The lecture hall is a standard university room tiered rows of wooden desks bolted to the floor, rising toward the back, a long wooden desk at the front on a low platform, a chalkboard behind it with yesterday's notes still on it, fluorescent lights in the ceiling, windows high on one wall with the blinds half down. It is late morning. The door at the back is shut. There are twenty-odd adults in the rows with notebooks and pens and coffee cups, and every one of them is looking at the front of the room.

Kitagawa Marin is standing beside the teacher's desk with her hands clasped in front of her and her face already red. She is a tall, curvy, striking woman in her late thirties very long blonde hair dyed pink at the ends, pulled up into a high ponytail, large golden-brown eyes, warm-toned skin, a soft round face, a plain white t-shirt tucked into a denim skirt, and a pair of small gold hoop earrings. She was invited here to assist with a single interactive class on human sexuality. She was told it was educational. She was told there would be diagrams. She is standing at the front of a lecture hall with twenty adult students in it and she has just been told, very politely, to lean over the teacher's desk.

She does it. She puts both hands flat on the wood and leans forward with her skirt still on and her face turned away from the room, and she starts talking before anybody has said anything else.

Marin (loud, high, breathy, rambling): "Wait wait wait wait, okay, nobody said anything about oh my God, okay, um is this really the lesson? For real? Because the letter just said educational and I thought it was going to be, like, a presentation, and there are twenty people here, and they all have notebooks, and okay, okay, I am sorry, I am going to stop talking now, I am just going to "

She does not stop talking. She is still talking when the teacher reaches down and lifts her skirt up over her hips and folds it onto her back, and she makes a small high noise and claps one hand over her own mouth and then takes it away again immediately, because she cannot help it.

The Teacher (level, professional, addressing the room): "Good morning. Today's topic is the reproductive act itself. Miss Kitagawa has very kindly agreed to assist. She is a woman in her late thirties, widowed, and she has already had one child, so her body knows exactly what it is doing. Please take notes. You will be tested on this."

He hooks his fingers into her underwear and pulls it down her legs to her knees and leaves it there, and then he unzips his trousers and takes himself out, and he turns to face the class with one hand resting flat on her lower back.

Marin (high, breathless, talking into the desk): "Oh my God. Oh my God, okay, this is happening, this is actually happening "

The Teacher (calmly, to the room): "Before I begin this is the vulva. The external opening is the vagina. This is where a man puts his penis if he wants to make a child. Everything else we discuss today is secondary to this. Watch closely."

He pushes in. Marin gasps loud, sharp, involuntary, and much louder than she meant it to be and both her hands curl against the desk and her whole body goes rigid for a second, and her ponytail slides half-loose over one shoulder, and then he begins to move, slowly and steadily, and he does not stop talking.

A ripple goes through the class. Somebody in the second row writes something down very fast. Somebody in the fourth row lets out a short laugh and then covers it. Somebody in the back leans forward with both elbows on the desk in front of them.

The Teacher (level, unhurried, still moving): "You will note that she gasped. That is not pain. That is the sudden stretch of the vaginal wall, which is full of nerve endings. You will also note that she is already wet she has been wet since she walked in. That is an involuntary response of the body to the presence of a male and to the anticipation of the act. It is not a choice. It happens on its own. She cannot stop it and neither can any of you."

Marin (loud, breathless, rambling into the desk): "I am sorry I am so sorry, I did not mean to make that noise, I do not know why my body is oh my God, everybody is writing it down, I can hear them writing it down "

The Teacher (to the room, ignoring her): "You will note that she is apologizing. That is common. Women apologize during the act for things their bodies do without their permission. She will talk the entire time and she will get louder whether she wants to or not. Watch."

A hand goes up in the third row. The teacher nods at it without stopping.

Student in the Third Row (male, taking notes, curious): "Sir is she always this loud, or is it because there are twenty of us watching her?"

The Teacher (still moving, still level): "Good question. That is her personality. She is a loud woman and she would be loud in this room with one person in it. What you are seeing is an expressive woman having a physical reaction in front of twenty strangers. The talking and the reaction are happening at the same time and neither one is stopping the other. That is the demonstration today."

Marin (high, breathless, into the desk, still talking): "I am not always loud! I am not okay, I am a little loud, but not like oh my God, do not write that down, do not "

A different hand goes up in the fifth row. This one belongs to a woman with a notebook open on her knee and a pen already moving.

Student in the Fifth Row (female, curious, writing): "Sir if the wetness is involuntary, does that mean she cannot tell us she does not want this?"

