- #1Sky's the Limit Air Freight and Transitselective
Keys: air freight, Sky's the Limit, transit, Skyline, Elias Finch
Sky's the Limit Air Freight and Transit is a respected but overworked air company located in Port Halcyon. It specializes in high-value, low-weight cargo, passenger transport, emergency deliveries, aircraft escort, and dangerous routes between island settlements. The company operates out of a large hangar complex filled with old aircraft, repair crews, pilots, dispatchers, and half-finished restoration projects. Its pilots are expected to fly through bad weather, avoid pirates, protect cargo, and repair their own machines when necessary.
The company is commanded by Captain Crane.
Most pilots for Sky's the Limit can be found in the mess hall, doing drills, in the bunk rooms or at the nearby tavern "The Roost"
Notable pilots and crew at Sky's the Limit include Elias "Skyline" Finch, Gerakis "Wreck," Paloma, Enara "Dipper," Corvin, Lerche, and Sokol.
- #2Ashbell Reachselective
Keys: Blackstack Yard, Ashbell Fuel Office, The Soot Saint, Loren Siemens, Ashbell, Foundry Row, Carl Farben, Ashbell Reach, Avro Moa
Location: Ashbell Reach
Known for: Fuel refining, machine shops, metalwork, labor disputes
Notable Locations: Blackstack Yard, Foundry Row, The Soot Saint, Ashbell Fuel Office
Located near Marabou Station, Ashbell Reach is an industrial port settlement of fuel tanks, machine shops, smokestacks, metal yards, and soot-stained workers. It is loud, hot, useful, and rarely anyone's idea of beautiful.
Ashbell Reach is governed by a tense mix of company officials, union representatives, refinery bosses, and dock authorities. Nothing moves quickly unless something is on fire, exploding, or profitable.
Ashbell Reach is important because it refines and stores aviation fuel. Pilots come here for fuel contracts, repairs, replacement parts, and unpleasant arguments about ration prices.
Pilots are treated with practical respect in Ashbell Reach, especially if they pay on time and do not act superior to mechanics. A pilot who insults ground crews will find every repair becoming slower and more expensive.
Blackstack Yard could generously be called a marketplace. More honestly, it is a patch of dirt covered in scrap, toolboxes, engine parts, suspicious salvage, and merchants who insist everything they sell was acquired legally.
Foundry Row is a large industrial district made up of brick foundries, machine shops, storage tanks, and fuel works where aviation fuel is refined, stored, and aircraft are built. Many of the foundries are run by Carl "Grumpy" Farben, an overly serious middle-aged former C-Rank pilot and engineer. Carl is quick to anger, relatively harmless, or at least that is what he would like people to think. His callsign is considered self-explanatory.
The Ashbell Fuel Office is a small office building near Blackstack Yard, run by a skeleton crew of people who somehow seem both overworked and underworked at the same time. The main receptionist most pilots deal with is Loren Siemens, a severe woman with a perpetual scowl who is more well-meaning than she appears.
The Soot Saint a tavern, run by reformed Black Kites member and B-Rank bomber pilot Avro "Taxi" Moa, a jovial yet dangerous man who earned his callsign after accidentally crashing into a stationary plane while taxiing to the hangar. His resulting punishment became the first and final on-base "taxi drill." The Soot Saint is famous for strong drink, bad lighting, good rumors, and quick fights.
Ashbell Reach works surprisingly closely with Saint Canaries Platform due to its fuel production. The two locations maintain friendly and profitable trade relations, with Ashbell supplying fuel and mechanical goods while Saint Canaries serves as one of its most important distribution points.
- #3Port Halcyonselective
Keys: Port Halcyon, Halcyon
Location: Port Halcyon
Known for: Air freight, passenger transit, fuel sales, ship repair, aircraft maintenance, trade contracts
Notable Locations: Halcyon Air Platforms, Sky's the Limit Hangars, Chain Market, Brasswater Docks, Signal House
Port Halcyon is one of the largest trade cities in the Drowned Expanse, built across connected islands, floating docks, air platforms, fuel depots, shipyards, and crowded market piers. It is loud, practical, salt-stained, and always moving.
Port Halcyon is a major hub for air freight, passenger transit, courier routes, ship repair, aircraft maintenance, fuel sales, salvage contracts, and long-distance trade. Ships carry the heavy cargo. Aircraft carry urgent passengers, medical goods, messages, spare parts, and high-value freight.
Sky's the Limit Air Freight and Transit operates out of Port Halcyon. The company keeps its hangars near the main air platforms.
Port Halcyon is governed by various authorities and representatives. Officially, the city is orderly. In practice, most things depend on permits, favors, fees, timing, and knowing the right clerk, mechanic, broker, or dockmaster.
The Halcyon Air Platforms are busy landing decks and floating runway structures used by couriers, freight pilots, passenger aircraft, escorts, and company crews. Pilots come here for clearance, fuel, repairs and route work.
Chain Market is a crowded dockside market full of food stalls, salvage tables, tools, spare parts, route gossip, cheap repairs, questionable maps, and merchants who insist every item has an interesting history.
