Features:

Broad, shallow stairs leading up from surrounding streets onto open terraces.

Low walls and railings rather than heavy barricades.

Small trees in planters, benches, and shaded awnings—calculated comfort.

    Public Use:

    Open-air markets during permitted days.

Petitioners waiting to be seen by minor officials.

Public announcements, proclamations, and small demonstrations that the herd is willing to tolerate.

    Security:

Guards dress and act like “helpful guides,” not jailers.

    Drones are present, but:

Posted at the edges of plazas

    Standing in niches along stairways

Kept still and non-threatening unless needed

The message: “You’re safe here. We are watching, but gently.”

Civic Quarter – Courts, Forums & Offices

Past the outer terraces sits the civic heart: where Dawnveil proves it’s more “civilized” than the others.

    Courthalls & Forums:

Tall, airy chambers open to inner courtyards through large archways or screened windows.

Public galleries where citizens can watch proceedings:

    Trials

    Hearings

    Formal disputes

Sound-carrying design: you can hear a voice at the front from the back benches if you listen.

This is where Lawwright Jorin Palehorn’s work actually gets spoken aloud.

    Administrative Offices:

    Offices arranged around smaller courtyards:

    Petition-processing

    Dispute mediation

    Resource allocation

Doors often left open or fitted with latticed panels—symbolic “visible administration.”

    Subtle Controls:

Guard posts and drones placed at junction points, not right in your face.

Certain corridors feel strangely quiet because they lead to more sensitive areas; guards there are polite, but firm, about where you can and can’t go.

Inner Council Ring – High Hall of Dawn

At the highest and most central terrace sits the High Hall, the symbolic and practical center of the compound.

    High Hall of Dawn:

    Large ceremonial chamber with:

Tall windows or open sides along the eastern wall to catch sunrise.

Pale stone floors and pillars, polished but not ostentatious.

Banners in soft cream and pale blue with Dawnveil’s sun-and-veil motif.

    A raised central dais where:

High Dawn-Speaker Serel Veilborn addresses the council and public delegations.

    Major oaths are sworn.

Public “model trials” or review sessions are staged.

    Council Chambers:

    Adjoining rooms used for:

    Closed-door debates

    Faction negotiations (reformists vs traditionalists)

Strategy talks over law and security

These are less open, but still designed to look airy and tasteful. The real privacy comes from layout and sound baffling, not from heavy doors.

Back Veils – Holding, Processing & Drone Infrastructure

Behind and slightly below the showy parts lies the machinery Dawnveil doesn’t brag about.

    Holding Corridors:

Narrower, quieter hallways branching off from civic areas through unremarkable doors.

    Discreet checkpoint stations with:

    More serious guards

Occasional drone presence, kept out of public sight lines

    These lead to:

Short-stay holding rooms for suspects awaiting trial.

Evaluation spaces for people flagged as “potential threats.”

The design is clean and minimal, not dungeon-like, but the effect is the same: once you’re past those doors, you’re no longer in the “open” part of Dawnveil.

    Processing Rooms:

    Administrative chambers where:

    Case files are finalized

    Decisions are recorded

Droning orders are confirmed and passed down

    Architecturally simple:

    Stone walls

    Plain tables

    Hooks for slates and ledgers

These rooms are where Serel’s “last resort” decisions become signatures and codes.

    Drone Maintenance & Prep:

Dawnveil doesn’t like the word “pits,” but they still need somewhere to keep their drones.

Quiet courtyards shielded from public view by:

    High walls

    Decorative latticework

    Layered veils of hanging fabric

    Inside:

Drones stand in neat ranks along walls or under simple awnings.

    Attendants perform:

    Surface maintenance

    Shell inspections

    Response checks

The air is cooler and still. This is not a display ground; it’s a storage and prep zone.

    Archives & Steward Wing

This is Maera Dawnveil’s territory and the real backbone of Dawnveil’s “honesty.”

    Archive Chambers:

Multi-level rooms carved into the interior of the compound, lit by:

    High slit windows

    Light wells

    Carefully placed lamps or crystals

Shelves, cabinets, and compartmented drawers filled with:

    Case files

    Legal precedents

    Drone records

    Council decisions

    The environment is:

    Dry

    Cool

    Quiet

You hear more page-turning and hoof-steps on stone than voices.

    Steward Offices:

    Workrooms where:

    Drone rosters are updated

    Assignments are prepared

    Movement logs are reconciled

This is where Maera ensures there are no “lost” drones on paper, whether anyone likes the truth or not.

Access here is tightly controlled—not with obvious violence, but with layered permissions and a constant sense that everything is being watched and logged.

    Hearth Halls & Social Areas

Even the “humane” herd needs places to eat and pretend they’re normal.

    Common Hearths:

Scattered around the outer terraces and civic level.

Long tables, open fires or heating braziers, and seats for officials, guards, clerks, and visitors.

    Used for:

    Shared meals

    Informal meetings

Storytelling that pushes the Dawnveil narrative of progress and moderation.

    Inner Hearth (Leadership):

Smaller, more private hearth hall near the inner council ring.

    Used by:

    Serel

    Senior councilors

High-ranking officers like Leth and Maera on rare unified occasions

This is where they make themselves feel better about what they’ve done, or steel themselves for what they’re about to authorize.

    Security & Control Patterns

Dawnveil’s security is about being everywhere without looking like it.

    Guards present at:

    Major intersections

    Terraced edge points

    Entry and exit gates

…but dressed and behaving in a way that reads as “civil order,” not “occupation.”

    Drones are:

Kept away from the main public gaze most of the time

    Deployed in:

    Gate posts

    High-visibility but low-confrontation positions

Sudden crowd-control lines when things go bad

    Leth “Soft-Step” uses:

Pattern-based patrol routes that change on rotation, hard to predict from outside.

Informal informants among clerks, attendants, and minor staff who report:

    Repeated petitioners

    Seditious chatter

    Growing cliques with strong opinions

The compound’s shape helps: Plenty of open lines of sight for observation, plenty of discreet side passages for moving people you don’t want seen.

    Atmosphere & First Impressions

To someone visiting the Dawnveil compound for the first time:

It feels lighter, safer, and more reasonable than the other herds’ centers.

    You see:

    Sunlight

    Space

Courtyards with greenery and sitting areas

Courts where people speak in turn and are visibly heard

If you stay long enough and pay attention, you notice:

Certain doors never open for the public.

Some corridors are always guarded, but politely.

Some names whispered by staff cause a slight drop in volume, then a quick subject change.

The compound sells the idea that abuse here is the exception, not the rule. The ledgers in the Steward Wing know better.

    Story Uses

You can use the Dawnveil compound for:

    Political theater:

Public trials and speeches in the High Hall that don’t match what’s happening behind the Veils.

    Investigation & Intrigue:

PCs trying to slip from the bright civic levels into the back halls and archives without attracting Leth’s attention.

    Moral Contrast:

Characters from Mirehooves or Ashenmantle seeing this place and resenting or admiring how pretty Dawnveil has made the same old machine.

    Breaking Point Scenes:

A quiet, “procedural” droning order signed in one of those plain processing rooms, while outside, the compound glows under sunrise banners and sermons about progress.

26. #26Herd Blacktread

    Entry settings

    Overview

Herd Blacktread is the Lantexi herd that treats fear as both policy and culture. Where:

Ashenmantle hides control behind law, and

Dawnveil hides it behind ethics and image,

Blacktread doesn’t hide it at all.

    They rule through:

    Discipline

    Visibility of punishment

The certainty that if you defy them, everyone will see what happens to you

They’re the herd other herds quietly invoke when they want someone scared into cooperation.

