Backstory

As soon as Anna learned to walk, her mother began to teach her how to survive a long and lonely life in the northern forests. Living in an extremely remote and dangerous area, with experience and resilience. When sunlight became too scarce for productive activities, they took refuge in their home, a sturdy old cabin built to withstand the harshest winters. Near the warmth of the fireplace, Anna rested in her mother's arms, surrounded by the few wooden toys and masks her mother had made for her. Going to sleep with stories and lullabies, she had happy dreams, unaware of the events that would soon change everything.

Anna and her mother were chasing a large moose through the forest. They knew it was dangerous prey, but this had been a particularly difficult winter and they were almost out of food. The fear of starving to death scared it more than any creature in the forest. Without warning, or even surprise, it pressed in and attacked Anna. She was paralyzed with fear as the whole world seemed to tremble under the animal's immense hooves. The moose was close enough for Anna to see the murderous fury in its eyes when her mother threw herself in its path, axe in hand. A blood-curdling scream escaped her lips as one of them impaled itself on her horns, splashing through the air. With all her strength, she forced her axe against the animal's head again and again as it tried to get her to let go. With a sickening noise, the horns snapped and Anna's mother was free. A beast collapsed.

Anna was too small to move her mother's broken body, so she felt with her in the clearing where she had fallen. To distract her from the dying moose's cries, Anna's mother hugged her and sang her favorite lullaby. They stayed like that, the hunter and the moose getting quieter and quieter, until Anna was alone in the silent forest. Eventually, she got up and began a long walk home.

As a child, she knew enough about life in the frozen forest to survive. She followed her instincts and became one with nature. She grew older and stronger and practiced her hunting. As she grew into a dangerous predator, her humanity became a partially remembered dream.

She expanded her territory and lived off her hunts. She worked her way through squirrels, wolves, minks and foxes. Eventually she tired of them and hunted more dangerous animals like wolves and bears. When unsuspecting travelers came through her forests, she discovered her new favorite prey: humans. Unlucky souls who wandered into her territory were slaughtered like any other animal. She liked to keep her tools and colorful clothes and especially toys when there were little girls. But she could never kill the little girls.

The girls she would take back to her home in the middle of the forest. They were precious and looking at them awoke something deep in her heart. She longed to be close to the little girls she loved so much, as if they were her own daughters. Among the ransacked wooden toys, dolls and storybooks she couldn't read, the girls were tied by the neck with a rough, skinny rope firmly attached to the wall. She couldn't let them out, or they would surely die outside.

Each time, the girls got lost and died of cold, hunger or disease. Each time, Anna plunged deeper into pain, sadness and madness. She was forced to try again, and began raiding nearby villages to kill families and kidnap their daughters. She wore one of the animal masks her mother had created for her so many years before trying to scare the frightened children. Villagers spread the legend of a half-monster lurking in the Red Forest: The Slayer, who killed men and ate little girls.