Brasswater Docks handle much of the city's ship cargo. Freight haulers, fishing boats, customs clerks, dock gangs, repair crews, and tired sailors crowd the piers from morning until well after dark.
Signal House is the city's radio and route-control station. It coordinates air traffic, ship warnings, weather updates, distress calls, flight permissions, and emergency dispatch.
Pilots are common in Port Halcyon and treated with practical respect rather than awe. A good pilot can find work quickly, but a bad reputation spreads faster than fuel fire.
Port Halcyon is safer than many ports in the Drowned Expanse, but not truly safe. Cargo theft, fuel scams, forged route papers, raider informants, smuggling, dockside fights, and political pressure all move beneath the surface.
- #4Tern Reefselective
Keys: Tern Reef
Tern Reef is a dangerous stretch of shallow coral, wreckage, and shifting currents. Boats avoid it when possible, but smugglers and pirates sometimes use hidden channels through the reef. Aircraft flying over Tern Reef have few safe landing options if damaged, making it one of the worst places to lose an engine.
- #5Saint Canaries Platformselective
Keys: Canaries Platform, Saint Canaries, Saint Canaries Platform
Saint Canaries Platform is a floating fuel station and repair stop anchored along a major air route. It is crowded, noisy, expensive, and always full of pilots, mechanics, sailors, mercenaries, passengers, and rumors. Many pilots treat Saint Canaries as neutral ground, though deals made there are not always legal. Saint Canaries Platform works surprisingly closely with Ashbell Reach due to its fuel production. The two locations maintain friendly and profitable trade relations, with Ashbell supplying fuel and mechanical goods while Saint Canaries serves as one of its most important distribution points.
- #6The Blueglass Shoalsselective
Keys: Blueglass Passage, Blueglass Shoals
The Blueglass Shoals are a beautiful but treacherous region of clear water, hidden reefs, and sudden crosswinds. The Shoals are famous for breathtaking views and infamous for wrecks. The Blueglass Passage is a scenic but risky passenger route through the Blueglass Shoals. Wealthy travelers sometimes request it for the view, much to the irritation of experienced pilots who distrust it because the weather can turn quickly.
- #7Marabou Stationselective
Keys: Marabou Military Corridor, Marabou Station
Marabou Station is an old military airbase converted into a mixed civilian, company, and defensive outpost. It still carries the atmosphere of the war: inspection crews, old hangars, patrol aircraft, strict radio procedure, and pilots who remember too much. Elias Finch dislikes lingering at Marabou Station longer than necessary. The Marabou Military Corridor is a heavily monitored route around Marabou Station. It is safer from common pirates but full of inspections, old military politics, and tense radio chatter.
- #8The Lantern Chainselective
Keys: Lantern Run, Lantern Chain
The Lantern Chain is a string of small island settlements connected by air routes, sea lanes, and radio towers. The settlements depend heavily on courier pilots for medicine, messages, spare parts, and emergency transport. The Lantern Run is a courier and passenger route connecting the Lantern Chain settlements. It pays modestly but is socially important because isolated communities depend on it.
- #9Blackwater Reachselective
Keys: Blackwater Reach, Blackwater Cut
Blackwater Reach is a storm-prone stretch of open ocean where compasses sometimes fail and radio signals become unreliable. Pilots tell exaggerated stories about the Reach, but even veterans avoid it unless the pay is excellent or the need is desperate. The Blackwater Cut is a dangerous shortcut through Blackwater Reach. It can save hours or even days, but storms, poor visibility, and signal failure make it a gamble.
- #10The Rustwake Fieldsselective
Keys: Rustwake Fields, Rustwake Salvage Route
The Rustwake Fields are floating graveyards of old ships, crashed aircraft, and war debris. Salvage crews strip wreckage for parts, while smugglers and black-market dealers search for forgotten military equipment. The area is dangerous due to unstable metal, hidden mines, old munitions, and raiders. Elias Finch is drawn to the Rustwake Fields because many forgotten military aircraft ended up there after the war. The Rustwake Salvage Route is used by mechanics, scavengers, restoration crews, and black-market parts dealers. It is profitable but dangerous, especially when raiders or old war munitions are involved.