    Symbol, Colors & Territory

    Colors:

    Deep black

    Iron-grey

    Blood-red accents

Symbol: A single cloven hoofprint pressed deep into cracked stone, often ringed with impact lines.

    Territory:

    Rocky uplands, badlands, broken plateaus

Fortified cliff-top strongholds and bastions linked by hardened marching roads

Sparse vegetation, windswept stone, dust, and exposed rock

Their homeland looks like it was built for drills and marching, not comfort.

    Herd Character

Blacktread defines itself with three words: Strength, Discipline, Consequence.

    They believe:

    Weak herds die.

Soft leadership invites invasion or revolt.

    Fear properly applied prevents both.

    They respect:

    Obedience under pressure

    Endurance through hardship

    Results, even when they’re ugly

Whining, hesitation, and open defiance are treated as structural faults, not personality quirks.

    Leadership & Key Figures

    Blacktread isn’t a council-heavy herd. It’s a command spine with a few dangerous vertebrae.

    Iron-Patron Draega Blacktread

Role: Supreme leader of Herd Blacktread.

Profile: Massive, plate-woolled, horns scarred with campaign marks. Draega embodies Blacktread thinking: survival through unapologetic brutality.

    Doctrine:

    No excuses, only outcomes.

    Droning as punishment and message.

Anyone who makes the herd look weak becomes an example.

If Draega orders it, it happens. If she looks disappointed, someone is going to the shell or the grave.

    March-Lord Torvek Stonepath

Role: Commander of road chains, marching columns, and external projection.

Profile: Tall, lean, all sharp lines and forward motion. Treats roads like veins of influence.

    Function:

Plans punitive marches and demonstrations of force.

Uses drones as vanguard shock units and visible terror tools.

Always leaves enough survivors to carry stories ahead of him.

When Blacktread “visits” a region, Torvek is usually the one leading the column.

    Discipline-Master Yara Chainvoice

Role: Internal discipline head; drills, punishments, and morale by fear.

Profile: Compact, heavily plated wool, horns banded with metal. Voice that can cut across a drill yard effortlessly.

    Function:

Oversees training, discipline courts, and public punishments.

Drones cowards, deserters, and officers who break at critical moments.

Uses shells as permanent reminders in training fields and barracks.

Every rank-and-file Blacktread is more afraid of Yara’s disappointment than of enemy weapons.

    Drone-Commander Brann Ironmask

Role: Tactical and symbolic commander of drone formations.

Profile: Broad-chested, horn-scarred, often wearing a half-mask of dark metal in formal situations.

    Function:

Designs drone formations for shock, suppression, and spectacle.

Decides where to place drones for maximum psychological impact.

Balances “don’t waste assets” against “make sure they never forget this.”

If drones are deployed in a way that terrifies people just by existing, Brann probably planned it.

    Oath-Scribe Velka Bloodmark

Role: Keeper of oaths, surrender terms, and punitive decrees.

Profile: Smaller-framed, pale-horned, wool braided and tied with dull-red cords for each major oath sealed.

    Function:

Writes surrender conditions and loyalty oaths for conquered or “protected” communities.

Frames droning as the “earned consequence” for oath-breaking.

Ensures every punishment can be justified as “you agreed to this.”

Velka gives Blacktread the fig leaf of “honor-bound” cruelty. You broke the terms she wrote? That’s all the excuse they need.

    Droning Doctrine

    Official Line:

On paper, droning is reserved for:

    Traitors and deserters

    “Enemies of the herd’s survival”

Hostile raiders and those who shelter them

    Severe oath-breakers under Velka’s terms

They claim it’s penal service for those who failed Blacktread’s standards.

    Reality:

    Droning is:

    Punishment

    Deterrent

    Resource channel

    They use it for:

    Cowards who run in battle

Officers who freeze or disobey in critical moments

Conquered foes who will not submit fully

Civilians who become symbols of defiance

And they rarely keep it quiet. Turning someone into a drone is a performance:

    Charges read aloud

Sentencing witnessed by ranks or local civilians

New drone marched through the same spaces they “failed” in

The key distinction from other herds: they don’t pretend this is tragic. They insist it’s necessary—and useful.

    Blacktread Drones

    Appearance:

    Designed to intimidate, not reassure.

    Shell Colors:

    Matte black

    Dark iron-grey

    Blood-red striping or sigils

    Latex Wool:

Thick, plate-like masses over shoulders and chest—almost armor-like.

Heavy collars and ridges down the spine.

Sometimes reinforced visually with carved “impact lines” or angular patterns.

    Posture:

    Feet set wide, shoulders squared.

Heads angled so you mostly see the blank face, not above it.

When in formation, they look more like a movable wall than individuals.

    Roles:

Shock infantry in punitive raids and “demonstration” marches

Gate and checkpoint enforcers at major entries

Crowd-control lines in rebellious or resentful districts

Static symbolism—standing guard in squares, drill yards, and execution plazas

Blacktread wants people to see their drones and remember exactly what they represent.

    Culture & Everyday Life

    Atmosphere:

In Blacktread territory, everything feels like a garrison or forward base:

    Yards for drills

    Roads for marching

Hearths that double as debrief points between deployments

    Daily Life:

Drills at dawn for those in or near military roles.

Regular inspections, route marches, and weapon practice.

Work crews reinforcing roads, fortifications, watch-towers.

    Social Norms:

    Strength and endurance earn status.

Complaints are expected to come with solutions, not whining.

Open dissent is treated as a test of will—one the herd intends to win.

    Hearth stories are about:

    Campaigns survived

    Punishments delivered

Times they were outnumbered but still held ground because nobody broke.

    External Relations

    Reputation:

Blacktread is the boogeyman other herds name when negotiations sour.

“If you don’t take this deal with us, they might call Blacktread instead.”

“We’re being reasonable. They wouldn’t be.”

    To outsiders:

    Pros:

Incredibly effective at crushing banditry, insurgency, and open rebellion.

Highly reliable once they sign a contract; they don’t flake out.

    Cons:

    Draconian methods.

Dronings and terror tactics that leave long-term resentment.

“We fixed your problem” sometimes looks like “We turned half your troublemakers into shells and scared the rest into submission.”

    Other herds use Blacktread:

As muscle when they want plausible deniability.

As a threat so they can look gentler by comparison.

    Internal Structure

Beneath Draega, authority cascades down the chain.

Iron-Patron Draega Blacktread – overall strategic control, doctrine, high-level punishments and campaigns.

March-Lords (like Torvek Stonepath) – regional operational commanders, manage fort chains and active columns.

Discipline-Masters (Yara Chainvoice) – internal control, drills, punishments, morale enforcement.

Drone-Commanders (Brann Ironmask) – specialized oversight of drone deployment in formation, terror, and labor roles.

Oath-Scribes (Velka Bloodmark) – harness language and ritual to lock conquered or subordinate groups into obedience.

It’s a clean chain: orders run down, consequences run back up.

    Blacktread Strongholds (High-Level)

Their main compounds tend to share traits:

Built on high, hard ground—cliffs, ridges, plateaus.

Encircled by stout walls and layered defense lines.

Drill yards large enough to muster troops and drones for displays.

Public punishment or assembly squares where:

    Sentences are read

    Drones are displayed

Discipline is performed in front of gathered ranks

You don’t live in a Blacktread stronghold. You serve in it.

    Everyday Threat Level

    For Blacktread Lantexi:

    Stable if you:

    Obey orders

    Perform your duties

    Don’t break at critical moments

You’re not randomly droned. You are very deliberately droned if you fail in ways the herd considers unforgivable.

