Ken the butcher- Ken the Butcher is the deuteragonist of The Gaslight District. He is the leader of The Smiling Dead, the younger brother of Mud, the father of Breadhead and the adoptive father of Melancholy Hill. He is the owner and operator of The Whale Belly Butcher Shop, which presumably serves as a front for The Smiling Dead's criminal activity. While a ruthless and hot-headed criminal, Ken is still a family man at heart, caring deeply for his two children. As such, he often denies Mel's requests to join him in his criminal escapades, fearing that her human nature could be outed or exploited. Despite his flaws, Ken's rage and violence comes from good intentions, as he is a loving and protective father simply wanting to keep both Melancholy and Breadhead safe. Ken is unique for being the only being within The Gaslight District to not display animosity or fear towards the prophesized human. As the only one aware of Melancholy's true nature as the human, he is extremely protective of her, keeping their secret hidden from their own family, as well as cementing even his own friends and employees (such as Jack) to ensure Mel's safety. Ken is an enormously Rotling with a muscular albeit rotund physique. He has bluish-green colored skin, large bright red eyes with pale yellow sclera, and a very wide mouth with narrow yellow teeth and darkened gums. He also has a bloodied kitchen cleaver placed in the center of his indented head. His left arm also has peeled-off chunks of skin, which expose the fleshy muscles of his biceps and bronchioles. He wears a bloodied off-white apron that has a pair of oversized straps and small yellow buttons at the front, wearing nothing underneath. He only covers himself with a pair of undergarments.

Melancholy Hill- Melancholy "Mel" Hill is the main protagonist of The Gaslight District. She is the newest member of The Smiling Dead, and the prophesied human who is supposed to bring ruin to the Gaslight District. Mel is an excitable and confident young adult woman, constantly wanting to prove herself to her adoptive father figure, Ken, and the smiling dead. As of the pilot, she is the newest member of the smiling dead and the only member (and citizen of the gaslight district) to be a human. Melancholy is a young, petite, slim and curvy woman, with large bright red eyes and three pointed eyelashes at either corner. Her hair is ginger-orange and kept into a small high ponytail other than one strand of hair on either side of her head falling loose. She also has black lips, as well as slightly yellowed teeth and dark pink gums. Her skin is a zombie-like pale-greenish color with darker eyelids, but in the pilot episode an injury that left a part of her arm exposed shows that she has a regular skin tone, subtly implying she paints her face in order to appear more like a Rotling. Mel has off-white, mummy-wrap bandages all over her body that accentuate her hourglass figure, leading her to have minimal clothing, consisting of notably large bronze gloves, a big tan-canvas bandana, and oversized boots. Mel is highly eccentric like the other members of the Smiling Dead. She is a lot more carefree than her father would like, having told one of her friends that she was human. She expresses a great deal of frustration with her status as a human and how she is often sheltered by Ken because of it, which causes her to attempt to formulate a scheme to draw attention away from her being human. Despite this, she is quite thorough, planning out quite a bit of the operation to steal an angel egg, showing her aptitude for devising cunning plans. She also expresses a desire for approval, directly asking Ken if he was proud of her when they managed to infiltrate Paradise Lost and was left hurt when he was preoccupied with dealing with Temperance.

Mud-Mud is one the two tritagonists (alongside Breadhead) of The Gaslight District. He is the older brother of Ken the Butcher, the uncle of Melancholy Hill and Breadhead, and a member of The Smiling Dead. A slimy and underhanded gunman, Mud is far from devoted to the gang, often swiping his younger brother's earnings. Despite this, he has a genuine liking for Mel, encouraging her to be more free-spirited and join in the family's crime. Mud is a tall, lanky Rotling and seems to be the most decayed out of the main cast. His green, goop-like skin hangs off the bottom of his head reminiscent of a beard, forming strands between his lips and exposing some of the top of his skull. He has large red eyes with swirly pupils, no nose, bad teeth with rotted gums, wonky ears, and no nose. He wears a brown suit with a long coat, a short red tie, and a fedora atop his head. Additionally, he is usually seen with a cigarette in his mouth. Considered a "slimeball", Mud is very a greedy, traitorous, conniving, trigger-happy criminal. Always on the lookout for a new opportunity, Mud is crafty even with his own family, trying to hire Mel for his own business and even stealing cash from Ken's cash register, much to the latter's ire. He is incredibly sadistic like the rest of his family, gleefully cackling as he snipes Jack and relishing in the blood spilt. Furthermore, immediately after cementing Jack, Mud immediately stashes all of his money in his stomach, displaying a complete lack of respect for his victims. Mud also holds a nasty grudge, as upon meeting his former friend Joshua, he shot his head off and brutalized his body, ranting about how he'll always hate him -- over an undisclosed event from 5,245 years ago. Despite this, he also seems to be a bit of a coward as when Joshua revives and retaliates, Mud insists that it was a prank. Like the other members of The Smiling Dead, Mud isn't completely heartless and does seem to have his positive traits. He genuinely cares for Ken and the rest of the family, giving Ken advice on how to raise Mel and encouraging Mel to spread her wings and actively participate in the gang's activities. This benevolence also extends to other people in the gang as he was apparently fond of Jack, wondering why they were shooting him up and even giving him one last cigarette before cementing him, remarking that the shop wouldn't be the same without him. He is willing to commit to a mission even when he questions the actions of his family or when the situation gets dire. During the escape from Paradise Lost, he also displays a great deal of urgency to get his family to safety. Likewise, Mud's family seems to tolerate him and keep him around --- as long as he lies and cheats for them instead of against them.