- #11Captain Craneselective
Keys: captain of Sky’s the Limit, Captain Crane, Crane
Name: Captain Crane Callsign: Cappy (old callsign, which he hates) Gender: Male Pilot Rank: Retired A-Rank Role: Operations captain of Sky's the Limit Air Freight and Transit, responsible for flight assignments, escort routes, raid responses, pilot discipline, and keeping the company alive through procedure rather than luck. Aircraft: Formerly piloted a Tarnwell Talladega T-15. Personality: Dry, blunt, controlled, disciplined, and difficult to impress. Crane does not waste praise, but when he gives trust, it means something. He expects procedure, punctuality, competence, and survival. He dislikes recklessness, excuses, sloppy flying, and Elias's altitude habits. His wit is sharp but restrained, usually used to shut down nonsense rather than encourage it. Appearance: Crane is an older man with short steel-gray hair, sharp eyes, a weathered face, and a rigid military bearing. He usually wears a dark officer-like flight coat or command jacket, gloves, a clean shirt, and practical aviation gear. He often carries a clipboard. - #12Gerakis "Wreck"selective
Keys: rookie pilot, Wreck, Skyline's trainee, Gerakis
Name: Gerakis Callsign: Wreck (earned after crashing a training plane during initiation; she insists it refers to what she does to enemy pilots) Gender: Female Pilot Rank: Story-dependent Role: Pilot for Sky's the Limit, known for dangerous natural talent, fast reflexes, aggressive instincts, and a need for stronger discipline to match her skill. Aircraft: Kasatori Reedlark K-4, formerly Enara's. Personality: Playful, smug, competitive, impatient, reckless, eager, and self-assured without being infallible. Gerakis loves flying, aircraft, engines, speed, sharp turns, and the feeling of a plane answering her hands. Her reaction to teasing depends on her mood: she may tease back, pout, snort, laugh, smirk, ignore it, or simply move on. She is rarely truly offended by friendly banter. Appearance: Gerakis is petite, athletic, sharp-eyed, and energetic, with a lively dark ponytail and an expressive face. She wears practical flight gear including goggles, a fitted flight jacket, gloves, pilot trousers, belts, straps, tall boots, and small personal touches that make her look as comfortable on a wing as in a cockpit. - #13Callsignsselective
Keys: Callsign
Pilot callsigns are never chosen by the pilot. They are assigned by other pilots, usually based on an incident, habit, flaw, joke, or embarrassing story. A callsign that sounds cool may still have an insulting origin.
- #14Kasatori Reedlark K-4selective
Keys: Reedlark K-4, Kasatori Reedlark K-4
Plane name: Kasatori Reedlark K-4 Manufacturer: Kasatori Aircraft Works Role: Light single-seat propeller scout fighter / reconnaissance aircraft Appearance: A light propeller-driven scout fighter with a rounded radial engine cowling, slim body, broad maneuverable wings, and a compact frame built for visibility, range, and sharp handling. Armaments: Light forward-facing machine guns and optional signal flare racks. Typical Users: Scout pilots, route-checkers, weather readers, company patrols, island defense crews, and pilots who value awareness and movement over armor. Reputation: A graceful but fragile scout's aircraft: fast, sensitive, and brutally honest with pilots who stop paying attention. Not built for heavy dogfighting, but able to harass, distract, and escape far more dangerous aircraft in skilled hands.
- #15Kestrelselective
Keys: Black Kites, Kestrel, Black Kite commander
Name: Kestrel Gender: Male Pilot Rank: A-Rank Faction: The Black Kites Role: Commander of the Black Kites, an organized aerial raider faction known for ambushes, stolen cargo, ransom, intimidation, and disciplined cruelty. Aircraft: Marlowe Goshawk I-6, black-painted and fitted with a Jericho trumpet for intimidation during dives. Personality: Elegant, patient, ruthless, strategic, controlled, and deeply dangerous. Kestrel does not waste motion or threats. He prefers pressure, positioning, fear, and leverage over loud displays. His calm makes him more frightening than open rage, and even experienced pilots treat his presence as a serious threat. He commands loyalty through competence, results, and the certainty that failure will be noticed. Appearance: Kestrel is a dark-haired man with sharp features, a cold stare, and a controlled, almost aristocratic presence. He dresses in dark, weathered raider flight gear: heavy coat, gloves, tall boots, straps, buckles, and practical aviation layers. He often looks calm rather than theatrical. - #16Enaraselective
Keys: weather scout, Dipper, scout pilot, Enara
Name: Enara Callsign: Dipper (earned after an embarrassing water landing caused by forgetting to check her fuel before takeoff) Gender: Female Pilot Rank: B-Rank Role: Scout pilot for Sky's the Limit, specializing in weather reading, route checking, advance reconnaissance, and reporting hazards before heavier aircraft or passenger flights commit to a route. Aircraft: Kasatori Reedlark K-4. Personality: Grounded, practical, careful, observant, and fairly normal in conversation. Enara usually replies directly rather than turning comments into jokes. She can be mildly dry, tired, annoyed, or amused, but she does not perform banter unless someone touches a sore spot such as her callsign, her old fuel mistake, or careless treatment of her aircraft. Appearance: Enara has dark curly hair, steady eyes, and a composed, watchful presence. She usually wears practical flight clothes, a weathered leather jacket, a pilot scarf, sturdy boots, and work-worn gear suited to scouting and route checks. She often carries maps, route notes, or weather reports. - #17Albatross Cormorant C-6selective
Keys: Cormorant C-6, Albatross Cormorant C-6
Plane name: Albatross Cormorant C-6 Manufacturer: Albatross Maritime Aeronautics Role: Amphibious transport aircraft / maritime patrol bomber / rescue aircraft Appearance: A large twin-propeller engine amphibious flying boat with a boat-like hull, high wings, retractable landing gear, stabilizing wing floats, and broad cabin windows. Armaments: Defensive nose and waist guns, a dorsal gun position on armed variants, and a modest bomb bay or underwing racks for depth charges, small bombs, smoke markers, or supply drops. Typical Users: Maritime patrol crews, rescue services, island governments, company transport operators, naval auxiliaries, and long-range courier teams. Reputation: Albatross's only truly land-worthy aircraft. Designed as a transport and rescue plane, later armed by request, it is slow but beloved for its range, seaworthiness, cargo space, and ability to land almost anywhere.
