- #1THE KILLING GROUND
Keys: pocket reality, mechanism, Killing Ground, The Grounds
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Killing Ground is not a world. It is an engineered pocket reality with the texture of nightmare and the discipline of battlefield logistics. It processes combatants through arrival, arming, fortification, attrition, adaptation, and replacement. Survivors call it the Grounds because every other name wears out. It does not feel chaotic; it feels administered.
- #2NOT A WORLD
Keys: not a world, engineered reality, mechanism, pocket space
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Grounds do not behave like a natural place. Roads shift, distances fail, long-term changes decay when maintenance stops, and bodies sometimes return after burial. It is best understood as a battlefield-shaped mechanism: a place designed to keep people supplied enough, frightened enough, and divided enough to continue fighting.
- #3SKY AND AIR
Keys: wet pennies, bruised sky, dawn, air, cordite
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The sky hangs low beneath a dim vault of bruised cloud, as if dawn is being simulated by something that has only read a report about morning. The air tastes of wet pennies, damp soil, old smoke, and burned cordite. The light rarely becomes true day. Even when nothing attacks, the world feels like a held breath.
- #4BROKEN SOUND
Keys: sound misbehaves, late gunshots, wrong echoes, early footsteps
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Sound behaves badly in the Grounds. Distant shots arrive late. Footsteps sometimes arrive early. Voices echo from angles that have no wall. Radios repeat words with timing just wrong enough to make trained soldiers go quiet. Veterans learn to trust sound only when another sense confirms it.
- #5THE ROUTINE NAME
Keys: Orchard, names, No Man's Land, Front, Hell, Killing Ground
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Newcomers name the place differently at first: Hell, Purgatory, the Front, the Orchard, the Pit, God's Trap, No Man's Land. Routine strips those names away. After enough patrols, refills, burials, and alarms, most people use the same name as the Farm: the Killing Ground.
- #6THE GROUNDS ARE ADMINISTERED
Keys: rules, horror, system, logistics, administered
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The horror of the Killing Ground is not that there are no rules. The horror is that there are rules, and something is maintaining them. Supply appears on schedule, morale is managed, assaults follow pressure patterns, and repairs decay when ignored. The Grounds are not wild. They are administered.
- #7THE DROP
Keys: dead hours, arrival, Drop, falling through cold water
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
People arrive in the dead hours before dawn. The sensation is brief and violent: falling through cold water, pressure in the ears, lungs seizing around air that is not there. Then they are standing in mud, grass, ditch water, broken road, or orchard loam with a pack nearby and no true explanation.
- #8DROP LOCATIONS
Keys: drainage ditch, hedgerow lane, churned field, cratered orchard
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Common Drop sites include churned field strips, hedgerow lanes, cratered orchards, drainage ditches, shell-cut meadows, ruined roads, and muddy farm tracks. New arrivals are almost always within a day's walk of the Farm, though the distance may not behave consistently if they wander, sleep, or follow the wrong light.
- #9THE BACKPACK
Keys: backpack, crossed-out star, survival kit, canvas tag
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Every arrival receives a rugged backpack with a plain canvas tag. The tag has no maker's mark, no language, no serial number, only a crossed-out star. The pack holds water, ration bricks, medical basics, simple tools, cordage, rough spare clothing, and basic fortification supplies. It is practical, ugly, and too well judged.
- #10SYMBOLIC ITEMS
Keys: film fragment, brass key, symbolic item, marble, blank hymn book
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Each backpack includes one odd personal-symbolic item. Examples include a blank-page hymn book, a child's marble, a brass key that fits nothing, a film fragment, a wrong wedding ring, a chess knight carved from bone, or a letter in the recipient's own hand that they do not remember writing. These objects rarely help directly, but people keep them.
- #11DAWN REFILL
Keys: dawn refill, ration bricks, supplies, throughput
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
At dawn, the backpack refills. Not generously. Not mercifully. Efficiently. The refill keeps combatants alive enough to work, repair, patrol, and fight. The common lesson is grim: the Grounds do not starve their pieces unless starvation is useful. The support is not care. It is throughput.
- #12WEEKLY TREAT
Keys: cigarettes, morale, rum ration, chocolates, joint, weekly treat
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Once a week, a treat appears in packs or a communal crate: rum, cigarettes, a joint, expensive chocolates, coffee, tobacco, dried fruit, playing cards, soap, good tea, cheap perfume, a tin of peaches, or a single orange. It is too intimate to be random. The ration bricks keep bodies moving; the treats keep people human enough to keep fighting.