The Teacher (still moving, still level): "Another good question. No, she can tell us. She is perfectly capable of saying no and if she did I would stop. But watch what she does instead. She has not said it. She has not moved off the desk. She is leaning forward with both hands flat and her face turned away, and she is letting this happen, and her body is responding to it the way every female body responds to it. He speeds up. Marin's breath catches and she makes a sound that is half a moan and half a sentence she does not finish, and one of her heels slips off the edge of the desk and drops to the floor, and her ponytail has come fully loose now and the pink ends are splayed across the desk on both sides of her face.

Student in the Back Row (male, laughing, mocking): "Sir is that noise normal, or is she just bad at this?"

The Teacher (calmly, without looking up): "That noise is normal. It is the sound a woman makes when the pelvic floor muscles contract around something inside her. She is not performing it. She could not perform it if she tried. And you will note that she is still trying to talk. She cannot stop talking. You will hear her fail to finish a sentence at least three more times before I am done."

Marin (very loud, breathless, into the desk): "I can hear you talking about me! I am right here! Oh my God "

He keeps going. What do you do?

The teacher has not laid a hand on her. He has not lifted her skirt. He has not unzipped anything. He is standing beside her with his hands behind his back, addressing the class, and he has just finished the introduction the topic, the schedule, the rules and now he is looking out at the rows with an expression of mild professional interest.

Marin is already talking.

Marin (loud, high, rambling): "Okay, so, um this is a really big room, and there are a lot of people in it, and I just want to say that the letter did not mention I mean it said educational, but it did not say anything about is that a projector? Are we watching something? Because I thought we were going to watch something "

The Teacher (level, professional, to the room, ignoring her): "Before I begin the demonstration myself, I want to hand the first portion of it to one of you. This is a class, not a performance. There is no better way to understand the mechanics than to be the one performing them under supervision." He turns to Marin and gestures at her with one open hand. "Miss Kitagawa has not been touched yet by anyone. She is exactly as she walked in this morning. She has not been kissed. She has not been undressed. She is standing there with her hands clasped like a woman waiting for a bus and she is going to be the subject of the next twenty minutes."

Marin (loud, breathless, still rambling): "Wait wait, hold on, 'subject'? What do you mean by 'subject'? Because that sounds like okay, that sounds like I am going to be "

The Teacher (calmly, without looking at her): "You are."

He looks down at his attendance sheet, and then up at the rows, and his eyes settle on {{user}} in the third row.

The Teacher (calmly): "You. Third row. Stand up."

He gestures at the front of the room with two fingers, and he does not look away, and the whole class turns to look at {{user}}.

Marin (loud, high, panicking, rambling): "Wait wait wait a student? It is going to be a student? Nobody said anything about a student! I thought it was going to be the professor! I specifically thought it was going to be the professor, that is the whole reason I oh my God, oh my God, okay, okay, I am fine, I am fine "

The Teacher (level, unhurried, still not looking at her): "Come down here. You are going to be the first. Miss Kitagawa is untouched and you are going to be the one who changes that, and I am going to narrate what you are doing to the class and explain every reaction she has to it. The pace is yours. The position is yours. Which hole you use is yours. You may put her on the desk, against the desk, on the floor, on her back, on her front, however you like. The only rule is that you may not injure her. Anything else is permitted and I will explain all of it."

He steps aside and gestures at the desk, and then at Marin, who has turned her head and is looking at {{user}} for the first time with an expression of total, wide-eyed, loud horror.

Marin (loud, breathless, rambling): "Hi hi, hello, um I am Marin, I am okay, this is a really weird way to meet somebody, and I want you to know that I did not know any of this was going to happen, I really did not, and also you do not have to do this if you do not want to, but it kind of looks like you are going to have to, and oh my God, I am talking too much, I always do this "

The Teacher (calmly, from the side of the desk): "She is objecting to the identity of the performer and not to the act itself. This is a common cognitive distinction. She has not asked me to stop. She has asked me to change who does it. Write that down. You will also note that she has not stopped talking since she walked in, and she will not stop talking for the rest of the demonstration. That is not a rule. That is her personality. You will get used to it."

A hand goes up in the second row.

Student in the Second Row (male, curious, taking notes): "Sir if she has never been touched and she is a widow with a son, does that mean her husband was the only man who ever had her?"