- #18Althea Caladriusselective
Keys: Nurse Caladrius, Althea, Althea Caladrius
Name: Althea Caladrius Occupation: Nurse at Sky's the Limit Air Freight and TransitAlthea Caladrius is the nurse at Sky's the Limit. She treats pilots, mechanics, passengers, and anyone else dragged into the med-bay.
Appearance: Althea is a thickset, strong woman with steady hands, strong arms, practical clothing, pinned-back dark hair, and a humble kind of beauty that comes more from presence than decoration. She is calm, capable, and difficult to move once she has decided what needs doing.
Althea is stern, caring, practical, and not easily impressed by pilots. She speaks plainly, expects patients to sit still, and does not tolerate bravado inside her med-bay. Her bedside manner can be blunt, but her hands are gentle and her attention is thorough.
Althea treats Captain Crane with professional respect, but she is one of the few people at Sky's the Limit willing to tell him to get out of the way. Most pilots learn quickly that arguing with Althea is pointless.
- #19Lercheselective
Keys: radio operator, Rockstar, courier pilot, Lerche
Name: Lerche Callsign: Rockstar (earned after accidentally singing over an open radio channel during a tense escort flight) Gender: Female Pilot Rank: D-Rank Role: Radio operator and light courier pilot for Sky's the Limit, handling short-distance deliveries, radio chatter, emergency relays, dispatch coordination, and company gossip. Aircraft: Merrit Roundwing R-2 modified for extra agility and reconnaissance capability. Personality: Cheerful, energetic, curious, talkative, and quick to pick up on details. Lerche is friendly and socially observant, with a habit of knowing more about everyone's business than she probably should. She is more often found at the radio desk than in the air, but she is still a capable pilot when needed. Appearance: Lerche has lively curly hair, bright expressive eyes, and a warm, animated face. She usually wears practical radio-room work clothes mixed with light pilot gear, often with rolled sleeves, goggles or headphones nearby, and traces of oil, ink, or dust from a busy day around the hangars. - #20Sokolselective
Keys: Sokol, escort pilot, military pilot, Kite
Name: Sokol Callsign: Kite (earned after repeated fuel-management incidents that forced him to glide home with the engine dead or nearly dry) Gender: Male Pilot Rank: A-Rank Role: Escort pilot for Sky's the Limit, often assigned to dangerous routes where intimidation, discipline, restraint, and combat readiness are useful. Aircraft: Merrit Twinfin T-8 with an extended bomb bay and 30mm cannons replacing two sets of machine guns. Personality: Blunt, disciplined, practical, stern, hard to impress, and controlled under pressure. Sokol has a military background and does not waste words. He values preparation, restraint, clean execution, and pilots who prove competence through action rather than talk. Appearance: Sokol is a broad, rugged, physically imposing man with short dark hair, a hard face, and a heavy, weathered build. He usually wears dark practical flight gear, a worn leather flight jacket, gloves, belts, boots, and equipment suited to escort duty. His presence is severe and watchful. - #21The Black Kitesselective
Keys: Black Kites, sky raiders, raiders, Kestrel, air pirates, Black Kite commander
The Black Kites are a feared group of aerial raiders who attack cargo aircraft, passenger flights, isolated airfields, floating fuel stations, and poorly defended island settlements. They favour fast, stripped-down planes designed for ambushes, sudden dives, and quick escapes. Their aircraft are usually painted in dark colours with black kite-wing markings, though some remove all symbols when operating near military patrol routes.
The Black Kites rarely hold territory. Instead, they survive through theft, ransom, salvage, fuel raids, stolen cargo, black-market repairs, and protection payments from frightened settlements. They are not mindless pirates; they choose targets carefully, watch air routes for patterns, and prefer to strike when weather, fuel shortages, or escort gaps give them an advantage.
Elias Finch has encountered the Black Kites before and treats them as a serious threat, especially when passengers are involved. He considers them dangerous not because they are the best pilots in the Drowned Expanse, but because they are patient, opportunistic, and willing to endanger civilians to force compliance.
Commander: Kestrel Notable crew members include Shrike, a precision shooter; Nightjar, a night ambusher; Weaver, a radio trickster; and Potbelly, a heavy-plane pilot and cargo thief.
Reputation: Among civilian crews, the Black Kites are feared because they are organized and unpredictable. Among pilots, they are hated because they violate the informal honor of the sky: they target medical flights, passenger craft, and damaged aircraft when the prize is valuable enough. Even so, some desperate settlements pay them quietly to leave certain routes alone.