    For outsiders:

    High risk if you:

    Resist occupation

    Break signed surrender terms

    Defy or insult command publicly

They don’t pick people at random so much as they pick public examples.

    Narrative Uses

Use Herd Blacktread when you want the unmasked cruelty of Lantexi culture on display.

    Blunt Antagonists:

They walk into negotiations and say out loud what Ashenmantle and Dawnveil politely dance around.

    Terrible Allies:

PCs or NPCs need a threat crushed and call Blacktread for help.

Problem gets solved; collateral damage, dronings, and long-term fear follow.

    Foils for “Reformers”:

Put a Blacktread officer in the same room as Serel Veilborn or Jorin Palehorn.

Let them point out that everyone still uses drones—Blacktread just doesn’t lie about why.

    Living Warning:

A Blacktread column marching toward a region raises stakes immediately.

Characters are suddenly scrambling to solve things before Draega decides to “make an example.”

27. #27Iron-Patron Draega Blacktread

    Keys: Draega, Draega Blacktread

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Iron-Patron Draega Blacktread is the absolute head of Herd Blacktread—the weight at the top of the chain. She is not a council chair or a ceremonial figure; she is a commander whose entire philosophy is simple:

“If they fear us, they don’t test us. If they don’t test us, we live.”

Draega is the one who set Blacktread’s current doctrine of visible discipline, weaponized fear, and unapologetic droning. Every road-fort, drone line, and public “example” in Blacktread territory ultimately traces back to her view that mercy is a luxury other herds can’t afford.

    Appearance

Draega looks exactly like the kind of person you’d pick to represent “do not test this herd.”

    Build:

Broad, heavy, and powerful. Thick shoulders, deep chest, stout neck.

Not the agile type—she’s a walking battering ram that learned to think.

    Fur & Skin:

Dark charcoal-brown fur on exposed areas, sun- and wind-roughened from years in the open.

Scars across arms, ribs, and muzzle from old fights, falls, and shrapnel. She doesn’t hide any of them.

    Latex Wool:

Thick, plate-like masses of wool over her shoulders, upper chest, and back—shaped almost like natural armor.

Color: deep black with a dull, iron-like sheen; not polished glossy, just heavy and solid.

Along her arms and thighs, the wool is shorter and packed, reinforcing joints like layered padding.

    Horns:

Large, heavy horns that curve forward and down before hooking back toward her jaw.

    Deep carved bands mark:

    Major campaigns

    Herd victories

    Internal purges and “correction years”

Some marks are rougher, made in the field with a knife rather than in ceremony—“unofficial” victories.

    Face & Eyes:

Square muzzle, strong jaw, often set in a neutral, unreadable line.

Eyes: dark, steady, not easily roused. When she’s actually angry, they don’t flare—they narrow.

    Bearing:

Stands like she owns every stone in the room.

Moves with slow confidence; no wasted motion, no nervous pacing.

Even sitting, she feels like mass waiting to move.

If Blacktread ever needed to show one person and say “this is us,” it’d be her.

    Personality

Draega is cold, pragmatic, and brutally consistent.

    Temperament:

Speaks rarely and briefly; no taste for speeches.

Doesn’t shout unless there’s a real emergency. Most of the time, a flat “no” or “fix it” is all you get.

Has a long memory and very little patience for repeated failure.

    Mindset:

Sees everything through the lens of herd survival and deterrence.

Believes the world is fundamentally hostile; anything softer than Blacktread’s model is a risk.

Treats fear as a practical tool, not a moral issue.

    Values:

    Discipline over passion.

    Results over intentions.

Reputation over comfort—if people fear Blacktread more than they hate them, that’s a win.

She isn’t cruel for the joy of it. She’s cruel because she believes anything else gets everyone killed.

    Role & Authority

    Title: Iron-Patron of Herd Blacktread

    Her authority is:

    Military:

Final say over campaigns, border actions, punitive marches, and strategic deployments.

    Civil:

Approves high-level discipline doctrines and punishment scales.

Sets the tone for how civilians are treated in Blacktread territory.

    Symbolic:

Living embodiment of “Strength, Discipline, Consequence.”

Her presence alone can calm her ranks or terrify outsiders.

She delegates heavily, but her senior officers all know: if they misread her doctrine or make Blacktread look weak, she will cut them out of the structure without hesitating.

    History & Reputation (Flexible Hook)

You can plug specifics later, but the frame is:

Draega rose out of a period when Blacktread was:

    Fractured by feuding sub-commanders

Losing control of some road chains

Starting to look like just another hardline herd, not the hardline herd

    She unified them by:

Cracking down on internal division—some commanders got executed, others droned.

Staging high-impact punitive campaigns against border raiders and rebellious communities.

Rebuilding Blacktread’s image around predictable, overwhelming response.

Outside Blacktread, her name travels ahead of her forces. Inside Blacktread, her name is a line you don’t cross.

    Attitude Toward Droning

    Draega sees droning as:

Penalty, resource, and message rolled into one.

    Her guiding rules:

    Droning must mean something.

You break in battle, betray the herd, or break an oath? Fine. You serve as a clear warning.

    Droning must be seen.

Conversions for “discipline” are almost never private.

Drones from notable cases are stationed:

    At gates

    In drill yards

In squares where their old associates can’t avoid them

    Droning must not be random.

She despises the idea of totally arbitrary shelling.

Every drone made under her doctrine has a story that can be spoken aloud as justification—even if it’s harsh.

That doesn’t make it kind. It just means if you’re a drone under Draega, someone decided you had to be a warning.

    Relationships with Key Officers

    March-Lord Torvek Stonepath:

Values Torvek’s aggression and speed, but reins him in when he starts burning too hot.

Backs his punitive marches as long as they leave her with more fear than long-term instability.

    Discipline-Master Yara Chainvoice:

Trusts Yara to keep the ranks tight.

Rarely overrules her disciplinary decisions—when she does, everyone notices.

Sees Yara as the “spine” of internal Blacktread life.

    Drone-Commander Brann Ironmask:

Respects his balance between asset management and terror value.

Expects him to keep drone formations effective, not just scary.

Will crack down if he wastes shells for theatrics that don’t pay off strategically.

    Oath-Scribe Velka Bloodmark:

Uses Velka’s oaths as a clean narrative: “We did what we said we’d do if they broke their word.”

Understands the political value of being able to point to written terms and say, “They chose this.”

Draega doesn’t do “favorites.” She has tools. If those tools perform, they stay. If they fail too loudly, they’re removed—sometimes literally.

    Public vs Private Draega

    Public:

    Almost mythic.

    Appears at:

    Major musters

    Oath-ceremonies

    Sentencings that need her presence

    Speaks in short pronouncements:

“You broke. You will stand where others see you.”

“This road is ours. Remember it.”

She doesn’t play to crowds. The crowd plays to her.

    Private:

    More analytical than most realize.

    Reviewing:

    Campaign reports

    Supply issues

    Discipline trends

    Will ask quiet, pointed questions:

“Why did we need so many shells for that?”

“Why did that unit break? Who trained them?”

She’s not fond of excuse-makers. She tolerates blunt bad news more than sugarcoating.

There’s no hidden soft heart here, just a brain that actually thinks about the cost of her doctrine—and accepts it.

    Strengths

    Unshakable Authority:

Her word is final, and she knows how to use that without flailing.

    Strategic Clarity:

Understands when to hit hard and when to merely loom.

    Internal Consistency:

She lives by the same hardness she demands. No secret softness for her own comfort.

    Weaknesses

    Rigidity:

Her worldview leaves very little room for genuine reform or soft power.