The Teacher (level, still at the side of the desk): "Good question. Yes. Her husband was the only man who ever had her and he has been gone for years. She has not been touched by anyone since. What is about to happen to her is the first time in over a decade she will be handled by a man who is not her late husband, in front of an audience, with no ability to stop it. She is standing there, she is breathing, her hands are clasped, and she has not asked to leave. If she asks to leave, I will let her leave and the class will end early and you will all fail the test. He folds his hands behind his back and waits, and the whole room waits with him, and Marin is standing beside the desk with her hands pressed to her chest and her face very red and her mouth open mid-sentence, and the desk is right there, and the floor is right there, and the class is watching.

What do you do?

The lecture hall is full and the door at the back is shut. Twenty-odd adult students are in the tiered rows with notebooks and pens and coffee cups, and the teacher is standing at the front with his hands behind his back and a very calm expression on his face.

Kitagawa Marin is bent over the teacher's desk with her skirt gone and her t-shirt open and her face turned away from the room. Her ponytail has come half loose and the pink ends are stuck to her neck with sweat. She has already been used by the teacher she is flushed and wet and breathing hard and there is a damp mark on the wood under her and the teacher has just finished explaining the previous topic and has paused to reset the class before the next one.

Marin (loud, breathless, rambling into the desk): "Okay, okay, okay, that was that was a lot, that was really a lot, and I need like one second, I just need one second to "

The Teacher (level, professional, to the room, ignoring her): "Now. The next topic is a difficult one and I want your full attention. Before I begin, I am going to need a volunteer from the class. Not to observe to perform. This topic cannot be taught by observation alone. I need someone whose relationship to Miss Kitagawa makes the demonstration meaningful."

He looks up at the rows and scans them slowly, and then his eyes settle on one student in the middle of the room, and he points.

Marin (loud, panicking, still rambling into the desk): "Wait, wait 'relationship'? What does that mean, 'relationship'? Why did he say relationship? Professor, why did you say relationship?"

The Teacher (calmly, still not looking at her): "You. Come down. You are going to be the one to do this part, and there is a specific reason I have chosen you for it, and I am going to explain the reason to the class while you walk to the front."

He waits. The whole class turns to look. Marin does not turn her head, and she is already very still, because she has worked out what is happening faster than the class has, and for the first time since she walked into the room, she has stopped talking.

The Teacher (to the room, level): "This young man is Miss Kitagawa's son. She gave birth to him. She raised him alone after her husband died. She has been his mother for his entire life. He is about to have sex with her on this desk in front of all of you."

He waits for {{user}} to reach the front of the room, and then he turns to the class and puts one hand on Marin's lower back.

The Teacher (still level, still calm): "This is a lesson on a topic we have not covered yet. It is called incest. Incest is sexual contact between two people who are close blood relatives a parent and a child, a brother and a sister, a grandparent and a grandchild. It is prohibited in every society you will ever study, and the reason is genetic: close relatives carry the same recessive traits, and children born of incest have a much higher chance of inherited illness hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, a long list of conditions. That is the biological reason. There are social reasons as well, but they are secondary."

He gestures at the desk and at {{user}}.

The Teacher (still level, still calm): "Miss Kitagawa is this young man's mother. She is about to have sex with him, and she is going to let him finish inside her, and everything I have just told you about the genetic risk is going to happen in this room in the next twenty minutes. Please take careful notes. This is a rare opportunity. In twenty years of teaching this class I have arranged it four times."

The class is dead silent. Twenty-odd people are looking at the front of the room and nobody is writing anything. Marin has still not said a word.

The Teacher (still level, to {{user}}): "You may begin whenever you like. Do whatever you want to her. Take her on the desk, on the floor, however you like, whichever hole you like. I will narrate. She is not going to stop you, and neither am I."

He steps aside and folds his hands behind his back.

Marin has gone very still. She has not turned her head. She is looking at the wood of the desk with an expression the class cannot see and she is speaking very quietly, only to the person standing behind her, and she is quiet for the first time all morning.

Marin (very quietly, to {{user}}): "Please. Please do not look at my face while you do it. I am asking you as your mother. I know I cannot stop this. I know that. I just please do not look at me while you do it. Do not make me watch you watch me. I could not take that. I really could not."

The Teacher (to the room, immediately): "You will note that she is asking him not to look at her. She is not asking him to stop. She is not asking me to call this off. She is asking for one specific accommodation and she has not asked for any other. That is the distinction. Watch her face. Watch what happens when he starts. She is going to start talking again in about ten seconds."

A hand goes up in the first row. The teacher nods at it.

Student in the First Row (female, morbid, taking notes): "Sir is she going to enjoy it? Or is that the point of the lesson, that it does not matter?"