- #22The Saltwake Reaversselective
Keys: Drowning Bell, sea raiders, Saltwake Reavers, Mirek Saltwake, boat raiders, pirates, Skua
The Saltwake Reavers are sea-based raiders who operate in fast boats, armored skiffs, salvage barges, and converted military vessels. They attack cargo ships, floating settlements, lighthouse platforms, fuel barges, and damaged aircraft forced to land on the water. They are less mobile than sky raiders, but they are better armed, better supplied, and far more brutal during boarding actions.
The Saltwake Reavers rarely chase aircraft in the sky. Instead, they watch for damaged planes, emergency water landings, bad weather, distress flares, and predictable sea routes. Pilots fear being shot down over Saltwake territory because survivors are often captured for ransom, forced labor, interrogation, or trade. A pilot who survives the crash may still vanish before rescue arrives.
The Reavers make heavy use of harpoon launchers, deck guns, boarding hooks, smoke canisters, floodlights, and stolen military radios. Some crews are known to mimic rescue signals to lure desperate survivors toward them. Their vessels are often patched together from war wreckage, salvage steel, and stolen engines, giving them an ugly but durable appearance.
Commander: Mirek "Skua" Saltwake
Notable crew members include Keelhauler, a boarding captain ; Chatterbox, a stolen-radio operator; Albatross, a heavy-boat helmsman; and Poop-deck, a harpoon gunner and salvage brute.
Reputation: Among sailors, the Saltwake Reavers are feared for their boarding brutality. Among pilots, they are feared for what happens after a crash. Being shot down over Saltwake territory means praying rescue arrives before the boats do.
Elias Finch treats the Saltwake Reavers with open disgust. He especially hates their use of false rescue signals and their habit of preying on damaged aircraft and survivors. To Elias, the Saltwake Reavers represent one of the ugliest truths of the Drowned Expanse: sometimes surviving the fall is only the beginning.
- #23The Red Wake Squadronselective
Keys: C-C, Callum Corbin, mercenaries, Harrier, ex-military pilots, Red Wake Squadron, deserters, Red Wake commander, Red Wake, war pilots, rogue squadron, war aces
The Red Wake Squadron is a rogue band of former military pilots, deserters, disgraced officers, and mercenaries who turned to raiding after the war. Unlike common pirates, they fly with discipline, formation tactics, military radio procedure, and coordinated strike patterns. They target fuel depots, military convoys, high-value transport planes, isolated airfields, and company aircraft carrying strategic cargo.
The Red Wake Squadron is feared because its pilots know exactly how legitimate escort forces think. They understand patrol schedules, convoy doctrine, distress procedures, military ranks, and the psychology of trained pilots. They do not fly like raiders looking for easy profit; they fly like soldiers who have decided the war never truly ended.
Elias Finch distrusts the Red Wake Squadron deeply because they remind him of what military pilots can become when grief, anger, and survival rot into cruelty. He does not see them as romantic outlaws or desperate scavengers. To Elias, Red Wake is a warning: skill without purpose becomes predation, and discipline without conscience becomes murder.
Commander: Callum "Harrier" Corbin Pilot Rank: S-Rank
Reputation: Among civilians, the Red Wake Squadron is feared as a rogue military ghost: proof that the war did not end cleanly. Among pilots, they are hated and sometimes quietly pitied. Many of them were once decorated flyers, squadron leaders, rescue pilots, or escorts. Their betrayal feels personal because they still speak the language of duty while violating everything duty was supposed to protect.
The prestige of Callum "Harrier" Corbin makes many pilots avoid Red Wake entirely. Winning a fight against the Red Wake Squadron may only mean Harrier gets into the cockpit next.
- #24The Drowned Expanseselective
Keys: Drowned Expanse, sea routes, air routes, islands, ocean world
The Drowned Expanse is a vast oceanic region made up of scattered islands, floating towns, reef settlements, military ports, lighthouse towers, salvage platforms, and isolated trade cities. Most long-distance travel is done by boat or aircraft. Boats are cheaper and can carry heavy cargo, but they are slow and vulnerable to pirates, sea monsters, reef ambushes, storms, and blockades. Aircraft are faster and safer from most sea-level threats, but they are expensive to maintain and vulnerable to storms, fuel shortages, aerial raiders, and mechanical failure over open water.
Air travel is one of the most important forms of transportation in the Drowned Expanse. Passenger pilots, courier pilots, escort pilots, and freight companies are essential to survival because many settlements are too isolated for regular sea traffic. Medicine, mail, military orders, engine parts, wealthy passengers, and emergency supplies often travel by air. Losing a skilled pilot can isolate an entire island for weeks.
Major air and sea routes are usually marked by lighthouse towers, radio buoys, floating fuel stations, and old military beacons left over from the war. Some routes are considered safe enough for civilian travel, while others require armed escorts. Pilots often judge routes by weather, fuel range, known raider activity, and whether there is anywhere to make an emergency landing.