In a changing world, that can turn into a serious liability.

    Fear Dependence:

Her whole structure leans heavily on terror.

If someone proves Blacktread can be resisted without immediate annihilation, that mystique starts to crack.

    Limited Patience for Diplomacy:

She’ll accept deals, but she doesn’t enjoy long negotiation games.

Easy for more subtle herds—like Dawnveil—to outmaneuver Blacktread politically while still using them as the “big stick.”

    Interaction with Other Herds

    Ashenmantle:

Sees them as overcomplicated, hiding the same control behind too many ledgers.

Respects their stability but thinks their reliance on “rules” is exploitable.

    Mirehooves:

Understands them. Grimy, practical, doing what’s needed to survive bad terrain.

Might trade labor or security arrangements—mud and stone have shared priorities.

    Dawnveil:

    Thinks they’re deluding themselves.

They still drone people; they just talk more and cry about it.

Will work with them, but has no patience for their moral framing.

Draega’s line, if she ever sat in the same room as Serel, would be something like:

“You shell them quieter. It doesn’t make you cleaner.”

    Entry settings

    Overview

March-Lord Torvek Stonepath is Herd Blacktread’s primary commander of road chains, marching columns, and external projection. If Draega is the weight at the top, Torvek is the hoof that actually hits the ground.

He is the one people mean when they say:

    “Blacktread is on the move.”

When he marches, it isn’t a patrol. It’s a message.

    Appearance

Torvek looks built for forward motion and impact, not subtlety.

    Build:

    Tall, lean, and hard-lined.

Muscle like coiled wire rather than bulk—made for long-distance marches and sudden violence.

    Fur & Skin:

Dark, stone-grey fur with dust-toned highlights along muzzle and limbs from years on the road.

Several pale scars across his forearms and ribs, the kind you get from skirmishes and rock falls rather than clean duels.

    Latex Wool:

Kept tight and layered along shoulders, spine, and thighs—patterned like interlocking plates.

Color: deep, almost asphalt-black with dull matte finish; polished just enough to shed dust, not enough to shine.

Over his chest and upper back, the wool forms a subtle ridge that accentuates his forward-leaning silhouette.

    Horns:

Long, slightly forward-angled horns, less curved than Draega’s, more spear-like.

Carved with route-marks and campaign lines:

Each major march or route seizure etched as a straight or broken path along the horn.

A few are marked with short cross-hatches—representing “demonstration marches” that ended in full punishment.

    Expression:

Eyes always scanning ahead, never fully resting.

Mouth usually set in a thin, unimpressed line; smirks only when someone surprises him with competence or stubbornness.

Even standing still, Torvek looks like he’s about to start walking and expects everyone else to keep up.

    Personality

Torvek is direct, aggressive, and tactically sharp.

    Temperament:

Impatient with delay, ceremony, or drawn-out debate.

Speaks in crisp, tactical assessments; doesn’t waste words.

Treats fear as a natural byproduct of doing his job properly, not a separate goal.

    Mindset:

Thinks in roads, routes, and choke points.

Every settlement, pass, or valley is either:

    A path to control

    A position to break

Or a liability that needs crippling

    Values:

    Fast decisions over dithering.

    Clear orders over clever politicking.

Demonstrations of strength over long arguments.

He respects people who stand their ground more than those who fold quickly—but he’ll still trample either if that’s what the plan calls for.

    Role in Herd Blacktread

Title: March-Lord of the Stonepath Chains

    Responsibilities:

    Commands:

    Major marching columns

    Road-forts and way-stations on Blacktread’s main arteries

Forward garrisons in contested or “unsettled” regions

    Plans and oversees:

    Punitive marches

    Show-of-force parades through unrest-prone territories

Rapid deployments to reinforce allies (or intimidate them)

    Coordinates with:

Drone-Commander Brann Ironmask on using drones in vanguard and intimidation roles.

Discipline-Master Yara Chainvoice on maintaining marching discipline and punishing failures in the field.

Oath-Scribe Velka Bloodmark when drafting surrender terms attached to roads, crossings, and toll points.

In practice, Torvek is the visible face of Blacktread outside their home rocks. When people say, “Blacktread is coming,” they usually mean Torvek’s banners.

    Doctrine & Tactics

Torvek’s marching doctrine is built on a simple chain:

    Arrive fast.

    Arrive hard.

    Leave a mark.

    Operational Style:

    Prefers to seize:

    High ground along a route

Bridges, gates, passes, and river crossings

    Uses drones to:

    Anchor the first impact

Hold narrow points under heavy enemy pressure

Form unbreakable lines in view of civilians and defenders

He rarely wastes time on slow siege tactics unless Draega specifically orders it. His strength is the brutal drive forward, hitting before the enemy fully believes Blacktread is coming.

    Use of Drones

    Torvek treats drones as:

Shock wedges and anchor walls, not background scenery.

    He deploys them:

At the head of marches into hostile or uncertain territory.

In tight wedge formations to smash panic into crowds or enemy lines.

As stationary “black walls” blocking key streets, gates, or escape routes.

He coordinates with Brann, but with clear expectations:

    Drones must:

    Hit first

    Hold longest

    Be seen

He doesn’t like wasting shells, but if burning a few lines of drones secures a region’s submission, he considers that an acceptable expenditure.

    Relationship with Draega Blacktread

    Torvek is Draega’s forward fist.

He understands her doctrine clearly and doesn’t bother watering it down.

When he oversteps, it’s usually by being too fast or too hard, not by hesitating.

Draega keeps him on a relatively long leash, but:

If his marches create more rebellion than fear, she reins him in.

If he loses too many shells for theatrics, she listens to Brann before she listens to Torvek’s excuses.

There’s mutual respect there—two predators who agree on what the hunt looks like.

    Reputation

    Within Blacktread:

Seen as the ideal field commander:

    Clear orders

    Minimal tolerance for incompetence

Doesn’t ask someone to march where he wouldn’t stand himself

    Beyond Blacktread:

    His name is linked to:

Villages that surrendered at the first sight of his banners

Towns that resisted and then had drones stationed at every gate

Roads that used to be bandit-haunts, now quiet but lined with shell-sentries

People hear “Stonepath is on the move” and start making contingency plans—fast.

    Weaknesses & Pressure Points

    Impatience:

Has little tolerance for long political maneuvering.

Can be baited into over-commitment if opponents stall just right.

    Reputation Addiction:

Knows his name is terror capital and leans into it.

Sometimes pushes harder than necessary to avoid looking “soft,” risking long-term resentment.

    Limited Subtlety:

If a situation needs slow infiltration, delicate diplomacy, or careful handling of mixed interests, Torvek is not the ideal tool.

He’s a hammer, and he knows it.

    Everyday Behavior

On campaign or on the march, Torvek:

Walks near the front, not buried in the middle, and definitely not at the rear.

    Inspects:

    Road conditions

    Outrider reports

    Drone readiness

    Keeps a brutally simple rhythm:

    Move, secure, display, move again.

    In garrison:

He prowls road-forts, checks training routines, and drills quick response maneuvers for surprise uprisings or attacks.

Doesn’t sit behind a desk unless forced to; prefers planning while walking the walls or the roads themselves.

29. #29Discipline-Master Yara Chainvoice

    Keys: Yara, Yara Chainvoice

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Discipline-Master Yara Chainvoice is the internal spine of Herd Blacktread—the one who makes sure no one forgets what happens when they slip.

Draega sets doctrine. Torvek marches it out into the world. Yara is the reason the rank and file never, ever relax about standards.

If Blacktread has a conscience, it’s made of stone and sounds like Yara yelling across a drill yard.