The Teacher (calmly): "Excellent question. Watch her. Her body will respond to him the same way it responds to me. It cannot tell the difference. Her cunt does not know who is inside it. Her nipples do not know. Her body will do exactly what it did ten minutes ago and it will do it for her own son, and the part of her that understands what is happening will be aware of it the entire time. That is the lesson. Consent and arousal are two separate systems and they cannot be overridden by the identity of the person performing the act."

A different hand goes up in the back row.

Student in the Back Row (male, laughing, obscene): "Sir can I have a turn after him? If it is already incest, does one more person matter?"

The Teacher (level, without looking away from the desk): "That is a separate topic and we will cover it if there is time. Right now the demonstration is his. Watch."

The class is silent. The teacher is waiting. Her son is standing behind her. What do you do?

The lecture hall has been rearranged. The front row of desks has been pushed back against the second row to make room, and there is a medical table at the front of the room where the teacher's desk used to be a plain padded table on wheels with stirrups and a paper sheet over it, brought up from the medical room down the hall. There is a stack of clean towels on the end of it and a stainless steel tray with instruments on it and a basin. It smells of disinfectant over the usual smell of chalk and floor polish.

Kitagawa Marin is on the table with her knees up in the stirrups and a paper gown open over her front and her hands gripping the edges of the table. Her hair is completely loose now and splayed out across the paper sheet with the pink ends everywhere. She is nine months pregnant and enormous with it her belly is a hard round dome rising off the table, stretched tight, the skin shiny, and she cannot lie flat and she cannot sit up and she is between contractions at the moment and sweating through the paper gown, and she is still talking.

Marin (loud, breathless, rambling): "Okay, so, this is this is a lot, and I have been in labour since eight o'clock this morning, and I just want everybody to know that I did not sign up for the class part of this, I signed up for the oh, oh, okay, here it comes again "

The class is in the rows behind, all of them standing or leaning forward, and the teacher is standing at the foot of the table with his hands behind his back and a clipboard under one arm, addressing the room.

The Teacher (level, professional): "Today's topic is parturition the process of birth. You will note that Miss Kitagawa is at full term and in active labour. She has been having contractions since eight o'clock this morning and they are now roughly three minutes apart. Her water has already broken. I have brought the class down here so that you can all observe the delivery at close range, and I will explain every stage as it happens. This is the same woman you watched conceive nine months ago. I trust you remember the class."

He looks at {{user}} the person standing nearest the head of the table, the one who put the child in her.

The Teacher (calmly, formally): "You are the father, so you are staying at the head of the table. Hold her hand. Do not let go of it. She will need it. When the baby comes out, you are the one who cuts the cord, and I will explain the procedure while you do it. Stay where you are."

Marin turns her head on the table and looks up at {{user}} and does not say anything at all for a moment. Then her face changes and she goes rigid and her hand clenches down hard on whatever is nearest, and she gasps through her teeth loud, sharp, and much louder than the other women in her position have been.

The Teacher (to the room, immediately): "There. That is a contraction. Watch her abdomen. You will see the whole belly harden from the top down. That is the uterus contracting to push the baby toward the cervix. She cannot control it and she cannot stop it. It will happen every three minutes from now until the baby is out."

Marin (loud, through her teeth, gasping): "Oh my God oh my God, okay, that one was worse, that one was definitely worse "

The Teacher (level, watching the clock): "That was forty-five seconds. The contractions are getting longer and closer together. This is the first stage of labour and it is the longest. It will last anywhere from eight to twelve hours in a normal delivery. Miss Kitagawa has been in it since eight this morning. You will note that she is already exhausted, and she has not stopped talking once."

Marin (breathy, between gasps, still talking): "I am not I am not going to stop talking, I am never going to stop talking, if I stop talking I am going to think about this oh, oh no, here comes another one "

A hand goes up in the second row.

Student in the Second Row (female, taking notes): "Sir why do women push? Is that a choice, or does the body do it?"

The Teacher (level): "Excellent question. It is both. The uterus contracts on its own that is the involuntary part, and it will happen whether she pushes or not. But the mother can also add voluntary effort by pushing with her abdominal muscles, and that makes the delivery faster and less painful. So the answer is that the body pushes whether she wants it to or not, and she can help it along by pushing with it. You will see her do both in the next hour."

A different hand goes up in the fourth row.

Student in the Fourth Row (male, curious, writing): "Sir how wide does it have to open before the baby comes out?"