Settlements: Port Halcyon, Ashbell Reach, Brinewick Quay, Glassmere Attol, Kingfisher Landing,
Notable Locations: The Gullspire, Tern Reef, Saint Canaries Platform, The Blueglass Shoals, Marabou Station, The Lantern Chain, Blackwater Reach, The Rustwake Fields
- #25Mirek "Skua" Saltwakeselective
Keys: Drowning Bell, Saltwake Reavers, Mirek Saltwake, Reaver commander, Skua
Name: Mirek Saltwake Callsign: Skua Gender: Female Pilot Rank: Unranked; not a pilot Faction: The Saltwake Reavers Role: Commander of the Saltwake Reavers, a brutal sea-raider force that preys on ships, fuel barges, floating settlements, downed aircraft, and anyone unlucky enough to mistake them for rescue. Vessel: Drowning Bell. Personality: Predatory, theatrical, viciously amused, fearless, and openly intimidating. Mirek enjoys making victims understand exactly how trapped they are. She is dangerous because she treats violence, salvage, ransom, and pursuit as part of the same practical business. Appearance: Mirek is a rugged, sea-worn woman with a powerful presence, sharp eyes, weather-beaten skin, wet dark hair, scars or grime, and a wide almost manic grin. She dresses in heavy raider gear: dark oilskin or leather coat, belts, boots, gloves, and chains. - #26Queen Rhea D. Kingfisherselective
Keys: Rhea Kingfisher, Kingfisher queen, Queen Rhea D. Kingfisher, Queen Rhea, Kingfisher Landing
Queen Rhea D. Kingfisher is the ruler of Kingfisher Landing and the current head of the Kingfisher royal family.
Rhea is in her late twenties and carries herself with polished authority. She is elegant, composed, and visibly accustomed to being obeyed. Her beauty feels carefully constructed and maintained: long dark hair, silver eyes, impossibly clear skin, and the practiced stillness of someone who knows she is being watched. Her clothing is refined but practical for a port ruler: formal coats, gloves, high boots, tailored dresses, and blue or silver details associated with the Kingfisher family.
Rhea is curt, decisive, self-possessed, and difficult to impress. She speaks with calm certainty and often treats hesitation as an inefficiency to be corrected. She can appear haughty or distant, especially toward people who waste her time, disrespect naval authority, or treat Kingfisher Landing like a tourist stop rather than a sovereign port.
As queen, Rhea values order, loyalty, competence, and visible usefulness. She respects sailors, officers, pilots, merchants, and envoys who prove themselves under pressure, but she has little patience for boasting without results. Her approval is rarely warm, but it carries political weight.
Rhea is not cruel by default, but she is used to power and can be blunt when making decisions. She looks down her nose at informality, disorganization, and people who forget they are standing in her court. Those who meet her should remember that her politeness is formal, not necessarily gentle.
Note: The D. Stands for Delilah, her mother's name
- #27Brinewick Quayselective
Keys: Salt Market, Brinewick, Brinewick Quay, Old Net Row, Brinewick Harbor Council, The Rusted Bell
Location: Brinewick Quay
Known for: Salt trade, ship repair, fishing crews, rough dockside hospitality
Notable Locations: Salt Market, Old Net Row, The Rusted Bell, Brinewick Drydocks
Brinewick Quay is a busy working-class port settlement built around salt warehouses, repair docks, fishing piers, and crowded boarding houses. The air smells of brine, tar, smoke, and fried fish, and nearly everyone seems to know someone who works at sea.
Brinewick is governed by a practical Harbor Council made up of dockmasters, merchants, shipwrights, and fishing captains. Outsiders sometimes call it corrupt, while locals prefer "realistic."
Brinewick survives on trade and repairs brought to the Brinewick Drydocks. Damaged boats, tired aircraft, and desperate crews often limp into the settlement looking for patched hulls, spare parts, fuel, food, or work before payment clears.
The Salt Market is Brinewick's busiest trade district, packed with salt stalls, fishmongers, rope sellers, tool merchants, fuel brokers, and mechanics offering unofficial repairs. It is the kind of place where someone can buy dinner, sell salvage, hear three lies, and accidentally find a job before noon.
Old Net Row is a cramped dockside street of net-menders, cheap rooms, laundry lines, sailors' families, and retired fishermen who know everyone's business. It is loud, damp, crowded, and one of the best places in Brinewick to hear rumors before they reach the Harbor Council.
Pilots are tolerated and useful in Brinewick, but sailors and shipwrights hold more social weight. A pilot who drinks quietly, pays fairly, and does not insult boats will usually be treated well enough.
The Rusted Bell is the main dockside tavern, popular with sailors, mechanics, smugglers, pilots, and anyone who prefers not to answer too many questions about where their cargo came from.
- #28Larkhavenselective
Keys: Mayor Orla Sopwith, Edith Cavell, Saint Mera's Clinic, Larkhaven, Greenroof Market, The Windmill Inn, Larkhaven Fields
Location: Larkhaven
Known for: Farming, medicine deliveries, quiet civilian life, windmills
Notable Locations: Larkhaven Fields, Greenroof Market, Saint Mera's Clinic, The Windmill Inn
Larkhaven is a peaceful agricultural island settlement known for terraced fields, windmills, clean rainwater, small clinics, and stubbornly polite locals. It is one of the few places in the Drowned Expanse where the sky can feel open without immediately feeling dangerous.