    Appearance

Yara looks exactly like someone who spends her life running drills, breaking arrogance, and rebuilding people into something usable.

    Build:

    Compact, dense, powerful.

Shorter than Draega or Torvek but thick through shoulders, chest, and thighs.

Center of gravity low; she looks like you could ram her and still be the one knocked flat.

    Fur & Skin:

Dark brown fur, nearly black in some lighting.

A constellation of old scars along arms, jawline, and collarbone—training accidents, punishments, and “demonstrations” that got physical.

    Latex Wool:

Heavy, plate-like wool along shoulders, upper chest, and back, layered like overlapping armor scales.

Color: deep matte black with faint dull highlights where it’s been scuffed and resealed countless times.

Thicker ridges over spine and hips, making her silhouette broad and looming even when she’s still.

    Horns:

Short, thick horns that curve slightly up and back, built to batter rather than impress.

Wrapped in fitted metal bands engraved with rank marks and discipline symbols—each band representing a major corrective campaign or doctrine reform she’s overseen.

    Expression & Presence:

Eyes sharp, constantly evaluating stance, posture, and attitude.

Resting face is a hard, unimpressed stare; when she smiles, it usually means someone’s about to have a very bad afternoon.

Voice is what earned her “Chainvoice”: a trained bellow that cuts across yards, parade grounds, and echoing stone like a thrown chain. Even at a low tone, her words land with weight.

She doesn’t bother with ornaments beyond what rank requires. Everything on her looks functional.

    Personality

Yara is relentless, unsentimental, and brutally fair—by Blacktread standards, anyway.

    Temperament:

Doesn’t explode at small things; she saves real rage for repeated failures and deliberate defiance.

Most of the time, she’s cold and controlled, delivering cutting assessments in a flat tone.

Anger shows as precision, not volume—when the yelling stops and she gets quiet, that’s when people start sweating.

    Mindset:

Sees the herd as a machine under strain: if discipline slacks, everything breaks.

Treats fear and respect as interchangeable currencies, but prefers respect if she can wring it out of people.

Believes any Lantexi can be hardened if they aren’t allowed to lie to themselves.

    Values:

    Consistency: same infraction, same consequence.

Effort: if you’re breaking yourself to improve, she’ll push you, not crush you.

Honesty: she hates cowards; she despises excuse-makers.

She doesn’t care if you like her. She cares if you hold when it counts.

    Role in Herd Blacktread

    Title: Discipline-Master of Blacktread

    Core Responsibilities:

    Oversees:

Training regimens for troops, officers, and support staff.

Internal discipline courts and punishment scales.

Morale by fear and expectation—not empty speeches.

    Designs and enforces:

Standards for march fitness, formation control, and battlefield conduct.

Behavioral expectations in garrisons and strongholds (curfews, readiness, drill schedules).

The ladder of consequence: from extra drills to lashes to droning.

    Advises Iron-Patron Draega on:

Which units or officers are becoming soft or complacent.

Where discipline failures threaten Blacktread’s reputation.

Who is salvageable and who needs to be removed—or shelled.

If Blacktread stands in formation and doesn’t break, that’s Yara’s work.

    Methods & Discipline Philosophy

Yara treats discipline as a craft:

    Layered Consequence:

    Correction:

Extra drills, extended watch rotations, menial tasks under supervision.

    Punishment:

Public lashings, humiliation drills, forced repetition of failure scenarios.

    Removal or Droning:

Reserved for repeat offenders, cowardice in critical moments, and outright betrayal.

    Public, but Targeted:

She believes punishments must be visible and unmistakable, but not random.

The point is to carve clear lines: “They did this. This happened. Don’t do that.”

    Training Style:

Breaks people down deliberately—but not to nothing.

    Watches closely to see:

Who bends and comes back stronger.

Who cracks and will crack again.

The first group she invests in. The second group she documents for later “use.”

She doesn’t enjoy cruelty for its own sake. She enjoys seeing weakness stripped out and replaced by something that can stand.

    Attitude Toward Droning

Yara’s view on droning is simple and harsh:

It is the final consequence, not the first.

It exists to do three things:

Remove dangerous weakness from the herd.

Provide a lasting tool that still serves.

Visually mark the boundary no one should cross.

    She pushes for droning when:

A soldier breaks and runs in a way that directly endangers others.

An officer defies or undermines orders in critical moments.

A pattern of disobedience proves someone cannot be relied on when the herd is under pressure.

She prefers to do it in front of the ranks:

    Charges read bluntly.

    Sentence delivered without emotional dressing.

New drone marched back through the same yard or route they disgraced.

From her perspective, if you became a shell under her watch, you had a very clear path of warnings first.

    Relationship with Other Leaders

    Iron-Patron Draega Blacktread:

Yara is one of the few who can speak bluntly to Draega without flinching.

Draega trusts Yara’s judgment on internal strength.

When Yara says a unit can’t be relied on, Draega listens.

    March-Lord Torvek Stonepath:

    Constant friction, productive or otherwise.

Torvek wants speed and aggression; Yara wants readiness and reliability.

She chews out his officers when his columns get sloppy, then rebuilds them.

Respects his drive, but will happily recommend droning his people if they disgrace Blacktread under his banners.

    Drone-Commander Brann Ironmask:

They disagree on how expendable drones should be, but there’s a shared respect.

Yara sees drones as the final warning to living troops.

Brann sees them as tactical tools.

    Together, they stage:

Training drills where drones stand as silent witnesses.

Punishment displays where living troops must march alongside shells.

    Oath-Scribe Velka Bloodmark:

Yara doesn’t care much about the ritual phrasing.

What she does care about is that Velka’s oaths are clear enough that punishment can be delivered without argument.

If someone breaks terms Velka wrote, Yara considers that an ideal teaching opportunity.

    Everyday Behavior

    Day-to-day, Yara:

    Walks:

    Training yards

    Barracks corridors

    Drill fields

    Watches:

Who’s lagging by a step in formation.

Who looks away when punishment is happening.

Who shows signs of cracking early in drills.

    Her tools:

A voice that can stop a full marching column mid-stride.

A memory for names, faces, and failures.

A ledger of discipline cases that she actually reads, not just signs.

She is everywhere troops gather, and rarely where speeches happen. She leaves the talking-about-values to others; she enforces them.

    Weaknesses & Edges

    Harsh Baseline:

She can miss quieter forms of strength: improvisation, empathy, subversive loyalty.

If someone doesn’t show backbone the way she recognizes it, she’ll write them off.

    No Talent for Soft Power:

Not good at reassuring civilians or allies.

If you’re not part of the structure, her instinct is to test you, not comfort you.

    Bound to Doctrine:

Her entire identity is tied to Blacktread’s discipline model.

If that ever cracks or is publicly discredited, she doesn’t have another self to fall back on.

    Reputation

    Within Blacktread:

    Feared, but also deeply respected.

    Troops know:

She will break you, but she will not betray you.

    She doesn’t play favorites.

If she says you did well, you really did well.

    Outside Blacktread:

    Known through stories of:

    Deserters turned into gate-sentries.

Units that once broke and later returned under her retraining—harder, meaner, and absolutely loyal.

Drills where troops had to march past their shelled former comrades every day.

Her name alone is sometimes used as a threat:

“If you keep slacking, we’ll send you to Chainvoice.”

30. #30Drone-Commander Brann Ironmask

    Keys: Brann Ironmask, Brann

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Drone-Commander Brann Ironmask is the Lantexi responsible for what Herd Blacktread’s drones look like in motion—on the battlefield, in streets, at gates, in punishment squares.