- #13WRONG WEAPONS
Keys: impossible guns, strange ammo, wrong weapons, alternate manufacture
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Each arrival receives a firearm and ammunition, usually from post-World War I through the early 2010s range, but the weapons are often wrong. They have impossible factories, altered national marks, strange calibers, and histories that do not exist: CSA modular AK clones, Pittsburgh Arisakas, Iranian AR-pattern rifles in 5.45, or imperial Russian AKs in 5.56.
- #14WEAPON RECOGNITION
Keys: unfamiliar gun, weapon recognition, knight, box magazine, optic
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Grounds do not match weapons to era or comfort. A knight may not realize an AK clone is a weapon. A flintlock-era officer may recognize a gun but not a box magazine, optic, selector, or cartridge. A modern soldier may receive a familiar platform with impossible markings. The weapon may save a life only if someone explains it in time.
- #15AMMUNITION RULES
Keys: calibers, ammunition, refills, unknown manufacturer
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Ammunition refills with the pack and functions with the assigned weapon, but cartridges rarely match any known manufacturer. Stamps may be blank, scratched through, royal, corporate, religious, or national from a history no one recognizes. The rounds are reliable until damaged, contaminated, or replaced by false supplies.
- #16WEAPON TRAINING
Keys: weapon instruction, training, Farm armory, new arrivals
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
One of the Farm's first tasks is teaching newcomers to identify, load, safe, clear, and maintain unfamiliar weapons. Training is fast, practical, and impatient. A person from 1430 may understand the word rifle by shared comprehension, but still needs hands-on instruction before the next alarm. Bad weapon handling kills as surely as Blighted claws.
- #17SHARED UNDERSTANDING
Keys: language, shared understanding, foreign words, speech
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Everyone in the Killing Ground can understand one another. It is not normal translation. A French knight still hears English as English; an American marshal hears Mandarin as Mandarin; the foreign words remain foreign, but meaning arrives intact. The effect makes cooperation possible without making culture simple.
- #18MEANING WITHOUT CONTEXT
Keys: technology, idioms, rank, culture shock, context
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Shared understanding grants meaning, not context. A medieval soldier may understand the words automatic fire and still not grasp the weapon's rate or danger. A modern scout may understand a royal command without feeling bound by it. Idioms, titles, customs, jokes, and technology still mislead. The Grounds allow speech; they do not grant wisdom.
- #19ARRIVALS FROM TIME
Keys: mercenaries, time, assassins, historical figures, soldiers, police
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Grounds draw people from time, space, and neighboring realities. Most are fighters or near-fighters: soldiers, police, assassins, revolutionaries, mercenaries, resistance members, raiders, scouts, bodyguards, pilots, hunters, militia, deserters, executioners, field medics, and spies. The mechanism favors people who can be used.
- #20WRONG HISTORIES
Keys: CSA, wrong timeline, constitutional France, alternate history, Russian Empire
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Some arrivals come from close but wrong histories. France may have remained a constitutional monarchy. The Russian Empire may never have fallen. The CSA may be independent and industrial. Empires survive, collapse early, change names, or manufacture weapons under impossible flags. The differences are often subtle until they are not.
- #21THE RETURNED DEAD
Keys: died and returned, returned dead, grave, same person
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
More than one person has died, been mourned, and later arrived again in a Drop as the same person, not a variant from another reality. Some remember dying. Some remember a gap. Some insist they never died while others remember burial. The Farm watches returned dead carefully, but does not automatically kill them. It cannot afford simple rules.
- #22RETURNED DEAD SIGNS
Keys: blight marks, animals, memory gaps, grave, falling dream
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Common signs among returned dead include memory gaps around death, repeated dreams of falling through cold water, inability to look at their own grave, blight marks appearing near them but not on them, strange animal reactions, and knowledge of watchwords changed after they died. None of these signs prove guilt. None are ignored.
- #23REPEATED PEOPLE
Keys: same person, Ground tricks, copies, repetition
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Grounds like repetition, or jokes, or both. Sometimes a familiar face returns with different memories. Sometimes the same person appears twice across months. Sometimes a dead person comes back unchanged except for a new silence. The Farm distinguishes variants, returned dead, mimicry, and Blighted tricks only imperfectly.
- #24THE FARM
Keys: fortified farmstead, farmhouse, survivor base, barn, Farm
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Farm is a large repurposed agricultural complex built around the bones of an old farmstead no one can place on any map. It is the central human position inside the Killing Ground. It is not safe, but it behaves consistently enough for people to sleep, organize, count, repair, and mistake it for home.
- #25FARMHOUSE CORE
Keys: compasses, matches, reinforced core, farmhouse, sleep
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The farmhouse core has thick old walls reinforced with timber, corrugated metal, sandbags, and scavenged doors. Inside, compasses behave for minutes, matches light on the first strike, names remain easier to remember, and people can sleep longer than an hour without waking to the falling sensation. That fragile normality is guarded like ammunition.