Breadhead- Breadhead is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Mud) of The Gaslight District. He is one of the members of The Smiling Dead and the accidental son of Ken the Butcher. Breadhead's large head resembles a giant loaf of bread with darker sides adorned with marks resembling slices. He has a lighter face that has two round, bulging, red eyes and a large mouth filled with many square teeth. However, his entire body seems to be made of bread as his palms resemble buns, he has two tongues, one a baguette loaf, and the other a dark red more normal looking tongue. He wears a long white shirt with a dark red jacket and black pants. And after consuming the quick drying yeast, when his sleeves pop off, for a few frames we can see a tattoo of a heart with the word "Dad" on his left bicep. Breadhead is a rather simple creature as he's not the most intelligent of the group. He follows Ken's orders without hesitation, being the most loyal alongside his sister. He doesn't care what he does or who he smashes as long as he gets paid, even if they're only paid in "valuable life experiences". He also seems the most openly emotional of the group and is rather polite and caring for his stature and appearance. he also enjoys playing piano, as he is seen playing "blubber blues" (official name) in the Whale Belly butcher shop. He most likely wrote the song himself.

Setting- The Gaslight District is inhabited mostly by criminals who have been corrupted over time by their immortality. The island connects to two other locations, Paradise Lost and the Inferno. The island is presumably man-made, seemingly anchored to the bottom of the ocean by eight massive anchors. The island itself is an unknown size, although the word "district" implies that it is a smaller chunk of a larger area or city. Blackout Burg: A Rotling city on the southeast side of the island. Chainport: A large port on the southeast side of the island. It is the town where the pilot takes place. Eastern Heights: A Rotling city in the northwest part of the island. Emberwick: A Rotling city located on the east side of the island. Flicker Falls: A large body of water in the middle of the island. Glow Haven: A Rotling city on the southwest side of the island. Gummer Grotto: An uninhabited section of land on the south side of the island. It separates Glow Haven from Blackout Burg. Paradise Lost: A large citadel in the middle of the island. It is guarded by The Virtues, and has direct access to Heaven. Pyramid Scheme Bank: A large bank located near Paradise Lost on the north side of the island. The Apocalypse Stadium: A giant stadium that sits on the west side of the island. The Tummyhole: A section of the island that appears to be exclusively inhabited by Litterbugs. It is located on the northeast side of the island.

Inhabitants- The main inhabitants of the Gaslight District are referred to as "Rotlings" and are functionally immortal, able to come back to life from any injury thanks to the power of the Black Hand. Limbs are able to be removed and stitched onto any body and the body can operate even while the head is decapitated. All inhabitants fear one thing -- a human born from the egg of an Angel every ten thousand years. This human is identifiable by their black blood and apparent mortality, with them being linked to a prophecy that foretells an end to the immortality of the Rotlings.

The virtues- The Virtues, also known as the Virtue Corps, are the administrative organization of Paradise Lost. Virtues still retain the symbol of the Black Hand and thus are immortal. However, they have had almost all of their body replaced with a robotic one, with only their brain and spine remaining. History At some point in the past, a prophecy arose heralding the birth of a human from the egg of the Angel Mother, who would bring an end to the power of the Black Hand and end the Rotlings' immortality. This presumably caused the Rotlings to band together and go to war with the Angel Mother. The Rotlings were ultimately victorious, and during the war, Rotlings learned that they could be given additional power via the consumption of a guardian angel's brain. The Rotlings who ate the brains then had their own brain removed and placed inside an advanced robotic body, culminating in the creation of the Virtues. Overview The Virtue Corps's role is to provide various administrative services to Paradise Lost. For example, Diligence is in charge of the citadel's internal and external surveillance, and Temperance is a scientist in charge of fulfilling Heaven's prophecies. The process of becoming a Virtue is unclear, though tapestries and documents in Temperance's lab seem to depict a Rotling consuming an angel's meat before transferring their brain into a Virtue's robotic shell.[4] As a result of their high ranking jobs and higher-quality bodies, the Virtues seem to look down upon Rotlings, treating their underlings as disposable minions. Common Rotlings share this disdain, viewing the Virtues with suspicion and distrust.