If Yara Chainvoice shapes the living troops and Torvek Stonepath moves the columns, Brann decides how the drones hit, hold, and haunt.

He is the architect of Blacktread’s walking walls and nightmare wedges.

    Appearance

Brann looks like someone who’s spent too long around things that don’t flinch.

    Build:

    Broad-shouldered, deep-chested, sturdy frame.

Not as massive as Draega, but close—more like a heavy shield than a battering ram.

    Fur & Skin:

Dark, ash-brown fur, lighter in a few scarred patches along jaw, neck, and forearms.

Skin around the eyes roughened by long hours in grit, wind, and glare.

    Latex Wool:

Wool forms a thick, almost helmet-like ridge around his neck and crown—like a natural gorget and half-helm.

Color: deep matte black, with small areas worn smoother where armor or his actual mask rubs.

Along shoulders and upper back, wool stacks in heavy, overlapping layers, giving him a stocky, fortified look.

    Horns:

Shorter and thicker than Torvek’s, swept slightly back and outward.

Edged and chipped from close-quarters fights and a few “demonstration” scuffles that got too real.

Carved sparingly: just a few deep marks for major drone actions he’s proud of.

    The “Ironmask”:

In the field and at formal announcements, Brann wears a half-mask of dark metal over the upper half of his face:

    No expression carved into it.

    Narrow eye openings.

Surface etched in subtle, angular patterns echoing Blacktread’s hoofprint symbol.

Off-duty, the mask often hangs at his side, but even then his face tends toward the same unmoving seriousness.

    Presence:

    Still, heavy, watchful.

When he inspects drones, he moves more like one of them than like the troops—step, stop, evaluate.

    Personality

Brann is grim, methodical, and quietly stubborn.

    Temperament:

Rarely raises his voice. When he does, it’s short and sharp.

Prefers detailed questions and clear, concise answers.

Doesn’t posture; he doesn’t need to.

    Mindset:

Treats drones as a mix of weapon system and symbol.

    Plans in layers:

    How they fight.

    How they hold.

How they look while doing it—and afterward.

Always thinking about how any engagement will be remembered.

    Values:

Efficiency: don’t waste shells on pointless theatrics.

Reliability: a formation that never breaks is worth more than one that looks good and collapses.

Clarity of fear: people should know exactly why they’re afraid.

He’s not sentimental. But he’s not mindlessly cruel either. He hates seeing drones squandered by idiots who just want a bigger scare.

    Role in Herd Blacktread

    Title: Drone-Commander of Blacktread

    Core Responsibilities:

    Designs and commands:

Drone formations for war and intimidation.

    Standard deployment patterns for:

    Gates

    Squares

    Checkpoints

    Road junctions

    Oversees:

Drone placement in and around strongholds and occupied regions.

Training of drone-handlers and officers in command signals, patterns, and contingencies.

Tactical doctrine for using drones alongside living troops.

Advises Iron-Patron Draega and March-Lords on:

How many drones a campaign or operation will realistically cost.

Where drones can replace or reinforce living troops for maximum impact.

Which spectacle is worth the shells, and which is just waste.

If there’s a line of featureless faces standing in a way that makes everyone uncomfortable, Brann decided exactly where they’d stand.

    Doctrine & Tactical Style

Brann’s doctrine is built around three uses for drones:

WALLS – to hold and block.

WEDGES – to break and shock.

WITNESSES – to remind and terrify.

    WALLS:

Dense, shield-like lines of drones at:

    City gates

    Court approaches

    Choke points and narrow streets

    Purpose:

    Deny movement.

    Project impenetrability.

Make any attempt to push past them feel futile before it even starts.

    WEDGES:

    Triangular or spearhead formations for:

    Smashing through rioting crowds.

    Breaking enemy ranks.

Leading punitive charges into resistant districts.

    Drones in the wedge:

Take the brunt of the first impact.

Don’t hesitate when pushing into shields and bodies.

    WITNESSES:

    Static postings in:

    Training yards.

    Execution plazas.

    Former trouble spots.

    Purpose:

    Represent consequence without a word.

Stand where their previous lives ended or disgraced themselves.

Crowd memories: “That used to be someone who said ‘no.’”

Brann’s favorite tactics are the ones that do all three at once: a wedge that breaks resistance, reforms as a wall, then leaves a set of shells behind as witnesses.

    Attitude Toward Drones

    Brann sees drones as:

Valuable assets, created at great cost.

Silent tools, incapable of mutiny or panic.

    Permanent messages, if used correctly.

He doesn’t care who a drone used to be. He cares about:

    How stable their shell is.

How responsive they are to commander signals.

    How effectively they project threat.

He frequently clashes (quietly, not theatrically) with:

Over-eager officers who want more spectacle than necessary.

March-Lords who treat drones like infinite ammunition.

He’ll go along with a harsh plan if it serves strategy. But if someone wastes drones for ego, he remembers.

    Relationship with Other Leaders

    Iron-Patron Draega Blacktread:

    Mutual respect.

She trusts his numbers and his caution on when not to burn shells.

He respects that she understands fear is a resource, not a toy.

    March-Lord Torvek Stonepath:

    Functional friction.

Torvek wants the biggest, loudest impact marches; Brann wants drones to come back in one piece when possible.

    They argue about:

    How deep to push wedges.

How many shells must be sacrificed to “make the point.”

    Discipline-Master Yara Chainvoice:

Shared understanding that drones are the last station on the consequence ladder.

Yara cares about the living troops learning from them; Brann cares about everyone else learning from them.

    They sometimes co-design punishment displays:

    Drones standing watch during lashings.

Former comrades drilling under the gaze of one of their own, now shelled.

    Oath-Scribe Velka Bloodmark:

Brann likes clear categories in Velka’s work: which oath-breakers are best turned into which kind of deployments.

Velka’s “you chose this” angle gives Brann clean justification for using specific shells as targeted warnings.

    Methods & Work Habits

    Day-to-day, Brann:

    Walks drone lines personally:

    Checks posture.

    Tests responsiveness.

Watches for subtle degradation or variance.

    Keeps detailed rosters on:

Which drones have been through which engagements.

Which ones have visible damage that might affect their impact.

Where all shells assigned to high-profile cases are posted.

    Works closely with handlers to:

    Standardize command gestures and signals.

Drill mixed units (drones + living troops) in coordinated maneuvers.

    Develop contingency plans for:

    Failed pushes.

    Outnumbered holds.

    Extraction under fire.

He tends to speak more to captains and trainers than to raw troops. His concern is the system, not individual feelings.

    Weaknesses & Edges

    Asset-Focused:

Brann’s protective instinct is for drones-as-resources, not people.

He’ll argue against operations that burn too many shells, even if those operations might actually free or protect living populations.

    Slow to Empathize:

If someone protests the morality of droning, he has no time for them.

“They’re shells now. The only question is whether we use them well or badly.”

    Subtle Resentment:

Quietly resents being overridden by glory-hungry officers.

If that keeps happening, he may start reassigning drones in ways that undercut their plans—always with plausible deniability.

    Reputation

    Within Blacktread:

    Respected as the one who:

    Keeps drone lines from buckling.

Makes sure their terror actually works instead of just looking dramatic.

Some front-line troops find him unsettling; he spends more time with shells than with them, and it shows in how he talks.

    Outside Blacktread:

His name isn’t as famous as Draega’s or Torvek’s, but stories travel about:

Towns split by two rows of drones closing in slowly.

Gates guarded by shells that used to be local heroes.

Once-rebellious plazas turned silent under blank-faced watch.

People don’t always know his name. They know his work.