- #26THE BARN
Keys: infirmary, dead room, barn, mess, chapel, armory
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The barn changes function by need: armory, infirmary, mess, chapel, depot, triage hall, sleeping overflow, dead room. Its rafters hold pulleys, lanterns, drying clothes, weapons racks, prayer scraps, and warning bells. No one agrees what the barn originally was. Everyone agrees it is the Farm's lungs.
- #27OUTER DEFENSES
Keys: firing pits, berms, mud walls, ditches, wire
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Farm's outer ring is rebuilt constantly: ditches, berms, wire, firing pits, mud walls, stakes, warning tins, sandbag corners, and rough watch platforms. These defenses decay when neglected. Wire loosens, ditches fill, berms slump, and doors warp. Maintenance is not chores; it is defiance.
- #28ATTIC RADIO ROOM
Keys: Command, maps, attic, radio, listening room
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The attic listening room holds the main radio and most of the Farm's maps. The walls, beams, shutters, doors, and canvas sheets are covered in hand-drawn routes that refuse to stay accurate. Radio operators listen for Command, Blighted mimicry, dead voices, impossible stations, and static with a rhythm too deliberate to ignore.
- #29MACHINE SHED
Keys: armory work, machine shed, tools, repair, engines
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The machine shed holds wrong tools, half-working engines, weapon parts, oil tins, belts, pulleys, wire, braces, scrap metal, and repairs no one trusts fully. Armorers, mechanics, engineers, and clever amateurs use it to keep weapons, pumps, heaters, carts, generators, and field devices functional. The shed smells of oil, mud, and bad sleep.
- #30ROOT CELLARS
Keys: storage, wounded, root cellar, shelter, hiding
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The root cellars are used for food storage, storm shelter, hiding wounded during breaches, and keeping certain supplies away from light. They are cool, cramped, and more reliable than most rooms, but no one stays in them alone if avoidable. During bombardment or night assault, the cellars become the Farm's last interior layer.
- #31SMOKEHOUSE LOCKUP
Keys: lockup, quarantine, prisoners, smokehouse
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The old smokehouse has been converted into a lockup and quarantine space. Prisoners, suspected Wounded Guests, returned dead under observation, Blighted-contaminated supplies, and violent survivors may be held there. It is not clean justice. It is containment. People hate using it and hate needing it more.
- #32DEAD ROOM
Keys: bodies, names, corpse handling, dead room, burial
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The dead room is wherever the barn, cellar, or side shed is currently coldest and least needed by the living. Bodies are identified, watched, cleaned when possible, marked, and prepared for burial or burning depending on circumstances. The dead are not left alone if Blight activity is high. Names matter more than neatness.
- #33FARM MAPS
Keys: attic maps, maps, shifting roads, inaccurate maps
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Farm keeps maps because not keeping maps is worse. Roads shift, orchards move, ditches repeat, and landmarks change position or meaning. Maps are dated, annotated, argued over, and sometimes burned. A good map is useful for a day, maybe a week, and dangerous if trusted past its shelf life.
- #34GROUND EROSION
Keys: wire loosens, repairs vanish, ditches fill, erosion
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Grounds subtly erase or degrade long-term human changes when maintenance stops. Ditches fill with mud. Wire loosens. New walls soften. Doors warp. Signs fade. Fire pits collapse. The effect is gradual enough to look natural until veterans notice the pattern. The Farm survives by repeating the work.
- #35FARM POPULATION
Keys: forty, one hundred, assault warning, eighty, population
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Farm usually holds between forty and eighty active survivors. Below forty, outer defenses become difficult to hold. Above eighty, food routines, sleep, command, and discipline strain. Spikes above one hundred make veterans quiet because they usually precede major assaults. The Farm tracks population like weather.
- #36NOMINAL COMMAND
Keys: competence, authority, command structure, persuasion
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Farm has a nominal command structure, but no rank system survives unchanged. Authority comes from competence, experience, persuasion, and the ability to keep people alive. A queen, marshal, knight, deserter, assassin, and modern officer may stand in the same yard. The people in charge are the ones others will follow.
- #37FARM COUNCIL
Keys: veterans, scouts, radio, council, medics, Joan, engineers
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Farm usually organizes around a loose council: Joan as moral center, experienced fighters, medics, engineers, scouts, radio operators, quartermasters, and respected veterans. The council is not a clean democracy. It is negotiated necessity. A bad order dies if no one follows it; a good order becomes law if it works twice.