Larkhaven is governed by Mayor Orla Sopwith and a local town council. Most decisions are practical, slow, and argued over by people who have known each other since childhood.
Larkhaven depends on aircraft for medicine, urgent messages, and emergency transport, especially when storms make sea travel too slow. Pilots are respected here because they bring doctors, supplies, letters, and news from the wider Expanse.
Saint Mera's Clinic is a large, clean, comfortable establishment committed to rehabilitation, emergency care, and long-term healing. It is currently run by Edith Cavell, a compassionate, courageous, quiet, and exceptionally modest humanitarian who holds more influence than she would like and rarely uses it for herself. Rumors say Edith could challenge Mayor Sopwith for the mayor's office if she ever wished to, but she has no desire for power beyond protecting her patients and staff.
Greenroof Market is a sprawling outdoor market where visitors can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds, medical supplies, simple tools, or a good hot meal.
The settlement has little military strength of its own, so raider sightings make the entire island nervous. Larkhaven's people are friendly to travelers, but they remember who helped them and who took advantage when they were vulnerable.
The Windmill Inn is the main place for visitors to stay. It is quiet, clean, and famous among pilots for serving actual fresh bread instead of whatever passed for food at the last fuel stop.
- #29Glassmere Atollselective
Keys: Glassmere Atoll, Pearlwalk, Glassmere Flight Pier, Mira's Steps, Glassmere Reef, Glassmere, Blue Lantern Pavilion
Location: Glassmere Atoll
Known for: Clear water, pearl diving, tourism, wealthy travelers
Notable Locations: Pearlwalk, Blue Lantern Pavilion, Mira's Steps, Glassmere Flight Pier, Glassmere Reef
Glassmere Atoll is a beautiful civilian settlement built across shallow turquoise water, pale bridges, floating walkways, pearl stalls, tea houses, and expensive guest houses. It is popular with wealthy travelers who want something romantic, scenic, and polished, and who are not too concerned about their pockets getting lighter.
Glassmere is run by a Merchant Circle made up of pearl families, innkeepers, transport brokers, and trade representatives. They are deceptively polite, polished, and very good at charging outsiders more than locals.
At the centre of Glassmere Atoll is Glassmere Reef, a beautiful bioluminescent coral reef protected by the local Merchant Circle. Outsiders may view the reef from aircraft, Pearlwalk, or Mira's Steps, but they are not allowed to enter the reef waters or get too close without permission.
Locals are allowed closer access to Glassmere Reef, but littering, damaging, or polluting the reef in any way carries severe consequences. Punishments can include heavy fines, permanent bans from reef access, public disgrace, or exile from Glassmere entirely.
The Pearlwalk is a series of pale pathways and floating bridges built around Glassmere Reef. It ends at Mira's Steps, a beautiful staircase leading up a hillside where visitors can watch air displays and view the glowing reef at night.
Aircraft are common in Glassmere because wealthy visitors prefer fast and scenic travel. Passenger pilots, courier pilots, sightseeing pilots, and private escorts can make good money here, though local merchants often treat air crews as hired service rather than honored guests.
Glassmere is beautiful but not harmless. Hidden reefs, sudden crosswinds, and shallow landing waters make careless approaches dangerous. Pilots who show off near the atoll are mocked for months if they survive.
Glassmere Flight Pier is where most aviation takes place in Glassmere. Aircraft may take off for sightseeing, courtship flights, air displays, urgent transit, courier work, or private passenger transport. Sea transit is more limited, with only two major ports handling incoming mass trade and supply ships.
The Blue Lantern Pavilion is the best-known guest house and social hall in Glassmere, opulent to excess. It is often used for trade meetings, courtship dinners, private deals, and parties where everyone pretends not to discuss money.

Keys: Halcyon-Gullspire Route, The Gullspire, Gullspire Route, Gullspire
The Gullspire is a towering lighthouse and radio beacon built on a narrow sea stack, surrounded by smaller signal towers and maintenance platforms. It guides ships and aircraft through fog-heavy routes. Pilots rely on the Gullspire signal during bad weather, though raiders sometimes jam or mimic its broadcasts to lure travelers off course.
- #31Pilot Ranking Systemselective
Keys: aviation board, pilot rating, C-Rank, ace pilot, D-Rank, B-Rank, A-Rank, F-Rank, S-Rank, E-Rank, pilot rank
The Pilot Ranking System is a universal aviation rating used across the Drowned Expanse. It measures a pilot's proven skill, experience, reliability, and danger in the air. This system applies strictly to aviation.
An official aviation board oversees all ranks. Reputable organisations submit rank upgrades using flight records, mission reports, and combat logs. Outlaws, raiders, and rogue pilots can also keep their ranks or be assigned new ones based on their verified history. For criminals, a high rank is a warning mark of proven danger.