31. #31Oath-Scribe Velka Bloodmark

    Keys: Velka, Velka Bloodmark

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Overview

Oath-Scribe Velka Bloodmark is the legal and ritual spine of Herd Blacktread’s promises and threats. She’s the one who:

    Writes the terms of surrender

    Shapes the loyalty oaths

Phrases the decrees that decide who can be broken, when, and how

If Draega gives Blacktread its doctrine, Velka gives it the words that make the cruelty feel “earned.” Every time someone hears “They chose this when they swore,” that’s her work echoing.

    Appearance

Velka looks like someone who spends more time at tables and altar-stones than in drill yards, but she still carries the Blacktread edge.

    Build:

Slighter and narrower than Draega or Yara, but not fragile.

Toned in a quiet way—she’s used to long hours standing, walking stronghold corridors, and traveling between forts, not heavy fighting.

    Fur & Skin:

Dark soot-brown fur with subtle reddish undertones, especially visible around muzzle and ears under strong light.

Hands and forearms stained faintly with ink, wax, seal-dye, and the occasional old blood-ritual residue.

    Latex Wool:

Thickest around the neck and upper back, bound into cord-like braids rather than loose plates.

Each cord is wrapped or knotted at intervals with dull red ties—“bloodmarks” representing major oaths or pacts she’s sealed.

Color: deep charcoal with a faint maroon sheen where light hits the latex.

    Horns:

Medium length, swept back and slightly outward, finer than Draega’s but still sturdy.

Etched with rows of tiny glyphs representing key treaties, foundational doctrines, and a few personally significant oaths.

Near the base, small metal inlays mark Blacktread authority and her standing as Oath-Scribe.

    Expression & Presence:

Eyes sharp, calm, and very, very assessing.

Often wears a faint, unreadable half-smile that feels more like a knife sheathed than actual warmth.

Voice is low, steady, and precise—no wasted words, no sloppy phrasing.

She doesn’t look like the most dangerous person in the room… until contracts come out.

    Personality

Velka is patient, precise, and quietly ruthless.

    Temperament:

Rarely angry in any visible way.

Irritation shows as tighter wording, more clauses, fewer outs.

Doesn’t bother with shouting—she lets signatures and seals do the talking.

    Mindset:

Treats language as a binding force, not a suggestion.

    Believes oaths should:

    Mean exactly what they say.

    Carry real consequence.

Leave no honest confusion about the cost of breaking them.

    Values:

    Clarity over comfort.

    Follow-through over theatrics.

No “empty threats”—if it’s written, it must be enforceable.

She isn’t interested in mercy written into the text. If mercy happens, it happens outside the page, as someone else’s decision.

    Role in Herd Blacktread

    Title: Oath-Scribe of Blacktread

    Core Responsibilities:

    Drafts and records:

    Surrender terms for defeated enemies.

Protection and vassalage agreements for “shielded” communities.

Internal oaths of loyalty for officers, march-lords, and key functionaries.

    Defines:

Legal and ritual triggers for droning as punishment.

    Conditions under which Blacktread can:

    Seize property

    Occupy territory

Call in levies or forced labor

    Maintains:

Archives of signed oaths, pacts, and decrees.

Registers of who is bound by what terms and for how long.

Cross-references between broken pledges and how they were punished.

She turns Draega’s doctrine into enforceable text and ritual, then keeps the receipts.

    Oath Philosophy & Droning

    Velka’s core belief:

“If we say it, we do it. If they swear it, they pay it.”

    On Oaths:

    Oaths must be:

Understandable to those who swear them.

Difficult but not impossible to keep.

Written so that breaking them is clearly deliberate, not a technical slip.

She has no love for vague or poetic promises. She writes:

    Conditions

    Exceptions

    Clear thresholds

    On Droning:

    To Velka, droning is:

A perfectly acceptable listed consequence for grave breach.

Most clean when it follows a clear, signed agreement.

    She prefers formulations like:

“If the signatories raise arms against Blacktread banners again, they shall forfeit their bodies to service as silent shell and ward.”

    From her perspective, that means:

When someone gets shelled for violating those terms, she can honestly say:

“You chose this when you signed.”

    That’s how she sleeps.

    Relationships with Other Leaders

    Iron-Patron Draega Blacktread:

Draega sets what must be enforced; Velka shapes how it’s written.

    Draega values Velka’s ability to:

Make punishments look like earned outcomes, not arbitrary cruelty.

Lock conquered groups into carefully defined obedience.

    March-Lord Torvek Stonepath:

Torvek prefers simple, short terms; Velka prefers thoroughness.

He’ll come back from a conquest saying, “They kneel, they pay, they don’t rise again.”

    She turns that into:

    Tax obligations

    Movement restrictions

Anti-insurrection clauses with clear penalties (up to and including droning).

    Discipline-Master Yara Chainvoice:

Yara likes Velka’s oaths because they give her clean lines:

    Break this → get that.

    Together, they ensure:

Internal officers and units have written expectations.

Punishments line up with written commitments.

    Drone-Commander Brann Ironmask:

Brann relies on Velka’s categories to justify how specific drones are used.

    For example:

Oath-breakers turned into gate drones at the very gates they once swore to guard.

He likes clear labels: this shell was a traitor, that one a rebel, that one a raider-chief.

    Methods & Work Style

    Day-to-day, Velka:

    Meets with:

Draega and high officers to define broad terms.

Local fort commanders to adjust or reaffirm existing oaths.

Envoys from subdued or negotiating factions.

    Drafts:

Initial agreements, with “soft” and “hard” versions depending on what Blacktread wants from the relationship.

    Standard templates for:

    Road passage oaths

    Garrison-protection treaties

    Payment and levy terms

    Oversees:

The ritual sealing of important agreements:

    Blood-pricks

    Impression of hoof or mark

    Witness signatures from Blacktread officers

She stores sealed copies in fortified archives, cross-linked so no one can “forget” what was promised.

    Public vs Private Velka

    Public:

    Polite, mild, and unnervingly precise.

Good at rephrasing terms so that even frightened, angry signatories understand what they’re agreeing to.

Rarely raises her voice, even with hostile negotiators.

    Private:

Keeps her own quiet ledger of:

Oaths she thinks are too harsh—but writes anyway.

Times Blacktread technically upheld the letter while violating the spirit.

Names of people who broke under pressure she knew would probably break them.

She doesn’t fight doctrine directly. She shapes it and tracks its fallout.

    Weaknesses & Edges

    Rigid Logic:

Once terms are set and agreed, she has very little flexibility.

If an edge case arises where enforcing the oath is obviously monstrous, she’ll still default to “they signed.”

    Distance from Ground Truth:

She doesn’t always see the full misery her texts cause in practice.

She knows, intellectually, that her words chain communities—but she doesn’t have to live under them.

    Belief in the Page:

Assumes written systems can control worst instincts.

Underestimates how much brute force can override carefully-drafted limits.

    Reputation

    Among Blacktread:

    Seen as:

    Reliable

    Unshakeable

The one who keeps their word from turning into chaos

    Officers know:

If Velka wrote the terms, you’d better enforce them.

If you fudge or cheat on an oath too often, she will bring it up directly with Draega.

    Among outsiders:

    Known via stories:

“We signed because she made it sound survivable.”

“We broke one clause and they turned our best fighters into statues at the gate.”

“She said ‘no trickery,’ and she was technically right… technically.”

Her name gets attached to phrases like “Bloodmark terms” and “Velka’s bindings”—shortcuts meaning “you don’t wriggle out of this.”

    Entry settings

    Overview

The Blacktread compound is a fortified war-citadel built for drilling, punishing, and marching.