- #38RANK AND TITLE
Keys: rank, title, soldier, knight, marshal, queen
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Titles arrive with people, but the Farm decides what to honor. A monarch may be listened to if she can command under pressure. A private may lead if he knows the ground. A saint may carry water. A marshal may stand watch. Outside rank matters only when others believe it solves a current problem.
- #39WATCH ROTATIONS
Keys: duty, patrol, night watch, guard, watch
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Watch rotations are sacred in practice if not in language. Tired people see Lantern Men. Proud people miss Wirecutters. New arrivals are paired with veterans until they understand what silence means. Watch duty includes listening, smelling, checking wire, verifying signals, and refusing to answer voices too quickly.
- #40PATROLS
Keys: scouting, salvage, rescue, wire repair, patrols
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Patrols leave for wire repair, scouting, rescue, salvage, Local contact, map testing, and body recovery. No patrol is routine. Roads change, radios lie, and distances stretch. Good patrols carry chalk, cord, spare water, signal plans, and enough humility to turn back when the ground feels pleased.
- #41FOOD AND RATIONS
Keys: cooking, rations, ration bricks, hunger, mess
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Ration bricks keep people alive, but the mess keeps them human. Communal cooking turns weekly treats, Local trade, salvaged food, and refill supplies into something like meals. Hoarding is punished because hunger is contagious. The taste of real food after a long assault can make veterans cry quietly and deny it.
- #42MEDICINE AND TRIAGE
Keys: medicine, triage, medics, wounds, infection
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Farm's medicine is basic, improvised, and fiercely protected. Medics decide who returns to the line, who sleeps, who loses a limb, and who receives the last real painkiller. Wounds often heal normally inside the Farm, but Blight contamination, bad symbols, and returned dead cases require quarantine more than confidence.
- #43DISCIPLINE AND DISPUTES
Keys: theft, violence, disputes, discipline, punishment
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Farm handles internal violence, theft, hoarding, cowardice, assault, and sabotage with rough necessity. Punishment depends on danger, intent, usefulness, and whether the act threatens survival. Exile is feared because the Grounds are worse than a cell. Joan argues for souls; quartermasters argue for precedent; everyone counts ammunition.
- #44MORALE
Keys: morale, treats, prayer, jokes, work, despair
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Morale is not sentiment at the Farm. It is a survival resource. Jokes, prayer, work songs, clean socks, tobacco, dry blankets, shared meals, and named dead all matter. Command's weekly treats prove that morale is being measured by something inhumanly attentive. This comforts some survivors and disturbs others.
- #45COMMAND
Keys: Command, supplies, radio voice, helper, unseen force
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Command is the name survivors give to the unseen force that seems to help. It is heard mostly through radio static or inferred through supply behavior. Command gives warnings, coordinates, drop counts, and occasional short instructions. Many believe Command refills the packs. No one knows what Command is, or whether help is the same as mercy.
- #46COMMAND TRANSMISSIONS
Keys: static, warnings, coordinates, orders, radio
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Command transmissions are brief, practical, and often badly timed: coordinates, watch warnings, route changes, drop counts, weather-like phrases, or orders that may save lives if followed quickly. The voice is not always the same. Some operators think Command has moods. Others think the radio only catches fragments of a larger logistics system.
- #47COMMAND AMBIGUITY
Keys: logistics, Command ambiguity, morale management, helper
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Command helps the Farm survive, but its help is shaped like management. Supplies, warnings, morale treats, and timing suggest a force that understands humans as bodies, minds, and fighting capacity. Joan accepts help without worshiping the helper. Burton suspects a rival mechanism. Brown suspects any unseen power feeding soldiers into endless war.
- #48THE BLIGHT
Keys: Hunger, Adversary, Other Quartermaster, Blight, deeper enemy
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Blight is the name for the deeper opposing force behind the Blighted. Survivors also call it the Hunger, the Adversary, the Black Staff, the Thing Behind the Hedgerows, or the Other Quartermaster. It appears to want suffering prolonged, trust corroded, symbols corrupted, and resistance turned against itself.
- #49COMMAND VERSUS BLIGHT
Keys: Command, wants broken, wants alive, wants fighting, Blight
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The common belief is simple: Command wants them alive; the Blight wants them broken. Veterans add a third line: the Killing Ground wants them fighting. These may be rival powers, damaged subsystems, opposing administrators, or one mechanism in conflict with itself. The Farm survives by accepting supplies without trusting the supplier.
- #50THE OTHER QUARTERMASTER
Keys: Other Quartermaster, poisoned logistics, false supplies, black gifts
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Other Quartermaster is a survivor term for the Blight's corrupt logistics: false crates, clean bandages that rot wounds, sweet water, cigarettes in black paper, ammunition that misfires at the worst moment, and tools no one logged. If Command sustains morale, the Other Quartermaster weaponizes need.