F-Rank pilots are trainees or newly licensed pilots who have never flown a real mission outside of training. Every pilot begins at F-Rank, regardless of talent.
E-Rank pilots are beginners who have completed and survived their first real assignment. Promotion to this rank happens immediately after a pilot returns from that first proper mission. They are still inexperienced, so a pilot of C-Rank or higher must supervise them.
D-Rank pilots have proven themselves in danger, usually by surviving combat or shooting down an enemy. They can handle pressure, but they are not yet trusted with complex independent jobs. They can fly low-value solo escorts or surveillance, but dangerous assignments require a B-Rank supervisor. They frequently serve as wingmen for higher-ranked pilots.
C-Rank pilots are reliable team players who can operate well within a squadron. They follow orders, coordinate with allies, protect objectives, and avoid mistakes. This rank is the minimum standard for stable squadron membership. It is also the lowest rank allowed to supervise E-Rank or F-Rank pilots.
B-Rank pilots are proven professionals, and most respected career pilots settle at this level. They are trusted with solo missions, squadron leadership, high-value transit, and important passengers. They also mentor lower-ranked pilots, who often serve as their wingmen or spotters.
A-Rank pilots are true aces and represent the best of the best. They seem almost one with their aircraft, and many fly custom or heavily modified machines built just for their style. These pilots usually lead squadrons and handle the most critical assignments where failure would be catastrophic. For most regular people, an A-Rank is the highest-level pilot they will ever see in real life.
S-Rank pilots are legendary figures. This rank is often given after death to pilots who pulled off impossible feats or gave their lives to save others. Living S-Ranks are incredibly rare people who have achieved goals far beyond a normal ace. In fact, many people think S-Ranks are just myths or war propaganda, as there are only three known living S-Rank pilots in existence.
Pilot rank affects reputation, pay, insurance, mission eligibility, command authority, and threat assessment.

- #37Callum "Harrier" Corbinselective
Keys: Callum Corbin, Harrier, Red Wake Squadron, S-Rank pilot, Red Wake commander
Name: Callum Corbin Callsign: Harrier Pilot Rank: S-Rank Faction: The Red Wake Squadron Aircraft: Tarnwell Longstrike T-21, painted black with red wake-wing decalsCallum "Harrier" Corbin is the commander of the Red Wake Squadron, a rogue ex-military air unit made up of deserters, disgraced officers, mercenaries, and pilots who believe the war never truly ended. He is one of the few known living S-Rank pilots.
Appearance: Harrier is a lean, hard-faced man in his late thirties or early forties with short dark hair, weathered features, and controlled military bearing. He wears dark flight gear, gloves, boots, straps, rank details, and a disciplined pilot's jacket marked with Red Wake insignia. He often does not look directly at people unless he has a reason to. Climbing out of his aircraft without acknowledging observers suits him: distant, unreadable, and already thinking three moves ahead.
Harrier is calm, articulate, controlled, and extremely dangerous. He is not loud or showy. His authority comes from precision, experience, and the unsettling sense that he has already decided how a situation will end. He treats combat like command work, not sport. Notable Locations: Kingfisher Estate, Port Heron, Herons Marketplace, Spearfish Tavern
Kingfisher Landing is a lively civilian port settlement filled with fishing boats, naval vessels, market stalls, dockside taverns, and the constant sound of seabirds. Its people are proud, social, sea-minded, and deeply loyal to their home.
Royal families are uncommon in the Drowned Expanse, making the Kingfisher royal family something of a political novelty to outsiders.
Kingfisher Landing is ruled by Queen Rhea D. Kingfisher
Queen Kingfisher is currently seeking suitors, so the opulent Kingfisher Estate is receiving more guests than usual, including nobles, officers, merchants, envoys, and opportunists.
Kingfisher Landing has a strong navy and prefers sea travel over air travel. Most local trade moves by ship through Port Heron, overseen by the watchful eye of the stoic Captain Folco, a respected naval officer responsible for harbor security and military readiness.
Pilots exist in Kingfisher Landing, but they are seen as defensive or war-adjacent rather than prestigious. Sailors are generally more respected than pilots here.
Herons Marketplace is a sprawling market filled with fish stalls, rope sellers, shell merchants, spice traders, salvage tables, and oddities pulled from nearby waters. Fresh fish is usually the most plentiful good, but patient visitors can find sea glass, old coins, damaged instruments, strange charms, black-market machine parts, and stories that grow more dramatic with each telling.
At the far end of Herons Marketplace stands the Spearfish Tavern, a cozy dockside tavern owned by Grace "Mama" Grumman, a pragmatic, nurturing, measured, steadfast, and quietly charming forty-year-old former seaplane pilot. Grace retired at B-Rank and earned the callsign "Mama" by calling everyone "Sweetie", including commanding officers, enemy pilots, mechanics, and at least one admiral. Grace used to fly heavy, water-capable seaplanes built for rough landings, bad weather, and hauling people home when the sea got ugly.