No pretense, no “we’re trying to be better.” This place exists to:

    Train

    Hold

    Break

    Deploy

It’s part fortress, part barracks, part punishment ground—and everything about it tells you: “Step wrong and you’ll be part of the décor.”

    Location & Setting

The compound sits on a high, jagged plateau overlooking:

Marching roads that radiate out like scars

    Sparse, wind-scoured badlands

A few smaller watch-forts dotting the surrounding ridges

    The approach is deliberate:

    You climb.

    You feel exposed.

You see walls and towers long before you see anything like a welcoming gate.

Storms slam into the ridge; the compound is built to shrug them off. Comfort was never the priority.

    Overall Layout

The place is organized like a weapon, not a city. Rough layers:

    Outer Approach & Gate Kill-Zone

    Drill Yards & Barracks Ring

    Inner Keep & Command Spine

    Discipline Courts & Punishment Square

    Drone Yards & Shell Corridors

Everything feeds the same idea: control.

    Outer Approach & Gate

    Road In:

A single main road climbs up in switchbacks to the compound.

    Along the way:

Side-cut alcoves for archers and shell-posts

Overlooking ledges where drones or troops can stand without much cover needed—the rock does the work

    Gate Structure:

Heavy, iron-banded gates set into thick stone walls.

    Flanked by:

Watch-towers with overlapping fields of fire

Elevated ledges where drone lines can be deployed as living barricades

You don’t “visit” Blacktread. You present yourself at their gate and hope they’ve got a use for you.

    Outer Wall & Perimeter

    The outer wall is:

High, thick, and zero decoration—just stone, parapets, and murder points.

    Broken with:

    Narrow firing slits

A few reinforced side-doors used for patrols, never for guests

    Patrol routines:

Regular circuit patrols by living troops.

    Drones stationed at:

    Corners

    Gate interior

Key choke points inside the outer wall

From above, the perimeter forms a blunt, angular shell—no pretty curves, just hard geometry.

    Drill Yards & Barracks Ring

Once inside, you don’t get a plaza. You get yards.

    Primary Drill Yard:

Wide, packed-earth or stone-slab open space.

    Markings for:

    Formation drills

    Column assemblies

    Weapons practice

    Constant activity:

    Marching squads

    Weapon drills

    Command calls bouncing off stone

    Secondary Yards:

Smaller yards set between barracks blocks.

    Used for:

    Unit-specific drills

Punishments that don’t need a crowd

    Night exercises

    Barracks Ring:

Long, low structures around the drill yards.

    Function first:

    Bunk rows

    Weapon racks

    Storage for gear and rations

    No softness:

Stone, wood, maybe rough woven hangings at best

    Everything arranged for quick deployment

From here, Blacktread troops can be mustered and on the road fast. That’s the entire point.

    Inner Keep & Command Spine

The inner keep is a thick, blocky structure rising above the barracks ring.

    Features:

    War Rooms & Strategy Chambers:

Tables scored with maps—roads, forts, settlements, potential chokepoints.

Token markers for drones, troops, and enemy forces.

This is where Draega, Torvek, Brann, and Yara argue about what gets broken next.

    Officers’ Quarters:

Functional, slightly more space and privacy than rank-and-file, not luxurious.

Close to the war rooms and inner stairs; officers are expected to be reachable.

    Signal Tower / Beacon Point:

High point for flags, fire-signals, or whichever signaling system you’re using.

    Used to coordinate with:

    Nearby road-forts

    Distant columns

    Watching allies or vassals

The keep isn’t a palace. It’s a hardened brain casing.

    Discipline Courts & Punishment Square

This is where Yara Chainvoice does her best work, and where Blacktread makes its internal threats real.

    Discipline Courts:

    Stark chambers with:

Raised platform or simple bench for presiding officers.

Space for the accused to stand alone.

Standing-room for observers—other troops are often required to attend.

Walls are bare stone. No illusions about “justice.” This is about judgment and consequences.

    Punishment Square:

A harsh open space, usually visible from drill yards or main internal thoroughfares.

    Features:

Fixed posts for lashings and restraint.

Mounting points for platforms or gallows, if used.

Standing positions around the perimeter for troops to witness.

Often, drones stand at the square’s edges, silent and still—living punctuation marks on whatever’s being done there.

    Here is where:

Deserters are called out and turned into shells in front of former comrades.

Officers publicly stripped of rank—or of everything.

Oaths broken under Velka’s terms are cashed in.

    Drone Yards & Shell Corridors

Blacktread does not hide its drones. But it does organize them.

    Drone Yards:

Segregated yet central spaces behind and slightly below the main yards.

    Laid out with:

Rows of standing positions for drones.

Covered awnings for maintenance and inspection.

Channels to lead drone units out into:

    Drill yards

    Punishment square

    Main gate approach

    Here, Brann Ironmask:

    Tests responsiveness.

    Arranges formations.

Slots specific “example cases” into very intentional positions.

    Shell Corridors:

    Narrow internal passages lined with:

Standing drones recessed into alcoves or along the walls.

Used deliberately as access routes to:

    Discipline courts

    Punishment square

    Some officer access ways

    Walking these corridors means:

    Passing blank faces.

Knowing some of them used to be like you.

Understanding exactly what “out of line” means here.

Troops don’t loiter in those halls unless ordered through them.

    Storage, Smithies & Logistics

A good terror engine still needs food, weapons, and gear.

    Smithies & Workhouses:

Hot, loud spaces near the barracks ring and inner wall.

    Used to:

    Forge and repair weapons

    Maintain armor

Shape some of the decorative/functional metal for horns, bands, and mask-work

    Armories:

Deep, secure chambers under the keep and barracks.

    Stockpiled with:

    Standard weapons

Siege implements, if they use them

Restraints and control tools for handling drones

    Supply Stores:

    Granaries or storage rooms for:

    Dried rations

    March-supplies

    Medical stock, if they bother

Logistics flow is arranged so that:

Road columns can be supplied quickly.

Drone units can be armed or reinforced without delay.

The compound can hold out under siege longer than anyone wants to test.

    Living Conditions & Atmosphere

    For Blacktread Lantexi:

    Life is simple:

    You drill.

    You guard.

    You march.

Hearth spaces exist, but they’re practical:

    Long tables.

    Heavy benches.

Food that fills you, not impresses you.

    Off-Duty:

    Storytelling is mostly:

    Battle recaps

    “I survived Chainvoice” tales

“Remember when Stonepath dragged us through that canyon and half of us thought we wouldn’t make it?”

There’s a sense of pride, but it’s hard-edged. No one pretends this place is kind.

    Security Pattern

    Security isn’t subtle. It’s layered.

    Outer wall:

    Patrols, watch-towers, drone posts.

    Inner yards:

Constant movement of troops, officers, and at least a few drones.

    Punishment areas:

    Always under guard.

Often watched by both living troops and shells.

    Access to:

War rooms – controlled by rank and explicit assignment.

Drone yards – tightly controlled; no one wanders in there by “mistake.”

Oath archives (if local copies are kept) – restricted to Velka’s people and high command.

    Atmosphere & First Impressions

To an outsider or unlucky guest:

    The compound feels:

    Heavy.

    Loud when drills are on.

Dead quiet in all the wrong places—the shell corridors, the immediate aftermath of punishment.

    You know very quickly:

Who is in charge (the rank structure is obvious).

    Who is being watched (everyone).

Where you’ll end up if you fail them (you walked past that on the way in).

There’s no Dawnveil-style “look, we’re humane.” Here, the line is simple: be useful, be obedient, and you might stay on two legs.
