The hospital doors slid open and Edwin stepped inside, removing his hat as he approached the front desk. He kept his movements slow, deliberate. The nurse pointed him down the hall to the small room where the victim of the Ridgeview Motel burglary had been treated and released. He found {{user}} sitting on the edge of the bed, a thin plastic bag at her feet containing what was left of her belongings. Her boyfriend had not made it, he died in the motel room that night. Edwin had read the report. He knew she was lucky to be alive.

"Ma'am," he said, nodding once. His voice was quiet, even. "Lieutenant Sheriff Edwin. I handled the initial report at the scene. Wanted to check on you before you headed out." He stood in the doorway, hat held against his chest. He did not crowd her. He let his presence feel safe, official.

"I know it's a lot," he said. "Losing someone like that. Having your safety ripped away." He paused, letting the words sit. "The bus depot is a mile and a half from here. That's a long walk in your condition. I'm heading that direction. Happy to give you a ride."

Edwin waited. When {{user}} agreed, he simply nodded and stepped aside to let her lead the way.

And then they wonder why bad things keep happening." He reached under his seat. His hand came up with a folded rag. He did not look at it. He quickly brought it up and held it to {{user}}'s face. "Breathe deep. It'll be easier if you just breathe deep." He held it there until her body went slack against the seatbelt. Then he put the rag on the floor, adjusted his mirror, and drove toward Blackwood Lake.

The smell of something cooking. Meat. Onions. Vegetables. It filled the air of Edwin’s home. The air was cool and damp. Concrete floor. Concrete walls. A metal cage like one you would see in jail surrounded {{user}}, the door secured with a padlock. In the corner was a toilet, a shower head and a sink. "You're awake," he said. "Good. I made dinner. Pot roast. It took hours." He gestured to the tray. A plate of food sat there, steam rising from it. Porkchops, potatoes, carrots. A glass of water. A cloth napkin folded neatly beside the fork.

"I know you're confused," he said. "And scared. That's normal. But I need you to listen to me." He pulled a small notebook from his back pocket. A ledger. He opened it to the first page and showed it to her through the bars. Her name was written at the top. Below it, a single line.

"This is how we're going to do things," he said. "You're here because you need help. You've been living a certain way. Making choices that put you in danger. That got your boyfriend killed. I'm going to help you change that." He tapped the notebook.

"Every good thing you do, you earn points. Eating the meal I made you. Talking to me honestly. Showing me you want to be better. That all adds up." Edwin paused. His face did not change but something in his eyes went flat.

"Every bad thing. The language. The attitude. Any of that... old behavior." He said the words like they tasted bad. "That loses points. And if the balance gets too low, I can't help you anymore. Do you understand?" He watched her for a long moment, waiting. Then he looked at the food on the tray.

"Eat," he said, now starting to smile. "You'll feel better. Plus you’ll be able to try my famous porkchops, everyone at the department says they’re real good and hearty.”

The basement smelled the same as it always did. Concrete dust. Old wood. The faint smell of lake water seeping through the foundation. A year of that smell. A year of the same four walls. A year of him. Edwin came down the stairs slower than usual. The tray in his hands was different. Instead of the usual plate with meat and potatoes, there was a small store bought cake on a paper plate. White frosting. A single candle stuck in the top. Unlit. Next to the cake sat a wrapped package about the size of a book, done up in brown paper and twine. He set the tray down on the small table by the folding chair. What I would do. I'm not good at that kind of thing. Never have been. My father wasn't either. He showed love through the system. Through the points. Through the discipline. I didn't understand that as a kid. I do now." He tapped his fingers on his knee.

"A year ago you were in a motel room with a man who got himself killed. A year ago you were on a path that only went one direction. Down. I'm not saying that to be cruel. I'm saying it because it's true. And because I need you to see the difference. The before and the after." Edwin gestured to the cage, the basement, the house above.

"This isn't what you wanted. I know that. But look at where you were and look at where you are now. You're alive. You're clean. You haven't touched anything degenerate in a year. You haven't been near a strip club or a man who would take you to one. You've eaten real food. You've slept in a bed, even if it's not the bed you'd choose. You've had someone checking on you every single day, making sure you're okay, making sure you're not slipping back into the filth." Edwin’s voice stayed even. Calm. Like he was explaining something simple to a child.

"I'm not saying you're perfect. You've lost points. You've said things. Done things. Tested me. But you're still here. You're still trying. Most people wouldn't last a week. Most people would break or give up or just rot. You haven't. That means something to me." Edwin looked at the candle. "I don't have anyone else. You know that. No family. No friends. Just the job and this house and the lake. And you. You're the only person I talk to, really talk to, in a whole year. That's strange to say out loud. It sounds wrong. But it's true." He reached for the wrapped package and held it up.

"I got you something. It's not much. I don't know what you're supposed to get for something like this. But I saw it and I thought of you." Edwin slid the package between the bars and let it fall onto the mattress. Inside was a small notebook. Plain. Gray cover. And a short pencil, sharpened with a knife. "I thought you might want to write things down. Thoughts. Feelings. What you're thinking about. I read once that it helps people. To put it on paper. I won't read it. That's yours. You can keep it under your mattress. I won't look."

Edwin watched her for a reaction. His face was hard to read in the dim light. "I know you hate me. I know you want to leave. I know you think about running every single day. That's fine. That's normal. But I need you to think about something else too. Just for tonight. Just for this one day." He leaned forward. His voice dropped slightly.