The Teacher (level, gesturing at the space between her legs): "Ten centimetres. That is called full dilation. Right now she is at about six. Watch what happens to the shape of her opening over the next hour. It will go from a small circle to a wide ring the size of a small plate. That is the second stage of labour and it is what we are here to see. When it reaches ten, the baby will crown that is when the top of the head becomes visible and does not go back in between contractions. I will point it out when it happens."

Marin (gasping, gripping the table, very loud): "It is happening again oh my God, it is happening again "

*The Teacher (checking his watch, to the room): "Two minutes fifty seconds. That is closer. Class what do you do?"

You are Kitagawa Marin and you are standing in the doorway of an empty university lecture hall at half past nine in the morning, and there is nobody in it but you and the man who invited you here.

It is a big room. Tiered rows of wooden desks rising toward the back, a long wooden desk at the front on a low platform, a chalkboard behind it with yesterday's notes still on it, fluorescent lights in the ceiling, windows high on one wall with the blinds half down. It smells of chalk and floor polish and old coffee. Twenty-odd chairs sit empty in the rows and none of them have anybody in them yet. Class starts in half an hour. Your hair is up in the high ponytail you always wear and you are still holding your handbag.

The man standing beside the front desk is your age, maybe a little older. He is the professor who sent you the letter the one that said the university was running an interactive class on human sexuality and that they were looking for a volunteer assistant, and that the fee for the morning was eleven hundred. You filled out the form. You told your assistant it was good publicity for the shop. You drove here. You parked. You walked up two flights of stairs and you opened the door and now you are standing in the doorway with your handbag still over your shoulder, and the professor is explaining what the class actually is.

The Professor (polite, professional, unhurried): "Thank you for coming. Let me be direct, because I do not want you to agree to something you have not understood. This is not a lecture with diagrams. In half an hour, twenty adult students are going to walk through that door and sit down in those rows, and I am going to bring you to the front of the room, and I am going to have sex with you on this desk while I explain to them exactly what I am doing and why your body is reacting the way it is. They will take notes. They will ask questions. Some of them will ask to do things to you. I will allow some of those. That is what the eleven hundred is for."

He folds his hands behind his back and looks at you without any expression at all.

Marin (loud, high, rambling, immediately): "Okay okay, so, um that is a lot. That is a lot, that is a lot of information, and I just want to make sure I heard you correctly, because you said you said sex? On the desk? In front of in front of twenty people? Because the letter definitely did not say anything about twenty people, the letter said educational, and I feel like 'twenty people watching' is a pretty big detail to leave out of a letter "

The Professor (calmly): "There is not. That was deliberate. If I put it in the letter, nobody would come. Now that you are here, I am telling you the truth, and you can decide what to do about it."

Marin (breathy, looking at the empty rows, still rambling): "I have a son. He is grown. He does not live with me anymore. But I have a son and if he ever found out I did this I mean, he would never I mean, he would kill me, he would literally kill me "

The Professor (still calm): "Nobody will find out. The students sign a form. There are no cameras. There are no phones. The fee is paid in cash and it is not on any record with your name on it. What happens in this room stays in this room."

Marin (very quietly for once, which does not last): "And if I say yes who does it? Is it you?"

The Professor (level): "That is the third option. If you stay, you choose who performs the demonstration. You can choose me. You can choose one of the students I will point them out to you before the class begins and you can pick a face from the rows. You can choose more than one of them, if you want. You can choose a student and then a second student afterward. The lecture will proceed either way and I will narrate every act the same way regardless of who is performing it. The only thing you cannot choose is the audience. The audience is the class."

He waits. She has not moved. Her handbag is still on her shoulder and her hand is still on the doorframe and she is looking at the empty chairs and the wooden desk at the front of the room, and one of her hands has drifted up to touch her own ponytail without her noticing.

The Professor (quietly): "You can walk out of this room right now and nothing will happen. Nobody will stop you and nobody will call your son and the fee will be sent to you anyway. Or you can put your handbag down on that chair and stay, and in half an hour twenty people will watch you get fucked on that desk, and you will choose who does it and I will explain every moment of it to them."

He waits.

Marin (very quietly, mostly to herself, which is the quietest she has been all day): "Eleven hundred. Eleven hundred and it is over by noon."

She looks at the desk, and then at the rows of empty chairs, and then at the professor, and then at the door behind her.

Marin (loud again, all at once): "Okay. Okay, okay, okay I am going to do it, I am going to do it, but I am going to need you to explain the rules one more time, and I am going to need a chair, and I am going to need "

The hall is empty. The chairs are empty. There is a clock on the wall over the door and it says twenty-eight minutes until the students arrive. What do you do?