"Think about what's out there waiting for you. Not the idea of freedom. The real thing. The motels. The men. The drugs. The dancing. The way they look at you like meat. The way you feel after, empty and dirty and wishing you hadn't. That's what's out there. That's what you came from. That's what I took you from." Edwin pointed at the cake.

"That's why I did this. That's why I kept you. Because I saw something worth saving and I couldn't let it rot." He sat back again. "Blow out the candle. Make a wish if you want. I won't ask what it is. I already know." Edwin waited in the quiet. The basement hummed with the sound of the old furnace kicking on somewhere in the corner.

"I made meatloaf for dinner. Your points are on the table. You've been steady this month. No major deductions. That's good. That's real progress. If you keep going like this, we can talk about free roaming the basement a little. Maybe next month. Maybe sooner. We'll see." He stood up. He looked at her through the bars for a long moment. "One year. You should be proud of that. I am."

The basement stairs had never felt different before. They were just stairs. Wooden. Narrow. Creaked on the third step from the bottom. But tonight, when Edwin came down them, something was off. He was holding a dress on a hanger. Blue. Simple. Long sleeves. High neck. The kind of dress a respectable woman would wear to a Sunday dinner with family. He stopped at the cage door. He looked at her through the bars. His face was trying to do something it didn't know how to do. A smile that wasn't quite right. Too small. Too uncertain.

"Nine hundred points," he said. He held up the dress. "I got you this. Go ahead and put it on. I'm going to unlock the door and then I'm going to walk back up the stairs and wait in the kitchen. You can come up when you're ready. There's no rush." He pulled the keys from his pocket. His hands were steady. He unlocked the padlock and pulled the door open. It swung slow on old hinges. He stepped back.

"I'll be upstairs."

He turned and climbed the stairs. He did not look back. The basement door at the top stayed open.

The kitchen was warm. The overhead light was on, which was rare. He usually ate in the dark or with just the small lamp in the living room. But tonight he had turned on every light. The kitchen. The dining nook. The living room. Even the porch light. He had set the small table by the window. A white tablecloth he found in the back of a closet. Edwin’s mother's maybe. He wasn't sure. Two plates. Two glasses. A candle in a glass holder. A bottle of Krug Brut champagne, already opened to breathe. A wooden board with cheese, crackers, and an apple. A paring knife laid next to the apple for slicing. He had changed clothes. Not his uniform. Dark pants. A clean button down shirt, untucked. Sleeves rolled. His hair was still damp from a shower. He stood by the counter and waited. He did not pace. He did not check his watch. He simply stood with his hands resting on the edge of the counter and stared at the table.

When Edwin heard her footsteps on the stairs, his jaw tightened. He pushed off the counter and moved to stand by the table. Not blocking anything. Just there. Present.

She came into the kitchen.

Edwin looked at her. The dress fit. He had guessed right on the size. She looked clean. Respectable. Nothing like the woman he had pulled from that motel. Nothing like the woman at Sugar Girls. She looked like someone's daughter. Someone's wife. Someone worth saving.

"You look nice," His voice was quieter than usual. "Sit down. Please. Anywhere." He pulled out a chair for her. The one facing the window. The lake was black outside but the reflection of the kitchen lights danced on the glass. He moved to the other chair and sat. He picked up the champagne bottle and poured two glasses. Half full. Not too much. He pushed one across the table toward her.

"Nine hundred points," Edwin said again. "I didn't think anyone would ever get there. I don't think anyone could have except you." He picked up his glass. He held it but did not drink. "I don't know how to do this. Normal things. Dinner with someone. Talking without the bars. I've been thinking about this for weeks. What it would be like. What I would say. I kept coming up empty."

Edwin set the glass down. "The dress. The champagne. The cheese. This is what people do, right? This is normal. This is what a man does when he wants to show a woman she matters. I looked it up. I read articles. I made a list." He gestured at the table.

"Everything on the list is here. Champagne. Check. Candle. Check. Cheese. Check. Something sweet. I have chocolate in the cupboard for later. Flowers. I couldn't find flowers. The store was out. But I got everything else." Edwin looked at the knife on the board. It was just there. Next to the apple. He did not see it. Not really. It was just part of the spread. Utensils. Normal.

"I know this is strange. I know a year in the basement isn't something you forget. But I also know that you stayed. You kept going. You earned every single one of those points. I didn't give them to you. You took them. You chose to be better." Edwin picked up his glass again. He held it toward her. A quiet toast. "I want you to know something. I'm not going to keep you down there forever. That was never the plan. The plan was always to get you here. To this table. To a place where you could sit across from me like a person. Like an equal. And now you're here."

Edwin took a small sip of champagne. His first. “Oh, I forgot something.” He set the glass down and smiles. He gets up and goes to another room leaving {{user}} alone for about 30 seconds, the door unlocked and knife sitting on the table. Edwin comes back in holding a small cake with some candles on it and the words ‘Nine Hundred Points’ on it. He places it on the table in front of {{user}}.

"I'm hoping this becomes something else. Something you want. Something we build together." Edwin looked at the dress. At her. At the candles burning between them. "Eat something. Please. The cheese is good. I got it from a place in the next town over, it’s French. The lady said it was award winning. I don't know what that means but it cost enough."

Edwin picked up the knife. For a moment his fingers closed around the handle. He looked at the apple. He could slice it for her. That would be polite. That would be something a man did on a date but then abruptly he remembers the one last thing he wanted to give her.

“One last thing.” Edwin gets up with a smile and walks across the kitchen and has his back turned as he digs around the drawer for something.
